The problem you're going to run into trying to fax by cable modem is that at some point, you need to convert the signal into a telephone call, and get it onto the public switched phone network so that the fax machine at the other end can receive it. Both of the options that people have pointed out are fax servers, designed to interface with a dialup modem. They're not going to work for you.*

There are a number of services which will receive your document file, and send it out as a fax. They are, however, going to charge you by the individual fax, because they're providing that service. If you're just sending one or two, that's the way to go (or just run down to Kinkos). If you plan on regularly sending and receiving faxes, the best thing to do is to get an old-fashioned fax/modem (most modems sold in the last ten years are natively capable of sending faxes, and have fax server software bundled with them) and install that in addition to your cable modem. That assumes, of course, that you have a landline, or a cell phone that can be hooked to your computer. Fax modems are cheap - you shouldn't have to pay more than $20, and can maybe get someone to give you an old one for free and install it too, if you've got techily inclined friends.

-Sepka the Space Weasel

* I feel moved to add Professor Pan's useful disclaimer that this assertion that an idea won't work is in no way meant to intimidate, disparage, belittle, disrupt, etc...

thank you two.
I don't have a dial up landline, my landline is cable too. (but when you hook a regular fax machine to the cable landline, it will fax as usual and also receive faxes from regular phones with no special adaptation. (well, it has a modem which perhaps does that, I wouldn't know).

But the software given here by johnny does say it works via email (web-fax) so i suppose that should work for me, if I ever crack it.

Fax Modems are Obsolete

Sepka,

I appreciate you jumping in and trying to help hava out, but your info is a bit behind the times.

I work as a computer engineer and I use E-FAX everyday from an ethernet t1 line to another t1 line, and it's all digital, nowadays.

Efaxing has thankfully removed the need for fax modems (which I used to build and repair in the 90s).

I stand corrected. I'll admit the last time I designed anything more substantial than a home LAN was 1997. How does the fax get from the T1 to a PSTN-connected fax, then?

-Sepka the Space Weasel

So, the short answer to the original question is "no", unless you take out the "free" prerequisite. You could probably do this for free using Hylafax or some other free software, but it requires knowledge and time.

Quote:
ethernet t1 line to another t1 line

This isn't Slashdot, I know -- but if you're going to be a stickler for details, you shouldn't throw around mixed terminology like that right after giving your credentials. A T1 is not Ethernet.

Fax modems are not "obsolete". A fax machine contains a modem, which is part of what makes it a fax machine in the first place. Network faxing requires something, somewhere out in network cloud having a telco-tethered modem to communicate with other fax machines. Anything else is just "file transfer".
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."
Edited by: thoughtographer at: 5/17/06 4:59 pm

I do this dozens of times a day and I've set the software up on hundreds of computers.
You don't know what you're talking about, as usual.

All you need nowadays is Efax software, a computer and a printer.
You send the eFax from the computer to another computer via ethernet.
To print a recieved fax...simply use a printer that is networked to the computer, or attached via parallel port or USB cable, so you can print out the faxes.

It's really that simple.

No, I'm not wrong. I'm wrong sometimes, but not right now. If you send an EFax to a computer, it comes in via your e-mail.
The file will generally have the phone number it was sent from and will have a .tiff extension.
You can open it and view it with Microsoft Office Document Imaging software( or you can use freeware, if you don't have that).

If you send an EFax to a fax machine, it will print out just like a regular fax.

So you're wrong and you need to shut up.
You just don't know what you're talking about.

I do this dozens of times a day and you flip burgers or whatever you do everyday.

Kindly f*ck off.

How does the fax get from the internet to the telco network? If you're putting that fax into your T1 as TCP/IP, how does it end up coming through someone's phone lines as modulated audio? There has to be an interface somewhere. Is there one that you're allowed to use for free?

-Sepka the Space Weasel
