The Maze Scare

Postby Jezebelladonna » Sat Jul 22, 2006 2:16 am
Has anyone else seen this? It seems to begin as a game requiring intense concentration and focus (and volume), but several minutes into it, the screen switches abrupty to a close-up of face reminiscent of Linda Blair in full-on Exorcist possessory mode, accompanied by screaming.

Video sites displays a number of videos purporting to capture the reaction of the victims of the maze scare prank.
Not my idea of entertaining, but...

I am noticing a disturbing number of these videos capturing children, young children, falling victim to this prank...crying and freaking out....

A seach of "maze scare" in youtube shows lotsa videos described variously as "my kid brother getting scared..." "the maze game scared my baby nephew" "my little cousin..." "my youngins..." usually followed with an "lol!"

WTF?

I'm not a parent, but this is horrifying to me. I'd want to kill someone who pulled this "prank" on my nephew.

Is this random sadism?

There are like a million of these things on the internet... "what's wrong with this picture... hint; turn your volume up" etcc + then a monster pops up...

pretty unimaginative + mean spirited trick. Also very easy to detect the setup for such a thing once you are internet-literate enought to be aware of this catagory of prank...

Right. It's a mean-spirited prank....

but my concern is when adults plunk children down in front of the monitor for this prank. And then film the kid freaking out and crying. And then post the film for others to "enjoy".

what the hell is that?

I agree that doing it to very young kids (or old people, for that matter) is pretty stupid, but... hasn't everybody jumped out with a roar at a younger cousin or sibling from around a blind corner in their lives? This seems to be an electronic extention of that not-particularly-disturbing tendancy among humans to find other people's adrenaline reactions amusing for some reason.

Is it just me or does anyone else sense the fear level in the world being raised slowly in volume? This is part of the general campaign to raise the fear level. Fearful people are more easily controlled.

I'm not sure if it increases fear. Of course it does for a good 10 minutes, or maybe all night if you're home alone (like I was when I saw them), but I don't think it has a long term effect of induced fearfulness. It's more like innoculation, as the mass media of our time seem disinclined to leave anything hidden or sacred, and reveal everything.

If there is any mid to long term effect it would probably be to induce stress, which could be manifested as anxiousness.
