JFK Assassination Magazine

Hello all,

Exciting news! The print version of "garrison: Issue 001" is now available via LuLu. We are so excited for this to happen, as we were happy yet upset that we ran out of the initial 100 copies so quickly. If you didn't get to buy the first run, now is the chance.

There are a few reasons we went with LuLu:
1) Amazon really treats independent authors and publishers poorly, more so when trying to list a magazine. They use a large corporation as their third-party magazine dealer. If you don't get jump through massive hoops to list with them, you can't get on Amazon.
2) LuLu uses the perfect-bound spines, which means the binding is squared off with printing down the spine rather than being stapled and v-shaped. it's much nice.
3) The glossy paper used for the cover is thicker and, I believe, nice.
4) International (outside-the-U.S.) orders will be accepted and fulfilled.
5) LuLu often runs deals and specials. If you type in ONEFIVE in the discount box today, June 27th until 11:59 p.m., you will get 15% off all orders.
6) You have multiple options for shipping. You choose method and pricing.

Here is the LuLu link for Midnight Writer News Publications, where you can buy garrison:
http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/MidnightWriterNews

Here is the link to the announcement on MidnightWriterNews.com, where you can see a list of the articles and writers in issue 001:
https://midnightwriternews.com/garrison ... available/

If you didn't get a print copy and would like one, now is the time. Thank you all for your kindness and your support. If any of you would like to spread the news on your blogs or on social media, it would be appreciated.

9/11 Truth Teleconference
wtc7 pentagon
Draft Agenda for July 31, 2019

8 pm (ET) / 5 pm (PT)
Teleconference dial-in # (605) 313-4118
Access code: 464958#

[Note: Some telephone service providers block access to this teleconference service, or require additional charges. If you encounter any of these difficulties, please try calling this alternative number: (425) 535-9195. You will then be required to key in the original phone number above before entering the access code. Please inform of us of any technical difficulties you encounter in accessing the teleconference.]

Greetings all,

The July teleconference will feature some important speakers, some fascinating analysis, and one piece of very positive 9/11-related news.

First up is investigative journalist Christopher Bollyn, who is a major figure in the 9/11 Truth Movement. Christopher, who has been with us on the teleconference before, is the author of the Solving 9-11 set of books and The War on Terror: The Plot to Rule the Middle East. He has written extensively on Israel and Palestine as well as on the history and geo-political background of the events of September 11, 2001. On Wednesday he will be discussing the situation with Donald Trump, 9/11, and the War on Terror. Here is an article on the subject posted recently on Christopher’s website: http://www.bollyn.com/donald-trump-netanyahu-911/

Next we have a piece of great news delivered by Ted Walter, AE911Truth’s director of strategy. Ted will tell us about a historic resolution just passed by the Franklin Square and Munson Fire District just outside of Queen’s, New York, calling for a new investigation into the crimes of 9/11. This is the first fire district to take such a step. The district took this initiative, in part, because it lost a fire fighter at Ground Zero on 9/11 and has at least one other suffering health effects from working at the scene. Here is Ted’s article on the resolution: https://www.ae911truth.org/news/540-new ... estigation.

Our third and final speaker will be Karl Golovin, a retired special agent of the U.S. Customs Service, whose duties over three weeks in November of 2001 included sifting through the rubble of WTC-7 that was brought to Fresh Kils Landfill. Karl will be telling us about a 1952 book he considers essential for understanding geopolitics over the last 1,000 years (and the last 100, especially). It is called The Iron Curtain Over America, by John Beaty The book is available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/1519023847/re ... dDbDGF1HE0) and is also accessible for free at the Unz Report:
http://www.unz.com/book/john_beaty__the ... r-america/

This will be followed, as usual, by announcements.

We look forward to having you all join us this Wednesday!

Cheryl Curtiss
Craig McKee

Doug West
Gerald Pechenuk, LarouchePac
David Rolde, Anti-imperialist activist

The minutes of the May 29, 2019 regular conference call were APPROVED.

