On researching Larry O'Hara a bit further, I stumbled upon this article from the year 2000:

Darker shades of green

Derek Wall traces the thread of ecofascism through the Green movement's history
August 2000

Paradoxically, while Greens argue for social justice and other left themes, environmentalism is often linked to the right. Hitler believed in a politics of hatred ordained by iron 'laws of nature'. Former Green Party speaker David Icke advocates a convoluted anti-semitic conspiracy arguing 'that a Jewish clique' caused the Russian Revolution, two world wars and now runs the world. US Earth First!er Chris Manes praised the Ethiopian famine and AIDS for reducing population. In the 1930s, the grandfather of post-modernism, Heidegger, attacked the alienation of industrial society and supported the Nazis as an antidote.

Far-right attempts to influence the British Green movement take three forms. Firstly, an authoritarian strain in the environmental movement has proclaimed the need for a centralised and strongly 'eco'-policed state, since the publication of Garrett Hardin's 1968 essay 'The Tragedy of the Commons'. Immigration, seen as threatening the ecological carrying capacity of a country, should cease. Population must be cut, by coercion if necessary. Social issues such as homelessness and poverty are seen as a distraction from the essential job of tackling the environmental crisis. In Britain, this strain dominant in the environmental movement of the early 1970s has waned considerably. It is represented by the Campaign for Real Ecology and eco groups disillusioned with the Green Party, with an ideology rooted in the pessimistic conservatism of Malthus. Far from overtly racist, despite some frankly repellent views - neither can this conservative environmentalism be seen as a fascist movement - it is clearly positioned on the statist right.

Its main ideologue, Sandy Irvine, a former International Socialist organiser, criticises those who in ecological destruction from individuals to wider social forces such as the multinationals and financial institutions. Ecological salvation is rooted in personal lifestyle choice. Empowerment (a buzz word of radical greens) is part of the problem. He even condemns the fact that 'women working at night are glad to see lights wastefully left on in empty corridors, simply because they feel safer.' [Irvine 1996]

Secondly, in contrast with the Malthusians are groups with neo-Nazi pedigree who claim to advocate 'social justice' and decentralization. In the 1980s, the National Front's Joe Pearce described 'Social Justice, Ecology and Racial Purity' as the three pillars of 'nationalism'. Ruralism, spiritual values, social credit and even animal rights are themes that both appeal to greens but are also given a far-right spin by these groups. Social Credit is a 1930s theory devised by anti-semite Major Douglas, which advocates community take-over of banks, that places the blame for ecological destruction on the banking system rather than capitalism/industrialism. And from here it is a short step to the NF's shrilling about a global Jewish banking conspiracy and 'Alien Bankers Destroying British Countryside' (see Nationalism Today, March 1980). Their espousal of animal rights focuses on ritual slaughter, with the right forgetting that kosher and halal practices are intended to reduce the suffering of animals.

The Naalso advocates of decentralisation. The most sophisticated group, Trans-Europa, publishes Perspectives, a cultural magazine advocating a Europe of the regions. The slogan 'Europe of a Hundred Flags' sounds appealing but hides the racial separatism assumed in Fascist decentralization. A model for these variants of the far right is contemporary Croatia. The small-scale racial state is utilised to challenge internationalism and the formation of 'One World' government. Richard Hunt - former editor of Green Anarchist, who regularly publishes material from Perspectives, Patrick Harrington and others on the far right - speaks of the 'unspoken, illegal, iron law "Our side, right or wrong". This loyalty to the family, then to the group - the clan - the nation, is the glue which holds the small community together' (in Alternative Green no.2).

Finally, we have those like David Icke who explicitly advocate the anti-semitic conspiracy. The far right have long argued for the existence of a Jewish-Masonic conspiracy, which manipulates the world. For example, funding the Russian Revolution and, confusingly, Hitler's rise to power. The conspiracy provides an explanatory framework to describe the origins of almost any popular fear, from progressive concerns to irrational prejudice. Icke now argues that environmental problems have been manufactured by the conspirators as yet another excuse to introduce 'Onwhich is far younger, larger and socially active, than any that the likes of John Tyndall or other far-right leaders are likely to attract.

