Beatriz Preciado

Testo Junkie: Sex, Drugs, and Biopolitics

I live in a world where many things I thought impossible are possible.

—Guillaume Dustan, Dans ma chambre (1996)

The day of your death I put a 50-mg dose of Testogel on my skin, so that I can begin to write this book. The carbon chains, O-H3, C-H3, C-OH, gradually penetrate my epidermis and travel through the deep layers of my skin until they reach the blood vessels, nerve endings, glands. I’m not taking testosterone to change myself into a man, nor as a physical strategy of transsexualism; I take it to foil what society wanted to make of me, so that I can write, fuck, feel a form of pleasure that is post-pornographic, add a molecular prostheses to my low-tech transgendered identity composed of dildos, texts, and moving images; I do it to avenge your death.

I spread the gel over my shoulders. First instant: the feeling of a light slap on the skin. The feeling changes into one of coldness before it disappears. Then nothing for a day or two. Nothing. Waiting. Then an extraordinary lucidity settles in gradually, accompanied by an explosion of the desire to fuck, walk, go out everywhere in the city. This is the climax in which the spiritual force of the testosterone mixing with my blood takes the fore. Absolutely all the unpleasant sensations disappear. Unlike speed, the movement going on inside has nothing to do with agitation, noise. It’s simply the feeling of being in perfect harmony with the rhythm of the city. Unlike coke, there is no distortion in the perception of self, no logorrhea nor any feeling of superiority. Nothing but the feeling of strength reflecting the increased capacity of my muscles, my brain. My body is present to itself. Unlike speed and coke, there is no immediate come down. A few days go by, and the movement inside calms, but the feeling of strength, like a pyramid revealed by a sandstorm, remains.

How can I explain what is happening to me? What can I do about my desire for transformation? What can I do about all the years I defined myself as a feminist? What kind of feminist am I today? A feminist hooked on testosterone, or a transgendered body hooked on feminism? I have no other alternative but to revise my classics, to subject those theories to the shock that was provoked in me by the practice of taking testosterone. To accept the fact that the change happening in me is the metamorphosis of an era.

The changes within neoliberalism that we are witnessing are characterized not only by the transformation of “gender,” “sex,” “sexuality,” “sexual identity,” and “pleasure” into objects of the political management of living, but also by the fact that this management itself is carried out through the new dynamics of advanced techno-capitalism, global media, and biotechnologies. We are being confronted with a new type of hot, psychotropic punk capitalism. These recent transformations are imposing an ensemble of new micro-prosthetic mechanisms of control of subjectivity by means of biomolecular and multimedia technical protocols. Our world economy is dependent upon the production and circulation of hundreds of tons of synthetic steroids, on the global diffusion of a flood of pornographic images, on the elaboration and distribution of new varieties of synthetic legal and illegal psychotropic drugs (e.g., enaltestovis, Special K., Viagra, speed, crystal, Prozac, ecstasy, poppers, heroin, Prilosec), on the flood of signs and circuits of the digital transmission of information, on the extension of a form of diffuse urban architecture to the entire planet in which megacities of misery are knotted into high concentrations of sex-capital.

In order to distinguish this new capitalism from the nineteenth century disciplinary regime, I shall call “pharmacopornographic capitalism” this new regime of the production of sex and sexual subjectivity.

After World War II, the somatopolitical context of the production of subjectivity seems dominated by a series of new technologies of the body (which include biotechnology, surgery, endocrinology, and so forth) and representation (photography, cinema, television, cybernetics, videogames, and so forth) that infiltrate and penetrate daily life like never before. These are biomolecular, digital, and broadband data transmission technologies. The invention of the notion of gender in the 1950s as a clinical technique of sexual reassignment, and the commercialization of the Pill as a contraceptive technique, characterized the shift from discipline to pharmacopornographic control. This is the age of soft, feather-weight, viscous, gelatinous technologies that can be injected, inhaled—“incorporated.” The testosterone that I use belongs to these new gelatinous biopolitical technologies.