Book published
James Hufferd spoke about his latest book, Colonel Crystal’s Parallel Universe: A Defense Only Military. This is a novel about a top flight commander in Afghanistan and Iraq who retires and , disillusioned with the U.S. Military, writes down his grievances about U.S. foreign policy. He develops a concept of a defense only military. James said, “All countries have this except for the United States. Russia and China each have one foreign base, but the U.S. has over a thousand military bases and installations on foreign soil.” This novel is James’s 10th book and is available on Amazon and other online bookstores. James’s website is http://911truth.org/grassroots-contacts/

Apollo lunar missions
Jonathan Mark of FlyBy News has been considering the implausibility of the Apollo moon landings, in part because NASA now states it has to learn how to protect the astronauts before they can send them beyond low earth orbit. After 10 years of seeing the public’s resistance to 9/11 facts, Jonathan decided to look to the subject of the future, the exploration of outer space. “They will either have to keep lying about what they claim to have done, using 1960s technology, and keep suppressing the truth, or, they will have to own up to it. And if they own up to it, this could redirect the country because of the popular uprising of all these people realizing they’ve been under cognitive dissonance most of their lives and they will demand change.” Jonathan’s website is https://www.flybynews.com

Strategy for victory
Gerald Pechenuk’s presentation regarded ending perpetual war and the surveillance nightmare of the post 9/11 era. He spoke of Bill Binney’s position that Russia never hacked the DNC computers and the effort to get Binney to testify of this before Congress. “As a result of this lie, that Russia hacked the DNC, the Congress passed a bill that the United States can carry out cyber warfare against Russia, China, Iran and North Korea without it going through the President.” Gerald also told about the petition to have Lyndon Larouche exonerated, which is posted on their website: ttps://larouchepac.com

Colorado Pentagon conference
Barbara Honegger and Bonnie Faulkner attended the May Pentagon conference sponsored by Scientists for 9/11 Truth, and Barbara provided a review. She met Warren Stutt, who had analysed the alleged Flight 77 Flight Data Recorder. His findings were that it indicated a north path for the plane that approached the Pentagon. The conference videos are available at http://www.scientistsfor911truth
Barbara’s rebuttal video can be found here: https://youtu.be/05wSreYUUnY
In response to a question, Barbara presented her theory about why some in the Truth Movement have been accelerating their support for the claim that Flight 77 really hit the Pentagon. She responded that it might be related to the release of the 28 pages and to the ongoing lawsuit by 9/11 family members against the government of Saudi Arabia, which could not succeed if Flight 77 is shown not to have hit the Pentagon.

Announcements
Karl Golovin told of attending a Brookings Institution event on May 29 and asking General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, whether a false flag terrorist attack could be used to lead the U.S. into war against Iran. Kevin Barrett wrote an article about this and included the C-Span video link: https://www.veteranstoday.com/2019/05/30/dunford/
Barbara Honegger mentioned two developments with potential to increase 9/11 truth awareness. A friend of hers attended a meeting in Europe and discussed 9/11 truth with Admiral Mike Rogers, recently retired NSA director, who seemed to show a positive reaction when learning about the Lawyers’ Committee efforts. Additionally, a film production company that supplies documentaries to Japanese mainstream television is now producing a film about 9/11, after learning of the Lawyers’ Committee Grand Jury Petition.
Barbara also gave an update on September 11 anniversary event planning: Professor Daniele Ganser will be the keynote speaker at the Zurich event; Lawyers’ Committee members will also be speaking. The videos from this eight-hour event will be available on YouTube. A Dutch newspaper about 9/11 is currently being distributed in a different European city every weekend. It will be published in English and be available at the Zurich event. Mick Harrison will be speaking at the 9/11 film festival in Oakland, CA. David Meiswinkle and Andrew Kreig are planning an event for either Washington, D.C., or New York City.
Cheryl Curtiss said the Red Pill Expo in Hartford was most uplifting and encouraging. Richard Gage received a tremendous response and two standing ovations.
Cheryl noted that the July 31 teleconference speakers will be Christopher Bollyn, Adam Ruff, and Karl Golovin.
Call began at 8 p.m. EST and adjourned at 10:55 p.m. EST/5 p.m. to 7:55pm. PST. Audio of the June call can be heard here: http://truthandshadows.com/wp-content/u ... 062619.mp3. The next monthly teleconference will take place on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at 8 p.m. EST, 5 p.m. PST. Agenda items should be emailed to facilitator Cheryl Curtiss (chercurt@aol.com) no later than one week before the call. Please use subject line “Agenda item for 911 Truth Teleconference.” Please include a brief description of your item and any relevant links you’d like participants to be aware of, together with your estimate of the number of minutes your agenda item will require. If you would like to join the teleconference list serve, contact Craig McKee (craigmckee911@gmail.com), and anyone who would like information such as links included in the minutes should email Ann Hendricks (hendricks_ann@yahoo.com).