Eco-fascism also has a lengthy lineage in Britain. The Soil Association, Britain's organic lobbyists, counted amongst their earliest members Jorian Jenks, former agriculture advisor to the British Union of Fascists. AK Chesterton, first Chairman of the National Front, was closely linked to far-right environmentalism of the 1930s. His uncle GK, Catholic apologist and purveyor of the Father Brown stories, invented the ideology of Distributism with Hillaire Belloc. Distributism, proclaiming the principle of 'three acres and a cow', seen as a 'third way' between capitalism and communism, drifted into the anti-semitic sphere before becoming the inspiration behind the modern remnants of the Front. Issues of Distributist newsletters in the 1950s advertised support for car free cities, decentralisation, the racist League of British Loyalists and Rudolf Hess.

To an extent all of this is unsurprising. The far right in Britain have tried to gain legitimacy by appealing to green sentiments, while ignoring manifestations of environmental concern that they find unpalatably egalitarian, anti-sexist and multi-cultural. Equally, opponents and especially the State have an interest in labelling greens as 'Nazis'. What better way, after all, of destroying a radical movement than by connecting surrogate body to suggest that infiltration by the far right has occurred and that names/addresses should be handed over for prudent disinfection?

Greens have, to their credit, fought back. Earth First! now prioritises anti-racist campaigning, proclaiming the slogan 'Monkey Wrench a Fascist' and work with the predominantly black radical ecology group MOVE. After research by veteran anti-fascist and state watcher Larry O'Hara, the Green Party banned Icke. Green Anarchist threw out both their former rapidly-moving-right editor Richard Hunt and apparent agent provacateur/BNP member Tim Hepple. The Third Positionists have remained a tiny, divided and whole uninfluential force. Yet often Greens argue that their politics is 'new' and beyond, as they see it, the essentially trivial 'old' arguments of left and right. Without engaging with such 'old' politics, Greens can place themselves in a position were appropriation by both the State and the far-right becomes all too easy. Ironically, Herbert Gruhl - who coined the phrase that Green 'is neither Left not Right but ahead' - promptly left the German Greens to form his own far-right Ecological Democratic Party in the 1980s, complete with neo-Nazi sympathisers.

Ignorance is far from bliss. Fascism/Nazism is a surprisingly plastic fundamentalism, willing to change ideological clothes to gain support and win power for a core philosophy. The far-right, briefly, inhistorically recruited radical Greens and successfully presented their own arguments as part of an environmental agenda. Unless Greens clearly define how they differ from the far-right, they will continue to be ripe for reappropriation by softly-spoken Nazis who articulate a rhetoric of decentralisation, justice, and the rural, while seeking to build insular authoritarian communities based on atavistic notions of blood-and-soil and anti-semitic hatred.

The Green movement, often better at providing a description of crisis and utopian prescription, seems to lack a firm and convincing explanation of why we live in a world of injustice and ecological destruction. Yet without an analysis of power and a much clearer debate around the issue of agency, the world merely appears to be a confusing and depressing place, where Conspiracy can become a way of explaining apparent injustices and irrationalities. Far-right ideologies, although relatively isolated, are dangerous because they provide an explanatory framework within which any problem can be placed, and presented to groups who feel disempowered and under threat. The authoritarian environmentalists can be seen as substituting social explanation for biological myth, seeing destruction of the Earth as a function of diffuse human nature. Without an account of how capitalism fuels ecological destructive growth and feeds from human exploitation, Green politics is prey to righ

But Green concerns are spectacularly multi-cultural. They are to be found in Jamaican society, amongst African-American deep ecologists such as MOVE in Philadelphia, amongst the emerging West African Green Parties, within Muslim and Jewish traditions. The opportunity for learning and mutual criticism is almost infinite but relatively unexplored.

Global environmental destruction and poverty are products of racist colonialism and neo-colonialism. Without a culturally informed self-critical and anti-imperialist analysis, today's youthful environmental protester could, via the explanations of the far right, become tomorrow's embittered anti-semite.

