Exactly right. This posting style is rude and disruptive. One could say AD is trolling GD.

concur.

Yep ... agreed.

My experience is that trying to sustain / develop a conversation in this thread is like having a meeting without any agenda, run by a person who is handing out large amounts of new information in the form of long, quite dense material, presented without context (I am left wondering - "is this NEXT post a kind of passing FYI? Is it meant to be densely read? Does it relate to previous posts? Has the thread creator read it himself?)

Context is very important for making sense of new information.
Simply collecting new information is NOT ENOUGH. One needs to decide what it MEANS.
Simply posting an ambiguous thread title followed by long articles doesnt create clarity on what is wanted or expected from the thread.

If you leave out that by having a CopyPasta spree of long article after long article, without a clear context - it is just turning GD into an uncollated, meaning-free mess for the reader, collection of items on AD's theme de jour. If he wants to do that, it isnt General Discussion.

My issues are almost all at the level of process and information management, rather than content. IT is leading to a LACK of clarity, discussion and dialogue. The meaning of things changes over time - yesterday's newspaper becomes today's firestarter with nothing more than the passage of time happening.
I think of it like a cafe. TIDS is like a big pile books and picture in a corner. We have as a Board allowed it a space and sometimes go and sit and read silently over there.
This thread isnt like that.

The General Discussion cafe is not going to be turned into AD's personal interest, randomised, meaning-free discussion-free library.

I have a long term goal regarding RI that may be hopelessly wishful, but it's not bad to have a goal... that is to convert this subject area back into into something that people don't avoid due to all the 'sound and fury signifying nothing' surrounding it.

It would be nice if Basement Jack were to keep posting, that would be a start.

Just wanted to add another little snippet to the ways of combatting white nationalists online. A fair few of these will state that they just want to live with whites and be left alone, I find it hard to argue outright with this, and any arguments usually will be based upon perceived hidden attitudes, which usually gets you nowhere.

A little splinter to insert into their utopian dream is to mention that you will be sending all the 'entitled' and useless white trash (from your own community) in their direction too, as they will undoubtedly receive a warm welcome.

Because WN's focus entirely on race, they will not really be able to easily refuse this kind offer, an argument I have come across is that there is no such thing as 'white trash'( chavs), and that whites who behave this way, especially over generations have been culturally compromised and brainwashed counter to their genetic potential.
So like I said... they should receive a warm welcome.

Of course, once a WN community starts to bulge at the seams with useless eaters, then their thoughts may turn to ideas of 'lebensraum' and expansion, but that's another stroty.

Anti-Fascists are connecting the dots and mobilizing, both sides of the Atlantic, just as the racists/fascists are:

Left, Right, and Wrong: Drawing a Line Against NATA in New York [UPDATED]

Posted on February 4, 2013

We are a group of autonomous anti-fascists in NYC who are responding to recent events concerning a far right group called National Anarchist Tribal Alliance New York (NATA–NY). They are closely connected to international fascist groups and endorse white separatism, holocaust denial, and anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.

Image

National-Anarchism grew out of Third Position fascism, which is an anti-capitalist offshoot that believes in racial separatism rather than white supremacy. National-Anarchism was formed by aging Nazi skinheads in an attempt to infiltrate anarchist and radical movements and turn these activists towards far right politics. Some U.S. National-Anarchists prefer to say “tribal” instead “national”; this refers to organizing different, often ethnically separate “tribal” tendencies into a pan-secessionist alliance. There are similar groups in Germany, Russia, etc. which dress up as anarchists or left-wing groups, and appropriate their images and slogans—but promote ideas of xenophobia, white supremacy, racialism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and homophobia.

Image
Troy Southgate has been a fascist activist since the 1980s
and is the leader of the National “Anarchist” Movement (NAM)

In Britain, National-Anarchists publish books about obscure fascist leaders in an effort to revive their ideas. In Australia, they are involved in anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant politics and are led by a former member of Volksfront, a Nazi skinhead gang. The Bay Area group was involved in a May Day street battle with antifascists after participating in an anti-immigration rally with the Minutemen. Their other activities included infiltrating a pro-Palestinian parade with anti-Semitic propaganda, donating food only to white homeless people, protesting a queer street fair and screenings of the movie ‘Machete’ (for supposedly being anti-white), and burning a Koran. Members of all of these groups have moved back-and-forth between National-Anarchist organizing and traditional fascist and far right political work.

Image
NATA-NY founders Jamie O’Hara and Craig Fitzgerald

The New York group formed two years ago but until recently has been mostly inactive, at least after its leader Craig Fitzgerald—a conspiracy theorist who has been involved with right-wing groups like the John Birch Society and the Constitution Party—moved upstate last year. On the NATA FB page Fitzgerald promotes holocaust denial and apologizes for the Minutemen and neo-Nazis like the Golden Dawn. Fitzgerald says he is not a white separatist but has publicly endorsed white separatists’ rights over and over again, and he is speaking at an upcoming “Anarchy in the NYC” conference that will be held on 4/20. NATA’s website was originally set up by Andrew Yeoman, then leader of National-Anarchism’s Bay Area group. NATA is also a member of the international National-Anarchist Movement (whose obsession with white separatism and thinly-veiled anti-Semitic conspiracies is more obvious), even though the New York group itself straddles the line between crypto-fascism and the racist, anti-Semitic wing of Ron Paul-style libertarianism.

Image

The NAM Manifesto states: “Racial separatism is the only way that
the organic balance can be restored.” *

We understand some members of NATA circles are people of color, but they still are active in an organized political group which endorses white separatism, holocaust denial, and anti-Jewish ideas, and whose sister National-Anarchist groups engage in anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, and homophobic activism. There is also a long history of people of color in fascist and far right movements in Latin America and Asia.

As anti-authoritarians we stand opposed to nationalism and racism—including attempts to “voluntarily” bring back Jim Crow racial separatism—as well as capitalism, the state, and bigotries such as homophobia, patriarchy, Islamopobia, anti-Semitism, and anti-immigrant views. We call on all fellow radicals and punks to deny National-Anarchists (and all other groups with similar views) the use of radical spaces and participation in radical groups—not just in New York City, but everywhere.

UPDATE: Shortly after this post was circulated, a band who had recently been dropped from an ABC No Rio show responded by renouncing NATA. Most encouragingly, the member of that band who administered NATA’s Facebook page says he has left NATA, claiming he did realize the nature of the group. For this reason, we have removed identifying information about the band from this post.

*From the the National-Anarchist Manifesto:

“Race defines who we are…. Without maintaining this essential diversity, something you can find throughout nature, the world will become increasingly drab, standardised and monotonous and the only people left on the planet will inevitably form part of a coffee-coloured mush of uniform humanity. National-Anarchists wish to preserve the different races of the earth and believe that multi-racialism ends with the dissolution of all races. Racial separatism is the only way that the organic balance can be restored.”

Above, I notice a call to arms for anti-fascists on both sides of the Atlantic, and a suggestion that there is a similar signicant alliance amongst their opponents.
Whilst there is a some truth to this, I think this is overstated to the extent that opportunities to combat white nationalism/supremacism are likely to be missed.

Several times here I've pointed out and described how the differences between white nationalism (American), and the traditional nation-based nationalisms of Europe are significant enough to provide a useful tool to Europeans opposing this American import, and to dwell on the above equivelance negates this tool.

Not only that though, it also handicaps Americans from developing their own strategies. Throughout this thread I've seen an enormous concentration on the British scene, and this does not really help Americans at all, this is also a slightly selfish obsevation because I really want to learn about the American side of things, I'm pretty well versed with the situation in the UK

Such pernicious bullshit doctrines surely have spread with the help of neo-fascist networks enjoying deep state connections. Just because they are small right now does not mean that they aren't important.

