contingency plan if blog remains busted?

Postby Rigorous Intuition » Thu Jun 08, 2006 2:17 am

I've registed rigorousintuition.ca - now what?

Blogger was nice and simple when it worked. Now it isn't, for me at least, and I'm getting the sick feeling it never will again.

I hate the thought of moving, since there are thousands of incoming and outgoing links and redirecting the webtraffic would be a challenge, but it may be necessary. Ideally I'd like to import what's already there as is, but I know, this isn't an ideal world.

So...what to do next?

Ayieieieiei ...

Time to make the transition methinks ...

Time for loyal, dedicated, addicted forum visitors to dig-down and make a donation to help one of the best parapolitical blogs and discussion boards make the switch (self included, natch; Can't think of a better cause); Perhaps keep ezboard going as a mirror site for awhile, with express directions to the new link -- Start doing research on a darn good server to transition to, reader suggestions (sorry, I don't have any recommendations -- But yer probably needing a high-traffic server service with room to keep growing.

Has ezboard technical dept. given any satisfaction on just what the deal IS?

Puttin' out good energy for a good solution (at the very least, semi-permanent -- one that has a archive function).

Damn shame ezboard is crappin out.
Starman

dont give up, get them to fix the damn thing. Have someone you can trust look at it, find a local computer/internet guru on criagslist and have them by to see if they can see a fix. sometimes a second set of eyes is all it takes to fix these kinda problems. You've got a lot of traffic going thru there and I wouldn't recomend giving up and moving on lightly.

does blogger let you see and directly modify files? Maybe there's something messed up on your index page.

failing that, there are good web hosting companies, I can help you find one but you'd want a deal that wouldn't cause you to have to pay a lot of extra money if bandwidth useage goes up because a large audience comes suddenly, be wary of deals where you could be surcharged for bandwidth usage.

(moving away from easyboard would be nice tho, a good web host can typicly throw in a nice forum system and there are free packages that seem better than this.) [to clarify blogger is google ezboard is ezboard, two different companies]

One other idea, I see they talk about FTP so you probably have a zip file archive of your whole current site, if you could send that somehow I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can spot the problem. we could even upload it to a new temporary blog and hack at it there til it works again, then implement whatever the fix turns out to be in the real blog.

Edited by: anotherdrew at: 6/8/06 12:40 am

Blogger's affiliated with Ezboard?

If so, I beg you to consider trying phpBB as a forum software:

www.phpbb.com/

No suggestions for a blog tool. unfortunately, but I think I can speak for most of us and say with confidence that whatever we can do to make the transition an easy one for you, that's something you can rest easy on..

If you're going to transfer the blog posts, this is the time to decide about adding myspace to the roster as well..At least the archives..

Just let us know what you need.

well, you could start a new blogspot blog. They obviously suck but you could just tack a 2 on the end and have an explanation at the top. Google would find you pretty fast. Not ideal...

Actually, what I think you could do is just save what's on the front page right now on your harddrive...pull the code...not off the actual page we see. Then you could delete all of it. Something is corrupted...or else someone is not wanting you to publish. If it's the former, by deleting everything, and then rebuilding, maybe you can get it back. The risk, of course, is that you can't and then there's nothing but a blank page. WAit...that's not true...if it won't republish, then nothing will happen...so maybe that will work.

I also wonder if you could "trick it". Have you tried editing an already existing post? If that works, you could edit the last post that shows to explain what's going on and provide links from there.

You also might be able to simply mess with the template itself and republish...if that's so, you could put some very obvious text and links where the title goes.

There are other blog hosting spots as well. I'm not that familiar with them, but you could even use the same name.

Editing an actual web page is not hard, but designing it in the first place can be tricky. However, if you followed the basic design of the current blog...that's pretty simple. Ultimately, it would allow you to do far more.

I think it may also be possible for someone of greater skill than I to write a program to pull much of the material here off into at least text files if nothing else. In fact, I'll ask around.

I say get a server, install a copy of wordpress, and start copying the archives. If there are people on here you can trust, you can give them temporary accounts so they can help to copy over old posts.

For my hosting I use a VPS from kualo.com (I'm not affiliated). It's $65.00 monthly.

'Blogger's affiliated with Ezboard?'

Postby Rigorous Intuition » Thu Jun 08, 2006 2:45 am

Ezboard has it's own issues, but it's unaffiliated with Blogger. My problem now is the blog - the main page isn't updating. I've tried all the known tweaks - cleaning cookies, swapping browsers, logging out - nothing is working now.

Right now there's the June archive on the main page which can be accessed for current posts, but if this slips into July there's no July archive.

Jeff, my server space is from a guy in the UK, and he's excellent. He mainly hosts musicians and artists, but due to the moderating I do for him on his audio forum I've little doubt that he'd give you a really good deal on some server space, and even throw in an installed phpBB forum to boot..

I've emailed you some details.

Could you not negotiate with blogger to get them to move a mirror of everything to RigorousIntuition2 or something like that. This would be a temporary solution, as I doubt you want to stay with them, but that would get you through. If this is all deliberate, of course, then not much you can do about that. I've been nervous about Blogspot since Google took over.

How responsive are they being? Are they keeping in touch with you?

Have a look:

Quote:

Blogger Status
Wednesday, June 07, 2006

This morning, a hardware problem we had been struggling with over the past several days suddenly worsened. re: "Have a look:"

Yeah, I know, that's why I'm worried. I don't like them telling me it's fixed when I still can't publish and I can see other blogspot blogs publishing fine. I don't even know if the problem I'm experiencing is related to that particular hardware issue. I haven't even had a single response to my daily emails.

Can't seem to post if I leave this field blank...

Postby steve vegas » Thu Jun 08, 2006 3:46 am

I think you should just start over at the new site. Your ISP or domain registrar should be able to seamlessly redirect traffic to your new site, that handles the incoming links, outgoing links shouldn't be a problem at either site. You can just note and post a link on the new site back to the blogspot site. After blogger is fixed just continue updating both sites (while still redirecting traffic to the new site).