Sounds like a fairly typical scenario, although the anarchists I have been familiar with would know to step back and let it play out. The Left/Right dynamic is usually more of a 'here we go again' thing with them

Unless this was a sort of war over 'intellectual territory,' people lose perspective there as they lose track of what they are fighting over, This is why I tend to take a back seat when ideologues start rolling their sleeves up, very little is actually gained.

The Idiots and Fools of Neturei Karta

Image

Ultra-Orthodox Sect Reported to Have Spoken at a Meeting of National Front Supporters

If the Jewish Chronicle are correct, Strictly Orthodox Neturei Karta's new alliance with extreme right and there is no reason to believe otherwise, then one Rabbi Aharon Cohen from NK spoke to a meeting consisting of fascists, holocaust deniers and assorted anti-Semites. The photograph certainly looks genuine enough and given Cohen’s previous record of attending the Tehran Conference which brought together an assorted collection of far-right freaks and holocaust deniers, then it is all too plausible.

Neturei Karta’s actions don’t just involve themselves but others with whom they demonstrate. Whilst we cannot prevent them attending the demonstrations and counter-demonstrations we organise, the time has come when they should no longer be given a platform. If they wish to speak alongside supporters of the Palestinians and anti-Zionists then they have to respect the wishes of others, prime amongst which is we don’t have relations or contacts with fascists, overt anti-semites or holocaust deniers. We leave such things to the Zionist movement.

What beggars belief is that Aharon Cohen justified his action as being about warning the fascists and assorted crazies of the dangers of ‘Zionism’. Zionism is a product of the far-right and anti-Semitism. Without anti-Semitism there would have been no Zionism. If Cohen had bothered to lift his head out of the Torah, Talmud and other useless sources of information and read something about the history of Zionism, then he would have come across the founder of Political Zionism Theodor Herzl proclamations in his Diaries that ‘the anti-Semites will become our most dependable friends, the anti-Semitic countries our allies. We want to emigrate as respected people.’ pp 83/84 Diaries Because Herzl’s attitude to anti-Semitism was quite explicit: ‘In Paris ...I achieved a freer attitude towards anti-Semitism, which I now began to understand historically and to pardon. Above all I recognise the emptiness and futility of trying to ‘combat’ anti-Semitism. ’ Diaries p.6.

Anti-Semitism and Zionism went together like Bonnie & Clyde. To lecture anti-Semites on the perils of Zionist libels about ‘anti-Semitism’ is to miss the point altogether.

Present at this meeting were ex-NF member Troy Southgate and friend of David Irving and Gilad Atzmon Lady Michele Renouf.

According to the Jewish Chronicle Baron wrote after the meeting that ‘While the Zionists use antisemitism as a big club to batter the goyim over their heads, for the devout Torah-true Jews it is a sign that they are doing something wrong.’

If this is accurately reported, and it’s always difficult with the JC to distinguish fact from fiction, then it just proves what a calamitous decision Neturei Karta have made. The Zionists don’t use ‘anti-Semitism’ to batter goyim over the head but an entirely different weapon that is mislabelled ‘anti-Semitism’ is used to batter over the head people who support the Palestinians and oppose Zionism. This does not include inveterate anti-Semites of the David Duke variety. The ‘goyim’ that Baron refers to are Jew-haters like himself. The mere use of the phrase ‘goyim’ is telling, since the libel of ‘anti-Semitism’ is used against Jewish as well as non-Jewish critics of Zionism.

The fact, if it is a fact, that Rabbi Cohen ‘differentiated what he said was the ancient bigotry of antisemitism with the response particularly in the Muslim world to Zionist atrocities’ is immaterial. What matters is his audience. And if he has been quoted correctly then Aharon Cohen is doubly stupid. Gilbert Achcar, Brian Klug and myself have argued that what is termed ‘anti-Semitism’ in the Middle East is a reaction to Zionism and doesn’t have the same social roots as European anti-Semitism. But Cohen wasn’t speaking to an Arab audience. He was speaking to died-in-the-wool anti-Semites. His decision is, to say the least, baffling.