National Anarchism (Again)

Posted on May 30, 2009 by @ndy

Recently, Vertigo, a student newspaper published by the University of Technology, Sydney, for reasons best known to the editors (and in possible ignorance of certain political realities) has provided an outlet for the views of ‘national anarchists’ (see : ‘A is for Anarchy’, Bonita Silva and Donna Yan, May 19, 2009; my own thoughts on the article may be found here). To the best of my knowledge, this is the first occasion upon which ‘national anarchism’ — despite the term’s oxymoronic composition — has been recognised as constituting a legitimate part of the spectrum of anarchist opinion within Australia. It occurs at the same time as German authorities have noted an upsurge in fascist violence associated with the ‘national anarchist’ milieu in Germany; as the Southern Poverty Law Centre has for the first time taken note of similar ideological developments among the far right in the United States; and just a few months after Spencer Sunshine dissected ‘national anarchism’ for US publication Public Eye (‘Rebranding Fascism: National-Anarchists’, Vol.23, No.4, Winter 2008). It is also being published over eighteen months after local anarchist groups issued a statement exposing the ‘national anarchists’ — organised under the banner of the ‘New Right’ — as being the latest in a long line of fascist groupuscules. (See also : “Pathetic Australian anarchist statement on the New Reich”.)

Below I re-publish Der Spiegel‘s article on ‘national anarchist’/fascist violence in Germany, and the SPLC’s examination of ‘national anarchism’ in San Francisco.

‘National Anarchism’: California Racists Claim They’re Anarchists, Casey Sanchez, Intelligence Report, Summer 2009:

San Francisco — At this year’s Bay Area Anarchist Bookfair, held in Golden Gate Park in mid-March, there was plenty of discord among the 6,000 or so anarchists in attendance. The militant vegans of the Animal Liberation Front, for instance, sold books advocating violence in defense of animal rights while a nearby “anarcho-steampunk” (a survivalist with a fetish for Victorian-era steam-powered contraptions) casually skinned a roadkill raccoon. “It’s good protein,” he offered.

Unifying anarchists has been likened to herding cats. But if there is one theme that most anarchists will rally around, it is that of stamping out racism, especially organized racism driven by white nationalist ideology. Many younger anarchists are members of Anti-Racist Action, a national coalition of direct-action “antifa” (short for “anti-fascist”) groups that confront neo-Nazis and racist skinheads in the street, often resulting in violence. At the Golden Gate book fair, one antifa crew handed out stickers with a telephone hotline number that called out the racist skinhead groups Volksfront and the Hammerskins and encouraged fellow anarchists to report in with “Information on Racist/Fascist activity in your area.”

Note that leading ‘national anarchist’ ideologue Welf Herfurth — a former representative of neo-Nazi skinhead organisation ‘Blood & Honour’ in NSW — has recently joined forces with Douglas Schott of neo-Nazi reich ‘n’ roll band Blood Red Eagle to (re-)launch ‘Volksfront Australia’ — much to the displeasure of ‘Blood & Honour’.

But also lurking at the book fair was a handful of little-noticed anarchists of a different sort — so-called “national anarchists,” who advocate racial separatism and white racial purity. They’re also fiercely anti-gay and anti-Israel. Calling themselves the Bay Area National Anarchists (BANANAS), they envision a future race war leading to neo-tribal, whites-only enclaves to be called “National Autonomous Zones.”

“We are racial separatists for a number of reasons, such as our desire to maintain our cultural continuity, the principle of voluntary association, and as a self-defensive measure to protect each other from being victimized by crime from other races,” BANANAS co-founder Andrew Yeoman told the Intelligence Report.

Members of BANANAS and other likeminded national anarchists cloak their bigotry in the language of radical environmentalism and mystical tribalism, pulling recruits from both the extreme right and [?] the far left.

“It’s an extremely diverse group,” said Yeoman, with no hint of irony. “We have ex-liberals, ex-neo-cons, we have Ron Paul supporters, we have ex-boneheads, we have apolitical people that have been turned on to our causes.”

Although national anarchism in the U.S. remains a relatively obscure movement, made up of probably fewer than 200 individuals in BANANAS and a couple of other groups in northern California and Idaho, organizations based on national anarchist ideology have gained a foothold in Russia and sown turmoil in the environmental movement in Germany. There are enthusiasts in Britain, Spain and Australia, among other overseas nations. Now, national anarchists in the U.S. are carefully studying the successes and failures of their more prominent international counterparts as they attempt to similarly win converts from the radical environmentalist and white nationalist movements in this country.

“The danger National Anarchists represent is not in their marginal political strength, but in their potential to show an innovative way that fascist groups can re-brand themselves and reset their project on a new footing,” said a report issued last December by Political Research Associates, a Massachusetts-based progressive think tank. “They have abandoned many traditional fascist practices — including the use of overt neo-Nazi references. In [their] place they offer a more toned down, sophisticated approach … often claiming not to be ‘fascist’ at all.”

‘Entryism’ and the Left

Indeed, one of national anarchists’ principal tactics is called “entryism,” defined in one of the movement’s how-to guides as “the name given to the process of entering or infiltrating bona fide organizations, institutions and political parties with the intention of gaining control of them for our own ends.”

In the same manner as their fashion is borrowed from the anarchists, the tactic of ‘entryism’ is something the ‘national anarchists’ have taken from elsewhere, in this case Trotskyism. In the nomenclature of Trotskyism, ‘entryism’ is also referred to as ‘The French Turn’, following Trotsky’s advocacy of the tactic in 1934. In essence, Trotsky advocated his followers to join the parties of the Second International and other equivalent organisations en bloc; the tactic had mixed results, and remains a controversial subject within the remains of the orthodox Trotskyist current. One account of the tactic, by the Trotskyist groupuscule ‘Permanent Revolution’, is available here. On fascists aping anarchist fashion, see : When Nazis go Pop… New strategies of the extreme right in Germany, RAGGACORE, LFO DEMON, 12.11.2004. For fashion tips, “a seemingly ordinary anarchist that has a penchant for being overdressed and rubbing it in” named Adam maintains a blog named The Boulevardier.
In ‘The Case for National-Anarchist Entryism’, leading national anarchist ideologue Troy Southgate, a Briton, called for national anarchists to join political groups and then “misdirect or disrupt them for our own purposes or convert sections of their memberships to our cause.”

Anti-racist anarchists on the West Coast have been aware of national anarchists attempting to infiltrate and exploit their scene since at least 2005, when the Oregon eco-anarchist magazine Green Anarchy issued a warning: “If you encounter these people, don’t be fooled by the surface similarities; treat them as if they were Klan members or Nazis.”

Nevertheless, the doctrines of national anarchism seem to be making inroads into what Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, a longtime researcher of esoteric Aryan racial cults, has called “a folkish or tribal revival among white youth who are beset by an acute sense of disenfranchisement.”

National anarchists appeal to these youths in part by avoiding the trappings of skinhead culture — flight jackets, shaved heads and combat boots — in favor of hooded sweatshirts and bandanas. They act the part of stereotypical anarchists, as envisioned by most Americans outside of far-left circles: black-clad protesters wreaking havoc at political conventions and anti-globalization rallies.

In reality, although militant street action has been a favored and much-noticed tactic of some anarchist groups, most anarchists are less interested in smashing the state than in learning to live outside it. They scavenge surplus groceries for their meals, squat in abandoned buildings and construct pirate radio stations.

Yeoman said it was this do-it-yourself ethos that inspired him to become involved with the anarchist movement not long after the sometimes-violent 1999 anti-globalization demonstrations in Seattle drew international notice. But it didn’t take him long to move towards white separatism. In 2003, “the Anarchist People of Color had a well-known meeting in Detroit in which they prohibited white people from entering,” Yeoman recounted. “It was seen as this progressive thing not to allow white people into their meeting so they could pursue their black agenda or whatever. I really saw that as a huge contradiction between behavior that was allowable for certain kinds of people but not people of my descent.”

