Too true.

I'm curious: do you think AntiFa can withstand exposure? As with so many "Culture War" dynamics, the opposing sides mirror many attributes. While an anarchist book/coffee shop collective would be more forgiving of political activity than a real estate franchise or law firm or baseball team, and I know a few AntiFa/Black Bloc types who are simply unemployed ("Workers of the World! Support me on Patreon!") -- there must be plenty more who wouldn't want their employers to get emails about their hobbies. No?

The FBI is of course well-seasoned in this tactic and COINTELPRO will be back in force soon. A smaller portion of "anarchists" in North America are the insurrectionary kind- and of those only a portion have straight jobs and identities to sustain. A far greater number are probably students or subcultural types living marginally.

When and if Spencer gets his Secret Service escort, he will have to give up any pretensions of edgy dissident/hipster Nazi status and formally join the power structure.

How Britain’s extremist bloggers helped the ‘alt-right’ go global

White nationalists and UK conspiracy theorists have helped spread fake news across the world, says anti-racist group Hope not Hate

Saturday 11 February 2017

A rightwing network of British bloggers and social media activists has emerged as an increasingly influential voice for white nationalists and for those who oppose multiculturalism. The network is also credited with helping propel Donald Trump to the presidency, a new report has claimed.

In its annual audit of the far right, Hope not Hate, the UK’s largest anti-racism and anti-extremism movement, said that although conventional far right groups such as the English Defence League continue to fracture, new forces have surfaced that can reach a vast international audience and bolster support for the “alt-right”, which is defined as the far right with a fringe “white nationalist element” that opposes multiculturalism and defends “western values”.

Analysis of the global far right network during 2016 – a year that witnessed Brexit and a marked populist resurgence throughout Europe and the US – identified 28 far right groups active in the UK but also named a cohort of Britons that it said were instrumental in propagating “alt-right” views and masterminding attacks on liberal democracy.

“It was a year where a new far right threat became more evident, one that played out largely on social media and to an international audience,” the report states. “It is a threat that has been at the heart of the global fake news phenomenon and one that can engage and mobilise far greater numbers of people across Europe and north America.”

An example of these activities is provided by London-based Paul Watson, described as “editor, staff writer” for the conspiracy website InfoWars – whose most popular article on Friday morning was headlined: “Trump destroys leftist judges.” Watson, who has 483,000 Twitter followers and 764,872 subscribers on YouTube, is named as a central disseminator of the conspiracy theory concerning Hillary Clinton having debilitating health issues in the runup to the US election, including the “Is Hillary Dying?” hoax.

Image
Scottish Calvinist Jim Dowson set up pro-Trump websites from a hub in Hungary.

During a series of unashamedly conspiratorial videos that were viewed millions of times, Watson, originally from Sheffield, suggested Clinton might have had syphilis, brain damage and Parkinson’s disease as well as alleging she was a drug abuser. Watson’s conspiracy theories were also taken up by Fox News, the right-leaning US broadcaster.

Another Briton said to have had an influential intervention in the US elections is 52-year-old Jim Dowson, a Scottish Calvinist who founded the far right, anti-Muslim party Britain First. Dowson, from a hub in Hungary, set up a network of US-focused websites and Facebook groups with the intention of promoting Trump and denigrating his rival during the US election.

Dowson’s websites include Patriot News Agency – whose postings have been viewed and shared tens of thousands of times in the US – and whose articles on Friday include a critique of a new Netflix series which it accused of stoking anti-white racism. An investigation by the New York Times in December claimed that although a sizeable volume of US election fake news emanated from central and Eastern Europe, Dowson’s operation was the only obviously politically inspired intervention.

Among the increasingly internationalised far right movement, Dowson is considered adept at building an online fanbase, managing to attract 1.4 million Facebook followers to Britain First. Dowson himself has described his strategy as spreading “devastating anti-Clinton, pro-Trump memes and sound bites into sections of the population too disillusioned with politics to have taken any notice of conventional campaigning”.

Image
Former BNP leader Nick Griffin was a visitor to Jim Dowson’s anti-immigrant group.