When I take a dose of testosterone in gel form or inject it in liquid form, what I’m actually giving myself is a chain of political signifiers that have been materialized in order to acquire the form of a molecule that can be absorbed by my body. I’m not only taking the hormone, the molecule, but also the concept of a hormone, a series of signs, texts, and discourses, the process through which the hormone came to be synthesized, the technical sequences that produce it in the laboratory. I inject a crystalline, oil-soluble steroid carbon chain of molecules, and with it a fragment of the history of modernity. I administer to myself a series of economic transactions, a collection of pharmaceutical decisions, clinical tests, focus groups, and business management techniques. I connect to a baroque network of exchange and to economic and political flow-chains for the patenting of the living. I am linked by T to electricity, to genetic research projects, to mega-urbanization, to the destruction of forests and the biosphere, to pharmaceutical exploitation of living species, to Dolly the cloned sheep, to the advance of the Ebola virus, to HIV mutation, to antipersonnel mines and the broadband transmission of information. In this way, I become one of the somatic connectives that make possible the circulation of power, desire, release, submission, capital, rubbish, and rebellion.

As a body—and this is the only important thing about being a subject-body, a techno-living system—I’m the platform that makes possible the materialization of political imagination. I am my own guinea pig for an experiment on the effects of intentionally increasing the level of testosterone in the body of a bio-female. Instantly, the testosterone turns me into something radically different than a cis-female. Even when the changes generated by this molecule are socially imperceptible. The lab rat is becoming human. The human being is becoming a rodent. And, as for me: neither testo-girl nor techno-boy. I am just a port of insertion for C19H28O2. I’m both the terminal of one of the apparatuses of neoliberal governmentality and the vanishing point through which escapes the will to control of the system. I’m the molecule and the State, and I’m the laboratory rat and the scientific subject that conducts the research; I’m the residue of a biochemical process. I am the future common artificial ancestor for the elaboration of new species in the perpetually random process of mutation and genetic drift. I am T.

I do not want the female gender that has been assigned to me at birth. Neither do I want the male gender that transsexual medicine can furnish and that the State will award me if I behave in the right way. I don’t want any of it. I am a copyleft biopolitical agent that considers sex hormones free and open biocodes, whose use shouldn’t be regulated by the State commandeered by pharmaceutical companies.

The consumption of testosterone, like that of estrogen and progesterone in the case of the Pill, does not depend upon any ideal constructions of gender that would come to influence the way we act and think. We are confronted directly by the production of the materiality of gender. Everything is a matter of doses, of melting and crystallization points, of the rotary power of the molecule, of regularity, of milligrams, of the form and mode of administration, of habit, of praxis. What is happening to me could be described in terms of a “molecular revolution.” In detailing this concept in order to refer to the revolt of May ’68, Félix Guattari certainly was not thinking of cis-females who self-administer testosterone. On the other hand, he was attentive to structural modifications generated by micropolitical changes such as the consumption of drugs, changes in perception, in sexual conducts, in the invention of new languages. It is a question of becomings, of multiplicities. In such a context, “molecular revolution” could point to a kind of political homeopathy of gender. It’s not a matter of going from woman to man, from man to woman, but of contaminating the molecular bases of the production of sexual difference, with the understanding that these two states of being, male and female, only exist as “biopolitical fictions,” as somatic effects of the technical process of normalization. It’s a matter of intervening intentionally in this process of production in order to end up with viable forms of incorporated gender, to produce a new sexual and affective platform that is neither male nor female in the pharmacopornographic sense of these terms, which would make possible the transformation of the species. T is only a threshold, a molecular door, a becoming between multiplicities.

Excerpted from: Donna Haraway, "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century," in Simians, Cyborgs and Women: The Reinvention of Nature (New York; Routledge, 1991), pp.149-181.

AN IRONIC DREAM OF A COMMON LANGUAGE FOR WOMEN IN THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT

A cyborg is a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction. Social reality is lived social relations, our most important political construction, a world-changing fiction. The international women's movements have constructed 'women's experience', as well as uncovered or discovered this crucial collective object. This experience is a fiction and fact of the most crucial, political kind. Liberation rests on the construction of the consciousness, the imaginative apprehension, of oppression, and so of possibility. The cyborg is a matter of fiction and lived experience that changes what counts as women's experience in the late twentieth century. This is a struggle over life and death, but the boundary between science fiction and social reality is an optical illusion.

Contemporary science fiction is full of cyborgs - creatures simultaneously animal and machine, who populate worlds ambiguously natural and crafted.