Gerry Gable, editor of Searchlight, informs us re Rabbi Cohen that the Nazis are welcome to this quisling. Gerry Gable is someone who would do well to keep is over-sized mouth shut. Not only did he marry a fascist, Sonia Hochfelder, but he was caught red-handed in 1977 urging his superior at London Weekend Television Barry Cox not to give sympathetic coverage to the then Labour government deportations of Phil Agee, an ex-CIA agent and Mark Hosenball, a journalist. Gable was acting a mouthpiece for the security services and MI5 with whom he boasted close connections, as well as the Israeli security services. Gable also planted false charges, alleging the anarchist Class-War group were working with if not a front for the National Front in the 1980’s’. The result of these false allegations was to seriously destabilise Anti-Fascist Action. See my article on Gable’s activities Undermining Anti-Fascists, Defending Zionism

Gable is well known as someone who trades information on the left and anti-fascist movement with the secret state. No anti-fascist worth their salt has anything to do with someone who is a political pimp.

If anyone is a quisling it is Gable himself, having acted as an uncritical mouthpiece for Zionist collusion with fascist groups like the Lebanese Phalange and maintained silence over the close connections between the current Israeli government and far-right politicians, including neo-Nazis in Europe.

As for the Zionist Community Security Trust, having stewarded a demonstration that included EDL members outside the Israeli embassy, having refused to criticise Zionist Federation officer Jonathan Hoffman and others for demonstrating alongside the EDL and having supplied false and perjured evidence in an attempt to secure the deportation of Sheikh Raed Salah of Israel’s Northern Islamic League, its reputation is at rock-bottom. Their comment that Neturei Karta has “played with left-wing extremists and Islamists, including the Holocaust-denying Tehran regime, Neturei Karta can now add British fascists to their list of consorts.’ says more about the CST than NK. But then CST always had a soft spot for 'right-wing extremists' as opposed to their left-wing counterpart!

Nonetheless, despite the hypocritical cant from the CST, Gable and Harry’s Place, the fact is that NK should be hauled over the coals and told in no uncertain terms that if they want any connection with the Palestine solidarity movement then contacts, any contacts, with the anti-Semitic and fascist/holocaust denying right is unacceptable. Period.

Below is an interesting article on the links between another nutcase, Gilad Atzmon and Alexander Baron.

Alexander Baron & Gilad Atzmon- A Mutual Admiration Society
Image

It seems Atzmon is getting even bolder in his open anti-semitism. In a blog post dated the 27th December he links to a supportive article from the homophobic plagiarist Alexander Baron.

Baron is one of the lesser known figures on the far right, so a bit of background. He’s openly antisemitic and a holocaust denier as this quote from his website shows shows:

"I have published on the Holocaust and Holocaust Revisionism – what is known pejoratively and inaccurately as Holocaust Denial. I have published a book length exposé of Zionist agent and sexual deviant David Irving".

He uses the traditional antisemite tactic of blaming Jews for antisemitism. He describes the “Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion” as: Organized Jewry’s Deadliest Weapon

Baron isn’t just a lone crank, he has operational links with the Evolian think-tank “New Right”, set up by the veteren far-right activist and founder of “National Anarchism”, Troy Southgate. Southgate acts as secretary of the group, which has Jonathan Bowden (who used to be in the Monday Club, the Revolutionary Conservative Caucus, the Freedom Party and the BNP) as its chairman. So, much like Southgate, this is someone with a long history of neo-fascist activism. Another person involved with the New Right is the veteran fascist and Holocaust denier Lady Michelle Renouf. Baron thanks her in his writing up of the 2010 conference so he obviously knows her relatively well. Baron himself spoke at the 2005 launch of the group and the 2010 and 2011 conferences.

Considering this is all easily available on Baron’s website (which is where the article Atzmon links to is from), there is no way Atzmon won’t have seen at least some of it.

So why might Atzmon be attracted to Baron and by extension the New Right?