According to Hope not Hate’s report, Dowson spent much of 2016 building an international network of far right parties, militia groups and religious extremists. His anti-immigrant group Knights Templar International opened a “branch” in Budapest, Hungary, where former BNP leader Nick Griffin was witnessed as a frequent visitor along with known far right faces from Sweden and the US.

Hope not hate expects Dowson’s influence to grow this year as he fosters relationships with Russia and far-right agitators in Europe and the US. A recent Dowson alliance involves Aleksandr Dugin, a facist with alleged links to the Kremlin and who is understood to be helping Dowson construct a new office in the Serb capital Belgrade that will promote far right news sites entirely in Cyrillic script.

The Alt Right’s War on Whitefish, and the Growth of an Opposition

While Alt Right people associated with the Daily Stormer and the surrounding constellations of podcasts, blogs, and busy Twitter accounts have always presented themselves as a movement that is new and intellectual rather than violent, this is a façade that has been cultivated to insulate them from the long history of opposition their movement has faced. While the branding, strategy, and talking points are new, this is traditional white nationalism repackaged for the smartphone generation. Almost every single prominent Alt Right organization, from the National Policy Institute to American Renaissance, can trace its roots back to earlier white nationalist projects that have had long histories of terrorism. American Renaissance, which built its reputation by arguing people of color have lower IQs and are more aggressive than whites, has hosted guests like former KKK leaders Don Black and David Duke, various Holocaust Deniers, and Aryan Nations members. At the National Policy Institute conference you will see former neo-Nazi skinheads, which is not so surprising after the recent video of stiffed-arm Seig Heils to round out their 2016 conference.

Andrew Anglin lies on the edges of this pack of open fascists, often trying to take their snarky memes and racialist talking points, and use them to bring along traditional neo-Nazism. While the Alt Right has relegated itself to podcasts and online word diarrhea, neo-Nazis have had a long tradition of stepping out into the streets in an effort to strike terror into their neighbors. What Anglin hoped to do was to return the Alt Right to its long tradition of American white nationalist organizing: the main street march. The Alt Right, with a more educated demeanor and dreams of Washington power never wanted to resort to the embarrassing role-playing so characteristic of the “revolutionary” white nationalist groups often from the rural South.

ANTIFA WORLDWIDE: A BRIEF HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL ANTIFASCISM

Image

Fascism has never arisen without opposition through community consensus. Instead, antifascists have worked to root out fascist infiltration and “entryism” that seeks to pass as the merger of left and right, while also militantly opposing fascist marches and meetings. Where fascism obtained power, it did so through the largely through the betrayal of the organized left by its leadership, along with state collaboration with the fascists amid significant, often violent, fighting amongst left-wing groups. If, in Italy and Germany, antifascists had decided to join with powerful liberals and even conservatives to defend their communities against Blackshirts, if the Communists of Germany had not succumbed to the temptation of labelling social democrats the equivalent of fascists while completely alienating everyone outside of a particularly small section of the industrial working class, perhaps fascism might never have emerged—perhaps it would have only been a detail in the history of Italy in the 1910s. It is wise, then, to heed the warnings of history and to maintain a form of militant antifascist action based in tactical alliances and the spirit of friendship rather than vulgar self-interest and political bravado. Where fascism is proud, we must be humble. Where fascism is divisive, we must unite. Where fascism is weak, we must strike.

The White Nationalist from Worthington

Prior to launching the Daily Stormer, Andrew Anglin was simply Andy, a high school freshman at Worthington's Linworth Alternative school, where he attended classes beginning in 1999 after attending Worthington Christian Middle School. He would later transfer to Worthington Kilbourne High School, graduating on June 8, 2003, according to the school.

In interviews, five high school classmates, who asked not to be named for fear of repercussions, described Anglin as quirky, funny and nice — but also standoffish and occasionally antagonistic. (Published details were corroborated by multiple sources.) At the time, he was a devout vegan. "But he wasn't that kind of vegan," said one former friend, describing other vegan students who carefully researched their diets. "He was the guy who ate a bag of Fritos and that was his meal for the day." Others recalled Anglin going so far as to shop for vegan skateboarding shoes.

