The techno scene over here (in Detroit at least) is more uptight and artsy than the UK, probably because it is underground and therefore self consciously cool :-). public enemy changed my life

Postby nashvillebrook » Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:08 pm

we lived in an old victorian house in east tennessee at the twilight of a spontaneous music scene explosion. we fashioned the attic as a big painting studio, rumpus room. at the time my boyfriend was a bitter traveling musician. fed up with the music biz and tired of music, period.

we'd have people up in the attic every weekend and at one point got stuck on Fear of a Black Planet and couldn't stop playing it. BF gets home one nite...prolly about 2 am... and the house is rocking, full of people. i braced for his temper. he went to turn the music off and kick everyone out and stopped...he sat and actually listened to the record for the first time. i won't say this cured his bitterness, but it did open his eyes to what his music was missing. immediacy, reality, grit.

that band broke up and he began a period of loosening up. long overdue. i really feel like if he didn't have a minor nervous breakdown that nite, we might not still be together.

capitalism in hip hop

Postby nashvillebrook » Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:16 pm

it's particularly nasty, i agree. and i have to admit, i've wondered the same thing. it seems toooooo easy that the messaging is so often *bling* when in the beginning the message was more human-centered.

maybe before we totally throw the idea out... has anyone read any good biodgraphy of the hip hop genre? there's lots of conspiracy theory about who really killed Tupac, etc. the scuttlebutt is that it was a corruption of the biz within hip hop -- but having experience in the environmental movement, it's not a stretch to imagine 'blue meanies' taking advantage of an already loose business model to produce cultural product to fit 'their' needs rather than cultural tastes.

my activism reference is about Judi Bari, btw.

"it's not a stretch to imagine 'blue meanies' taking advantage of an already loose business model to produce cultural product to fit 'their' needs rather than cultural tastes."

Yep thats a good point, considering how many of the original rap messages were so empowering.. I wouldnt be surprised that rap was deliberately molded into something less threatening to the status quo, after big money got involved.

"Didn't techno start in Detroit with black djs like Juan Atkins scratching mad European electronic stuff l such as kraftwerk ?"

Yep it did, along with Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May. Every year in May we now have a free techno festival which commemorates Detroit's techno roots.

Funny enough on the plane back from a visit to the UK in May, Theo Parrish sat next to me, he slept during takeoff and all the way back to Detroit. He just finished a tour of the UK and had just driven overnight to Heathrow from a night in Newcastle. Thats where US DJs make their money is touring abroad, as Im sure you are aware.
Not sure you have heard of him (metropolis.japantoday.com.../clubs.asp ), but I guess he is considered part of Detroit's 'Third Wave', you can check out some of his music here:
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/collective/A3071422
edit: here it is..
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/collective/A3070603

Another Detroit artist I really like is DJ Bone:
www.discogs.com/artist/DJ+Bone

Edited by: Bilbo Hicks at: 1/13/06 6:59 pm

Instrumental Guitar Rock

Postby Rambuncle » Fri Jan 13, 2006 10:13 pm

Anyone interested in the above should check out Buckethead(the same Buckethead that was in the "new" Guns N Roses). He is incredible. Better than any album would be seeing him live. An entertaining show with the music.
We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things - Terry Pratchett, Jingo

cointelpop! <- I've got to start a label called that!

cointelpop! <- I've got to start a label called that! (copyright me 2006)

scollon, there's a case to be made that 60's 70's britsh rock/pop was fired up by the cold-war propaganda/programming agencies. but I don't really want to go there right now. positive/revolutionary rap/hiphop gets dumped in favor of crap as much as in other forms I think (exept in modern corporate 'protest' punk (green day made almost 90million dollars on tour in 2005) in which the politics get turned into a fashion stance).

I listen to some new british bands these days, that and a ton of old stuff (I've just discovered Astor Piazzolla for instance) is taking up most of my time from scouting much of the newest stuff. Most of the folks I know are listening to local bands and really small bands touring around, so not stuff that would be very available. Although you might have a good chance of finding the Epoxies 1 2, probably the bigest of the local groups atm.

Here's a newish mixer I like -- http://norelpref.com/He get's a lot of air time on recent Hours of Slack. Plenty of good stuff to download too, look for the hour plus long compliation mp3.

Unless you hate harry potter you should look for: Harry And The Potters - Voldemort Cant Stop The Rock
It's James Kochalka in 'disguise.' His album Monkey Vs Robot is a clasic - Hockey Monkey may be one of the great all time songs. His style is... well, you can listen for yourself at the link.

bloc party and arctic monkeys (everywhere monkeys!) are nice, Franz Ferdinand's getting a fair amount of attention. The new Paul Weller album is mostly really good too. I've been surprised how little music makes it from brittan to the US and visa-versa lo these last decade and a half or so.

A great source for new music and such is www.wfmu.org They have archives of shows going back a long ways, most often with playlists. but where to start? "Ken's Wednesday Morning Timeslot" or "Strength through failure with fabio" is a good place. WFMU is probably the last remaining "freeform" radio station in the country. And on their shoe-string budget provide a better service than every comercial station combined.

Some already mentioned bands I've got to remention: The Jayhawks (earilier the better). Son Volt. * Yo La Tengo * . Big Star (not new at all). and I can't mention Big Star without saying you must check out The Nazz.

Is Tom Waits known in the Isles? probably goes without saying, but had to drop that in.

Now I've got to check out the ones you mentioned...

Edited by: anotherdrew at: 1/13/06 9:23 pm

The Covert War Against Rock

Postby thurnandtaxis » Sat Jan 14, 2006 12:19 am

This book by Alex Constantine is a great read. Some bits are a bit questionable, but all in all fascinating stuff. Great to use as an entry point for music buffs you're seeking to turn on to the notion of deep politics.

www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obi...13-4415829

never mind the music where's the protest?

Postby HMKGrey » Sat Jan 14, 2006 1:40 am

Speaking of music though...

Why is it that music is so damn safe these days?

Chris Martin from Coldplay has got three black stripes drawn on his hand to save the world. Bono is on first name terms with Bush - and unless I was reading his interview in SPIN all wrong he had traded in his right to criticize Bush shile on tour this past 12 month for some condescending BS over Africa.

I watch the VMA's and no one says a word.

We're at war (an illegal, immoral, God-fucking-awful one at that), the bill of rights is under siege, the constitution is withering on the vine, criminal despots run the place and everyone's mugging for the fucking camera?

WHY? HOW?

And Bono? Discuss.

Re: British

I find Arcade Fire to be a very impressive band. And it's true what Scollon said, that for whatever reason, from the 70s onward, Britain has produced most if not all of the great rock and roll bands. Kansas and Rush come to mind as exceptions, but they're conspicuous by their very non-Britishness. There's obviously some reason that Britain consistently leads the world of music, but I've no idea what it could be.

-Sepka the Space Weasel
