FBI informant involved with accused assassin
of British MP

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/tho ... te-n595286

Thomas Mair, Suspect in Murder of UK Lawmaker Jo Cox, Attended White Supremacy Meeting: Report

The man suspected of killing a British lawmaker once attended a meeting of American white supremacists in London, the Southern Poverty Law Center said in a report published Sunday.

A court artist sketch shows Thomas Mair appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, Saturday. ELIZABETH COOK / Reuters
Jo Cox, 41, a respected Labour Party MP, died Thursday after Thomas Mair, 52, allegedly stabbed and shot her and referenced a far right anti-immigrant group opposed to Britain's membership in the European Union.

The SPLC, which tracks hate groups, said that Mair was one of between 15 and 20 people to appear at the gathering 16 years ago, which aimed to expand an American neo-Nazi's "white power" music business into Europe.

The report cites Todd Blodgett, a former GOP domestic policy analyst and consultant who became involved in the radical right in the 1990s and helped arrange the London meeting. In May 2000, when the group convened, Blodgett was working as a paid FBI informant, according to the report.

The book is about Spiritual Warfare and how God used him to solve some of the biggest Cases in the FBI and powerfully minister to those in need, while on the job. Most of his successful cases had nothing to do with sophisticated FBI techniques. However, it was by the leading of the Holy Spirit he was able to become one of America's Finest in the FBI and be labeled an "expert," at the same time – one of the greatest Servants in the Ministry.

"I want the readers to realize that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things to accomplish His will in the Earth Realm," states the author. "All you have to be is willing and obedient."

As a 22-1/2 year veteran with the FBI, Frank Burton Jr. was justifiably labeled as an "expert." He was a Hostage

Meet the FBI Informant Who Organized Neo-Nazi Gathering Attended by Jo Cox Murder Suspect in 2000

We turn now to look at Thomas Mair, the British man who killed British parliamentarian Jo Cox last week. Mair reportedly yelled out "Britain First" during the attack—a reference to the far-right, anti-immigrant political party of the same name which is pushing for Britain to leave the EU in tomorrow’s Brexit referendum. In court on Friday, Mair gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain." Cox was a vocal advocate for Britain to remain in the European Union. More information is coming to light about Mair’s ties to neo-Nazi groups in the United States and Britain. Meanwhile, a former paid FBI informant named Todd Blodgett has revealed he met Thomas Mair at a neo-Nazi gathering that the informant set up in London in 2000. Joining us now is Todd Blodgett, who once worked with several leaders of the far right, including Willis Carto, who founded the Liberty Lobby, and William Pierce, leader of the neo-Nazi National Alliance.

AMY GOODMAN: We move on to our next segment now, the story of the assassination of a British Labour leader. Juan?

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, we turn now to Britain, which is continuing to mourn last week’s murder of parliamentarian Jo Cox. She was stabbed and shot last week in her district after meeting with constituents. Her murderer, Thomas Mair, reportedly yelled out "Britain First" during the attack—a reference to the far-right, anti-immigrant political party of the same name which is pushing for Britain to leave the EU in tomorrow’s Brexit referendum. Cox was a vocal advocate for Britain to remain in the European Union.

More information is coming to light about Mair’s ties to neo-Nazi groups in the United States and Britain. The Southern Poverty Law Center here in the U.S. has revealed Mair is a longtime supporter of the neo-Nazi National Alliance. Documents released by the center show Mair has spent over $500 buying periodicals and other items from the group, including a manual that contained information on how to build a pistol. In addition, The Daily Telegraph is reporting Mair subscribed to S.A. Patriot, a South African magazine published by White Rhino Club, a pro-apartheid group.

AMY GOODMAN: Meanwhile, a former paid FBI informant named Todd Blodgett has revealed he met Thomas Mair at a neo-Nazi gathering that the informant set up in London in 2000. Beginning in the mid-'90s, Blodgett worked with several leaders of the far right, including Willis Carto, who founded the Liberty Lobby, and William Pierce, leader of the neo-Nazi National Alliance. Blodgett was also a co-owner of Resistance Records, the world's largest neo-Nazi music label. Todd Blodgett is joining us now from his home in Iowa.

Todd Blodgett, welcome to Democracy Now! Tell us what you know about this man, Thomas Mair, who killed Jo Cox.

TODD BLODGETT: Yes, thank you. I met Tommy—he was known as Tommy when I met him in about May of 2000. I had just begun working as a paid FBI informant in March of that year. William Pierce, who was the main guy with Resistance Records, but also my co-owner, wanted to convene a meeting in London, because there was a Leeds chapter and another chapter of the National Alliance. And the purpose of the meeting was to promote Resistance Records, let people know that William Pierce was the—was the new owner of it—he bought it from Willis Carto—and also to gain readerdom, gain more customers and get distributors for Resistance Records. And Mair was one of the people invited to the meeting. There were about maybe 17 or 18 people at that meeting. And it took place just off of the Strand in London in the spring of 2000. And as I said, he attended the meeting along with Stevie Cartwright, Richard Barnbrook, Nick Griffin, who was sort of like the David Duke of England at that time, and several other people who were either members of the National Alliance or supporters of the NA.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Now, why were you at that meeting representing Mr. Pierce?

TODD BLODGETT: Well, of course, Pierce did not know that I had agreed to work for the bureau at that point. And he wanted to go over to England—

AMY GOODMAN: For the FBI.

TODD BLODGETT: For—yeah, for the FBI, that’s correct. He, himself, wanted to go, but he was precluded by law from being able to go there, due to the fact that he couldn’t get in. I mean, his views kept him out of—out of England, so he sent me in his stead, because he and I were the co-owners of Resistance Records at that time. And when I began with the FBI, I told them about what Pierce wanted to do. And right away, they said, "Well, we’re going to accompany you." So, the day before I arrived in London, two FBI agents, an IRS agent and a JTTF agent—that would be the Joint Terrorism Task Force—flew in ahead of me, and they had me meet with the two people, two guys, from the MI5. They gave me a cellphone to use when I was there and that kind of thing. So, that’s how it all worked out.

AMY GOODMAN: Why did you decide to work for the FBI? I mean, were you a neo-Nazi true believer?

TODD BLODGETT: I was never a true believer. I was never a Holocaust denier. I’m not a bigot or a racist or anything. I was basically—I guess the best way to say it is I was—I was greedy. I was an opportunistic profiteer. I didn’t look at the consequences to myself or to others of what I was doing. And I never wanted to be a Resistance Records shareholder, but Willis Carto of Liberty Lobby owed me money. And when he went bankrupt, he—when Liberty Lobby went bankrupt, they gave me stock in Resistance Records in lieu of that, and that’s how I became a co-owner.