Anglin's individualistic streak exhibited itself in his appearance. The first week of freshman year he arrived for school sporting self-styled dreadlocks, with his hair divided into squares and each square twisted into a dread-like spiral. His typical uniform included baggy hooded sweatshirts and outsized JNCO or UFO pants, and acquaintances alternately described his style as "hippy grunge" or "Nirvana-meets-some-music-fest-spiritual." At one point, he stopped wearing a hat emblazoned with the Independent Truck Company logo because another student purchased the same cap. "He was like, 'Now I can't wear that hat,'" said a classmate. "He didn't want to be the same as anybody else."

Friends said Anglin was smart, but unmotivated.

"It was one of those cases where if he would have applied himself he could have done very well," said one. He was, however, politically and socially engaged — though at the far opposite end of the spectrum from where he currently resides. "We were all socially liberal, and he was in line with everybody in our small, alternative school," said a friend. His favorite bands at the time mirrored this worldview: Propagandhi, Dead Kennedys and Crass.

"When people used homophobic or racist slurs around him [in high school], he was very outspoken about saying that was not OK," said an acquaintance. "And that has stuck with me to this day. It's ingrained in me. He was so adamant about that, and it opened my eyes a little bit."

In an autobiographical March 2015 Daily Stormer post, Anglin addressed his early liberal views, writing, "I was not really ever a liberal, in the SJW (Social Justice Warrior) sense, as they are fighting for the system which is something I never did." (While Anglin initially responded via email to Alive, he didn't respond to specific interview requests.)

Even in high school, Anglin was something of a provocateur, though his targets were generally conservative leaders, like President George W. Bush, or fundamentalist Christianity. One friend noted he had unique perspectives on myriad topics, which made him an interesting conversationalist since it was impossible to predict what he might say next.

In January 2006, Anglin, then in his early 20s, was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after getting caught with a pipe containing marijuana residue. He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance for having less than 100 grams of marijuana. The paraphernalia charge was amended to disorderly conduct, and the court dismissed the other charge. Anglin eventually pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge and was fined $100 plus costs, which his father paid. In December, Anglin filed to have the drug charge expunged from his record, which would require an in-person court appearance. No court date had been scheduled as of press time.

Regardless of the rare brush with the law, Anglin never appeared to get into trouble at home. Those who knew him best described his family life as "normal," noting Andrew's strong relationship with his father. In a January video-conference interview with an ABC/Fox affiliate in Montana, Anglin said, "I get along fine with my parents. Hopefully human relationships can go beyond politics. I would hope so."

But Anglin could be unpredictable. Three classmates described one high school gathering where Anglin repeatedly slammed his head into the sidewalk in front of the house where the party was taking place. Similarly, the walls of Anglin's childhood bedroom were dotted with indentations, owing to a predilection for slamming his head into things when lashing out, according to multiple friends.

Beginning during his sophomore year, some classmates noted a marked change in Anglin. His moods could be more unpredictable, and he started to provoke older students to fight, "like he wanted to get hit," one person explained. Another longtime friend put it more bluntly, saying, "If you go out for a drink [with Anglin], then you're either going to fight or stop someone from kicking his head in. He just doesn't care."

III.

After Anglin transferred to Worthington Kilbourne, he lost touch with many of his Linworth Alternative classmates. He ditched his vegan diet, which was the first attribute anyone mentioned when discussing his teen years. More recently, Anglin authored a May 2015 Daily Stormer post encouraging readers to "Take the Stormer 30 Day Paleo Challenge," which included a passage about meat being a staple of any diet ("All forms of meat are good forms of meat").

In 2007, two freshman-year friends had strikingly similar run-ins with Anglin. On both occasions, Anglin expressed a deep interest in conspiracy theory and, in particular, reptilian humanoids, a concept that posits global leaders either are, or are controlled by, lizard-like beings. These theories would form the backbone of Anglin's first forays into blogging on his site Adventure Quest 2012, which launched with a post laying forth the site's mission to mend "the wounds produced by modern society ... and [help] the reader transcend these physical bonds and reach total ascendancy." "To mend these wounds," Anglin wrote, "the world must learn to embrace diversity and color."

Later posts would delve into the lives of reptilians and humanoid sharks.