Coming Out

BANANAS first began appearing in public in San Francisco only in late 2007. Since then, BANANAS members with “Keep Our Children Safe” signs have protested alongside Christian Right demonstrators outside a gay leather subculture festival in San Francisco and organized a cleanup of San Francisco Bay shores. “Just because you’re proud to be white doesn’t mean you have to let everything go to waste,” one BANANAS member stated in a YouTube video documenting the beach cleanup.

The group also recently formed at least a fleeting alliance with the American Front, a bonehead group based in Sacramento, Calif. American Front leader David Lynch credits BANANAS online with helping raise funds on behalf of a member of the domestic extreme-right terrorist group The Order who’s due to be released from prison early next year.

The American Front traces its lineage back to the 1980s. Its most prominent, but exceedingly coy, member is (was) industrial musician Boyd Rice. Boyd Rice is also (only?) an actor, appearing in the execrable 1999 film Pearls Before Swine, directed, written and produced by Melbourne filmmaker and self-proclaimed ‘transcendental fascist’ Richard Wolstencroft. In addition to being a phenomenally bad writer, yuppie Dick is also the director-for-life of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, its launch in 2000 prompted by the Melbourne International Film Festival’s decision that his swinish film was simply too bad to screen. (One reviewer’s opinion: “I’ve kind of always distrusted Richard Wolstencroft, filmmaker, Melbourne Underground Film Festival director, and tedious bore, partly because of his avowed fascist tendencies. Now that I’ve paid money for and sat through his fucking film, I just want to beat the cunt senseless.”)

Dick courted controversy in 2003 by scheduling a screening of The Search For Truth In History, a video of a lecture by Holocaust revisionist historian David Irving; he also gives props to the Southern Cross Soldiers on his blog.

When all’s said and done, not to be taken too seriously.

The fascist ideological swamp out of which Rice emerged is surveyed in Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke’s The Occult Roots of Nazism: Secret Aryan Cults and Their Influence on Nazi Ideology, New York University Press, 2002; a brief essay by Clarke, ‘The Occult Roots of Nazism’, published by Lapis zine, covers the same territory. Of particular note in this context is the thesis by Kiwi student Roel Van Leeuwen titled ‘Dreamers of the Dark: Kerry Bolton and the Order of the Left Hand Path, a Case-study of a Satanic/Neo-Nazi Synthesis’ (Original, 2008). Kerry’s occult powers have forced the University of Waikato to pull the thesis from its shelves.

Last Dec. 28, BANANAS donned their national anarchist hoodies — emblazoned with “Smash All Dogmas” on the back and “New Right” on both sleeves — tied bandanas over their faces, unfurled a banner reading “Yes We Can, Bay Area National Anarchists” and joined a protest of several thousand against Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip. Practicing full-blown entryism, they marched between groups carrying the Palestinian flag and the gay-pride flag, while shouting, “Fuck, Fuck, Fuck Zionism!”

More recently, BANANAS have started carrying a black flag with the letter Q in one corner. That’s a reference to Yeoman’s claim that his ancestors rode with Quantrill’s Raiders, a notoriously violent pro-Confederate guerrilla outfit that battled for control of the border state of Missouri during the Civil War.

Like their late hero Julius Evola, an esoteric Italian writer and “spiritual racist” lionized by modern-day fascists, BANANAS believe themselves to be in revolt against the modern world. The group’s website carries notes of high praise for neo-Confederate secessionist groups like the League of the South and the Republic of South Carolina. Some of the site’s content is unintentionally comical. For example, BANANAS exalts the lily-white town of Mayberry in the 1960s TV sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show” as “a realized anarchist society.”

Yearning for Eden

The bulk of the BANANAS website, in fact, consists of long-winded blog posts predicting the imminent collapse of multicultural liberalism. Most illustrative of BANANAS’ worldview — and its hopes for the future — is a short piece of urban apocalyptic fiction that Yeoman penned for BANANAS and cross-posted at the white nationalist website Stormfront.org. It’s titled, “The Clock Strikes High Noon.”

The story begins on a San Francisco morning with a young white woman on a bicycle. She witnesses a fight break out between a black man and a Latino. An anti-fascist street punk steps in to break up the fight, only to be beaten down. The bicyclist turns away and pulls out her laptop to discover the country is collapsing: the president has been assassinated, the stock market is in free fall, and the Constitution has been suspended.

Horrified, she speeds home on her bike into the gentrified section of the predominantly Latino Mission district, or “what she likes to call the ‘whiter and brighter’ side of the Mission.” Inside the house, tuning into dire radio and police dispatches, she decides it’s a “better time then [sic] ever to activate the network,” apparently a fictional surrogate for BANANAS. The “network” has caches of food stashed throughout the Bay Area, which members collect and bring together at a “National Autonomous Zone, where people can be trusted to keep the zombies away.”

The “zombies” are non-whites, who “emerge from the confines of the projects and barrios where the city likes to keep their surplus labor contained.” The story ends with the woman on her way out the door to a safe house, chambering a round into her .45 pistol, and proclaiming, “It’s time to get out of Dodge.”

White nationalists taken with this kind of scenario have long proposed creating white homelands or what have been called “Pioneer Little Europes.” The “PLE” movement encourages white nationalists to consolidate their presence in white neighborhoods, creating a communal atmosphere whose insularity will repel ethnic minorities. H. Michael Barrett, the originator of the Pioneer Little Europe idea, has engaged in discussions with national anarchists about the shape of his plan. For his part, Yeoman conceded that BANANAS’ National Autonomous Zones are similar to PLEs, but he claims BANANAS’ enclaves will be superior because residents will be selected far more carefully.

“A PLE has all the problems inherent with an open-door hippie commune in the 1970s, with the free-love mentality,” Yeoman said. “We’re what a PLE would be if it had higher standards.”

Strait is the Gate

The reality is that BANANAs’ philosophy is such that it has thus far drawn few followers and many enemies. Hard-liners on both the far left and the far right have expressed their disdain for national anarchism in no uncertain terms.

“I am totally dedicated to finding an equitable solution to the Jewish question. But I will be damned if I will bust my ass and sacrifice my individual desires so that a bunch of social leftists can co-opt the struggle,” said one poster at Stormfront.org, the world’s largest racist Web forum. “You want the flash of calling yourselves ‘anarchists’ without any of the philosophical baggage that accompanies such a claim. The name ‘anarchist’ has a pseudo revolutionary flair. You want that, but do not want to be linked with 19th century Jewish bomb tossers.”

“Our role with the white nationalist movement is a transformative one rather than symbiotic one,” Yeoman responded in an interview. “We have friends in the white nationalist movement but we have just as many enemies.”

Even some who are ideological BANANAS’ allies do not agree with its recruiting aims. One of the few other national anarchist groups in the United States, Idaho Falls, Idaho-based Folk and Faith, has no interest in recruiting “left-wing scum,” in the words of its leader, a former bonehead who uses the name “Joe Hadenuff.” (BANANAS’ magazine Hadenuff was named in his honor.)

In a forum post, Hadenuff made clear who he thinks potential recruits to the movement should be. “Try ex-boneheads that have all grown up and are raising families, try ex-reactionary racialists now moving on to folk-centered idealism, try ex-NS’ers [National Socialists] that just got worn out on ’88′ [neo-Nazi code for "Heil Hitler"] and Sieg Heiling cameras as a purported answer to our folk’s problems,” he wrote. (Last year, Hadenuff, a former soldier whose real name is Jeremy T. Wilcox, had part of an Army court martial verdict against him — for attending a Klan rally and posting racist material in 2000 — set aside.)