What had happened with regard to Pierce was, is that after the deal was signed with Pierce and he gave me a consulting contract he insisted I take as part of my stock sale—he wouldn’t buy the shares without it—we went to a place called the University Club of D.C. The Washington Post got a hold of the article, and it caused a big uproar there, and I was expelled from the club. I was given the option to resign or be expelled. I was expelled. And basically, that’s when the FBI caught notice of this, and the agents came to my office in downtown D.C., and they said, "Look, we’re not after you, but we know you’ve worked with all these people—Willis Carto, Pierce, David Duke—all the head honchos among the racist right, as a profiteer. Will you help us?" And that’s when I agreed to—I agreed to go on as a paid informant.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Now, this meeting that occurred in 2000 in—I think it was in Leeds in England, these were some of the top neo-Nazi or white supremacist leaders in England. What kind of interaction did you have with Thomas Mair? And what impression did you take away from him at that meeting?

TODD BLODGETT: Well, first of all, the meeting was actually in downtown London, not Leeds, but there were several people from the Leeds chapter at this meeting. And I—as far as Thomas Mair, I would say that most people describe him—he was kind of like a working-class guy, but very well read. I mean, he was discussing a book or two that he had read by David Irving, the Holocaust-denying pseudohistorian, who I also monitored. He would probably—I guess the best way to describe him is just nondescript, well mannered. When you go to a meeting like this, any kind of gathering, the guys—they’re always all guys—there’s a lot of bravado, a lot of macho, a lot of braggadocio going on. People talk about who they beat up last week and how they took on six guys and kicked their butt. They brag about their womanizing. Mair was none of those. He didn’t do any of that. He got—he came by himself. He actually left by himself. As he got there, he was respected by the people that were there. He knew some. They knew him by name. He was not an outgoing guy. If you were to ask me at the end of that meeting, say, a wall of guys there, who would have been the least likely to even start a fistfight, I would have said Tommy Mair.

AMY GOODMAN: According to British media reports, Thomas Mair, or Tommy Mair, as you call him, was a subscriber to the pro-apartheid magazine, South African Patriot in Exile.

TODD BLODGETT: I read that.

AMY GOODMAN: This week, the Southern Poverty Law Center published two letters that Mair wrote to editors of the magazine. In 1999, Thomas Mair wrote, quote, "I was glad you strongly condemned 'collaborators' in the White South African population. In my opinion the greatest enemy of the old Apartheid system was not the African National Congress and the Black masses but White liberals and traitors." And then, in a 1991 letter to the publication, Mair wrote, quote, "The nationalist movement in the U.K. also continues to fight on against the odds. ... Despite everything I still have faith that the White Race will prevail, both in Britain and in South Africa, but I fear that it’s going to be a very long and very bloody struggle." Those the words of Thomas Mair. Todd Blodgett, what was your reaction when you heard who was the man who murdered the Labour MP, Jo Cox?

TODD BLODGETT: When I first saw his picture, and I recognized him right off, when I first heard his name, I remembered it, you know, my first reaction was, gosh, I mean, this is—aside from the fact it’s a horrible thing, I thought, you know, this wasn’t the kind of guy I would have picked out to do that. I would have thought someone like Stevie Cartwright or someone would be more likely to do that. They were the more—you know, the more brutal types. But then I realized a lot of people that I monitored, which included a guy named Wade Page, who did a similar thing—he went into a—I think it was a Hindu temple in Wisconsin, and killed a bunch of people about three years ago—sometimes it’s those very kind of guys that are the most lethal, which is why Tommy Mair and people like him represent such a huge challenge to MI5 and the FBI and other law enforcement, because they can be dormant for many years. They can be on the radar, then they go off the radar. They’re the kind that—you know, they’re not the kind that—Tommy Mair was not the kind of guy you’d pick out to start a fight in a bar. He was not like a tough kind of guy. He didn’t pose as a tough guy. He just basically was a nondescript kind of guy. And I thought, you know, obviously he is not—his hatred has not changed. He just found an outlet for it, and he finally decided to try to go out in a blaze of glory. And that’s—that was my reaction.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, Todd Blodgett, you did this undercover work for the FBI, but yet you’ve also been public since then about your activities. Are there any concerns on your part of your own personal safety as a result of the work you did to uncover the activities of some of thes white supremacist groups?

TODD BLODGETT: There are—I do have some concerns. I live in Texas, as well as in Iowa. And I’ve had strangers walk up to me in bars in Texas and call me—I won’t say this name, these words, on the air, but, you know, they’ll use the N-word, they’ll use derogatory names for Jewish people, and they’ll say I’m a blankety-blank lover or a race traitor, that kind of thing. So there’s always that concern. But I will say this—I want to get this out: I have a concealed-carry permit that’s good in 37 states, and I can legally—I am legally armed. I’m armed right now. And so, if they want to try to make a fight with me, they might take me out, but I’m going to take them with me.

AMY GOODMAN: The presidential election right now, the support that Donald Trump has gotten from, for example, David Duke—right?—the former Klan leader—

TODD BLODGETT: Right.

AMY GOODMAN: —white supremacist, your thoughts on white supremacists in this country, Klan support of Donald Trump?

TODD BLODGETT: I think it’s very tragic. I mean, anyone has a right to support who they want to. But I worked for Reagan for many years, and when Reagan was endorsed by the KKK in the fall of 1980, his response was a great response. He said, "Look, just because they like my philosophy doesn’t mean I buy theirs." Trump kind of stumbled over that thing. I don’t think Donald Trump is a white supremacist, but I’m very disturbed by the fact that he’s got support from them, and I’m also disturbed by the comment he made about the judge. I can’t think of—Judge Curiel, I think his name is. But he made a—he made a stupid reference to the fact that he’s of Hispanic descent, which is totally irrelevant to the case. I worked with David Duke. I monitored him for the FBI. I’ve done—you know, I monitored all these people. They’re, without exception, a bunch of sociopaths. They’re just bad people. And most of their supporters tend to be bad people, too. So I don’t want to see that kind of thing being any part of the Republican Party. I’m still a Republican. I was for Jeb Bush for the nomination; before that, for Dr. Carson. But I don’t want to see that part—I want this flushed out of the party.

AMY GOODMAN: What is it about Donald Trump, you think, that attracts white supremacists, neo-Nazis?