Defendant says he wants to sue Troy over police dog bite

By Kenneth C. Crowe II Updated 5:35 pm EDT, Friday, August 16, 2019

TROY – A 52-year-old man charged with attempting to kill a Troy police canine, whose handler picked up and carried the animal over to bite the defendant, told his lawyer Friday in City Court that he wants to sue the city police department. This happened during the same court appearance in which the prosecution said it was ready for trial even though it had never seen the video of the incident.

The case against Dino Macaluso has gained notoriety for the unusual video that captured K-9 Officer Kyle Jones picking up his partner, Blair, and carrying the dog to Macaluso so it could latch on to the defendant. The dog held on to Malacuso for nearly a minute in the video.

Macaluso is accused of attempting to intentionally injure the police canine by choking and striking the dog, according to the complaint filed by Jones. Macaluso appeared in court still wearing a bandage wrapped around an elbow where he was bitten.

“It’s absurd he’s charged with injuring the canine when he’s attacked by the animal when he was on the ground and being restrained by two officers,” Assistant Public Defender William Roberts said.

Previously: Video: Troy officer carried dog toward man to bite him

~ Visit link for the horror show. ~ Note the video is actually two consecutive videos, the second, beginning 7 min in offers what's missed in the first from a slightly better angle.

In addition to the misdemeanor charge of attempting to kill or injure a police animal, Macaluso faces charges of resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration, also misdemeanors.

When Roberts raised the question of the video, which he said has been widely viewed through local media outlets, Assistant District Attorney George Sexton said he did not have a copy of it. That’s when Sexton notified City Court Judge Chris Maier the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office was ready for trial. The judge set Aug. 30 as the next appearance for Macaluso.

Donald W. Cook, a Los Angles civil rights attorney who viewed the video, called it “outrageous” to see how the dog was deployed.

“I have read in excess of over 2,000 police reports of police dog bite attacks; I have NEVER ran across an incident like this — the dog handler carries his dog over to the suspect (who's in the grasp of other officers obviously trying to get him handcuffed) & directs the dog to attack the suspect,” Cook said in an email.

In court, Macaluso told Roberts that he wanted to sue the Troy police. Roberts said he would have to get another attorney for that legal proceeding. Macaluso was treated for the dog bite at a local hospital after he was arrested.

The city settled a $3 million police brutality lawsuit filed against Jones for $60,000 in Nov. 2014.

Macaluso, 52, was sent back to the Rensselaer County Jail where he is being held for a parole violation. His parole for a case involving fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property is scheduled to expire on April, 22, 2020, according to state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision online inmate records.

Houston Cop Charged with Murder in Botched Drug Raid; 2nd Cop Charged in
Strong words from Houston Police Officers Union President Joe Gamaldi

by
Carlos Miller

Former Houston police officer Gerald Goines and his partner Steven Bryant are both facing serious charges.
The Houston cop who was hailed as a hero for engaging in a bloody firefight with two drugs suspects during a January no-knock raid has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Gerald Goines is also being investigated for allegedly stealing guns, drugs and money. His partner, Steven Bryant, was charged with witness tampering.

