Sheikh Gilani vs. the Right Wingnuts

Postby albion » Tue Apr 04, 2006 8:37 pm

Hey all, thought I'd give a heads-up to an ongoing blog face-off involving some right-wingers and Sheikh Mubarik Ali Hasmi Shah Gilani and his organization Jamaat al-Fuqra, aka Muslims of America. "Pir" Gilani is a Pakistani cleric who has been rumored or alleged to have been associated with

-"Shoebomber" Richard Reid
-"Serial Sniper" John Muhammad
-Clement Rodney Hampton-El ('93 WTC bombing, Afghan Mujahideen)
-Osama bin Laden
-the murder of Daniel Pearl
-drugs and weapons trafficking

Gilani has also suggested (to Dan Rather, no less) that terrorism should be blamed on jinni (traditional muslim trickster entities). The best piece on that is certainly this Fantastic Planet post.

Anyway, a couple of right-wing blogs have been doing some google-type research into Gilani & co.; they've also hooked up with a private investigator who's done some footwork. The main blog appears to be The Politics of CP. Links to other sites there.

I've been following this off and on for a few months with some interest, but have been kind of reluctant to post about it because the bloggers in question are, frankly, right wing nut jobs. Anti-muslim bigots, complete with links to Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Daniel Pipes, Michael Ledeen, Oliver North, etc.

I know, Really Bad. Hence my trepidation.

But I reckon in the last couple days it's gotten particularly interesting. Gilani has responded to some of the the claims made against him. He denies any connection with Richard Reid or Daniel Pearl, and goes off about "Quranic miracle healing" with water "that contained special prayers and Divine Words." Claims he's just a peaceful Sufi. Etc.

There's also a link to a brand new blog written by an "ex-Fuqra member and Gilani follower" who says he spent 9 years with Gilani, and is not happy about it.

If these bloggers are anything other than the outraged patriots they present themselves as, I have yet to see it any evidence of it. I will say, some of them are pushing the "Clash of Civilizations" line awfully hard. They've gotten some coverage on FOX and WorldNut. And yet, Gilani and his crew are pretty suspicious also. The whole damn thing's suspicious. I won't attempt to adjudicate all the claims and counter-claims, just provide the link with caveats.

In short, take it with buckets of salt, but take it.

Quote:
Monday, April 03, 2006

A Response to Gilani's Claims

As noted in a recent post, Sheik Mubarik Ali Gilani, widely known as the founder of Islamist militant group Al Fuqra and its front organization Muslims of America (MOA), has issued a response to the investigative report that was released last month by the Northeast Intelligence Network and myself.

In his rambling 14-page diatribe, Gilani makes numerous ridiculous claims and merely reinforces the radical label that has been placed upon his name. If his attempt was to deflect attention away from the accusations against him, he failed miserably. By publicly releasing this report, he has surely placed himself under even more scrutiny. Notoriously secretive, silence was likely his best policy up to this point.

His claims of having “mystical powers” do not particularly appeal to most rational people. That tends to set off the majority of tinfoil hat detectors. To quote Jack Nicholson from a movie years ago, “Go sell crazy somewhere else. I'm glad you can find humor in that, NewKid. Reid was indeed pretty pathetic. But I think you missed the point. The point is, the whole Gilani saga is totally imbued in high weirdness. I find it difficult to believe that this is all just the usual anti-muslim hysteria and scapegoating, although that is certainly an aspect of it.

For example, in the latest post by the new blogger who claims to be a disgruntled ex-Fuqra member, he talks about what he says is his role hiding a fugutive assasin for Gilani in 1990. The assasin was, according to CP, "Caucasian, just like Fuqra's bombmaker, Stephen Paster." The man he had killed was an Egyptian biochemist and mathemetician who had (according to Wikipedia) "claimed that he discovered an intricate numerical pattern in the text of the Qur'an involving the number 19 mentioned in sura 74. He published several books on this subject." Oh, and this happened in Tuscon, Arizona.

politicsofcp.blogspot.com...inton.html
fuqra.blogspot.com/2006/0...ng-on.html
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashad_Khalifa

Now, if you combine all that with Daniel Pearl, "Sniper" Muhammad, the jinni and so forth...then toss in a bunch of wingnut bloggers who hire a Private Eye to sneak into one of Gilani's forest compounds, maybe then you can see what I mean: whichever bits of the Gilani saga happen to be true, or significant - or not - it's all very weird.

Hell, maybe it's just normal for the times.

"So many stories and all are sad, many involve the women getting left behind and the children suffering. I pray that these innocent people who are looking for guidance get away from the Sheikh as I have done, when you have children growing up thinking that a old man in pakistan can see what you are doing here in America just by closing his eyes and chanting some mystical words, then I believe these childrens hearts will be dead before they even have a chance to blossom.
May God save the people from Sheikh Gilani and his calamity upon this earth."

Oh I agree. I didn't mean it as a commentary on your post at all. I was moved to comment purely on the absurdity of those two individuals and the whole "sniper" episode. But after a second look at the whole post, I agree this is all quite bizarre.

Somewhat off topic, Albion, but certainly within the domain of high weirdness; if you have some free time to read these, I'd love to know your thoughts about either of these affairs.

ww2.bakersfield.com/2003/lords/

www.crimelibrary.com/terrorists_spies/terrorists/larry_ford/1.html

Those stories are news to me, NK. I only skimmed them for now, but it looks like they're sadly "normal for the times." Oh, and pardon the defensiveness, I guess it comes with the territory of linking to wingnuts.

Thanks for the links, Albion. I've been interested in Gilani too. Didn't know the anti-Muslim wingnuts were, I guess it's natural since this guy's organization has a presence in America.

Have you read "Who Killed Daniel Pearl"? Bernard Henri-Lévy writes that an old video exists, from '93 or thereabouts, that shows Gilani and Osama bin Laden hand in hand at a "terrorism conference" in Sudan. Lévy writes that Osama appeared subordinate to Gilani, which I think is interesting. I haven't been able to find this video on the net, don't know if it's available to the public.

But in light of this link, it's perhaps surprising that Gilani's group was taken off the official US terrorist organization list in 2000. Hmm.

The various weird stuff that happened to Lévy as he tried, unsuccesfully, to get an interview with Gilani in Pakistan is interesting too. Naturally, Lévy speculates that Pearl was killed to prevent him from talking with Gilani. Gilani definitely seems to be an "asset" of some sort of the ISI. Lévy also speculates about possible links to US intelligence, if not today, then back in the 80s during the "Afghan jihad".

Hi Qutb. I thought you might find that interesting. Who Killed Daniel Pearl sits on my shelf (alas) unread. It might be time to pick that up. I am familiar with some of Levy's claims, though.

As for the wingers, I think it's curious that it's not Michael Chertoff and Homeland Security who are putting the spotlight on Gilani, it's a few bloggers and a private eye (whatever undisclosed connections they might have). If there's any truth to all the rumors and allegations swirling around Gilani, it's odd that he isn't as famous as, say Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. And how it is that al-Fuqra still have such a sizeable US presence despite the ongoing dragnet of the so-called "war on terror"? Complicity? Bribery? Blackmail? The jinni? It's mysterious.

Though with the increased attention, maybe their luck is about to run out.

Looks like the link above to that new blog is already dead. It appears to have been changed to:

fuqra.blogspot.com/

It's got a new name & layout, & there's a new post today. It's only been online a few days. Since the guy claims to be a disgruntled former member of Gilani's organization, it's probably worth keeping an eye on...with appropriate skepticism, naturally.