Modern medicine is also full of cyborgs, of couplings between organism and machine, each conceived as coded devices, in an intimacy and with a power that was not generated in the history of sexuality. Cyborg 'sex' restores some of the lovely replicative baroque of ferns and invertebrates (such nice organic prophylactics against heterosexism). Cyborg replication is uncoupled from organic reproduction. Modern production seems like a dream of cyborg colonization work, a dream that makes the nightmare of Taylorism seem idyllic. And modern war is a cyborg orgy, coded by C3I, command-control-communication-intelligence, an $84 billion item in 1984'sUS defence budget. I am making an argument for the cyborg as a fiction mapping our social and bodily reality and as an imaginative resource suggesting some very fruitful couplings. Michael Foucault's biopolitics is a flaccid premonition of cyborg politics, a very open field.

By the late twentieth century, our time, a mythic time, we are all chimeras, theorized and fabricated hybrids of machine and organism; in short, we are cyborgs. Ths cyborg is our ontology; it gives us our politics. The cyborg is a condensed image of both imagination and material reality, the two joined centres structuring any possibility of historical transformation. In the traditions of 'Western' science and politics--the tradition of racist, male-dominant capitalism; the tradition of progress; the tradition of the appropriation of nature as resource for the productions of culture; the tradition of reproduction of the self from the reflections of the other - the relation between organism and machine has been a border war. The stakes in the border war have been the territories of production, reproduction, and imagination. This chapter is an argument for pleasure in the confusion of boundaries and for responsibility in their construction. It is also an effort to contribute to socialist-feminist culture and theory in a postmodernist, non-naturalist mode and in the utopian tradition of imagining a world without gender, which is perhaps a world without genesis, but maybe also a world without end. The cyborg incarnation is outside salvation history. Nor does it mark time on an oedipal calendar, attempting to heal the terrible cleavages of gender in an oral symbiotic utopia or post-oedipal apocalypse.

See in particular Chapter 14 (Skinner's statement on overlap of high level chemists/dealers with Government), all of Chapter 19, and in Part 2 (Todd's Letters from Prison)- Chapter 2 (The Chemistry Letters), Todd's responses to Krystle's questions about the Brotherhood:

Entheogenic Eyes – Gwyllm

A Glass Of Ayahuasca

in my hotel room overlooking Desamparados’ Clanging Clock,
with the french balcony doors closed, and luminescent fixture out
“my room took on a near eastern aspect” that is I was reminded of Burroughs
with heart beating—and the blue wall of Polynesian Whorehouse, and
mirror framed in black as if in Black Bamboo-and wooden slated floor
and I in my bed, waiting, and slowly drifting away
but still thinking in my body till my body turned to passive wood
and my soul rocked back & forth preparing to slide out on eternal journey
backwards from my head in the dark
An hour, realizing the possible change in consciousness
that the Soul is independent of the body and its death
and that the Soul is not Me, it is the wholly other “whisper of consciousness”
from Above, Beyond, Afuera—
till I realize it existed in all its splendor in the Ideal or Imaginary
Toward which the me will travel when the body goes to the sands of Chancay
And at last, lying in bed covered my body with a splendid robe of
indian manycolors wool,
I gazed up at the grey gate of Heaven with a foreign eye
and yelled in my mind “Open up, for I am the Prince of eternity
come back to myself after a long journey in chaos,
open the Door of Heaven, My Soul, for I have come back to claim
my Ancient House
Let the Servants come forth to Welcome me and let Silent Harp make music
and bring my apparel of Rainbow and Star show me my shoes of Light and
my Pants of the Universe
Spread forth my meal of myriad lives, My Soul, and Show up thy
Face of Welcome
For I am the one who has dwelled in the secret Temple before,
and I have been man too long
And now I want to Hear Music of Joy beyond Death,
and now I am be who has waited to Welcome myself back Home
The great stranger is Home in his House of Joy.”

or words or thoughts or sensations & images to that effect.