On most of the far left, BANANAS is even more despised.

One of the few non-BANANAS to express support for the philosophy is Keith Preston, who runs xttxckthxsytxm.com [[i]link altered
], an online gathering place for anarchists critical of far-left anarchism — a philosophy that Preston has sneeringly suggested is held by “throwaways from exurbia who think they are doing their part to bring down the System by renouncing deodorant, gorging themselves with tofu and calling their bourgeois parents Nazis for voting Republican.” Preston seeks to build tactical alliances with separatists of every stripe, including Christian theocrats, white nationalists and black separatists.

That attitude — the willingness to seek out recruits from other political sectors, many of them non-racist — is what has many observers worried about the potential for national anarchists and their small but growing movement.

“The National Anarchist idea has spread around the world over the Internet,” is how the Political Research Associates report puts it. “The United States has only a few websites, but the trend so far has been toward a steady increase.”

The movement, PRA concluded, could become the new face of the radical right.[/i]

SURGE IN FAR-RIGHT CRIMES: German Authorities Warn of Rise of ‘Anarchist’ Neo-Nazis, Der Spiegel, May 19, 2009. See also : Dortmund! May Day! Sieg Heil! (May 11, 2009).

New figures from Germany’s domestic intelligence agency show that the number of far-right crimes in Germany increased by 16 percent in 2008. Officials warn of the rise of Black Bloc-style “anarchist” neo-Nazis who actively seek violence at demonstrations.

Authorities in Germany have warned of a worrying new tendency within the far-right scene — the rise of violent “anarchist” neo-Nazis.

.

Heinz Fromm, the president of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, warned Tuesday of a “new phenomenon” within the far-right scene. Presenting the agency’s 2008 report in Berlin, he said that over the last two years a scene had emerged of “anarchist” neo-Nazis who dress similarly to the so-called Black Bloc of far-left anarchists and who deliberately seek violence at demonstrations. He put the number of so-called “right-wing anarchists” at between 400 and 500 people.

The report also reveals there were 19,894 far-right crimes reported in Germany in 2008, an increase of almost 16 percent over the previous year. Of those, 1,042 were acts of politically motivated violence, an increase of 6.3 percent over 2007. Most of the other crimes were propaganda offenses.

The number of people with extreme far-right views in Germany is estimated by the agency to be around 30,000 in 2008, a slight decline over 2007, when it was around 31,000. Of that number, around 9,500 are thought to be prepared to use violence. However the number of active neo-Nazis in Germany increased significantly in 2008, from 4,400 to 4,800.

According to the report, membership of the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD) declined slightly last year, from 7,200 to around 7,000 members. However the role of neo-Nazis within the party has grown, said Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble. “The neo-Nazi part of the spectrum is gaining greater influence within the NPD,” he said. The NPD, which has seats in two state parliaments, officially rejects violence and avoids explicit Nazi references.

Fromm rejected speculation that the NPD could be facing collapse, saying that the party’s current financial crisis would not lead to it being unable to operate “within the foreseeable future.” The party is in dire financial straits due to, among other things, a €1.27 million ($1.73 million) fine from the German government because of irregularities found in the party’s 2007 financial statements. The fine was originally set at €2.5 million but was later halved by a Berlin court.

Schäuble rejected proposals to ban the NPD, saying that the legal obstacles to such a ban were high and there was a significant risk that an attempt would fail. A previous attempt to ban the party in 2003 collapsed when it was revealed that many of the witnesses for the prosecution, including high-level members of the NPD, were in fact government informants who had penetrated the party.

Schäuble and Fromm also warned of the threat of Islamist terrorism in Germany. Although there has not been a successful Islamist terror attack in Germany to date, that was no reason for complacency, they said. “We are still in the cross-hairs of violent Islamists,” Schäuble warned, saying that the German military’s mission in Afghanistan is “a thorn in the side” of Islamists.

There are “significant” numbers of potential Islamist extremists in Germany, Schäuble said, including converts to Islam. Many Islamists have traveled from Germany to Pakistan to attend al-Qaida training camps and there have been messages from terrorist groups clearly targeting Germany in recent months. Certain Muslim groups in Germany, such as the Islamist Milli Görüs movement, want to introduce Sharia law in Germany, the agency warned in its report.

Schäuble also talked about the threat of far-left violence. Anti-military action was the focus among left-wing extremists, he said, adding that police officers were attacked with a “horrifying lack of restraint” during the May 1 riots in Berlin and elsewhere. The threat from left-wing extremists is clearly seen in the massive increase in arson attacks on vehicles in 2008, the report says.

That article looks familiar from about 7-10 days ago. Not pictures this time, but the word BANANAS jumps out.

Anon: Fascists Rally at Stella Natura Festival

Guest post by a concerned group of antifascists who are lovers of black metal and Nature

This coming September 20th-22nd, the music festival Stella Natura will be taking place in Tahoe National Forest in Northern California. This festival is a project of Adam Torruella of the Pesanta Urfolk label and distro, and it is the third year it will take place. A three day long music festival in the woods which serves as a meeting ground for people seeking to reconnect to the land and form community seems innocent enough. However when certain individuals seek to build this event on a foundation of white nationalist propaganda and promote an extremely racist agenda, it is a call to action for all who consider themselves opposed to white supremacy. The information following was compiled with the intent of exposing these individuals for who and what they are, no longer allowing them to exploit music scenes and spirituality as they seek to hide their true colors.

Asatru Folk Assembly (AFA) is the first listed sponsor for the festival. Asatru is a pagan spirituality focused on the revival of Norse gods and mythology, and it has unfortunately been filled with deep associations with various fascist organizations. The Southern Poverty Law Center have written a concise and highly recommended article on dubious figures within Asatru, in which they explain: “Odinism, which is closely related to Asatrú, was much favored in Nazi Germany. Its Nordic/Teutonic mythology was a bedrock belief for key Third Reich leaders, and it was an integral part of the initiation rites and cosmology of the elite Schutzstaffel (SS), which supervised Adolf Hitler's network of death camps. Decades later, Odinism also influenced George Lincoln Rockwell's American Nazi Party” (1). SPLC go on to describe how this spirituality has gained a great deal of popularity with violent white supremacists over the last few decades. The AFA was founded in the mid-1990s by Stephen McNallen out of concern that other Asatru organizations had lost focus on promoting the Asatru faith as inherently tied to the white race. At least one of AFA's leaders has ties to white supremacist organizations, claiming former standing as a state-level organizer for the SS Action Group and links to a violent neo-Nazi skinhead gang. “'I'm a white racist and proud of it," he told a reporter while posing in a Nazi uniform in 1992. ' (1)”. AFA was a sponsor of Stella Natura last year with McNallen appeared on stage to perform a ritual as a guest of the band Changes, and they remain a sponsor this year. (2)(3).

Some of McNallen's white supremacist ideologies can be seen in his theorizing on migration and border politics. In an article entitled 'Wotan vs. Tezcatlipoca: The Spiritual War for California and the Southwest', McNallen refers to the increasing Latin population of the border states of America as a “tide of cultural and demographic conquest” that white Americans must resist rather than “accept our marginalization quietly” (4). He voices that he feels the needs to “fight for my people and my culture against all odds”, and calls for white people to “stand by your kin and your culture” in states he describes as “overwhelmed with illegal immigrants”. He perceives this as a realm of spiritual war, in which Norse gods must conquer Mayan gods. He closes the article by arguing that “We must sink down roots in the soil, and insist on our right to be here... European-descended peoples, true to their ancestral ways, are here to stay. Our forebears fought and died to carve out this place in the world, and we will not give it up.”