The raid uncovered no evidence that the couple killed during the raid, Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas, were dealing heroin.
Both men are expected to turn themselves in today, according to the Houston Chronicle. And both retired in the weeks after the incident when it became apparent the police narrative was falling apart.
Prosecutors who are reviewing more than 2,000 cases involving the two cops have already dismissed dozens of cases.
The incident took place on J

Court rules Tennessee can’t withhold public records just because of a criminal investigation
“Under the state’s position, even public records accessible via the TPRA for years prior may abruptly become exempt from disclosure, an astonishing proposition.”
Written by Kent Hoover
Edited by JPat Brown
Last week, the Tennessee Court of Appeals ruled that state agencies can’t withhold public records just because they’re relevant to a criminal investigation.
At issue was a public records request from a Nashville television reporter for travel receipts, credit card bills, telephone records, emails and other documents for the acting director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and another state official. The request was prompted by a tip from the TBI official’s wife, who said her husband was having an affair with an official with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, and that they may have used state resources to carry on the affair.
In 2018, the state rejected NewsChannel 5 reporter Phil Williams’ request for these public records, contending they were exempt from disclosure since they were part of an ongoing criminal investigation. Williams and the television station filed a lawsuit to compel these records’ release. But before the case was heard, the state completed its criminal investigation, and then disclosed the records.
So this particular case was moot, but the legal question wasn’t. Are ordinary records of a state agency - not investigative files - exempt from the Tennessee Public Records Act when they become part of a criminal investigation?
On August 16th, the Tennessee Court of Appeals ruled such records aren’t exempt from the TPRA.
“We hold that non-investigative public records made in the ordinary course of business, capable of being accessed from their inception by citizens of Tennessee, do not become exempt from disclosure because of the initiation of a criminal investigation in which they become relevant,” the court ruled, in an opinion written by Chief Justice D. Michael Swiney.

Assessing the Boundaries of Public Criminology: On What Does (Not) Count
The author interrogates the project of a “public criminology” and assesses what counts as scholarly engagement within this criminological framework through an analysis of its objectives, publics, and practices. In this context, Piché criticizes public criminology for pursuing a reformist agenda that buttresses the status quo and fails to promote struggle with those most affected by interpersonal and state violence. The article argues that penal abolitionism can push the boundaries of “public criminology” by challenging dominant notions of criminalization and punishment and working in solidarity with those most affected by state violence.

In 1975 at age 46, James "Whitey" Bulger was a prominent figure in South Boston's underworld and a member of the Winter Hill gang, the constant rival of Boston's Cosa Nostra family. In a time when tensions between the two groups mounted over the placement of vending machines throughout the region, Bulger was approached by FBI agent John Connolly, who a few years after Bulger had grown up in the same public housing project in South Boston. Connolly made a simple proposal: inform on the Mafia and let the FBI do the rest. Bulger agreed and brought his friend and partner Steve Flemmi into the deal because he had direct ties to leading Cosa Nostra members.
In 1976 Bulger and Flemmi threatened a restaurant owner who refused to repay an outstanding debt to a Bosto

FOIA 101: Appealing fees in Massachusetts
Lessons on how to approach a charge for your Massachusetts documents
Written by Ava Sasani
Edited by Beryl Lipton
You submit the perfect public records request. Weeks pass. With each one that goes by, you call and email the agency for some word of the files your future might hold. Finally, a FOIA officer replies to the most recent plea for documents. But when you open their email, your heart drops: your beloved agency is charging you a public records fee.
Don’t panic! If an agency or organization charges you for public records, in lots of states, you can appeal the fees, just as you would appeal a denial of records.
Back in June, I submitted a request for documents from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Roughly one month later, the University’s records officer wrote back with a bill for $2,200.