I’d say it’s an ideological convergence. Despite the claims from some quarters, while Atzmon is undoubtedly on the far right, his particular allegiance isn’t to Neonazi interpretations of fascism. (The fact some are pushing this merely illustrates the lack of serious anti-fascist analysis around at the moment. Nobody with even a basic understanding of far-right ideology would be arguing this). His is more a kind of ‘post-modern’, cultural take on far right themes. So he’s going to be attracted to the likes of Baron who present themselves as “beyond left and right”. And the founding statement of the New Right could come straight from Atzmon himself:

We are opposed to liberalism, democracy and egalitarianism and fight to restore the eternal tsunami that have become submerged beneath the corrosive tsunami of the modern world.

(For a more in-depth analysis of this specific strand of neofascism, see Co-opting the Counter Culture: Troy Southgate and the National Revolutionary Faction) by Graham D. Macklin).

Some conclusions.

While it might have been previous possible to claim that, while a racist, Atzmon wasn’t a fascist, that is definitely no longer the case. Atzmon is now openly linking to the organised far right, which makes him one of them. As such, no platform is the correct position to take, whatever that may entail.

And those like Roy Bard/FreeThePeeps (who was behind the Indymedia coup) and Lauren Booth who are still defending Atzmon have to be treated as fascists themselves at this point. Even if they don’t actively follow far right ideologies, they are now overtly collaborating with fascists. At this point, it doesn’t make any difference whether this is deliberate or is the product of stupidity and wilful ignorance. While not quite at the same level yet, Mikey Ezra of Harry’s Place also needs watching carefully. While he may see getting his books signed by fascists as some kind of jolly public school jape, I beg to differ.

You are either anti-fascist or you are pro-fascist. There is no middle ground and none will be accepted.

What follows is a critical and supplemented condensation of three books on the history of environmentalism written between 1985 and 1994 by Oxford History Professor Anna Bramwell.

The latter two books were published by Yale University. The books make clear the Third Reich was a radical environmentalist regime. The Nazis promoted organic farming, reforestation, species preservation, naturalism, neo-paganism, holistic science, animal rights, sun-worship, herbalism, anti-capitalism, ecology, anti-urbanism, alternative energy, hysterical anti-pollutionism and apocalyptic anti-industrialism. At the same time the British ecology movement was stridently, treasonously fascist. While these aspects of Bramwell’s writings have been commented on, however inadequately, much less has been said about her treatment of post-WWII environmentalism. Here she provides useful insights into the wholesale corruption of the scientific community, the capturing of key organizations and the manipulation of the mass media by the environmental movement. Bramwell is not a passive observer of this process and conceals key players, interests and motives.

…affiliated with the Enoch Powell branch of the Tory Party via The Monday Club

Overview

Founded in the early 1960s during the party's internal debate over decolonisation, its published aims state that "The Monday Club seeks to evolve a dynamic application of traditional Tory principles".[3] Roger Griffin referred to the Club as practising an anti-socialist and elitist form of conservatism.

The Monday Club had various study groups (later renamed policy committees) including:

Immigration and Repatriation: notable chairmen being George Kennedy Young CB, MBE; Harvey Proctor MP; The Honourable Jonathan Guinness; (John Bercow, now an MP and Speaker of the House of Commons, was committee secretary 1981-82);

Young Members Group; Dr. Anna Bramwell, David Rowell, Eleanor Dodd, John R. Pinniger, AVR Smith, Rod Morris.
Defence: The Honourable Archibald Hamilton MP; Major Sir Patrick Wall MP KBE, MC, VRD; Commander Anthony Courtney MP OBE; Rear-Admiral Martin Wemyss CB
Foreign Affairs: Geoffrey Stewart-Smith MP; The Earl of Kimberley,[29] John Carlisle MP and Gregory Lauder-Frost.