In a 2010 piece by McNallen, entitled 'A down and dirty breakdown of the 'browning of America'', he decries the decreasing percentage of America's white population as a sign that “our political and cultural clout will evaporate to a thin wisp of what it is today”, and follows with the absurd claim that “European Americans face minority status, then marginalization, and eventually extinction” (5). He states that “Illegal immigration on the present scale is a form of conquest” an “invasion” that can be “stopped and even reversed almost at once” as it is “ being carried out by identifiable people and parties”. He lists clear political aims for his racist agenda:

“First, the border must be secured. Contrary to liberal opinion, this can be done. I will not analyze the mechanics of this task, but a brainstormed list of options would include diplomatic punishment of Mexico for its role in encouraging migration, sanctions against employers of illegal aliens to include mandatory prison time, a physical wall (built by illegal aliens from our prison system), high-tech surveillance devices, and imprisonment with hard labor for individuals violating our territorial sovereignty. Until we are willing to take these measures, we are not serious about closing the border. Second, it must be clear that no amnesty of illegal aliens, wholesale or piecemeal, in general or in particular, is acceptable. Third, all illegal aliens must be deported and denied legal entry at any time in the future. Because of the logistical complexities involved, deportation could take the form of a “phased withdrawal,” just as troops are pulled out of a war zone when a peace treaty is concluded. This mass deportation should be carried out as humanely as possible, but it absolutely must be done. Fourth, legal immigration must be reformed. We need a temporary moratorium on all immigration, followed by the dismantling of the Immigration Act of 1965 and a return to the previous system, which favored immigration from Europe.”

Brian Powell, a journalist with Media Matters, did an expose on a white nationalist conference organized by the National Policy Institute (6). The full article can be found in our sources and it is recommended to read through as it provides a good indication of the shapes this form of white nationalist fascism is currently taking. Major themes at this conference were the building of a white ethno-state through the forced migration of people of color, along with claims of white people's supposed inherent biological superiority. Upon meeting several members of the AFA during this conference, the reporter states: "...they expressed frustration with a culture and government that they feel ignores and looks down upon the interests of the white race.... They were relieved that they had finally found a place where they didn't have to 'feel out' the conversation before navigating it into the straits of white supremacy.“ In his response to the Media Matters article, Stephen McNallen merely states: "The AFA will not dictate to its members which meetings they are permitted to attend as private individuals. There are suggestions that we discipline them for the crime of being present in a room where extreme statements seem to have been made. We will not do this. There will be no exposure, no witch-hunt, no apologies, and no reprimands... men and women of European descent have exactly the same right to meet and to promote their collective interests as do any other group. To demonize them for doing this, when every other group is encouraged to do so, is to indulge in a vicious double standard. (7)".

To state that an overtly white supremacist conference which involved proposing plans for white-only ethnostates, modeled on South African apartheid, is a discussion of the "collective interests" of white people provides us with a clear perspective on what the founder of the AFA means when he discusses his vision of promoting the goals of the white race. There are no excuses offered and none should be made on his behalf. On the AFA's webpage, the second goal of the organization is stated to be "The preservation of the Peoples of the North (typified by the Scandinavian/Germanic and Celtic peoples), and the furtherance of their continued evolution... the survival and welfare of the Northern European peoples as a cultural and biological group is a religious imperative for the AFA." (8). This statement by McNallen provides a clear idea of what AFA's purpose and points of unity are intended to denote in the form of practical application sought by its founders. Anti-racists have been intervening in Stephen McNallen's spread of white nationalist propaganda since at least the 1990's, as evidenced by a rather amusing article from a Canadian Holocaust denier organization that hosted him for a lecture and were highly upset by the ARA response they received (9).

Blood Axis / Michael Moynihan

Allowing for the participation of the AFA and McNallen was not the only way in which Stella Natura has provided a platform for racists. Michael Moynihan played at Stella Natura last year with his band Blood Axis, a group well known for their use of Nazi iconography and their high standing in fascist music circles. This year he and his Blood Axis bandmate Annabell (Lee) Moynihan are appearing at the festival as 'special guests' of Ian Read's act, Fire and Ice. Moynihan is a well-known figure among anti-racists for his covert and intellectual ways of promoting fascist politics for decades. He has edited two of Italian fascist philosopher and elite Nazi academic Julius Evola's books for English-language publication, including Evola’s Men Among the Ruins: Post‐War Reflections of a Radical Traditionalist (10). In 1992, Moynihan collected and published the writings of National Socialist James Mason in the book 'SIEGE!' (11). Within these texts, Mason vehemently argues for the need for whites to gain power through armed struggle rather than political means, and applauds individuals for acts such as “Zebra Killings”(the murder of black and white 'mixed' couples). For a better idea of what this work includes, please see the enclosed chapter from Mason's book. Moynihan's aims in spreading fascist propaganda is clear in quotes of his such as: “I’m sick of people saying they’re ‘not political,’ as I think this is a cop‐out… If you’re going to espouse ‘fascist’ ideas, then I believe you have to accept some of the responsibility for their application in the real world; otherwise what is the point of espousing them in the first place?” (12).

Image
Extract from James Masons's Siege!

One of Moynihan's present areas of focus is the editing and publishing of the journal Tyr, which collects pieces on the topics of Germanic paganism and the history of northern European peoples (13). While it does not describe itself as a fascist publication, it reproduces white nationalist and far-right discourse and publishes authors with ties to various fascist and white supremacist currents. One of the original editors and ongoing contributors of Tyr is Colin Cleary, whose political perspective is rather concisely summed up in an article in which he states: "I regard Ásatrú and White Nationalism as so inseparably bound to one another that to espouse Ásatrú while rejecting White Nationalism is to involve oneself in a fatal contradiction (fatal, really, in more than just the logical sense)... Disraeli really was right: 'Race is everything. There is no other truth.' (14)". Joshua Buckley, another editor of Tyr, is a former member of the SS of America (15). He makes a living as one-half of a notoriously shady real estate gentrification project with a long-term business partner, who he is set to inherit the business from, named Sam Dickson. Dickson is an attorney who provided legal services to the Georgia KKK for decades and who sat on the board of The Barnes Review, an academic journal focused on promoting Holocaust denial. Dickson's largest public presence in the last decade has been as a guest speaker at multiple conferences that advocate for militant white nationalism, such as the conference covered by Media Matters.

Robert Taylor is one half of the band Changes, who will be playing for their third time at Stella Natura. The Changes duo returned to the music scene in 1996 after decades of silence thanks to the encouragement and efforts of Taylor's friend Michael Moynihan, who went on to produce and release their next album (16). Robert Taylor describes himself as a “herald... one of the three founders of the [Asatru] movement” within North America, along with Steven McNallen. He describes Asatru as “a religion that is suited for Indo-Europeans because it contains and constitutes all the main features and spirit of how most of us feel inside” (17). Taylor was a founder of the Asatru Alliance along with former American Nazi party member Michael (Valgard) Murray and has a long history of allying with Stephen McNallen in pagan organizing (16). Taylor has a long history of involvement within the radical right and white separatist circles. In an interview with infamous 'national anarchist' and white supremacist political organizer Troy Southgate (39),Taylor outlines his youth involvement in “the most feared white street gang in Chicago at that time” and states that he joined as a “vehicle for fighting” because he “loved the exhilaration of combat”, and that he “never joined gangs so much for the camaraderie or as a group security thing” (16). He states that this environment “certainly brought grassroots social problems into sharp focus” and that “racial tensions flared up frequently”. He describes his participation in a white riot in which thousands of white people mobbed up against a black family that had just moved into the neighborhood he lived in. This mob chanted curses, bombarded the black family's home with bricks, tried to break down the door and then proceeded to fight with the police upon their arrival. He described the experience of being in this mob as “like a minuet movement. A dance of rage”. Taylor recounts that these riots went on for four nights, during which “dummies stuffed with rags and painted with black faces were hung from lamp posts and set ablaze in effigy” and city buses with black drivers were attacked with large chunks of concrete dropped from bridges. He claims that he's sure of the fact that the media did not report on the riots because it would have attracted “people from far and wide to join the mob and riot”. He also outlines a group he organized with other white youth that committed such disgusting acts as responding to black students being brought into a school in his neighborhood by holding a confrontational demonstration at the school which these students were being transferred from, in a black community.