Thus for an instant the Sensation of this Eternal House passed thru my hair
tho I couldn’t liberate my body from the bed to float away—
tho did glimpse the foot of the thought of the gate of Heaven—

Then opened my eyes and Saw the blast of light of the real universe
when I opened the window and looked at the clock on the R R Station
with its halfnaked man & woman with clubs, creators of time and chaos,
and down on the street where pastry venders sold their poor sugar
symbolic of Eternity, to Passerby-and great fat clanking beast of Trolley
with its dumb animal look and croaking screech on the tracks
Powered by electric life,, turned a corner of the Presidential Palace
where Bolivar 200 years ago in time planted a secret everlasting Fig-tree
and a fog from another life crept thru its own dimension
Past the cornice of the hotel and travelled downward in the street
To seek the river-had a bridge with little humans crossing, faraway
—and up in the hills the silver gleam of sunlight on the horizon thru thick fog
—and the Cerro San Christobal—with a cross atop and Casbah of poor
consciousness ratted on its hip—
and overall the vast blue flash & blast of open space
the Sky of Time, empty as a big blue dream
and as everlasting as the many eyes that lived to see it
Time is the God, is the Face of the God,
As in the monstrous image of the Ramondi Chavin Sculptured Stone Monument
A cat head many eyed sharp toothed god face long as Time,
with different eyes some upside down and 16 sets of faces
all have fangs—the structure of one consciousness
that waits upstairs to Devour man and all his universes
—turn the picture upside down—the top eyes see more than the human bottom rows
Indifferent, dopey, smiling, horrible, with Snakes & fangs—
The huge gentle creature of the Cosmic joke
that takes whatever form it can to Signify that it is the one that has come to its Home
where all are invited to Enter in Secret eternally
After they have been killed by the illusion of Impossible Death.

A.D this thread appears to be your personal blog, diary whatever you want to call it - why do you not do something like start a blog and post all this stuff there? TIDS seems a long ago memory..now its all about acid or what ever stream of conscieness pours forth from your keyboard to keep thread on page one - is it an ego thing?

There is a method to my madness- an organizing principle to this thread, visible for those who care to look deeply here. I could, I suppose, go back to posting many different threads but I was asked by a poster here not to do so in the interest of more order on the board.

New and important material is coming through here about the central theme(s) of this thread. It is certainly of interest to people doing allied research and I think the careful reader can learn much here, even if these most central concerns are sometimes punctuated with art and related material. In fact, those who care to dig deeply can find links to what is for all effects and purposes secret information that has very, very important implications in our world.

This thread is looking into that nexus where secret government activity enters into the heart of the psychedelic underground and the interplay with cults, New Age endeavors and assorted delusions. This is an ongoing concern as clearly powerful revelation and deep inner change hits the crossroads with all kinds of blind alleys leading in various misdirections and dead ends. If the alphabet soup people know these things, then maybe we should too.

Excerpts from: http://blogs.roanoke.com/dancasey/2013/ ... d-chemist/

Dan Casey | January 9, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Pickard was a pioneer.”

J.M. White,

In more ways than one. The DEA chemists realized AFTER the bust, but before the 2003 trial, that Pickard was not using ergotamine tartrate as his principal precursor, but a (then) uncontrolled substance known as ergocristine. At least in terms of clandestine chemistry, Pickard pioneered the use of ergocristine as a substitute for the much-harder-to-get, tightly controlled ergotamine tartrate. Until then, the feds had no idea ergocristine could be used to synthesize acid. Since Owsley’s bust, EVERYONE else had used ET. (Owsley used lysergic acid monohydrate, which is now impossible to procure).

Only one (quite flawed) book has been written about this case, but there are a few other articles out there that have some more information. The other “best” article appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle and it’s a good one.

The book is Lysergic, by Krystle Cole, who for a time before, during and after the bust was Gordon Todd Skinner’s girlfriend. It’s kind of a first-person account, from an enthusiastic tripper’s perspective. She self-published it and it’s full of spelling and grammatical errors. But for anyone who’s fascinated by the case, it’s required reading. The 2nd edition is better than the first because she has republished a lot of letters she received from Skinner while he was in prison in Nevada after he got busted for MDMA distribution at Burning Man.

Krystle Cole has a website, Neurosoup.com on which she has published some of the transcripts from the trial. But she’s redacted many of the names of the individuals mentioned in tesitmony, such as Dr. John Halpern, a Harvard psychiatrist; Ganga White, a leading yoga educator in this country (The White Lotus Foundation) Joel Kramer (author/philosopher). There are hundreds of pages of other transcripts, unredacted, on Scribd — mostly they are Skinner’s testimony outlining the conspiracy. They also mention the musicians Sting, Paul Simon, and a shadowy Iclandic national and NYC bon vivant named Stefan Wahtne, who was in charge of laundering a good bit of the proceeds through Russia.