TODD BLODGETT: I think it is because they recognize, in their world, to their way of thinking, demographics are destiny. That was one thing that William P

Chicago Cop Rightly Fired After Woman's Suicide

http://www.courthousenews.com/2016/06/2 ... uicide.htm

A Chicago police officer was properly fired for spending time with a domestic-violence victim who later picked up his gun and killed herself, the Illinois Appellate Court ruled.
Sgt. Steven Lesner responded to a domestic violence call from Catherine Weiland and her boyfriend at North Side restaurant in February 2009.
Two other officers responded to the call and removed the boyfriend. Lesner then offered Weiland a ride home in his police car.
On the way back to her apartment, Weiland asked Lesner to stop and buy her a bottle of wine. He agreed.
Lesner stayed at Weiland's apartment for 40 minutes, talking to her brother and father, who lived in separate units in the same building.
He agreed to drive them back to the restaurant to retrieve Weiland's car. Lesner also gave Weiland a card with his personal cell-phone number.
She used it to call Lesner and invite him back to her apartment for a drink after his shift. Lesner put his duty firearm in his locker and strapped his auxiliary firearm to his ankle.
Lesner bought beer for himself and more wine for Weiland before returning to her apartment. While they were watching television, Lesner had his feet on a table and took off the gun when he thought Weiland was not looking, because "it looks kind of stupid."
When Lesner went to use the restroom, Weiland picked up his gun and shot herself in the head.
     An investigation revealed

Exclusive: Jack Cashill seeks more testimony about downing of plane over Long Island

JACK CASHILL

This July marks the 20th anniversary of the shoot down of TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island. As such, it may well represent the last opportunity for those with inside information to come forward.

In the last week or two, as I have started to promote my new book on this subject, “TWA 800: The Crash, the Cover-Up, and the Conspiracy,” I have heard from a number of people with stories to tell. If you know something or know someone who does, please email me at jcashill@aol.com.

Sam, the air safety chairman for the Airline Pilot’s Association, arrived at the crash scene on the first day. “From the get-go the FBI was all over us, no notebooks, no cameras, no nothing,” said Sam.

This was unprecedented. Sam worked through the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB was supposed to be in charge of the investigation. Under orders from the Clinton Justice Department, the FBI seized control on Day 1.

Sam soon identified a part of the plane that showed obvious damage from an external explosion. He had it tested it for explosive residue on site. It tested positive.

FBI Contradicts Account Of ‘Miguel’ — Mateen’s Alleged Gay Lover

June 24, 2016 at 3:53pm

In the initial aftermath of the Orlando attack earlier this month, all
that was known was that a 29 year-old man, Omar Mateen, killed 49
people at gay nightclub and had been heard pledging allegiance to
ISIS.

Rumors soon surfaced that Mateen himself was gay, with a man even
coming forward claiming to be Mateen’s gay lover. Univision, who
brought the report, kept the identity of the man private and gave him
the name “Miguel” as an alias. Miguel publicly denounced the notion
that the shooting was an act of terrorism. Instead, he said that it
was a display of revenge following Mateen’s discovery that he was HIV
positive.

Despite these recent claims, so far the FBI has not found any evidence
to support this notion.

After several men also surfaced last week claiming they had been
contacted by Mateen via various gay dating apps, the FBI began a full
investigation into the matter. Many of the men who came forward also
claimed that Mateen had been a regular at the Pulse nightclub where
the shooting took place.

However, according to a senior federal law enforcement source, after
multiple interviews and reviewing evidence collected from Mateen’s
phone, the FBI has not found any concrete evidence

Bradley Commissioner Dan Rawls Says He Has Turned Over Allegations Of
Illegal Conduct Against Sheriff Eric Watson
Friday, June 24, 2016
Bradley County Commissioner Dan Rawls said he has turned over to
authorities what he said are multiple instances of alleged illegal
conduct by Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson.

He said the gave the evidence to District Attorney Steve Crump, the
TBI and the FBI.

Commissioner Rawls said, "And there is still more there. The more you
uncover the more you become appalled."

He said some of the allegations include the disposition of a sheriff's
van, the activity of his wife, Tenille, as a bonding agent, the
sheriff's alleged involvement with a woman who has had several
arrests, and alleged threats toward him made by the sheriff.

Commissioner Rawls said he began to become suspicious after examining
some transactions in the sheriff's department that came before the
commission finance committee.

He said the van that was sold was purchased in excess of $130,000. He
said various high-tech equipment was added to it. He said it was sold
for $20,000 to a bounty hunter in Nashville identified as a friend of
the sheriff's.

Commissioner Rawls said, "At first there was no bill of sale. Then one
was produced that did not have a date on it."

He said local bonding officials were told that Ms. Watson would not be
operating in Bradley County, but in adjacent counties. He said, "That
did not turn out to be the case."

The commissioner said he checked the records and found that for three
recent months Ms. Watson wrote more bonds than several agents did for
the next highest firm. He said, "People at the jail have to be
steering cases her way."
Commissioner Rawls said, "For the sheriff's wife to be in the bonding
business is a flagrant conflict of interest."

Regarding the one who he said was closely tied to the sheriff, he said
she was placed in jail on no bond. Then, he said, she got out on a low
bond after a call from the sheriff's office saying she was working as
a confidential informant.

Commissioner Rawls said, "I was told by someone on the command staff
that she never was a confidential informant and never will be."

The commissioner said he was able to obtain over 100 messages between
Sheriff Watson and the woman. He said the communication included a
number of suggestive remarks.

He said the woman sent the sheriff a photo of herself without a shirt
and wearing a red bra.

He said one discussed them ta

In a live press conference that was obviously scripted, Comey confirmed that Hillary Clinton sent or received at least 110 emails that contained classified information, in blatant violation of U.S. law. This violation of federal law was described by Comey as “reckless” but not worthy of prosecution. “No charges are appropriate in this case,” he concluded. Yet it’s clear this decision was based on special consideration that applies only to politically connected power brokers like Hillary Clinton

Coastal Cities, Critical Infrastructure Unprepared to Face the Rising Tides of Climate Change
Civitas — the latin word for city and the root word for civilization. Civilization, in other words, is a collection of component cities. And, by extension, any major threat to a large number of cities is a threat to civilization itself. Such is the case with human-forced climate change.

*****

It’s a sad fact that many of the hundreds of coastal cities around the world are living on borrowed time. Current greenhouse gas levels — topping out near 408 parts per million CO2 (and 490 parts per million CO2e) this year — will need to fall in order to prevent 1-3 C of additional warming and 25 to 60 feet or more of sea level rise over the coming decades and centuries. And even if we somehow dialed atmospheric CO2 and CO2e levels back to 350 ppm, it’s likely that we’d still see seas eventually rise by 10-20 feet over the long term due to already destabilized glaciers in places like Greenland or West Antarctica.

But with fossil fuel burning continuing at near record levels globally, and with many corporations and political bodies around the world dragging feet on greenhouse gas emissions cuts, the level of heat-trapping carbon held aloft in our airs will continue to rise for some time. These vastly irresponsible actions will further heat the atmosphere and ocean — melting a greater share of the world’s land ice and forcing seas to ultimately rise even more. If CO2e exceeds a range of 550 to 650 parts per million — which could easily happen even under so-called moderate rates of fossil fuel burning before the middle of the 21st Century — then all the land ice on Earth will be placed under melt pressure. And that vast sum of ice melt represents about 220 feet of sea level rise long term so long as the greenhouse gas melt and heat pressure remains.