This week’s FOIA round-up: Back-to-school edition
You’re no fool. You read the FOIA round-up.
Written by Beryl Lipton
Edited by Michael Morisy
In this week’s FOIA round-up, we take a look at the news on schools brought to you by public records and highlight some of MuckRock’s requests and projects.
Data from Seattle suggests that students’ access to recess can be broken down in racial terms. In North Carolina, lawyers for the University of North Carolina are back in court to prevent the release of names of known sexual misconduct perpetrators. In Illinois, public record requests are the only way to learn the reasons behind certain university employee terminations. And, at the University of Michigan, the defense of former president Lou Anna Simon and her handling of serial sex offender Larry Nasser has a price tag approaching $1 million.
See a great use of public records we missed? Send over your favorite FOIA stories via email, on Twitter, or on Facebook, and maybe we’ll include them in the next round-up. And if you’d like even more inspiration, read past round-ups.
UNC, required to release sexual misconduct records, goes to the state Supreme Court
In April 2018 the North Carolina Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the University of North Carolina will need to provide records detailing the names and violations of individuals found guilty of rape or sexual assault by the university. UNC tried to argue that the records were exempt from disclosure under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which the Court of Appeals found unconvincing. Now the college has taken the case to the state’s Supreme Court.
The initial request for information about the crimes was submitted in November 2016 by a team of new outlets including WRAL, The Charlotte Observer, and The Daily Tar Heel, the university’s daily student newspaper.
You can read more about the ongoing court battles on The Daily Tar Heel.
Records reveal true reasons behind firings at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
A joint investigation by NPR Illinois and ProPublica has revealed that terminations at the largest college in the state were sometimes conducted to prevent employees’ shortcomings from ever reaching the public. Terminations were often accompanied by confidentiality clauses, which limited the university from proactively discussing the conditions of the departures. Public records requests, like those submitted by NPR Illinois, are one of the only ways to get access to these details. While the college has said it will no longer be including such provisions in its agreements, these clauses are commonly used at other universities.
You can read the whole story on ProPublica or NPR Illinois.
Is recess a racial issue? In Seattle, the data suggests that it is.
Data and reporting in Seattle suggest that students at whiter, more affluent schools get 15 minutes or more recess than students at schools where the population is poorer or of color. Recess data was obtained via a public records request to Seattle Public Schools. More than half of black students attend a low-recess school.
You can read the report on KUOW.

FURTHER EVIDENCE OF NEED TO CREATE INDEPENDENT FEDERAL AGENCY TO
INVESTIGATE THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT

______

HON. JAMES A. TRAFICANT, JR.

of ohio

in the house of representatives

Friday, June 9, 2000

Mr. TRAFICANT. Mr. Speaker, earlier this year I introduced
legislation, H.R. 4105, to establish an independent federal agency to
investigate allegations of wrongdoing on the part of Justice Department
personnel. As part of my ongoing efforts to have this important
legislation enacted into law, I have been investigating allegations of
wrongdoing within the Justice Department that have not been
appropriately and completed investigated and prosecuted.
One of the incidents I uncovered occurred in my own Congressional
District, and it involves serious allegations of misconduct on the part
of the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in Youngstown, Ohio. The
attached sworn affidavit makes serious allegations that should be
aggressively investigated by the Justice Department and Congress.

State of Ohio, County of Trumbull--Affidavit of James A. Kerchum

After having been duly sworn in accordance with law, I,
James A. Kerchum, hereby depose and say:
(1) I, James A. Kerchum, was an active participant of the
Mahoning Valley Corruption Task Force during the approximate
period of February 1998 thru April 23, 1999.
(2) During the period of February 1998 thru April 23, 1999,
I primarily planned and

worked with the following people: Louis Slay, Director
Supervisor U.S. Dept. of Justice; Anthony Sporanza, Special
Agent FBI; Mike Cizmar, Special Agent FBI; Pete Proach,
Special Agent FBI; Wally Sines, Special Agent FBI; and Dennis
Direnzo, Agent BCI & I
(3) During the hereinabove written time period I was
primarily a paid informant for the FBI and my FBI Code Name
was Cheeze 1. My main FBI contact was Special Agent Mike
Cizmar.
(4) During the hereinabove written time period, FBI Special
Agent Mike Cizmar related the following to me:
(a) Congressman Jim Traficant was the FBI's number one
target across the United States because he beat them in a
Federal Court in Cleveland, Ohio in 1983 and that he was an
embarrassment to the FBI.
(b) The FBI investigated Jim Traficant from the time he was
the Mahoning County Sheriff and that the FBI was going to get
him one way or another.
(c) When you go to Quantico, Virginia there is one special
class you take and that's on getting Jim Traficant.
(d) If I got Jim Traficant, they would build a monument for
me in Washington, D.C.
FBI Special Agent Anthony Sporanza also made statements in
support of the hereinabove written.
(5) Within the herinabove written time period FBI Special
Agent Mike Cizmar asked me to kill Girard, Ohio Police
Detective Anthony Zuppo.
Further Affiant Sayeth Naught.

