People able to "sense" surveillance equipment

Postby Martha » Mon Sep 12, 2005 10:03 pm

Someone that I know, claims that they are able to "sense" surveillance equipment.

Like at the store, or more specifically in an office where they worked.

Is this possible? How would they do it?

Edited by: Martha at: 9/12/05 8:04 pm

Try Sheldrake's "The Sense of Being Stared At"

Postby starroute » Mon Sep 12, 2005 10:26 pm

That would probably answer your questions as well as anything.

Rupert Sheldrake is the morphic field guy. He's been doing a lot on parapsychology lately. Here's his webpage:

www.sheldrake.org/

I got a feeling I should keep my mouth shut, but--
As an ongoing casually-conducted experiment, I have found that with remarkable consistency, if I stare intently at a woman's butt, she will, without turning around or looking behind her, reach around with one hand and just touch where I'm looking--as if she "felt" something there.
I'm a little embarrassed to tell you this, Martha, but I've observed this phenomenon for years, and there may be some legitimacy to your acquaintance's claim that he or she can sense when he or she is being watched . . .

hahaha RH.

I'm pretty sure that's not what this person meant.

Specifically the story told to me was that this person's employer had called them into the manager's office about something. This person said that they could sense "something" coming from a corner of the room - and told the manager that there was some sort of device in that corner. After a bit, the manager finally admitted that there was a surveillance camera there.

I don't know if the person already knew the camera was there or not. I was just wondering if something like that would be actually possible or if they were pulling my leg.

staring at a woman's butt

Postby rapt » Mon Sep 12, 2005 11:08 pm

Ha Rollick. A simpler and (to me) more consistent indicator is that a woman being looked at glances down at her chest, just to verify that all is in good order. Granted, this is true only for the less confident members of that gender. Surprisingly consistent behavior though.

Well see I wasn't really trying to be funny, I think it's fascinating that in these circumstances I don't think the "subject" knows I'm staring at her butt, it really seems like a sixth-sense kind of thing.

On the other hand I worked in private security for a time and I monitored surveillance cameras in a large public facility, and it was surprising how many people were totally oblivious to the camera's presence (you should have seen some of the things I saw on camera!).

Some people are more sensitive to electromagnetic fields than others. When my son was small, if he spent more than an hour watching TeeVee he would develop huge dark circles under his eyes; holding a magnet gave him a headache; he could (and still can) hear the high-pitched whine from a turned-off but plugged-in electrical appliance etc. From his toddler days he could point out the electric outlets in a room whether they were visible or not. He feels pressure in his head when walking under one of those transformers you see on telephone poles and still gets headaches from fluorescent lights. He ALWAYS knows where security cameras are.

There is a belief among some Shamen and the like, that The Look is a line of palpable power/energy. That's how the women of whom Rollick speaks "know" that someone is looking at them, on some subtle level.

This probably goes for cameras also. --MaryK

electricity

Postby Nonny » Tue Sep 13, 2005 7:59 am

I have never been able to sleep on a bed that has an electric blanket... even if it was not turned on.

Also, could never fall asleep with glasses on because the lenses seemed to bore into my eyes when they were closed.

Otherwise, no trouble sleeping.

Weird.

Re: electricity sensitivity

Postby Martha » Tue Sep 13, 2005 9:57 am

Maybe that's it. Thanks.

Isn't the Taos hum supposed to be caused by electricity? I wonder if that's why some people hear it and some don't?

----
edited cause I was in a hurry when I posted this morning. Sorry.

Edited by: Martha at: 9/13/05 11:27 am

Re: knowing when someone is staring at you

Postby Martha » Tue Sep 13, 2005 1:34 pm

Sorry RH, I thought you and Rapt were joking around.

After thinking about it, I think I've felt something like that, like being watched. But it was at places where I know there weren't any cameras. Like at a relative's house and outside.

Maybe it was a ghost, since it was an old house and I know that 2 people had died there (at the relative's house).

One time I was very sleepy on the job, working on a film, and had my eyes completely closed, my arms crossed, sitting in a chair while the filming was going on.

I had the strongest sense someone was looking at me and I opened my eyes to see my boss glaring at me.

I definitely felt it.

It happens all the time. You suddenly find yourself turning around and making eye contact with someone who was staring at you.

Or you stare at someone and suddenly they turn around and look right at you.

People can definitely sense when they're being looked at.

There's no western scientific explanation for it. Yet.

For the time being consider it "supernatural".

One thing:

Postby glubglubglub » Tue Sep 13, 2005 9:58 pm

In most urban-urbanish environments you're under constant, heavy surveillance; I'd be cynical of anyone's abilities to detect surveillance equipment under those circumstances unless their 'spidey sense' was constantly firing.

I would not at all be surprised at someone having the ability to detect (covert) human surveillance, though; starroute's got the right info on that front.

ghosts

Postby maggrwaggr » Wed Sep 14, 2005 3:20 am

Ghosts can certainly have that affect.

I've lived in two haunted houses now, and in the first one (the main one) not only did other people (who knew nothing of the ghost) report that they felt they were being looked at when they were in private, there were also several times when I suddenly had that feeling you get when you're about to bump into somebody. Extremely strong, usually on the main staircase, at the level at which you could, were you coming down from upstairs, see into the lower part of the house.