(Seas have been rising in concert with ocean warming and fossil fuel burning since the start of the 20th Century. At first, during the first half of the 20th Century, rates of rise were less than 1 mm per year. By the 1993 through 2016 period, sea level rise averaged 3.39 mm per year. And since 2011, the rate of rise appears to have steepened into the range of 4 to 6 milimeters per year. Image source: AVISO.)

Even more disturbing is the fact that in the geological past, glacial melt has not tended to process in a gradual, orderly fashi

FBI'S Blatant Malfeasence

Behind Decision Not to Charge Clinton

By Tom Fitton

http://ticklethewire.com/2016/07/11/fox-news/
There is the bipartisan pretense that the FBI is the only government agency in Washington that is above reproach. Yet, this is the agency that collaborated with Lois Lerner and the IRS in an effort to criminally prosecute opponents of Barack Obama. Then, unsurprisingly, this same FBI (and Justice Department) found nothing worth prosecuting in their own blatant malfeasance.

Again, this is the same FBI whose Keystone Cops approach to counter-terrorism failed to prevent eminently preventable terrorist acts ranging from the Boston Marathon bombing to the Orlando massacre. In fact, we now know that an FBI supervisor actually told one Florida police department investigating Omar Mateen, “We do

FBI JFK Assassination
see link for full story
http://jamesfetzer.blogspot.com/2016/07 ... trade.html

The people of the TSBD were likewise ultraconservative. Roy Truly, the building manager, strongly disapproved of Kennedy’s foreign policies and believed him to be a “race mixer.” [9] Gladys Cason, wife of the president of the TSBD, said on one occasion that someone ought to shoot President Kennedy. [10] Her husband Jack was active in the American Legion since 1945. As post commander, he was involved, or simpatico, with J. Edgar Hoover’s recruitment of Legionnaires as informants. By 1943, some 60,000 Legion members belonging to 11,000 posts around the country served as confidential informants. Among their tasks was safeguarding the security of defense plants, transportation facilities, and public utilities. [11]

In line with the FBI’s mission to spy on leftist groups was Joe Molina, who worked as
credit manager at the TSBD since 1947. Molina and FBI undercover agent Bill Lowery worked together to infiltrate the American GI Forum, a leftist organization. Working for the CIA was William Shelley, who was in the TSBD miscellaneous department. Billy Lovelady, truck driver for the TSBD, was involved in an illegal weapons deal when he was in the Air Force in Washington DC. [12] Joe Bergin, manager of the Scott Foresman office on the fourth floor of the TSBD, was secretly a Texas Ranger.

The link of the schoolbook business to the intelligence agencies is well-established. Working as law editor for Bobbs Merrill in Indianapolis since the late 1960s was CIA agent William Harvey, [13] who played an active part in the Kennedy assassination. On the third floor of the TSBD was McGraw-Hill. It was not only a publisher of schoolbooks, it was also was a contractor for the Foreign Technology Division, devoted to collecting data on Soviet aerospace technology. Professors and scholars engaged in this activity used as their cover the seemingly innocuous name of the schoolbook firm. [14] At 4640 Harry Hines Boulevard was the office of Van Nostrand. In September 1965 a Van Nostrand schoolbook salesman, Newcomb Mott, entered the Soviet Union without a visa by crossing the Norwegian border. Suspecting him of being a CIA agent, the Soviets arrested Mott and put him on trial for entering the country illegally. He was convicted and sentenced to a forced labor camp. Before he got there, he committed suicide, or was murdered, using a razor blade received in a gift package from the American Embassy. Mott’s entry into the Soviet Union by a little known and remote route parallels the way Lee Harvey Oswald entered the Soviet Union via Finland. [15]

When Oswald returned to the United States, his friend George de Mohrenschildt helped him get a job at a typesetting company called Jaggars Chiles Stovall at 522 Browder Street, where it had been since 1941. He worked as a cameraman from October 1962 to April 1963. Although most of his work was commercial, some of it consisted of top secret projects for the Navy Bureau Materiel and the Army Mapping Service.

At 703 and 707 Browder Street was the old LSBD. The close proximity of two companies, both engaged in anti-communist or anti-Soviet activities, suggests a common bond between them. If they worked in tandem in the plot to kill the president, then it was no coincidence that Oswald, the future patsy, started working for the typesetting company at the same time construction began on the new schoolbook depository on Harry Hines Boulevard.

Preparations for the hit in Dallas began as early as 1961, when steps were taken to remove a long-standing tenant from the 411 Elm Street building. Sexton Quality Foods, a wholesale grocery firm headquartered in Chicago, had been using the building as a warehouse since January 1, 1941. To induce the Sexton Company to vacate the premises, Trammell Crow contracted a construction company to build a single-story, 60,000-square-foot, masonry structure (suitable for forklifts), on four and half acres in the Brook Hollow Industrial District. When it was finished in October 1961, Crow leased it to Sexton (DMN 9-3-61). Sexton vacated the Elm Street building on November 14, 1961. The following year, perhaps in the fall of 1962, the TSBD began making extensive modifications, such as the addition of office suites to the third and fourth floors and installing a passenger elevator. These improvements delayed the opening of the building to the summer of 1963, about five to six months after the LSBD had already moved to Harry Hines Boulevard.

Climate Change is Pushing Lake Okeechobee’s Water Levels Higher — And that’s Bad News For Algae Blooms, Flood Risk
More powerful storms. Heavier extreme rainfall events. Storms with higher potential energy. These are the result of a human-forced warming of the Earth’s atmosphere. And South Florida finds itself sandwiched between heavier evaporation flows streaming off the Gulf of Mexico, a more volatilely stormy North Atlantic, and large rivers of moisture streaming in from the Southeast Pacific.

(Atmospheric water vapor levels over South Florida during late June of 2016. South Florida sits between numerous heavily laden atmospheric moisture flows. As human forced warming increases evaporation, these moisture flows expand, resulting in heavier rainfall potentials during storms over South Florida. This climate change dynamic is increasing over-topping flood risks for Lake Okeechobee even as the added heat and rainfall run-off enhances the potential for toxic algae blooms like the one now afflicting South Florida. Image source: Earth Nullschool).

And as these moisture-enhanced storms of climate change dump heavier and heavier rains over South Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, the choice appears to be one between flood risk or toxic algae blooms.

*****

Flood Risk Worsens With Climate Change

Lake Okeechobee sits at the heart of South Florida. Covering 730 square miles, the lake is bounded on the north, east, and west by farms. Run-off from these farms streams into the lake, feeding the growth of algae blooms. As the Earth’s atmosphere and ocean warmed due to human greenhouse gas emissions, rainfall events over South Florida have grown more intense. This trend increases

Full disclosure: After graduating from Harvard Law School in 2001, I practiced criminal law in multiple jurisdictions over the following seven years, representing more than 2,000 criminal defendants in all. While I supported and voted for Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primary, I’m aware that Sanders is likely to endorse Clinton next week and ― having voted for the Democrat in every election I’ve ever voted in ― I likewise plan to vote for Hillary Clinton if her major-party opponent is Donald Trump come November. So if your reaction to this article in any way depends on the theory that I’m something other than a lifelong Democrat who currently plans to vote for Hillary Clinton in the fall, please reconsider that position.

