'US air raid' kills Afghan guards

At least 24 security workers at a construction site in Afghanistan's Ghazni province have been killed in suspected US air raids.

The deputy governor of the province southwest of the capital Kabul called Sunday's incident a "brutal attack".

A provincial government source told the Reuters news agency that US-led forces had called in an air raid after fighters attacked several posts operated by the security company that guards the road construction project.

The US military said it called in the aerial bombardment after its forces came under fire, but cannot at this time confirm the identity of the victims.

The latest air raids come just days after the Afghan government said an attack by US-led forces killed nine Afghan soldiers in the southeastern province of Khost.

Hundreds of civilians have been killed in operations by Nato and US-led international forces this year, according to Afghan officials and aid groups.

Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Kabul, said that such attack had created "an anti-American, anti-British sentiment in the country".

"During the last few weeks and months there have been bombardments in Khost, Herat and Helmand, where there were civilian casualties," he said.

"The Americans are saying constatntly that they are very shrewd, very meticulous when it comes to bombarding such sites ... but the people say they have seen many, many cases where the targets were not Taliban fighters."

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Afghanistan was told by a Taliban spokesman that 17 people working on a road construction project had been abducted in the eastern province of Kunar.

The Taliban has reportedly said that it will only free the captives once the construction project, which is funded by the US, is abandoned.

Taliban fighters have picked up there attacks in recent months and the United Nations has warned people not to expect the usual lull in violence over the winter months.

Air raids 'kill Afghan women'

Two Afghan villagers are alleging that dozens of women and children attending a wedding party in southern Afghanistan were killed or wounded by air raids.

The witnesses were in the main hospital in Kandahar city on Wednesday alongside wounded relatives following air raids they say took place on Monday.

The US military says it does not yet have any information on the incident.

Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, appeared to refer to the alleged attack in a news conference held to congratulate Barack Obama, winner of the US presidential election.

Karzai said there were civilian casualties as a result of air raids in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province.

David Chater, reporting for Al Jazeera from Afghanistan, said he had been told by a cameraman that a coalition patrol had gone through a village and was fired on by Taliban forces at some distance.

"As a result of that Taliban fire they called in closed air support and there was a wedding party going on in that village - there were some 90 people in a house - and the missile landed there," he said.

He said there was no confirmation either from multinational forces, the Americans or indeed from anybody about the number of casualties.

A correspondent reporting for Al Jazeera said around 30 Afghan civilians, including women and children, had been killed in the air raids.

Dozens were still trapped under the debris, the correspondent said.

US troops fighting off a Taleban ambush bombed a wedding party in southern Afghanistan and killed about 40 civilians, mainly women and children, local people and government officials said yesterday.

American officials confirmed last night that an incident was under investigation by the US military and the Afghan Government. Colonel Greg Julian, a US army spokesman, told The Times: “We are taking this very seriously. We are extremely sorry if there have been civilian casualties sustained during this operation. It is the worst possible outcome if civilians are harmed as a result of our trying to defend them.”

He confirmed that US forces had been operating in the Shah Wali Kot area when the alleged incident took place on Monday afternoon, and that airstrikes were called in. Injured people arrived in Kandahar overnight on Monday and hospital officials said that 16 men and dozens of women had been admitted.

Reports from Kandahar suggested that there was a high proportion of women casualties because the wedding was segregated, in accordance with local custom, and airstrikes hit the women’s half. A local reporter who reached the scene said that ten women, four men and 23 children were killed. Some estimates of the dead from local people were much higher.

Civilians who accompanied the wounded to Kandahar city said that US forces had been moving through the mountainous area when their convoy was ambushed. During several hours of fighting American troops and aircraft attacked a mudwalled castle, a common structure in rural Kandahar, where the wedding was taking place. “Taleban attacked the troops. Then the troops bombed our village and killed scores of people. There are still people under rubble,” said Shah Mohammad, who was accompanying the injured to hospital.

Another man in the hospital, Abdul Zahir, 24, said he was the brother of the bride. She was seriously wounded in the attack. He said that the bombing lasted for five hours after the battle broke out. Mr Zahir sat next to a bed containing his three cousins, Noor Ahmad, Hazrat Sadiq and Mohammad Rafiq, aged between 3 and 5, all of whom were wounded in the attack. He said that eight family members died and 14 were injured.

“We are aware that civilians have died in airstrikes conducted by foreign forces in Shah Wali Kot, but at this time we don’t know how many,” Ahmad Wali Karzai, the head of the provincial council in Kandahar and brother of the Afghan President, said.

At a press conference to honour the election of Barack Obama yesterday, President Karzai made a pointed call to curtail the use of bombing by Western forces. “We cannot win the fight against terrorism with airstrikes,” he said. “This is my first demand of the new President of the United States: to put an end to civilian casualties.”

The Taleban issued a press release saying that one of their fighters was killed and two wounded in the fighting. The group claimed to have killed 13 American soldiers and destroyed an armoured vehicle.