How the ‘Alt-Right’ Builds On Earlier Far-Right Upsurges

By: Matthew N. Lyons

Published 16 February 2017

The "alt-right" network has brought together multiple currents, from neo-Nazis to men's rights activists, right-wing anarchists to neo-reactionaries.

The day after Donald Trump's upset electoral victory over Hillary Clinton, "alt-right" founder Richard Spencer declared that his movement was "the new Trumpian vanguard" — offering ideological direction to Donald Trump's fuzzy-headed populism. Spencer and his comrades have generally supported President Trump's early measures but they want more — a total ban on all immigration, for instance — and instead of Trump's dog whistle appeals, they advocate an explicit politics of race. Some Alt-Rightists, in addition, have warned that they might "revolt" if the Trump administration doesn't follow their lead.

The alt-right (short for alternative right) — a loose network of white nationalists, misogynists, and authoritarians who are as hostile to mainstream conservatives as they are to multicultural liberals — offered vital help to Trump's presidential campaign through the skillful use of internet memes and online harassment of Trump opponents. But they have never seen Trump as truly one of their own or believed he would bring about the changes they wanted. Most alt-rightists hope that a Trump presidency will give them space to promote far more sweeping changes — notably dismantling or seceding from the United States to establish a white "ethno-state."

The alt-right's attitude toward Trump highlights an important dividing line within the U.S. right — the divide between those who accept the legitimacy of the existing political system, and those who don't. I reserve the term "far right" for forces that (1) regard human inequality as natural or inevitable and (2) reject the established political order on principle. The "system-loyal right," by contrast, includes those forces that want to make change through incremental measures. An analogy on the left is the difference between social democrats and communists, reformists and revolutionaries.

One of the biggest ways that far rightists make an impact is through collaboration and interchange with system-loyal rightists, such as alt-rightists helping to put Trump in the White House and using his campaign to increase their own visibility. Yet the two part company on whether to accept the U.S. political system or abandon it and sooner or later that is likely to lead to conflict.

Far-right movements, as I use the term, have risen periodically in U.S. history, starting with the original Ku Klux Klan in the years after the Civil War. Denouncing northern "military despotism," the Klan and similar vigilante groups waged a campaign of terror across the former Confederacy to disenfranchise African-Americans and destroy the Radical Reconstruction state governments in which black people played a leading role. By contrast, the second Klan, founded in 1915, was a system-loyal movement that vilified Catholics, Jews, and immigrants as well as Blacks, but found ample room to promote its supremacist politics within the political order of its day.

Today's far-right politics began forming in the 1970s and 80s as part of a broader rightist backlash against the progressive upheavals of the 1960s. The Black liberation movement and other social liberation forces not only challenged established hierarchies and transformed U.S. culture; they also brought about big changes in the U.S. government's role. Under pressure from the left, the federal government banned racial discrimination and protected Black people's right to vote, created new social programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, increased regulation of business in areas such as the environment and occupational health and safety, strengthened protections for criminal defendants and prisoners, and expanded women's reproductive rights.

Most of the rightist counterattack to these changes, such as the Reagan Revolution of the 1980s, was designed to shift the existing political system in a more conservative direction. But for the first time since World War II, a significant minority of rightists began to withdraw their loyalty from the U.S. government. In the 1960s, white supremacist groups such as the Klan had concentrated on defending Jim Crow segregation and keeping Black people from voting. After these efforts were decisively defeated, many white supremacists gravitated toward a new kind of revolutionary rightist politics, based on an unprecedented convergence of Klan and neo-Nazi forces.

By the 1980s, a resurgent white supremacist movement was pursuing multiple strategies. David Duke used an electoral strategy, masking his neo-Nazism behind a populist veneer, and pioneered campaign themes that system-loyal rightists such as Patrick Buchanan later emulated. Tom Metzger's White Aryan Resistance developed a militant, street-fighting presence, recruited heavily within the skinhead subculture, and promoted "Third Position" politics that blended racism with twisted anti-capitalism. Most dramatically, an underground cell known as The Order" declared war" on the U.S. government and embarked on a string of bank robberies, killings, and bombings before its members were rounded up or killed in shootouts with the police.