Taylor speaks at length of his involvement with a 1960s right wing paramilitary organization named 'the Minutemen', in which he quickly moved through the ranks from being the principal organizer in the Chicago area to holding the position of national Director of Intelligence, and then becoming national spokesperson while also being the sole editor of their magazine. He describes the activities of the Minutemen as mainly consisting of: infiltrating leftist and communist groups in order to bring police violence against them or sabotaging their activities in other ways, identifying their members, and forming fake anti-war groups to give leftists a bad name in the press. He was a member of a special subgroup that was set up within the organization called the Defence Survival Force, which consisted of about 50-60 people trained in survival skills, killing, expropriation, explosives knowledge and special operational skills. They operated underground and rendezvoused in an organized way to meet in safe-houses and make claymore mines and pipe grenades. He outlines how this group slowly fell apart due to legal matters and how once their resources had dwindled enough and some members were facing incarceration, he used his position as national spokesperson to advise Minutemen groups across the US to organize as local militias rather than as a federation. In Taylor's own words, “The legacy of the Minutemen continues on now in various factions of the revolutionary right. We laid the groundwork, provided the basic concepts and more or less pioneered that movement. It brought a new sophistication of tactics and strategy to the Right” (18).

In 2006, Taylor defends his participation in the race riots by saying that for white working class people, “their job... their home, car and family was about all they had in the world” and that once black families began to move into neighborhoods dominated by white people, these were all threatened (17). He went on to claim that “it was no secret that once blacks predominated in an area, the crime rate would soar and the streets would become dangerous to walk. (17)” Taylor espouses strong feelings about disseminating this viewpoint based on the perception that “white working class ethnics seldom have a spokesman or anyone who writes or speaks on their behalf. They are simply the dispossessed majority”. It is also very interesting to note that in this later interview, Taylor attempts to justify his participation in this riot, yet offers up no toned-down explanation of his prolonged and active organizing within the Minutemen. Taylor has gone on record stating that he sees the infamous and long-running white supremacist organization Aryan Nations and similar groups as representing “love and loyalty to one's race as opposed to geographical boundaries” (17).

Fire And Ice, one of the headliners of Stella Natura, is a band founded and fronted by Ian Read. Read is well known for his work with bands Current 93, Sol Invictis, and Death in June, whom he provided vocals for in their rendition of 'Horst Wessel Lied', the anthem of the German National Socialists on the Brown Book album (banned in Germany for supporting fascism) (19). He also played with the openly neo-nazi group Above the Ruins, whose name is derived from the writings of Evola and who contributed to the National Front's benefit album No Surrender Vol 1, alongside bands such as Screwdriver(20)(21). Read has also led militant security teams for both Holocaust denier and anti-Semite Michele Renouf and editor of far-right magazine Michael Walker (22). Michael Walker was one of the individuals who safe-housed a notorious Italian fascist, on the run from the police after having a large quantity of explosives and weapons found in his organization's office (23) (24). He was also exposed as an organizer of the Iona organization's Nazi street fighters in the 1997 article 'Rocking for Satan' by the antifascist Magazine Searchlight (22). One of Read's closest collaborators has been Tony Wakeford (Death in June, Sol Invictis, Above the Ruins), a member of the National Front who has also been a key figure within occult-fascist music (20). Wakeford's work within Above the Ruins and overt Nazism was too much for Death in June's Douglas Pierce, eventually causing Wakeford to split from the group and form Sol Invictis with Read (22). He was also heavily involved with Read in the IONA fascist group (22). Ian Read was also a member of the band While Angels Watch, which worked with British fascist advocate and organizer Troy Southgate (20).

Die Weisse Rose

Die Weisse Rose is another band slated to play at Stella Natura. This Danish band is the project of Thomas Bøjden and whichever friends he asks to join him in performances (25). These friends include people such as Gerhard Petak, the man who records his music as Allerseelen. Petak has released tribute albums to the Iron Guard, a profoundly violent Romanian fascist occultist party guilty of such horrific massacres that the Nazis had to urge them to practice restraint (10) (26). Petak celebrates and claims great influence from Evola, as well as Karl Maria Wiligut and the Ahnenerbe (the occultist wing of the Third Reich), and bases a large part of his music and imagery in direct references to the Nazi regime (10). Another of Bøjden's guest collaborators was Marco Deplano of Italian fascist band Foresta di Ferro, who have contributed songs to tribute albums for the leader of the Iron Guard (26). Bøjden has performed as a guest with Foresto di Ferro, Allerseelen and Blood Axis (27). About his collaborations with these fascist musicians, Bøjden states that they are “musicians that I truly admire and respect for their individual projects and their contribution to Die Weisse Rose" (25). Die Weisse Rose utilize sound collages, videos, and the wearing of Nazi Brownshirt uniforms in their performances, which Bøjden claims is merely for artistic purposes. Die Weisse Rose were selected by Douglas Pierce to accompany Death in June's farewell tour in 2012 and Bøjden describes Douglas Pierce as “a very wonderful and very inspiring person”, stating that Death in June had been formative in every aspect of his life for decades (25). Included is an image of Bøjden posing affectionately with Tony Wakeford.

Image
Tony Wakeford and Thomas Bøjden

Another band on Stella Natura's 2013 lineup is Waldteufel, the project of Markus Wolff. Wolff was a founding member of Blood Axis and has collaborated with Michael Moynihan frequently (28) (10). Wolff has contributed writings on nationalist German authors and paganism to publication such as Tyr, and also helped Moynihan release English editions of Evola's works (10). He is the current staff editor and contributing artist and writer for Hex magazine, another sponsor of Stella Natura (29). Hex magazine has published works by Gerhard Petak in several issues, and promoted Allerseelen's recent West Coast tour ( 10), with Waldteufel playing a date on this tour. Hell and Dispirit, two other band appearing at Stella Natura, also played on the same tour despite agitation and information spread by the Rose City Antifa and actions against their shows by antifascists in Europe (30).

Yet another dubious act on Stella Natura's lineup for 2013 is Of the Wand and the Moon, the one-man project of Kim Larsen, which has issued a split album with Ian Read and Tony Wakeford's Sol Invictus (31). OTWATM also appeared on a compilation entitled 'Looking for Europe', which bears an iron cross on the cover and features essentially every high profile fascist or fascist sympathizer band in the neofolk scene, such as Blood Axis, Boyd Rice/ NON, Allerseelen, Changes and Death in June (32). Kim Larsen has been criticized by German antifa groups for posing for photos (33) wearing the Lebensrune, a Norse symbol that was used during the Nazi regime in place of the 'date of birth' label on paperwork. It was also the symbol of the SS Lebensborn and modern neo-Nazi organizations such as the German Heathens' Front (34). The German Heathens' Front is a racialist Asatru organization formed by a well-known neo-Nazi and is infamous for their virulent anti-Semitism and allegiance to the ideas of David Lane (35). This is not to claim that the use and revival of runes is inherently problematic, but merely that to wear a rune that has been so deeply associated with various fascist organizations without any critique or anti-fascist analysis is a heavily loaded action. In an interview with an online fanzine, Larsen names his biggest musical influences as “Death in June, but also bands as NON, Der Blutharsch, Current 93, Fire and Ice, Blood Axis etc.”, all bands that have racist tendencies and associations (36). In another interview in which he was asked the same question, he lists the same bands but adds Sol Invictus to the list (37). Larsen has also appeared as a guest in Die Weisse Rose's performances (25).