Having said the above, and speaking as a long-time criminal attorney, what I heard discussed on July 7th, 2016 during FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before Congress in no way resembles the criminal justice system I worked in as a public defender between 2000 and 2007. In representing more than 2,000 indigent defendants in multiple jurisdictions, neither the values nor practices I heard described by Director Comey were at all familiar to me. I feel compelled to speak out about this in part because Comey’s testimony before Congress coincides with the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile ― not to mention scores of other highly publicized shootings of unarmed black men by police officers ― and I have not yet seen anyone draw the conn

To Katch a Klansman: FBI Informant Behind Recent KKK Fliers in Raleigh

Fliers distributed in Raleigh and other North Carolina cities last weekend urging residents to join the Ku Klux Klan are part of an apparent nationwide recruiting drive for the white supremacist organization with one minor twist: the phone number and websites listed trace back to a Klan chapter whose leader is a reported FBI informant.

As reported by the Independent Weekly along with other local and national outlets, the fliers begged readers to "PLEASE JOIN BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE" and offered up a 24/7 national hotline, 336-432-0386 and two websites, kkkknights.com & loyalwhiteknights.com.

Per online phone directory whitepages.com, the 336 number has been linked to the Eden, North Carolina-based "klavern" known as the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan since 2014. One user on the site claimed the number had been attached to a Craigslist ad for a free television set.

The woman to whom the websites are registered, Amanda Barker (she has a YouTube Channel and is identified as the group's "Imperial Kommander") emailed the Daily Beast last week to confirm their

Half Of TSA's 30,000 Employees Accused Of Misconduct; Nearly A Third Multiple Times
from the too-big-to-fix dept
The TSA is a multibillion dollar agency with nearly zero redeemable qualities. It can only act in hindsight, does almost nothing to make traveling safer, and seemingly devotes most of its screening efforts to toddlers, cancer patients, and ensuring carry-on liquids do not exceed three ounces.
What it lacks in competency, it makes up in misconduct. Lines at security checkpoints have slowed to a crawl. Making it through the tedious, invasive process sometimes means inadvertently "donating" expensive electronics to sticky-fingered agents. The TSA's morale is generally on par with Congress' approval rates. And, when it's all said and done, the people hired to protect travelers just plain suck at their job.
Despite the Transportation Security Administration's ten-point action plan to reduce long lines at airports across the country, lengthy queues remain. Now, the TSA's summer may be getting even worse: According to a recent report from the House Homeland Security Commission entitled "Misconduct at TSA Threatens the Security of the Flying Public", nearly half of the TSA’s 60,000 employees have been cited for misconduct in recent years.
As Katherine LaGrave of the Conde Nast Traveler points out, the problem is only getting worse. Complaints are up 28% over the last three years, with larger airports averaging a complaint a week. Long lines may be

Parrish civil case with county settled for $200,000
Published 11:56am Wednesday, July 20, 2016

The civil lawsuit filed by Ronnie Aaron Parrish against Decatur County, four former deputies and the Board of Commissioners over an incident at Bikefest 2012 has been settled for $200,000.

After an altercation with Parrish, who was a Bikefest attendee, deputies filed reports that he hit an officer and resisted arrest. He was officially arrested three days later and found guilty in February 2013 of Obstruction of an Officer, fined $1,000 and sentenced to three years of probation.

Meanwhile, Parrish contacted the FBI and claimed he was beaten by deputies, which led to the four deputies being indicted with federal charges.

In June 2015, a two-week federal trial revealed a cover up had taken place, incident reports were altered by the deputies, who knowingly mislead FBI agents about their actions, and Parrish was deprived of a fair trial.

Written by Mike Greene, former NYPD Detective and former Orange County Sheriff candidate.
I conducted local level criminal investigations through high level national and international level investigations (terrorism, espionage, international abductions, crimes on the high seas, etc.).

Many of us saw the FBI Director’s speech yesterday. Like many of us, I was a bit pissed that, after Comey described a mountain of very serious wrong doing, his agency was not going to recommend prosecution of the case.
Like many of us, I smelled a rat so I conducted my own investigation.  The results of my investigation will  astound you and show a clear path to corruption here.
Here’s my step by step breakdown of this seemingly corrupt decision …..
1. Lynch was appointed as U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn, NY from 1999 to 2001. Who appointed her?  Then President Bill Clinton.
2. Lynch resigned in 2001 to join the law firm Hogan & Hartson. This is the same law firm that represented the company MXLogic. MXLogic was the company Hillary first used to set up her private email server and account. Executives from this law firm have also donated to the Clintons.

3. From 2003 to 2005 Lynch served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. The Federal Reserve Bank is actually a privately owned corporation, comprised of numerous banks. Several of these banks and or their executives have donated to the Clinton‘s political campaigns and to the Clinton Foundation.
4. In 2010, President Obama re-appointed Lynch as U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn. In 2015, Obama then appointed her as head U.S. Attorney for the nation.

5. A few days ago, as we all know, Lynch met with Bill Clinton, privately, on her private government jet. This meeting was a few days before the FBI interviewed Hillary and a few days before today’s announcement.

6. After this meeting, Lynch said something that no U.S. Attorney has ever said. She first apologized and said she should not have met him (obviously an apology based on her being caught, not apologizing for the actual action). She then states something U.S. Attorneys do not state. She stated her office will be guided by whatever recommendation the FBI gives them. Why was this statement ridiculous? She is the head of the U.S. Justice Department. The FBI is a sub unit of the DOJ. She is the top boss, not Comey and not the FBI. Heroffice decides to prosecute or not, NOT the FBI.

7. In 1996 Comey was appointed as a Senate Committee Investigator/Counsel to investigate the Clintons in Whitewater. His findings concluded no wrongdoing with the Clintons.

8.  Comey and Lynch met back in the early 2000’s.

Comey was appointed by Bush as the U.S. Attorney for Manhattan.
9. In 2002, Bush appointed Comey as Deputy U.S. Attorney and he was tasked with investigating Bill Clinton‘s mass pardons as he left office. Comey concluded that Clinton had done nothing wrong.

10.  Comey went into private practice and in 2005.

11. In 2014, Obama appointed Comey as FBI Director. Lynch is Comey’s boss, as she is the head of the parent agency, DOJ. Lynch is the chief law enforcement officer of our nation. Comey holds the number two position in the sub agency, the FBI.