There's a very simple reason why the alt-right is not the new counterculture

Paul Joseph Watson is like the aging rocker telling you metal is back because he saw some hipster kid wearing a Black Sabbath tee. It’s hilarious and also disturbing to see that cultural myopia played out en masse

Damien Walter

Paul Joseph Watson might look like a Millet's in Runcorn is missing a shelf stacker, but he claims to be the coolest man since the sixties ended. As provocateur-in-chief for conspiracy news site Infowars, he's a high profile spokesman of the #AltRight, and a rumour monger for fake news stories like #Pizzagate.

They are serious:

TO OTHER WORKING AMERICANS
December 3, 2016

Image

To other working Americans:

As the election season of 2016 has finally come to an end, the ramifications of this election are on everyone's minds. The coming year is going to bring tremendous change. Although we probably all agree on that statement, we probably have very different ideas about what those changes will be, and whether or not they will be positive. Hopefully, we can try to find some common ground.

We assume that most working class people are tired of living in poverty, living paycheck to paycheck, watching the products of their hard work evaporate before their eyes. Times are tough for many of us, and many of us have been wondering in private how we're going to survive. Politician after politician makes empty promises, but no matter which party is in power, there is no real relief for working Americans. Instinctively, we start to look around for who to blame, and the messages we're bombarded with make it seem easy enough... we blame Muslims, Black people, Brown people, "illegals". It all seems very simple. We're competing with these people for jobs and resources, so it seems like a logical enough conclusion.

Historically, white working class folks have nearly always been at odds with immigrants and folks of color. It's a lot easier to recognize ourselves and our loved ones in others who share the same traditions, culture, religious beliefs, etc. The majority of the faces we see on TV, in our community, and the folks we identify as leaders usually look a lot like us. We can often relate easiest to other white people, no matter how poor or rich. They look like people we'd see across the dinner table, and that makes it easier to hear each other out, even when we disagree. Most of us would scoff at anyone claiming that we intentionally seek out an allegiance to whiteness, or to being white, but without noticing that we're doing it, our natural enemies become non-white people.

The problem with this idea is that we've had it wrong for centuries. We've been kept blind to the true nature of what is really going on. Look around. Who lives in the houses or trailers in the same neighborhoods as us? Who works next to us in the factories, or cooks alongside us at the restaurants? Who is working in the fields with us, picking produce that we'll see at inflated prices later in the supermarket? It sure as hell isn't rich white people. It's Brown people, Black people, and other working class white people. They are the ones that are in similar situations to us, living paycheck to paycheck, stretching to feed their families like we do. So why then would we view them as so different from us that we literally view them as our enemies?

Allegiances, traditionally, are made among people who have common interests. Throughout American history, white working people have generally believed that our interests are based on looking out for each other, and we've seen our community as folks who have the same skin color as us. We've felt it was important to work for the betterment of other white folks, for our culture, for our shared identity. The truth, however, could never be further away. Whose interests have our actions really served? White workers? In the short term, the answer may be "yes". Working for the advancement of the white race at the cost of other folks does buy us relative privileges, occasional access to better jobs and neighborhoods, and even some luxuries. In the end, however, we're still poor, we're still breaking our backs to make other people money... and those people aren't working folks of color.

The true, long-term interests of white workers lie with the fate of all other workers, no matter what their race. All workers, of all races, are exploited. We are exploited because we put in the lion's share of the work, skill, and experience, and we bear the scars and lifelong pain from working class life, but we never actually get ahead enough to breathe free. We work multiple jobs to barely meet our needs, while bosses and the people in charge profit from that labor. We are born where we're at, and we die where we're at while rich politicians and white collar business owners live in the lap of luxury. Who are these rich people? Who are these politicians? The truth is that 95% of them are white. They are also mostly male. Almost all of them are English speaking. They are also mostly Christian (or at least pretend to be so). And yet, in spite of having so many superficial things in common with one another, our lives are completely separate. When we stay up late at the kitchen table with a stack of bills, trying to figure out how the budge is going to work, they're eating at restaurants where they'll never even look at the amount on their bill. Tonight, when we finally go to bed in our noisy apartments, our modest houses, or our crowded trailers, they will go to bed in luxury and comfort, with no worries at all. Tomorrow morning, they'll wake up hours after we do, and they won't have to rush through getting their kids to school, or pray that their car starts so that they won't be late for work again. They might look like us, but they don't actually know us at all.