David Burnham—an award-winning former New York Times reporter and a pioneering data journalist—is the co-founder and co-director of the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), a joint project between the Newhouse School and the Whitman School based here at Newhouse.
TRAC specializes in using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to obtain federal government administrative records. It performs sophisticated statistical analyses on the records it collects to make sense of and verify these complex relational files with millions of individual, case-by-case records. TRAC then builds data mining tools that enable it—along with journalists, policy makers, citizens and other researchers—to analyze and assess federal policies and practices. TRAC's information is utterly unique in the marketplace of ideas, and its findings are frequently cited in major news reports and research journals.
Concrete government information, much of it obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, has been central to his work as both a reporter and a researcher. Burnham started as a reporter in 1958, working for UPI, Newsweek, CBS and other organizations. From 1968 to 1986, he was an investigative reporter with The New York Times in New York and Washington, with much of his coverage concentrating on enforcement, regulatory and surveillance issues. He has written three books and numerous magazine articles. His most recent book, “Above the Law: Secret Deals, Political Fixes, and Other Misadventures of the U.S. Department of Justice,” was published by Scribner in 1996.  His investigative book on the Internal Revenue Service, “A Law Unto Itself: Power, Politics and the IRS,” was published in 1990 by Random House. A third book, “The Rise of the Computer State,” was published in 1984.
Over the years, Burnham has received a number of professional honors including the George Polk Award for Community Service, Long Island University, 1968; the Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship, 1987; the Best Investigative Book of 1990, Investigative Reporters and Editors, 1990; and the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, Bellagio, Italy, 1992. In 2003, Burnham was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Humane Letters from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In 2006, he was inducted into the National Freedom of Information Act Hall of Fame.
Burnham works out of Washington, D.C.

Recent reporting on the DWI arrests involving members of the Cliffside Park Police Department – along with a deeply troubling video – paints a disturbing picture that seems to underlie an emerging trend among too many law enforcement officers in whom we place our faith every day.
As Steve Janoski and Kristie Cattafi of NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey reported, since May, local and state authorities have arrested two of the borough's sworn police officers and two of its special police officers for colliding with cars or poles after allegedly driving drunk.
Then there is the video, recorded in the early hours of Aug. 3 from a dashboard camera, which shows another poli

“Natural Causes Killed Victor: A Death in Solitary,” a folk opera by George Swanson (DVD, 55 minutes)
Loaded on JAN. 10, 2017 by Lance Tapley published in Prison Legal News January, 2017, page 16
Filed under: Commentary/Reviews, Reviews, Immigration, Control Units, Tapes/Music. Location: Maine.