……The Monday Club acted as a sort of, what’s an appropriate term …..grey area…..where the right-wing venn diagram could overlap under an ostensibly respectable cover …..like quite a few of those names ( Geo Kennedy Young ( at one point deputy director of MI6 ) , Harvey Procter ) with elements well to the right of the official Tories….per this snippet from the General Secretary of the Searchlight Central Committee Mr Gable himself……

This is a very busy time at the moment for Anti-Fascists. The British Democratic Party launch on Saturday and the BNP already have a National Speaker tour being conducted by their boss Nick Griffin. It has a amusing side to it as Griffin furious about the rival group launching in Leicester this Saturday has decided to hold his peopl talk for his deminishing gang of followers in the same City, however I could not let pass the remark about Anarchists and the Green as some kind of wrong doing in the pages of Searchlight, way back.
Yes we did a number of stories about the infiltration of some Anarchist groups. For anybody who has followed the stories of the infiltration by the Police of all sorts of groups over many years ranging from Peace, Enviromental, anti-war, animal rights groups. I think this more than bears out what were were warning against.
As for the Greens readers might recall our report on turning up at a annual Green Party conference and asking why one of their key note speakers was Anna Bramwell the Young Members Organisers of Monday Club , who also active in the Enock Powell support group Powellite run by a ex-spook Bee Carthew.
Anna’s husband Roy was a hard line nazi and a slum landlord. There was uproad and she had to leave Greens AGM. Another person present who peddled himself as a Roma, whilst also being a member of the National Front.
Anna went on to write a number of books about Hitlers ideas on Green matters and one book that was widely reviewed on Adolf’s Ecological Minister. For some odd reason shrouded in mystery Anna ended up working for the Overseas Aid and development body at their Paris office.

Searchlight had been working with one of the German Green Partys MEP’s where a whole Lands(State) group had to be shut down by the National Party because it was knee deep in nazi infiltrators.
I read recently on the Hope not hate site that the Ogreave Miners support group had told Griffn to take a hike when he offered his support. Hnh claims that this was because they were able to warn the Miners, thats more like it, but they forgot to mention that at the height of the Miners strike when Griffins then Political Soldier wing of the NF a similar offer of assistance was uncovered through our sources inside the Political Soldiers and literaly at five to midnight we stopped them organising a fund raising meeting for the striking Miners in London.
This was only one of several infiltration attempts to get inside working class groups at that time, the whistle was blown on them all.
So when people drop in throw away lines about Searchlight, Green and anarchists the posters should know what they are talking about.
Salud.
By the way I was with my Comrade Bob Archer this morning and he is outraged by the ill informed attacks on Sonia and the Academy School where she serves as a Governor.

TBH, I couldn't make a lot of sense about what Gerry Gable was 'warning' about above, and sounded a bit like vague scaremongering to me

I can't work out if it's just badly written, or this is how they communicate to each other... lots of buzzwords and never mind the information content. I liked this too:

This is a very busy time at the moment for Anti-Fascists.

It's actually not a busy time for anti-fascists, their traditional and visible opponents are fading, and maybe this explains why they are seeing Nazis under the bed. The Far Right were always on about infiltrators too, it's like that was what they actually wanted.

From a couple of years ago:

BNP links to US extremists revealed by Anonymous
'Hactivists' target websites of far-right American Third Position and publish emails praising BNP leader Nick Griffin

Alexandra Topping
The Guardian, Wednesday 1 February 2012

Image
Nick Griffin was described in one email as 'probably the most effective white activist in the world today'.

Hacked emails from a far-right group appear to reveal links with the BNP, after the group of American "hactivists" Anonymous targeted a number of US extremists' websites.

The group infiltrated the site of American Third Position, a white nationalist political group, in a campaign ironically dubbed "Operation Blitzkrieg", publishing emails in which it praised the BNP leader, Nick Griffin.

In one January 2010 email from "WhiteNewsNow" with the subject "Your Beautiful Pontoon Bridge", Griffin is described as "probably the most effective white activist in the world today".

A member of the group writes: "I've got my tickets for Jared Taylor's 2010 American Renaissance. Your fellow WhiteNewsNow members [...] are meeting up with some more of us and probably the most effective White activist in the world today, Nick Griffin."

In another from December 2009, the sender refers to Griffin in an email about the Copenhagen climate conference. It states: "Today will definitely be a Pearl Harbor for the Global Warming criminals who are at this moment cringing in the 4,200-seat arena in Copenhagen where Nick Griffin is clobbering them with the truth about Climategate. Good things are happening … and this is our chance to seize the opportunity."