The blunt reality is that for the last five hundred years on this continent, white working class people have been treated as disposable, and used as tools to colonize and kill people of color, feed and support the wealthy, and do the back-breaking work that creates the wealth and high living standards of the same white rich people who have always been in charge. We have been promised that if we just work hard enough, we will be like them. The trust is that we have worked and pushed ourselves for our entire lives, all the while sacrificing our own needs, wants, aspirations, while hoping that better future really is just around the corner. As hard as it is to admit, in those sleepless nights we all know it really is as simple as that. No one denies the history of what has happened at working people's expenses. Wars, poverty, poor health, homelessness, wage slavery... these are all preventable ills created by someone, but perpetuated by us... the same workers who suffer these ills.

For some five centuries we've been used by the rich (among our own race) to promote their agenda, and we have suffered because of it. Yet, somehow, we've still been convinced that our allegiance is to other white folks, including to these same rich white bosses and politicians that would sooner see us die than actually help us as allies. Let's get real, how often do these white rich bosses or so-called "race-realists" actually just give help to poor white folk, in any way that doesn't benefit them through a photo opp and a tax break? When does this actually happen? Do you really think they care at all about our well-being? Where's the allegiance from them, the people that put us in the hardest living situations we face, and simultaneously spew out the pro-white speeches at political rallies and gun shows?

When you walk into your workplace tomorrow, where are the majority of the Black folks? Or Brown people? Or women? Are they in positions of power? Sure, some might be, but where are the majority of the folks of color that are at our workplace? That's right: they're side by side with us, experiencing the same bad management, unpredictable paychecks, long shifts, and wage slavery as us. Logic tells us that we should also be side by side in our fight for liberty, and an end to oppression. Wouldn't that make more sense than continuing to only work with the same people that rob our paychecks and swindle us out of the products of our labor?

The heart of the matter is that we've been too busy fighting the people who should naturally be our allies against these injustices. The rich whites have used our skin color against us, have used our instinct to fear people who are different than us... they've used workers against workers, us against us. They've blinded us with these ideas of "white pride" and "white nationalism" into fighting other working people of other races, while they sit on the sideline and laugh.

For far too long, the ignorant stooges of the rich within our race have thrown up a red flag to these ideas... have spewed words like "pinko" and "communist" at white folks that may have finally started to awaken to the truth of what's really happening here. I'm not a communist. I hate Stalin. I hate Lenin. I hate Mao. I also hate Trump, Clinton, and Obama. These people, all of them, are the ruling elites that I despise, because they live in luxury while the rest of us work away our very existence to barely eat.

White working people, the time is now to form the real alliances that will actually better our lives. It's time to see who our real allies must be.

For starters, we have to reject the ridiculous notion that migrants and refugees from Mexico or Syria are our enemy, that they are somehow stealing our jobs or are somehow really "terrorists". Let's get real: who's really stealing our jobs? Who is really harming us? Well, let's see, a generous estimate of the number of illegal immigrants working in the US is 6 million (notice I said working, not living). This stands in stark contrast to the conservative estimate that nearly 5 million jobs have been outsourced thanks to "free trade" agreements pushed by both political parties. Well, let's ask ourselves, who's really stealing our jobs? Poor Mexicans? Or Rich White CEOs?

We've been fed ridiculous ideas of the "invading" brown hordes, and the rich whites that make up the upper tiers (and financiers) of right-wing militias salivate over our reactions. If we're busy fighting the Mexicans and Muslims, and trying to round up all the "illegals," then we're too busy to fight the real enemies, the ones who set us against each other to begin with. Most of us that keep falling for these lines mean well. Hell, we only want to defend our families and our communities... but in reality, we're weakening them even more, by fighting our real potential allies and diverting our attention from the real enemy, the "enemy within," the politicians and the race-realists, the bosses and white collar criminals who are the only ones really profiting off of us to begin with.