Written by George Swanson, a folksinger and Episcopal priest, this unusual folk opera tells how Victor Valdez, a sickly, working-class immigrant from the Dominican Republic, died in 2009 in solitary confinement at the Maine State Prison – and how the causes of his death were covered up.
The state prosecutor who investigated the case determined that Victor died of “natural causes.” True, he needed kidney dialysis and had other ailments, but a number of other prisoners said he had not been given proper medical care and had been physically abused. In fact, one prisoner had predicted to an advocate that the abuse would likely kill Victor.
I wrote the newspaper article, “A Prison Obituary: The Tragedy of Victor Valdez,” which was the basis for the opera. George Swanson has long worked with me and many others in a campaign to end or restrict the use of solitary in Maine and nationally. He successfully convinced the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) to take on the issue.
NRCAT’s founding director, the Rev. Richard Killmer, said the opera “shows the immorality of solitary confinement.” Bonnie Kerness, director of the American Friends Service Committee’s Prison Watch, called it an “amazing” production.
The performance in the video demonstrates what can be done with this work in a small community by an unpaid cast. It is amateur – some singers are good, others sketchy – but this quality gives it charm and paradoxical power. The feeling for the subject on the part of the singers – new to the issue – is evident.
The songs have their origin in beloved folk or ecclesiastical music, but Swanson has a talent for Kurt Weill-like lyrics that succinctly, vividly tell a story. The production takes place in a beautiful old church.
To me, the most plaintive line in the opera – taken from prisoners’ testimony – is Victor’s cry, as guards dragged him to his death: “What did I do? What did I do?”
The answer: He was a brown-skinned, handicapped, sick immigrant who spoke poor English and was a pain in the ass to the guards.
“May God have mercy on all of us involved in this callous display of disrespect for human life and dignity,” commented Rev. Stan Moody, the prison chaplain, when Victor died.
Ed. Note: This is the first time PLN has published an opera review.
A DVD of the premiere performance of this opera is free to prisoners, their families, advocates and nonprofits; $10.00 to others. For a DVD, email lance.tapley@gmail.com or write to me at 8 Winter St., No. 1, Augusta, ME 04330. Included is a 36-page illustrated booklet with the libretto and background information. Checks should be made payable to George Swanson. Disclosure: Swanson pays my sideline consulting business a small monthly fee to stimulate showings and new productions.

Exclusive Interview with FBI Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds

By Khatchig Mouradian • on August 21, 2009 • Email This Post

On April 23, 2007, I sat down in Washington, D.C. with FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds for an extensive interview, which was published in the Armenian Weekly and on ZNet and widely circulated. On Aug. 18, 2009, I conducted a follow-up phone interview with Edmonds, who was visiting New Zealand. The interview is an overview of what has transpired in her case since 2007, with emphasis on her deposition in the Schmidt vs. Krikorian case in Ohio earlier this month.

Edmonds, an FBI language specialist, was fired from her job with the FBI’s Washington Field Office in March 2002. Her crime was reporting security breaches, cover-ups, blocking of intelligence, and the bribery of U.S. individuals including high-ranking officials. The “state secrets privilege” has often been invoked to block court proceedings on her case, and the U.S. Congress has even been gagged to prevent further discussion.Edmonds uncovered, for example, a covert relationship between Turkish groups and former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), who reportedly received tens of thousands of dollars in bribes in return for withdrawing the Armenian Genocide Resolution from the House floor in 2000.

Born in Iran in 1970, Edmonds received her BA in criminal justice and psychology from George Washington University, and her MA in public policy and international commerce from George Mason University. She is the founder and director of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC) and in 2006 received the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award. She speaks Turkish, Farsi, and Azerbaijani.

Below is the full transcript of the follow-up interview.

***

Khatchig Mouradian—I asked you in 2007 what had changed during the five years since 2002, when you first contacted the Senate

Scroll to bottom

“I don't know what reasons they had, why they just didn't do money. They needed -- I was trained as a language specialist by my agent for -- to find personal information, and one of the things that we was taught in the FBI -- everyone was taught in the counterintelligence -- that the target U.S. persons, whether they are in Congress or executive branch or whatever, first go by foreign entities to what they refer to as hooking period, and it was very common; it's a very common way of trying to find vulnerability, and that is sexual, financial, any other kinds of greeds, and it was -- it was done a lot, was being done a lot, and in some cases certain people from Pentagon would send a list of individuals with access to sensitive data, whether weapons technology or nuclear technology, and this information would include all their sexual preference, how much they owed on their homes, if they have gambling issues, and the State Department, high level State Department person would provide it to these foreign operatives, and those foreign operatives then would go and hook those Pentagon people, whether they were at RAND or some other Air Force base.

And then the hooking period would take some times. Sometimes it takes months, sometimes one year. They would ask for small favor, but eventually after they reviewed the targets that the U.S. person -- some small favor, then they would go blackmail and that person would give them everything, nuclear related information, weapons related information. It always worked for them. So it was not always money.