The links between the two groups appear to be current. Former BNP leadership contender Andrew Brons is mentioned in an email titled "minutes for leadership phone conference January 7, 2012".

It states: "Next Meeting: Andrew Brons, Member of European Parliament and no. 2 in BNP, will be joining our phone conference. He has expressed enthusiasm about Merlin's [Merlin Miller, the party's nominee for the 2012 presidential election] presidential campaign. We must be prepared ahead of time by subject matter, questions and inquiring director."

A spokesman for the BNP could not confirm or deny whether the party had links or was in contact with American Third Position. "We don't know if [Andrew Brons] had contact with them over the phone. If he did we don't see what the issue is, he's a popular MEP. If he spoke to them he's been elected to speak to people and share ideas, we speak to everyone including Muslim groups."

Commenting on American Third Position presidential nominee Merlin Miller, he added: "With regards to America, we would welcome any deviation from the farce of two-party politics."

Anonymous – a collective of hackers without any centralised authority – published thousands of personal emails, forum messages and personal details of members under the banner "Good Night, White Pride".

In a statement, the hackers denounced American Third Position as "racist losers" who "try hard to maintain a professional public image to camouflage their vile racism [...] we're now airing all their dirty laundry all over the internet."

It continued: "We call upon not only other anti-fascists but all those opposed to white supremacy to utilise this information and make hell for these white nationalist scumbags. It is essential if we wish to live in a world free from oppression to expose and confront racists at their jobs, their schools, at their homes and in the streets."

…yes, yes …..this was the gist of the whole yah-boo Searchlight thing…..

…surely Sonia Gable official legend is she was an anti-fascist infiltrator into the League of Saint George….

(For a more in-depth analysis of this specific strand of neofascism, see Co-opting the Counter Culture: Troy Southgate and the National Revolutionary Faction) by Graham D. Macklin).

Sort of got Gable's Garble now. It's seems another fairly general worry on the theme of infiltrators.

I think it is more likely that, people being what they are, are just interested in other groups, and cross pollination is a lot more widespread that in Gerry Gable's carefully delineated world.

Besides, from what I know of the Far Right, they would have trouble finding someone who would have the skills or the inclination to 'infiltrate' successfully. Also, they do not feel particularly threatened by the Left anymore, they know it is old hat and inneffective. Quaint even.

Tony Greenstein, eh?
Neturei Karta, eh?

Fair enough.

I think the role of... Hasbara in a European context is quite important in this.
Hasbara activists have even had a presence on R.I. - and threatened it in an on-going campaign.
I even posted links on it in the thread in the Firepit.

Do you specifically include fighting Hasbara... within anti-Fascist activities, AD?
Personally, I think they absolutely ARE.

What specifically is your clearly stated, unambiguous position on them?

That article "BNP links to US extremists revealed by Anonymous" is just bloody silly. It's basically saying "American Far Right give thumbs-up to British far right", and we have emails to prove it.

Big surprise there then. Basically a way to get some buzzwords on the page whilst saying absolutely nothing new or useful. That's the MSM for you (as if we didn't already know)

I'm actually very interested in this as I learned next to nothing about this sort of stuff from British WN sources.

It's not that they didn't talk about the Jews etc, the opposite in fact, it's just that what was said was so cluttered with other nonsense as to obscure almost everything.

(if you're getting at what I think you are, then I'm very interested, in that professionalism, fervour and dedication do sort of stand out)

I do certainly think opposition to the racist, settler colonialist policies of the Israeli State is important- and certainly do support strategies such as BDS.

More to the point of this thread, I think support and opposition to those policies is interfacing with White Nationalists/"Ultra Nationalists" across Europe in very interesting ways. I'm certainly willing to discuss that on this thread- and in a parallel way- the emerging role of Islamophobia in that context.

That said, I think Semper raises a fair point which is that Gilad/Greenstein issues have the potential to light our world on fire. I would be willing to revisit some of those issues- under duress- but only on a separate thread, and only insofar as we could keep it contained to a productive dialogue. In that, your skills and years of focus on communication issues might come in handy...