And why are all these immigrants and refugees coming here in the first place? Why has there been a rush to get into this country? About 80% of the Mexican immigrants here in the US have entered since 1994, which was when NAFTA was passed, a free trade agreement that benefits nobody but the rich people on both sides of the border. Surges in Muslim immigration are much more recent. In 2016 alone, there have been over 38,000 Muslim refugees admitted into the United States. Why is that? The United States military is involved in active conflict in 4/5 of the top countries where Muslims refugees are coming from; Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq*. White nationalist and so called patriots keep telling us that we need to be worried about terrorist threats and immigrants, but in reality, those folks are fleeing problems in their own countries that were created by American politicians and their foreign policies. If the people in power do not care for their citizens, maybe it is time we start to genuinely care for each other, regardless of race, religion, or creed.

Whiteness has been an interesting concept in American history. The evolution of the identity of whiteness on this continent tells us everything we need to know about the situation we find ourselves in. I think that David Gilbert explains this complicated history the best, in his essay "Looking at the Working Class Historically":

Up until the 1680’s little distinction was made in the status of Blacks and English and other Europeans held in involuntary servitude. Contrary to common belief, the status of Blacks in the first seventy years of the Virginia colony was not that of racial, lifelong, hereditary slavery, and the majority of the whites who came were not "free”. Black and white servants intermarried, escaped together, and rebelled together.

There were a series of servile rebellions that threatened the plantation system in the period preceding the transition to racially designated chattel slavery and white supremacy. In 1661 Black and Irish servants joined in an insurrectionary plot in Bermuda. In 1663, in Virginia, there was an insurrection for the common freedom of Blacks, whites and Indian servants. In the next 20 years, there were no fewer than ten popular and servile revolts and plots in Virginia. Also many Black and white servants successfully escaped (to Indian territories) and established free societies.

The 20 year period of servile rebellions made the issue of social control urgent for the plantation owners, at the same time as they economically needed to move to a system of perpetual slavery. The purpose of creating a basic White/Black division was in order to have one section of labor police and control the other. As Allen says, “The non-slavery of white labor was the indispensable condition for the slavery of black labor”.

A series of laws were passed and practices imposed that forged a qualitative distinction between white and Black labor. In 1661 a Virginia law imposed twice the penalty time for escaped English bond-servants who ran away in the company of an African life-time bond-servant. Heavy penalties were imposed on white women servants who bore children fathered by Africans. One of the very first white slave privileges was the exemption of white servant women from work in the fields and the requirements through taxes to force Black children to go to work at twelve, while white servant children were excused until they were fourteen. In 1680, Negroes were forbidden to carry arms, defensive or offensive. At the same time, it was made legal to kill a Negro fugitive bond-servant who resisted recapture.

What followed 1680 was a 25 year period of laws that systematically drew the color line as the limit on various economic, social, and political rights. By 1705, “the distinction between white servants and Black slavery were fixed: Black slaves were to be held in life long hereditary slavery and whites for five years, with many rights and protections afforded to them by law.”

We can infer from these series of laws that white laborers were not “innately racist” before the material and social distinctions were drawn. This is evidenced by the rulers’ need to impose very harsh penalties against white servants who escaped with Blacks or who bore them children. As historian Philip Bruce observed of this period, many white servants “...had only recently arrived from England, and were therefore comparatively free from... race prejudice.”

The white bond-servants now could achieve freedom after 5 years service: the white women and children, at least, were freed from the most arduous labor. The white bond servant, once freed, had the prospect of the right to vote and to own land (at the Indians’ expense).

These privileges did not come from the kindness of the planters’ hearts nor from some form of racial solidarity. (Scottish coal miners were held in slavery in the same period of time.) Quite simply, the poor whites were needed and used as a force to suppress the main labor force: the African chattel slaves. The poor white men constituted the rank and file of the militias and later (beginning in 1727) the slave patrols. They were given added benefits, such as tax exemptions to do so. By 1705, after Blacks had been stripped of the legal right to self-defense, the white bond servant was given a musket upon completion of servitude. There was such a clear and conscious strategy that by 1698 there were even “deficiency laws” that required the plantation owners to maintain a certain ratio of white to African servants. The English Parliament, in 1717, passed a law making transportation to bond-servitude in the plantation colonies a legal punishment for crime. Another example of this conscious design is revealed in the Council of Trade and Plantation report to the King in 1721 saying that in South Carolina “Black slaves have lately attempted and were very nearly succeeding in a new revolution – and therefore, it may be necessary to propose some new law for encouraging the entertainment of more white servants in the future.