[...]

So there were a lot of things that certain field office had provided me to go over, and some of that I didn't complete, but one example would be with regard to Mr. Hastert. For example, he used the townhouse that was not his residence for certain not very morally accepted activities.

Now, whether that was being used as blackmail I don't know, but the fact that foreign entities knew about this, in fact, they sometimes participated in some of those not maybe morally well activities in that particular townhouse that was supposed to be an office, not a house, residence at certain hours, certain days, evenings of the week.

So I can't say if that was used as blackmail or not, but certain activities they would share. They were known.”

Several Charges Dropped in 'False Statements' Case Following FBI Whistleblower's Testimony
Rep. Jean Schmidt drops four claims in Ohio election case, following deposition by formerly-gagged Turkish-American translator Sibel Edmonds, adds another

The news comes on the heels of last Saturday's deposition by the FBI's former Turkish-American translator Sibel Edmonds who had been subpoenaed last week to testify in the case. The whistleblower had been previous-gagged by two different assertions of the "state secrets" privilege during the Bush Administration. She was finally able to testify on Saturday, under oath, about alleged infiltration, bribery, and blackmail by Turkish agents, of current and former members of the U.S. Congress and other high ranking officials in the Departments of State and Defense. The BRAD BLOG covered the stunning deposition as it happened last Saturday.
Schmidt had challenged Krikorian's claim, during his 2008 independent campaign against her, that she accepted "blood money" from Turkish agents in exchange for helping to block a Congressional resolut

Howie Carr: Mobster Stephen ‘The Rifleman’ Flemmi admits bribing FBI agents, cops, state police

Flemmi has testified in the past about paying off Boston FBI agents, but during cross-examination, Weadick’s lawyer ran down the names again for the jury of 12 women and 6 men.
Flemmi said the agents he was paying off included John “Zip” Connolly, John “Vino” Morris, “Doc” Gianturco, Michael Buckley and John “Agent Orange” Newton.
FBI agent Newton at one point gave Bulger and Flemmi 40 pounds of C4 plastic explosives, Flemmi said.
State Trooper Richard Schneiderman was on the gang’s payroll for $1,000 a month, Flemmi testified.
Flemmi, whose nickname is “The Rifleman,” said the gang also gave presents to several FBI agents, including a gold ring to Dennis Condon, who later became Gov. Mike Dukakis’ secretary of public safety. In prior testimony, Flemmi has said the gang gave a diamond ring to Connolly and a $500 pipe to supervisory agent James Ring, whom the gang nicknamed “The Pipe.”
In all, Flemmi said, Connolly grabbed $235,000 in payoffs, “and maybe more.” In return, he gave the gang the names of informants who were then murdered.
“He gave us information and we acted on it,” Flemmi said. “I have been dealing with law enforcement my entire life and I have been paying them off my entire life.”

Abstract
Of all federal government agencies in the U.S. from the 1930's to the 1980's, the Federal Bureau of Investigation probably had the most successful media relations program. The Bureau's leaders seemed to be masters at getting good publicity and avoiding bad.
By describing a quantitative analysis of the FBI's publicity over that 50-year period, this article attempts to show why those efforts were so successful. It identifies the themes that typified the verbal component of Bureau publicity, and the broad spectrum of mass communication channels that were tapped.

The Harvard Prison Divestment Campaign hosted “Free-Them Week” this week to promote prison divestment at the University through a series of seminars, office hours, and workshops.
HPDC launched the week’s events by delivering a 64-page report — released last Wednesday — detailing what they say are the University’s investments in companies with ties to the prison industry to Massachusetts Hall Monday.
The report estimated the University has at least $3 million invested in companies with such ties. It also demanded the University divest and disclose all endowment holdings in companies connected to the industry.
On Wednesday night, students gathered at Harvard Law School for a seminar about connecting Jewish values to calls for divestment and dismantling the U.S. prison system. Participants drew parallels between contemporary prisons and the historic confinement of Jewish people as a basis for solidarity.