At the end of the day, how do we have Lynch, previously appointed by Bill Clinton, and formerly an employee of the law firm that is connected to Hillary‘s email scandal, in charge of the investigation intoHillary‘s email scandal, with the lead investigative agency led by a man who twice investigated the Clintons and both times found them not guilty of wrong doing, also appointed by the current U.S. President, who appointed Lynch, who is Comey’s boss??????  And Comey and Lynch have known each other for decades as well.

How was this investigation to have ever been legitimate????”  ~Mike Greene

The Man Who Invented Miller Lite Was Suspected Of Being A Communist

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/07/the-m ... communist/

Light beer is as American as apple pie, and Miller Lite is one of America’s favourite light beers. But what if I told you that the marketing man behind the creation of the Miller Lite brand was investigated by the FBI for being a communist? That’s the startling revelation that has come to light based on newly released documents that I obtained today from the National Archives.

When George Weissman died in 2009, he was remembered for his years as an executive at America’s largest tobacco company: Philip Morris. An expert branding man, he not only helped define the image of the now-notorious Marlboro Man character but also helped invent Miller Lite — ushering in a new wave of light beer fanaticism to the United States.

The one thing that the obituaries didn’t mention? The FBI’s file on Weissman, which details his alleged associations with the Communist Party in the 1940s, both before and after he served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Portion of an internal FBI document from March 2, 1949 about future Philip Morris executive Geroge Weissman

The file details various friends and informants snitching on Weissman as being a Communist in the 1940s, as well as the letters he’d write to the headquarters of the Communist Party in New York.

Portion of an internal FBI document from August 13, 1948 about future Philip Morris executive George Weissman

The FBI also followed up in the 1970s when they investigated Weissman’s involvement with an organisation called Executives Move For Peace in Vietnam. It appears that the FBI considered protesting the war in Vietnam to be more dangerous than selling a product that killed tens of thousands of Americans every year.

Portion of George Weissman’s FBI Name Check file, dated October 9, 1973

last page of the file was produced.

That page notes that the FBI’s 1940s investigation into Weissman’s alleged Communist activities could not be independently established. It’s not entirely clear from the file why the Nixon administration was interested in Weissman, though it was later revealed that Weissman was on one of Nixon’s many political enemies lists.

The entire FBI file on George Weissman is below.

Keith Farrell: Described by Whitehurst as a former student in explosives who called him from the Oklahoma City laboratory to request his assistance and advice. Page 7. Whitehurst told him to get the civilians out of the blast area to avoid secondary bombs which have been known to be placed at such scenes to increase the carnage. According to Whitehurst, no one had even thought of that eventuality, not Martz, Burmeister or Tom Thurman. Whitehurst said they followed his advice (which may account for the evacuation of rescue personnel after the bombing). Id.

OBITUARIES

Joseph T. Nolan
Posted Jul 28, 2016 at 2:01 AM

NEWTON - Father Joseph T. Nolan, a beloved priest and long-time teacher at Boston College, died on Monday, July 25, 2016, at his home in Newton, Massachusetts.
Father Nolan was a classic example of what the Catholic Church calls "a delayed vocation," having come to the priesthood after three years with the FBI, two years as an officer in the Navy, and pausing to pick up a graduate degree before finally heading to the seminary.
At his golden jubilee (the 50th anniversary of his entering the priesthood) in 2003, he faced the question of why he had shifted vocations. He said, "It was easier to get confessions." Many came to know Father Nolan during the three decades he preached at St. Ignatius Church on the Boston College campus. Around the country, many more knew him from seminars and courses he gave on liturgy and preaching, and from the newsletter he edited, “Good News.”
Father Nolan was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, son of James L. and Lillian C. Nolan. He was educated in Winthrop public schools, and graduated from Boston College in 1942, where he won the coveted Fulton Medal for debating and was proud to have his name inscribed on a wall in the college’s iconic tower building, Gasson Hall.
Upon graduating from BC, Father Nolan went to work for the FBI doing fingerprint analysis, and was eventually assigned as a special agent to Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1944, the FBI "invited" many of its personnel to join the armed forces, and Father Nolan became an ensign in the Naval Reserve, sworn in at the FBI office. After boot camp, he was sent to communications school at Harvard, then overseas duty in Recife, Brazil, and Manila in the Philippines.
In his autobiography, Liturgical Journeys, he tells movingly of a chance meeting with his brother, James, a radio operator, on Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). His other brother, John, was in the 8th Air Force in the European theatre. After the war, Father Nolan returned to the FBI and was assigned to the New York office. He said later that New York enabled him to get in touch again with Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker, and to date one of the workers

Defense Makes New Allegations Against Former Congressman Gary Condit in Chandra Levy Case

http://abcnews.go.com/US/defense-makes- ... d=39300558

WATCH New Allegations Ahead of Retrial in Chandra Levy Case
New allegations made by the defense in a new trial for the man accused of murdering Chandra Levy are raising questions about the disappearance of Levy, the FBI intern who vanished in May 2001 and whose remains were found the next year in Washington, D.C.,'s Rock Creek Park.

The Washington murder case ended the career of former California Congressman Gary Condit, who was at one point the primary suspect before police ruled him out despite his romantic link to Levy. Condit's alleged secret sex life is now in the spotlight after defense attorneys for Ingmar Guandique, the man sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing 24-year-old Levy, filed a new motion last week.

Guandique, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, was convicted by a jury in 2010 based on a jailhouse confession to other inmates. However, his conviction was later set aside. Last year, prosecutors dropped their opposition to Guandique's attorneys' request for a new trial.

Guandique is facing a new trial this fall.

The new motion filed by Guandique's lawyers claims that "aggressive sex involving bondage" may have killed Levy.

When Levy's body was found in 2002 in Rock Creek Park, investigators found a pair of knotted tights nearby. Defense attorneys claim Condit may have used the tights to restrain Levy during a rough sex act gone wrong.

Condit's DNA was found at Levy's home, providing proof of the affair, but authorities ruled Condit out as a suspect after it came to light that a predator -- allegedly Guandique -- had been attacking female joggers in the park.

Condit was once a powerful Democrat on the U.S. House Intelligence Committee. He famously broke with his party over the Monica Lewinsky scandal, demanding that then-president Bill Clinton "come clean" about his affair with Lewinsky.

Condit has denied he had anything to do with Levy's murder. He returned to private life after losing to a primary challenger in 2002.

Levy's parents, Robert and Susan Levy, are split over the defense's efforts to reevaluate Condit's possible role in their daughter's murder.

"I think Condit was fooling around and doing that but it doesn't prove he was the murderer," Robert Levy told ABC News.

Susan Levy added, "Young women can be caught up in the web of predators or powerful people and you don't know what happened to them."

The defense motion claims that Condit had "a powerful motive to either kill and/or cover-up the circumstances of her death, whether her death was intentional or accidental."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah Sines, prosecuting the Guandique case a second time, in court called the new motion, "a sensational, salacious and an effort to taint the jury pool."

