SF's top cops differ on local control

Our April 26 cover story detailed the subservient stance Gascon has taken to the FBI.

The announcement by Sheriff Michael Hennessey that he won't honor federal deportation holds for undocumented prisoners accused of low-level crimes is a great illustration of local control – which is the reason why we elect our sheriff and district attorney – but it is a concept that District Attorney George Gascon doesn't seem to understand.

As the Guardian recently reported in a cover story by Sarah Phelan, Gascon ignored local control, civilian police oversight, and even standing police general orders as police chief by taking a highly deferential stance with the FBI and its domestic spying operations. Then, in a Chronicle op-ed on the death penalty last weekend, Gascon went even further in declaring himself to be merely a minion of higher government authorities.

Gay LAPD officer wins $1 million in retaliation lawsuit
Sgt. Ronald Crump sued the city alleging supervisor made derogatory remarks about his homosexuality

Los Angeles Times

LOS ANGELES - A jury on Thursday awarded $1.1 million to a Los Angeles police sergeant and media relations spokesman who said he had been harassed and suffered retaliation after complaining that a supervisor mistreated him because he is gay.

Sgt. Ronald Crump sued the city last year, alleging that his direct supervisor at the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Section - Lt. John Romero - made derogatory remarks about his homosexuality. Romero, who has since been promoted to captain, allegedly described him as "the new Ruby minus the heels," in reference to the woman he replaced in the unit.

Ex-sheriff's deputy guilty of child endangerment

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

(05-23) 16:51 PDT MARTINEZ --

A former Alameda County sheriff's deputy who had been accused of child molestation pleaded guilty Monday to child endangerment as part of a deal with prosecutors, authorities said.

Michael Bareno, 43, of San Ramon was sentenced by Judge Brian Haynes of Contra Costa County Superior Court to a year in jail and five years of probation. With credit for time served, Bareno could be released in about a month, said his attorney, Patrick Clancy.

San Ramon police arrested Bareno in November on suspicion of molesting three children. Prosecutors originally charged him with 10 counts of molestation, alleging that he abused a girl and two boys between 2005 and 2009 while off duty.

LULAC Asks FBI to Investigate Arlington Police
By Susy Solis
| Tuesday, May 31, 2011 | Updated 8:03 PM CDT

A Hispanic civil rights organization is asking the FBI to investigate the Arlington Police Department's handing of the slaying of a woman who was allegedly threatened by a police officer.

Evelia Villa Valencia, a mother of four, had filed a complaint against an Arlington police officer who she said threatened her last year.

Cassandra Gandra, who spoke on behalf of Valencia's attorney, Domingo Garcia, said the officer asked her disrobe in front of another officer in August 2010 and then threatened to retaliate if she told anyone about it.