It is necessary to acknowledge that while many Asatru practitioners or fans of neofolk/industrial/black metal are well-intentioned music fans, many others involved in these scenes are actively promoting fascist ideas in order to normalize these tendencies. As outlined in Anton Shekhovstov's brilliant essay on the topic, which is highly recommended when approaching this subject,(38) this course is charted out within the post-WWII writings of Alain de Benoist and Julius Evola. These authors argued for fascists to retreat from active politics into the realm of culture until the time was right to begin recruiting for future fascist political movements. This form of 'metapolitical' fascism manifests in subcultural scenes focused on music or spirituality with their accompanying record labels, distros and spiritual organizations, as well as through networks of journals, publishing houses, conferences and think tanks. Neofolk as a musical subculture has always held an intellectual and elitist attitude that is eager to feign disassociation with more overt white supremacists, but this must be seen as what it is: part of a coherent and deliberate strategy to disseminate their unpopular ideas without risking immediate anti-fascist responses. The presence of fascists and white nationalists at Stella Natura is not an accident, but a planned infiltration; a co-opting of spirituality, heritage and music to suit their personal agenda. Opposition to this must come from within the scenes they seek to convert, and from the potential recruits they hope to gain.

Statement on the situation in Ukraine - Autonomous Workers Union

Image

Ukrainian anarchists give their take on developments in Ukraine as the uprising continues and the death toll rockets.

In the event of the Opposition’s victory life would be far from perfect as well. Although fascists form the minority of the protesters, they are quite active and are not the sharpest tools in the shed. A few days of truce in mid-February lead to conflicts between the rightist groups, resulting in several pointless and violent confrontations, as well as attacks on ideological ‘heretics.’

There's been a lot of talk of 'anarchists' recently, but in a rather one-sided fashion.

It's worth pointing out that, in addition to the Right portraying themselves as anarchists, those from the Left can also do this, and both can be equally bogus. So the repetition of the label alone is not sufficient to define a person's stance.

A problem arises when an ideology makes itself almost invisible due to achieving an intellectual hegemony, and arguably, the Left has done this over the last few decades, making itself appear to be the status quo. Therefore a closer look needs to be taken sometimes

Fascists in Greece: From the streets into parliament and back

Image

Article by the Wildcat collective from Germany on class relations behind collaboration between fascists and Greek state.

Who do the fascists address?

The fascists don't try to convince wider parts of society of their 'innovative' political proposals, their arguments or cultural values. They neither have an attractive ideology, nor did Golden Dawn set up charity structures, like, for example, Hamas. Their public food distribution - obviously only to 'Greek' people - or their announcement to organise child nurseries only for Greeks were merely symbolic actions. Other announcements, such as the restrictions of migrant children in nurseries, were ridiculous and atrocious and triggered immediate resistance by teachers' associations and trade unions. When the fascists wanted to donate blood 'only to Greeks' the hospital nurses' union and the doctors' associations immediately intervened. Such positions provoked the outrage of democratic 'citizens'.

The rise of the fascists is explained far more by the common interests with the ruling class and a section of the small business class and landowners, those e.g that rent out their flats to migrants or exploit their labour. Those that exploit illegal labour and discipline with violence have common interests with the mafia structures. These often offer protection services. Physical assaults on striking agricultural labourers or single migrant waged-workers also took place in the 'golden years', they've just increased sharply during the crisis. Now you need thugs to deal with tenants who are defaulting on their rent or owe debts or to evict a flat. Bosses are increasingly getting help from fascists or mafia-types to deal with conflicts with their workers e.g. due to outstanding wages. (This was the case with the strawberry pickers in Manolada.) Mafia control of the illegal and migrant sectors is slowly spreading out to the whole labour market and today, threatens the whole class.

The fascists are watchdogs

In opinion polls before the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, support for Golden Dawn was at around 12%, and growing. Afterwards that fell for a short time to around 6-7% and since then it's climbed again to around 10% - even though in the meantime, the media have turned against them. That's neither a reason for panic or reassurance. The fascists have a limited election potential and can't go beyond their state-given function. But there exactly lies their danger: the systemic role of fascists aims to spread fear and discipline amongst the working class. They could also be used for a 'strategy of tension.'

There are lots of voters, members and active sympathisers of Golden Dawn in the police force. In the last elections up to 50% of the cops in Athens voted for the fascists. Today's cops were shaped by the social development of the 90s, they were the leading organs of the brutal illegalisation of migrant labour. In addition to a shared ideology, there's the fact of a long term collaboration. The police have known the paramilitary fascist groups for a long time through their common attacks against demonstrations.

The extent to which the upper echelons of the police were involved with the fascists was revealed after the murder of Pavlos and the subsequent legal repression: some regional police chiefs were arrested, the two highest level police officials in the country had to resign, a further eight high-up officials were demoted, which included the heads of 'Special Branch', 'Organised Crime' and 'Explosives'.

But the winds had already changed prior to the murder. The international press had condemned the racist violence in Greece. The US Foreign Minister gave out a travel warning because of the neo-Nazi threat. In October 2012 CNN reported the violence against Africans in Athens and the 15 anti-fascists that were arrested and tortured by the cops. Racist police violence in particular was problematised even more: a backpacker from South Korea was beaten up by a street patrol in Athens and racially abused; a tourist from the Netherlands was beaten up in Chania and arrested; a professor from India, a guest of the economics university in Athens, was arrested in front of the university building because he didn't have his passport on him. The respective ambassadors wrote letters of protest, and the Greek government came under pressure.

Since winter 2012, the Greek media have also increasingly reported the 'bad' sides of Golden Dawn: photos showing Nazi salutes at demonstrations, photos of their tattoos and National Socialist symbols etc. became more frequent. For the first time, newspapers close to the government also published shallow articles about possible criminal activities of the party or some of its members. The Greek EU Presidency in 2014 is not supposed to be disturbed by fascists and during the European and local elections in May 2014 the fascists are not supposed to be too successful.

Both are classic protest elections. Disappointed New Democracy voters could vote these nationalist lumpen-figures with their Nazi tattoos and their offensive, paranoid view into the European parliament. In the second round of mayoral elections in Athens, a Golden Dawn candidate could stand against the Syriza candidate. Can a metropolitan tourist city like Athens have an extreme-right mayor, who, amongst other things, beat up a female MP from KKE (Communist Party of Greece) live on TV? These discussions also lead to some reactions by the police, who up until now had not reacted. Now, every now and again, a fascist is arrested - but there still aren't any further consequences.

State anti-fascism

After the murder of Pavlos Fyssas the state began to actively oppose Golden Dawn and portray themselves as the better 'anti-fascists'. It's no surprise that the state should act against the fascists who are the 'political children' of the Greek state of emergency - what was initially surprising was the reason for the state's reaction being the murder of a left-wing rapper. Between January 2012 and April 2013 four people were murdered in racially motivated attacks and over 135 people were injured. That didn't trigger any state and media anti-fascist response. But the murder of Pavlos happened around the same time as two other important events.

Attack on the institutional left: First there was an organised attack by Golden Dawn on the night of the 12th of September 2013 in the port area of Perama. About 50 people with truncheons went to attack KKE and PAME members who were flyposting close to the shipyard, amongst whom was also the chairperson of the metal workers union. Perama is an area with very high unemployment and a stronghold of the KKE and their union, PAME. The open attack on a civil, parliamentary party like the KKE shows how much Golden Dawn over-estimated their strength.