Condit's civil attorney, L. Lin Wood, described the defense strategy from Guandique's lawyers as "reprehensible."

"Mr. Condit was long ago cleared by law enforcement in connection with her murder

Prosecutors drop murder charge against Chandra Levy’s accused killer

Updated: 3:18 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016
D.C. prosecutors have dropped murder charges against Ingmar Guandique, the man previously convicted of the 2001 murder of Chandra Levy.
Citing “recent unforeseen developments” in their bid to retry Guandique, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District announced Thursday that it had moved to dismiss the case.
Without disclosing the specifics of the recent developments, prosecutors issued a statement Thursday that said, “The Office has concluded that it can no longer prove the murder case against Mr. Guandique beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Guandique was convicted of Levy’s murder in 2010 and sentenced to 60 years in prison. The D.C. Public Defenders Service pursued a new trial for the illegal Salvadoran immigrant after prosecutors disclosed in 2013 that a key witness in the case, jailhouse informant Armando Morales, had lied when he testified he had never previously provided information to law enforcement in other criminal cases.
Morales testified during the 2010 trial that Guandique had admitted

2016 election decides who controls the drug trade
Posted on July 20, 2016 by Daniel Hopsicker
In the Presidential Election of 2016, Republican and Democratic insiders are wrestling like two dogs over a bone over who controls the illegal drug trade.

To the victor go the spoils. Who wins the election wins control of America’s vast drug bazaar, largest in the world, whose proceeds prop up lucky bankers and politicians lapping at the trough of  the biggest richest slush fund in the history of the world.

It’s the smart play

It’s the biggest business in the world, and the No. 1 industry on the face of the planet, in terms of foreign trade. And if you didn’t know that about the illegal drug trade, then the vast amounts spent on propaganda and disinformation every year in the so-called “War on Drugs” is working.

The first industry to globalize vertically was the illegal drug business. It’s an open question whether drug

FTR #115 In October of 1998, Mr. Emory interviewed attorney Ray Kohlman in a conference call with former LAPD narcotics detective Mike Ruppert on the subject of the Tyree suit. Mr. Kohlman is representing former Special Forces soldier Bill Tyree in his lawsuit against George Bush, the CIA, Oliver North and Bill Clinton, among others. The discussion centers on the structure of the lawsuit itself, the current status of the suit (as of the Fall of 1998) and the possible impact of the publication of Volume Two of the CIA Inspector General's report on the agency's involvement in the drug trade. The main element connecting the disparate aspects of the lawsuit is the remarkable career of Albert Vincent Carone, who worked variously for the New York Police Department, the U.S. Army, the CIA and the Mafia. One item of information of particular interest (and not included in the previous broadcasts on the subject) is the allegation Carone made (during a deathbed confession) that he had paid money to Ruth Paine, one of the people who shepherded Lee Harvey Oswald around in the Dallas area. Carone also alleged that he paid money to Jack Ruby on 11/21/63 and that he was on a rooftop on a building at Love Field in Dallas with a rifle in order to kill President Kennedy on 11/22/63 but was unable to get a clear shot.

This is a press release from one of 13 conferences we organized
in New England looking at crimes committed by FBI agents.
It was held at Bates College for 11 years.

By Bates News. Published on January 5, 2000

The 11th annual Maine Conference Investigating Crimes Committed by the FBI by will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

The conference, sponsored by Maine Citizens to Defend the Bill of Rights and the New World Coalition, a student organization at Bates, features a talk by Raymond Kohlman, an attorney who in December 1999 successfully represented the family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a lawsuit claiming the civil rights leader was the victim of a vast murder conspiracy, not a lone assassin. The King family had sued Loyd Jowers, a retired businessman who claimed six years ago that he paid someone other than James Earl Ray to kill King in Memphis, Tenn., in 1968. Kohlman claimed the FBI, CIA, the Mafia and the U.S. military were involved in the assassination.

The conference also features a talk by Hoppy Heidelberg, a member of the Oklahoma City bombing grand jury who believes the FBI was involved in the destruction of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Heidelberg, a Reform Party gubernatorial candidate in Oklahoma, also is a member of Oklahomans for Truth, a group that recently took depositions from an FBI informant who testified to the FBI’s involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing.

FBI RELEASES REDACTED INFORMANT MANUALS IN RESPONSE TO FOIA

Documents obtained by Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue reveal new details about the FBI's rules of conduct for informants.

The FBI released 147 pages of heavily redacted manuals and policies related to the use of informants, in response to a FOIA request by Trentadue, who is engaged in a years-long lawsuit with the FBI over documents related to the Oklahoma City bombing.

Read the documents here

The documents pertain to unspecified training for "confidential human sources," including chain of command, dispute resolutions and other topics. The vast majority of direct guidance to informants is redacted, including even chapter headings.

Trentadue filed a related complaint alleging that the FBI has engaged in a practice of using informants within the news media to receive advance notice of potentially unfavorable stories.

As an exhibit in that complaint, Trentadue submitted an FBI FD-302 record

The case of the vanishing pandemic: Deadly bird flu flies the coop in the US/ Ars Technica
Remember when we kept on hearing that the next big disaster was going to be avian (bird) flu?  Well, bird flu petered out and instead of jumping to humans jumped into a black hole.  The lack of flu vaccinations for farmed chickens and ducks in North America may be key.  The following excerpts come from Ars Technica :

The case of the vanishing pandemic: Deadly bird flu flies the coop in the US

Scientists puzzled by disappearance, but think lack of vaccination may be key.

In November of 2014, a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu derived from Eurasia called H5N2 popped up in North America—in a Canadian turkey farm east of Vancouver, to be exact. From there, the virus quickly spread and mutated into new varieties, including H5N1, fanning fears it would vault to humans and cause a deadly pandemic. By March of 2015, it and its kin had swooped into 15 US states, causing 248 outbreaks

Murdered DNC Staffer Seth Rich May Have Been Wikileaks Source
DNC staffer Seth Rich inexplicably was murdered three weeks ago in Washington, D.C., and speculation swirls that he was the Wikileaks source for the published emails who has "paid the ultimate price for exposing Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC's crusade against Bernie Sanders" as reported by Heat Street: "the theory is apparently based on Julian Assange's recent ITV appearance, where he scoffed at the idea that Russian hackers could be responsible for the data dump, and said that 'anyone' within the Democrats' organization could easily have sent Wikileaks the offending messages."