"Hasbara" courses at Israeli universities exposed in new report
Yara Sa'di The Electronic Intifada Haifa 15 July 2013

Various Israeli academic institutions have introduced courses and programs on hasbara — the Hebrew-language term used to describe Israel’s attempts to re-brand its image as its occupation and military aggression makes it increasingly unpopular worldwide.

A new report from the Academic Watch Project shows that instead of promoting critical thought and inquiry, these courses at academic institutions serve to promote the policies of the State of Israel and the whitewashing of its crimes. The Academic Watch Project is a group of Palestinian students at Israeli academic institutions dedicated to exposing discrimination within Israeli academia and its connection with Israel’s military occupation and apartheid policies.

“A Word on Hasbara” aims to uncover the content of these courses and programs and their funding. It also seeks to reveal their connections with the ministries of foreign affairs and public diplomacy and international Zionist groups.

“Unofficial ambassadors”

One such course — “Ambassadors Online” (or “Ambassadors on the Web”) — offered at Haifa University boasts the slogan “Volunteering, Zionism, Digital Diplomacy.”

The course’s webpage features the logos of two Israeli ministries as well as those of Birthright Israel and StandWithUs, groups which aim to promote Israel among US college students — and offers the synopsis: “[the] goal is to provide Israeli university students with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to become unofficial ambassadors of Israel. The cadets of the project receive training which prepares them to effectively challenge the de-legitimization claims, engage in a dialogue with anti-Israeli activists and improve Israel’s image abroad by expanding the positive knowledge about the country.”

Eli Avraham, a co-founder of the “Ambassadors on the Web” course, said in an interview with The Canadian Jewish news: “when false claims are made about Israel, such as labeling it an apartheid state, people need to be equipped with knowledge and tools to speak out against those claims.”

He added: “The main idea is that this is about how to use the new media to reclaim Israel’s narrative and promote Israel’s point of view” (“Haifa U course teaches web hasbara strategies,” 13 March 2012).

Year-long hasbara program

IDC Herzliya’s Ambassador Club is a year-long program for more than two hundred students from thirty countries run in partnership with StandWithUs. The program includes lectures on media, economy and history in order to “arm the students with the latest surveys and data and to teach them how to present the Israeli narrative” in North America and Europe. At the end of the course, each participant receives “an accreditation endorsed by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” according to the StandWithUs website.

Student unions at Israeli universities also provide hasbara programs. The National Union of Israeli Students aims to fight “anti-Semitism” and “delegitimization of the State of Israel” by paying Israeli students $2,000 in return for writing comments and letters on social network sites promoting Israel and “refuting” criticism of the state’s policies for five hours per week.

These hasbara courses were put into practice last November, when Israel bombed Gaza for eight consecutive days. The student union at IDC Herzliya, in coordination with the ministries of media and public diplomacy, formed “a war center” to promote the Israeli army and its aggression. The “war center” received information directly from the Israeli army and the prime minister’s office.

Coexistence lie

Even more cynically, these programs are being used to promote a false narrative of coexistence, like the one boasted in a recent Times of Israel piece on the Ambassadors Online program at Haifa University. The article, titled “Muslim, Druze and Jewish students band together to improve Israel’s global image,” describes how students are trained to undermine the global boycott Israel movement.

But despite the hasbara lie of Israel being a bastion of peace and coexistence, as the Haifa University program trains students to promote, the reality for Palestinian students at Israeli universities is much different.

While the Ambassadors Online participants “monitored the media for biased coverage and took part in the shaping of positive public opinion towards Israel” during the bombing of Gaza last November, Palestinian students at Haifa University who protested the attacks were demonized by the city’s mayor as “terrorist supporters” and banned by the university from demonstrating on campus.

What these hasbara programs ultimately reveal is that Israel is losing the public relations battle and is desperately investing massive resources into improving its image. The role of Israeli academic institutions in these deceptive efforts reaffirm their role in serving the policies of the state, rather than promoting academic values and integrity.