Attack on the institutional right: On the 15th September Golden Dawn members and parliamentary members marched to the yearly rally for the victims of the civil war (1946-49) and disturbed it. The event is an important memorial event for the political right in Greece. When the mayor of New Democracy from Meligala, [2] was reading out his speech, the fascists violently insulted him and took over the event. After that the mayor left the rally with other local dignitaries. The police didn't intervene. It was a demonstration of power for the Nazis.

The murder of Pavlos Fyassas happened on the 17th September on a busy main street in the suburb of Keratsini near Piraeus. Here, police were also present and didn't intervene. It was a targeted and coordinated attack.

With the attack on KKE and the demonstration of strength on the memorial day celebrated by the traditional right, Golden Dawn showed that they now saw themselves as a real party, a party which claims hegemony on the political right and which openly attacks their enemies. The murder showed that the fascists felt invincible. Lots of cadres mistook the space which was given to them by the state institutions as an expression of their own strength and openly flaunted their arrogance and violence. From the point of view of the state, the danger of the fascists getting out of control wasn't just confined to the streets.

On the 22nd October parliament stopped the state financing of Golden Dawn. All parties were in agreement to this, including Syriza. Currently the General Secretary Michaloliakos, some parliamentary members and other high-ranking members are in jail. The main charge against them was 'building a criminal organisation', because Golden Dawn had recently more intensively tried to capture sectors of organised (and state controlled) crime. The ruling right in the form of New Democracy had pushed through an extremely neoliberal agenda, they no longer needed a fascist party as justification to move even further to the right. So they attacked Golden Dawn, which they originally built up themselves. And there are also alternatives for the 'deep state' in the meantime in case it should need parliamentary reserves or militant street structures against a possible movement from below. There's a lot of potential to use eligible people through the police, military, security firms, organised criminals and within the right-wing scene.

Confronting the fear!

Through its 'new' politics, the state is becoming stronger and better prepared to implement their kind of security policy, public order and new austerity measures. It's not only society in general affected by the crisis who have internalised the fear and terror, but also politicised groups and people. The fundamental insecurity has recently extended even further. In order to be able to proceed against state-mediated confusion and despair, we should first of all make clear the real political meaning of the events: the political rise of the fascists to parliamentary power and their (short-term?) dip is only a part of state armament and the growing power of the mafia structure. The fascists are overseen and dependent on the state for their financing as well as their illegal transactions being tolerated. The political dominance of these common material interests becomes apparent in today's migration politics, new refugee camps, drowned migrants and general social polarisation!

State anti-fascism protects the para-state structures within the army and police. Sooner or later it will turn against working class-oriented projects and struggles. There are already signs of this happening. The media portray the anti-fascist struggle on the streets as identitarian conflicts between the anti-authoritarian scene and the neo-Nazis. Left analyses reduce the explanation of the increasing power of the Greek fascists to that fact that the confusion and impoverishment of people pushed them into the hands of the fascists. They also insinuate that the poor and uneducated are more likely to become fascists and by implication, that those that are relatively rich and educated, and who are less affected by the crisis would turn towards the left. By advocating this opinion, one comes to the dangerous conclusion that anti-fascism is the task of a state-financed left. The (self) limitation of anti-fascist struggles to identitarian politics in the framework of a left-radical scene quickly leads to marginalisation, which opens the door to police repression and media defamation. That's even more the case for individual terrorist actions, like the shooting of three Nazis in front of a local Golden Dawn office, in which two of them died. Regardless of who the perpetrators were and their motives, this action was useful only to the cops and the repression-apparatus. Left-wing as well as pacifist ideas that ultimately hope that the constitutional state will take on the fascists are naive. They have become trapped by the 'extremism doctrine' of the state.

Nowadays, proletarian anti-fascist violence in any case is necessary, especially in those places where left-wing activists or even just the presence of left-wingers, are hindered or threatened by fascists. We can't allow the fascists the monopoly on violence.

Fascist and police attacks on migrants is an attack on the whole working class. Therefore, the struggle against anti-fascist structures is not just a humanitarian question, but also a class question. Anti-fascism must be a part of the wider class struggle. The class character of the crisis must become just as clear as the fundamental refusal of national unity to 'rescue the homeland'.

This type of anti-fascism also offers new possibilities, to establish contacts, and tackle individualisation and the atmosphere of crisis. Multinational friendship circles of youth and school students, new workers under new conditions, the disappointed left... can come together. The potential for such a cooperation shows up in the positive reactions to anti-fascist initiatives and street actions that are supported (verbally at least) by not directly involved by-standers. The building up of mutual confidence strengthens the feeling of collective power. Only the unity of the unemployed, workers and the poor can reclaim the public sphere and get rid of the everyday fear.

Anti-fascism is class struggle!

Re: A New Europe: Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, Nation-State

This post is intended as a little addendum to my previous post on 'anti-fascist' activity in cyberspace (previous one repeated for continuity)

------------------------------
On encountering the far right on the BDF, my attitudes and outlook changed as I went along ie I didn't have a thought out strategy on starting there and initially was just on a fact finding mission. I also saw the UK far right as being far more monolithic that it turned out to be, in other words, the view of your average anti-fascist who has only ever encountered them in polarised and hostile situations, and from which little new is taken away.

Even though I entered that arena with certain expectation, I'm going to give an overview from hindsight, because I learned a fair bit there in the end. My fondness for the number 3 means I naturally feel inclined to come up with 3 points, so if you are intending to tackle the far right in cyberspace the I would advise to:

1) Find a forum where the far right mingle with ordinary folks (BDF was perfect for this), because here you are likely to find allies (not strict antis who are often unsubtle and tend to get in the way) and see different flavours of the right too, like my 'British Nationalism vs White Nationalism' mentioned earlier. Forget one dimensional freakshows like Stormfront unless you are a masochist and want a farily swift exit with nothing achieved.

2) Have a persona where you can be yourself. This might be difficult for the allergic antis, but they're not likely to last long anyway. If you want to get proper 'bites', and actually learn stuff, you are going to be there for the long haul (well over a year, I was there four years). If you get cornered, tell them you are an anarchist, of course, it helps if you already are one, so my problem was lessened in this respect.

3) Be prepared to be intellectually challenged and hear some stuff that will affect you emotionally. this is not like standing on the street slinging poo from a safe distance (ie most AF activity), this gets up close and inside your head. If you are overconfident that these people are mere knuckledraggers and that you will have an easy ride, forget it, they will come from emotional, intellectual and personal angles and not play fair. Be cool, don't get flustered, and don't engage in to much speculation, deal with what they write, not with what you think they mean.

This last sentence is fairly good forum practice in general, but especially in a hostile environment. I'm going to leave it at three points now, but may have some more to add next time...

if one is entering a potentially hostile environment it helps to initially define one's attitude and status, this may be subject to change, but even so, it's good to understand your initial stance.
It actually arises from three points I came up with on here, which came about when I was told (15 times or more) that this is an 'anti fascist' board.

I suggested that 'non-fascist' might be a more accurate label as the subject is poorly attended to in a general sense (I can sort of understand why that is). I made the distinction because I regard anti-fascism to be an activity and not merely an attitude or status.
In other words, regarding one's stance.... are you an anti-fascist, or a non fascist?

I suggested that in order to become an'anti-fascist' then those claiming this should at least adopt a procedure:

1) Sustaining an environment where these issues can be discussed rationally (ie, no heated repetitive arguments and conversely, protracted silences)

2) Discovering as conclusively as possible who is and who isn't a fascist (if anyone is, ie no baseless accusations)

3) Proceeding to tackle those who have been identified as the former above, and moving towards a resolution.

Number one is the really important one here, without that nothing else happens. Non-fascism is still good though, and possibly more realistic. ATM, this label applies more accurately to me, and I'm content with that.

Next time I will be firmly back in the realm of my personal experiences on the BDF. This has been a slight detour...