As a quick reminder, TWA Flight 800 blew up off the coast of Long Island on July 17, 1996. A few weeks ago, I received an email from a fellow that, in a fairer world, would have been newsworthy in itself. Joe Johnson worked with the FBI missile team on the investigation as an industry partner. He concluded his initial email with the compelling line, “It would be better if we had a chat on the phone. I can prove that it was a missile.”
In the course of our subsequent conversations, Johnson laid out the evidence to support a missile strike: the motion correction for small guidance errors, the smooth turn toward the target at intercept, the resistance of Jet A fuel to a spark, and for Johnson, most significantly, the radar data that showed “debris exiting the aircraft at a supersonic velocity.” In the excellent 2103 documentary, TWA Flight 800, physicist Tom Stalcup considered that radar data “the smoking gun.”
Johnson also added a bit of information that may prove more valuable in the long run, that is the likely identity of the FBI agent who boldly resisted the CIA’s attempt to corrupt the investigation. In my book, I called this otherwise anonymous missile team member “Lewis Erskine” after the character Efrem Zimbalist Jr. played on the hit TV show, The F.B.I.
Johnson worked directly with a member of the FBI missile team named Steve Bongardt and vouched for his integrity. At the time of the confrontation with the CIA in April 1997 the missile team had only two members. Based on his future performance, Bongardt, a former U.S. Navy aviator and Naval Academy grad, would seem the more likely of the two to have defied the CIA analysts. As Bongardt says of himself on his LinkedIn page, “His efforts to fight the FBI and CIA bureaucracy in the days leading up to 9/11, in order to pursue one of the 9/11 hijackers, has been documented in the public media.”
Bongardt does not overstate his role. In 2006, the year after Bongardt stepped down from the FBI, noted author Lawrence Wright wrote an extensive piece in the New Yorker highlighting Bongardt’s exploits subtitled “Did the C.I.A. stop an F.B.I. detective from preventing 9/11?”
In the summer of 2001, Bongardt became aware that known terrorist Khaled al-Mihdhar was in the United States. Citing the “wall” that allegedly prevented intelligence gatherers from cooperating with criminal investigators, FBI headquarters informed Bongardt that none of its

Ellicott City Flood — 1,000 Year Event Looks a Lot Like One of the Rain Bombs of Climate Change
We live in a strange new world, one in which the familiar is all mixed up with the radically altered. Such was the case this weekend when a weather pattern that was pretty normal for summer spawned a single thunderstorm that produced a once-in-a-thousand-years flood event in Ellicott City.

Normal Weekend, Typical Weather Pattern, Abnormal Conditions

On Saturday, my wife and I readied to trek out to Shenandoah National Park for a happily-anticipated summer camping trip. As we headed out the door, the weather pattern looked mostly normal for summer, if a little stormy. A high-pressure system out over the ocean was pulling in moisture off its waters and drawing warm air up from the south. A low over western Pennsylvania and a warm frontal boundary over Maryland created instability in a big zone of convection from Northern Virginia on through to Connecticut. Overall, it was a pretty typical pattern that would probably have produced some moderate-to-strong late-afternoon thunderstorms back in the 20th century. Back then, it was far less likely that a similar pattern would have produced a 1,000 year flood event.

(Extremely warm sea surface temperatures on the weekend of July 30-31 helped to fuel the record rainfall event over Elicott City, Maryland. Sea surface temperature anomaly map provided by: Earth Nullschool.)

However, conditions were not normal, not the same as they were back during a time when human fossil-fuel emissions hadn’t forced the world to warm by 1.2 degrees Celsius above 1880s levels. In the new world in 2016, the ocean high-pressure system was circulating over record warm sea surfaces that were 3-5 C hotter than late 20th-century averages. And because of this, the ocean was bleeding off a whole hell of a lot more moisture than it typically would. Any storms that fired in that very wet air mass would, as a result, tend to pump out a lot more rain than is typical.

A Wet Atmosphere Crackling with Unusual Energy

As my wife and I made our way toward the Blue Ridge Mountains and down Interstate 66 and Route 211, large, energetic cumulus clouds sprouted all around us. Wafted in the hot, unstable air, many tops punched up through the troposphere, spreading out into the characteristic anvil shapes of thunderstorms.

Light streamed down between these big, wet beasts. For a while, as we made our way up to the campground, set up our gear, and took a hike along a local rock scramble, we were fortunate — able to enjoy our day despite the loud rumbles and roars of thunder echoing up from the valleys or off the nearby mountainsides in the steamy, moisture-choked air.

(A massive amount of atmospheric moisture fueled powerful thunderstorms on Saturday, July 30 from the Appalachians of northwestern Virginia to the Baltimore City region. One of these storms dumped more than 4.5 inches of rain on Ellicott City, Maryland Saturday in just one hour. Image source: Terp Weather.)

At about 3,000 feet in elevation, these conditions were a bit odd for Shenandoah National Park which typically experiences milder weather. Temperatures were around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (about 5-6 F hotter than average), and the level of atmospheric moist

Islamophobic workplace intimidation figures into the background of another mass shooter conveniently painted as a jihadist.

August 1, 2016

The ongoing intrigue surrounding Omar Mateen and his massacre of 47 patrons of the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida was drowned out by the political circus of two party conventions this month. The personal details about Mateen, from his vicious abuse of his first wife to credible accounts of a secret gay life to the reports of his mental instability and the autopsy results confirming him as a heavy abuser of steroids, have been forgotten or apparently suppressed by the FBI. Taken together, these elements of Mateen's person profile directly contradicted the popular portrayal of the mass killer as an Islamic extremist acting in the name of ISIS. Unsurprisingly, they have fallen down the Orwellian memory hole.

As the facts that could have interrupted the official narrative fell by the wayside, Congress and state legislatures exploited the tragedy to push for an expansion of undemocratic databases of “terror” suspects and the discriminatory no-fly list. As Sarah Lazare reported for AlterNet, police departments across the country have been leveraging the attack to lobby for expanded arsenals of military gear. At both Republican and Democratic conventions, Orlando has been invoked to summon fears

The top overtime earners at the NYPD aren’t patrolling the streets — they’re fixing the pipes and tending the thermostats.

Of the 20 NYPD employees who pocketed the most overtime during the 2016 fiscal year, only three are cops, payroll records show. The rest are civilian tradesmen — including engineers, steamfitters, carpenters and plumbers.

The biggest overtime paycheck went to Christopher Millevoi, a stationary engineer for the department who brought home $84,435.

Millevoi, who has worked for the NYPD for five years, logged 7651/2 extra hours in the year that ended June 30, the records show.

NYCHA plumber racks up $228G in overtime
With his regular salary and miscellaneous other pay, he made $295,419 — beating Police Commissioner Bill Bratton’s $217,442 salary.

Even though cops didn’t dominate the list, the NYPD blew past the $513 million cap on uniformed overtime that Mayor de Blasio and the City Council promised to impose when they struck a deal to hire 1,300 more officers.

Instead, the department doled out $573.6 million in overtime to uniformed members, according to the Independent Budget Office. That’s down from $610.6 million the year before, but well above the “hard cap” officials had pledged to enforce.

Total NYPD overtime costs for both cops and civilians jumped to $716.9 million in 2016, documents show — up from $704.1 million the previous year.