The worldwide distributor of Pickard’s product was identified at the trial as a guy named Alec Reid of Petaluma, Calif. He has never been popped for the role he played. If that is the guy’s real name, he’s still bopping around Northern Calif., and he’s in his 70s.

Skinner is now in prison for life (like Pickard) because he kidnapped and tried to kill a guy Krystle Cole was dating after he and she broke up. That is a wild story, too.

Dan Casey | January 10, 2013 at 2:40 am

Warren,

I was unaware of that. I’ll have to look for that episode of 48 hours. The latest on Pickard is that he’s still fighting to get out. He’s won a few legal battles, but lost most. By far his biggest wins have demonstrated that Skinner was, more or less a career informant for a number of different federal agencies over the course of more than 15 years. At trial the government claimed he’d worked for them in two cases; the number was actually many more than that, across a broad array of federal agencies. It’s very doubtful that will ever be enough to get the conviction overturned, though. Pickard was caught red-handed with the biggest LSD lab ever and 6 kilos of precursor.

The distribution network is still in place, though. It likely involves some of the same folks who distributed Nick Sand’s acid before his bust outside Vancouver in ’96. Nick personally told me that he knew Pickard back in the Orange Sunshine trial days — Pickard contributed to Sand’s and Scully’s defense. Nick told me he didn’t know Skinner personally but that he knew of him, and that Skinner was as bad news as just about anyone on Earth. It seemed to me when we were talking (which was shortly after Pickard’s bust) that Nick was holding back a lot of information about Leonard.

There are hints (they’re not strong enough to term ‘evidence’) in the information out there that the impetus for Pickard to begin cooking again in the 1990s was Sand’s bust — he was picking up the mantle, so to speak. Shortly after Sand’s bust, there was a very tense meeting among the acid cognoscenti at a house in Stinson Beach, Calif. Pickard and Skinner and Kramer were there. In 2011 here in Roanoke I met someone else who was at that meeting (according to one of Skinner’s letters to Cole from prison). That guy was visiting here and a mutual friend who lives here introduced us. I spent a few hours with the guy (long story) but I never got around to asking him about it. It was a timing thing — but I’m still kicking myself about that.

I got a message from Pickard a few months ago. It was answers to some questions I posed to him. One was about “Petaluma Al,” the head of the LSD distribution in his organization (according to Skinner’s testimony at the trial) and why Al had never been busted. Pickard’s response was: “As for “Petaluma Al,” I believe Skinner should be awarded the 2003 prize for best fantasy and science fiction short story .”

There have also been many side stories related to this one. One, which you can find on the Web, is known as “Halperngate.” It relates to Harvard psychiatrist Dr. John Halpern’s cooperation with the government in the case against Pickard, and a hugely public row that caused one day in Switzerland, and his subsequent excommunication from the acid underground. Another is the case of the torture inflicted on Krystle Cole’s boyfriend (after she had broken up with Skinner) by Skinner. The injuries were permanent and he’s serving life w/o parole for those now.

The next chemist who tried to replace Pickard was Casey Hardison, but he got busted in England some years ago. It appears someone has picked up the mantle once again, and by now those folks may have even figured out how to automate the synthesis via specialized machinery the pharmaceutical industry has been using for years. Supposedly, that was Pickard’s holy grail.

Scully (with whom I haven’t spoken) is apparently preparing a book about the history of clandestine LSD production. I’m very interested in getting my hands on that when it comes out.

Warren,

I haven’t read Storming Heaven — yet. But I’ve read Acid Dreams, which is pretty good (but which Nick Sand panned). He said by far the best book out there is The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, by Stewart Tendler and Davaid [cq] May. I have read that one (the first edition, 1984). It is amazing, and you can read it online for free. Nick also recommended The Search for the Manchurian Candidate: The CIA and Mind Control, by John D. Marks. It’s based on governmental archival material he stumbled upon and takes you back to the earliest days. I’ve also read The Harvard Psychedelic Club by Don Lattin (pretty good), ACID: The New Secret History of LSD, which has some info that’s nowhere else but overall is quite a flawed book, and Millbrook by Art Kleps, which is also online.

Apparently, The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was republished in a second edition that includes an interview with Nick Sand after his capture in Canada in 1996. I haven’t read that one.

Lysergic (2nd edition) is worth reading if you’re hooked on the subject. So are the trial transcripts, which are hard to put down.
