Jeff had problems with a couple jacking his blog posts and links a few months back. Basically, they appear to Blogger as mirrors of other blogs. Just a guess, but Jeff's new one is probably getting targeted as such due to the large amount of synchronous links that RI and RI v2.0 share in their index page sidebars.

so, basically people were

They were pretty weird looking, but I think the general consensus was the were harmless. We had a thread here about them some time back.

I have no idea what the purpose of them actually was.

This can be used as an infowar weapon to choke info flow, too.

AOL and their ilk filter out links and phrases by returning to sender with a note that 'sorry, it hit a spam filter.'

Spam-jacketing:
inoculating the internet against distributing information or sources to prevent the growth of unfiltered knowledge.

Presumably you're unable to see greencrw0's post? I can see it immediately above yours.

Some sites just re-post stuff from other (higher-trafficked) blogs. I see this now & then with sites I've been involved with -- and in general I don't care if they link back to the original site.

For example, there's a business devoted to making a living from google ads. Thousands are trying their hands at it, and hooray for them. But instead of generating any actual writing ("content"), they just cut-and-paste articles on the subject they're targetting. Certain types of cancer, for instance, have many thousands of blogs collecting cancer news and filled with google ads for those cancer attorneys.

Other, more mysterious "spam blogs" (often on WordPress, for some reason) lift huge blocks of text from another site (including the original links), but they've got no ads or any other sign of commerce.

I can understand blogger/google having scripts that put the bulls-eye on new blogs that seem to be copies of other blogs. But with all the other problems RI has been having, it is a little tough to believe it's *all* innocent.