We can see the evolution of the idea of whiteness in America, as a racial identity that stood in contrast to the identity of black and brown folks. The "us vs them" mentality was created and stoked by politicians and policy. Once our allegiances stopped being to other impoverished working people, and we instead aligned with white people of all classes, we lost track of who the real enemy was. Unfortunately, we're still there. The rich people among our own race have made us so confused that we'd rather be on the border hunting for brown working people than actually fighting those people that create the social conditions that we all collectively suffer in. I mean, let's be honest here, if this was actually about securing our borders, why wouldn't we be talking about the danger of illegal immigrants coming through Canada, or even talking about any white illegal immigrants?

Our blind hatred and distrust of non-white people will continue to be the nail in our coffins. We've been similarly divided from recognizing our shared interests with the rights of women, people with different sexual and gender identities, people with disabilities, and people of different religions.

The rich and powerful have been great at dividing workers up from each other as much as they can, by distorting and magnifying our existing divisions and differences. Now, unlike traditional conservatives, Trump’s rhetoric has actually appealed directly to the white working class. He claims that he opposes free trade agreements like the Transpacific Partnership (TPP) and has said that NAFTA was a mistake. But beneath this populist rhetoric lies a bleak reality – Trump, like all politicians, is just one more opportunist intentionally playing towards the worst elements in our society. He makes appeals to the concerns of white working folks, by calling Mexican immigrants "rapists" and "criminals", and threatening to make a registry of Muslims in this country. But we have seen where those policies take us and we do not want to even begin to go down that road!

We consistently get used and thrown to the side, just to expand the power of those already above us. Over and over again, we've shown that we'd rather support some billionaire TV personality while our kids go hungry at night, than actually organize together for better pay, or fight back against the people that have been using us.

It's a sick reality, and yes, the stakes are high in 2016. They're high every year. And deep down, we all know that even though Trump may seem like a breath of fresh air, we're still going to be screwed, and we're still going to be ranting about the "illegals" stealing our jobs, or the Muslims being "terrorists", or these crazy hippie liberal SJWs... while ignoring the rich, white, Christians among us that rake in the profits and power. Wake up! We've fallen for this crap for far too long! No Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton or Rand Paul or Bernie Sanders is going to save us! Only we can do it... together, as people of all races and backgrounds that are sick of living like this!

This is an open call to all pissed off white working people. This is an open call to ignore the rhetoric of the alt-right, to ignore the false allegiances that the rich whites try to get us to buy into, to ignore the illogical and ridiculous race-baiting from the ignorant among us! This is a call to reject the IDEA of whiteness; that is, to reject the idea that our allegiance is somehow determined by what skin we have, even when our real living situations are so different. This is an open call to no longer ignore the fact that our real allies are not determined by skin color, but by our social conditions. Our real enemies are mostly white English speaking Christians. Our allies are folks of all colors who are forced to work for a living, to provide for their families and keep a roof over their heads.

Until we start to recognize ourselves in our neighbors, we are doomed to repeat everything that's happened for the last centuries. We'll still be here trying to climb out of the hole we find ourselves in, and our children will inherit the same destiny, and our grandchildren after them, and so on... until finally, a generation of white working people will realize that we've been tricked and used, primarily by people of our own race. We will be stuck in someone else's fantasy until we recognize that the glorious white nation promised by the alt-right is only about power for them, and the same hard lives for us!

Militant Tactics Against the Right

In the aftermath of the shutdown of far right celebrity Milo Yiannapoulos at UC Berkeley, there’s been much debate among progressives and leftists about the use of militant tactics against the right. Some of the questions under contention are whether militant tactics bring down repression on the most vulnerable, and whether free speech—even for fascists—is sacrosanct. Undocumented UC Berkeley student Juan Prieto talks about why he supported the shutdown. And Kieran discusses the history of the group Anti-Racist Action and makes the case for mass militant organizing and action.
