So who is Roy Ames? Two of Dean Corll's victims had been buried together at the boat shed location in what was marked gravesite #5. These were bodies #9 and #10, belonging to Donald and Jerry Waldrop. Two brothers aged fifteen and thirteen respectively. Bizarrely, found on top of body #9, Donald Waldrop, was a partially filled out Houston Police report. Which is to say, Dean Corll had buried these two brothers with a partially filled out Houston police report. But body #9 wasn't the only one buried with a Houston police report. One had also been found beneath body #3 in gravesite #3, which had belonged to Marty Ray Jones(18). These two Houston PD reports, possible the same one in two separate parts, were never booked into evidence with the rest of the items found in the graves. Instead, the officer who had recovered them placed them inside a lockbox back at the police station33. And they are never mentioned again in any of the available case files. They just vanish. Which draws into question the circumstances surrounding the boat shed dig.
The boat shed excavation began around 6.30pm on the 8th of August. Gravesites #1, #2, and #3 were unearthed in that order. After the police report had been found in gravesite #3, detectives at the scene were replaced with new ones. This occurred at approximately 10.45pm before gravesite #4 had been discovered. Gravesite #4 was unearthed sometime after 10.45pm, after which the crime scene was shutdown for the evening at 11.55pm and handed over to an overnight patrol unit34. Digging then resumed on the 9th of August at 11.30am with gravesite #5, which was eventually unearthed at 12.05pm(aprox) where the second police report was found on top of body #9, Donald Waldrop35.
Dean Corll, for some reason, had buried police reports in gravesite #3 and #5. But he had also buried, for some reason, documents identifying the bodies of Donald and Jerry Waldrop in gravesite #5, with two other bodies in gravesite #8. These were an identification card and social security card for an EDWARD WALDROP, who was Donald & Jerry Waldrop's older brother and whose ID Donald Waldrop had been using when he went missing; and a hospital ID card for Jerry Waldrop that identified his parents as Everett & Mary Inez 36. So Dean Corll had buried the Waldrop brothers in gravesite #5 along with a partially filled out police report. Then buried documents identifying thr Waldrop brothers with two other bodies buried in gravesite #8. Why the Waldrop brothers out of 26 other victims?
Well, on the same day all this was discovered, that is on the 9th of August 1973, the father of Donald and Jerry Waldrop, Everett Waldrop, called Houston PD and inquired if any of the bodies had been those of his two youngest boys, reported missing back in 1971. Then Everett Waldrop gave Houston PD the names of two men he said his boys had been mixed up with at the time of their disappearance. The names he gave them were Bill Walls and Roy Ames37.
Everett Waldrop had also given police this information back in February 1971 when his boys first went missing. As part of a missing persons report he had stated that he thought his boys were with a man named Roy Ames who “gathers kids and takes movies”38.
So we have:
— A letter from a Californian informant sent on the 24th of August that mentions Roy Ames knew Dean Corll and had photographed some of Dean Corll's victims.
— A missing persons report filed by the father of two victims back in 1971 which states he thought his boys were with a man named Roy Ames.
— A statement by Guy Strait of the DOMLyric ring in California that he knew a child pornographer in Houston named Roy Ames.
Then, on the 22nd of December 1973, Houston PD received information from another informant in California, Richard Van Payne, who stated “that he had been in the WAREHOUSE in Houston and had seen photographs of the dead boys in the mass murder”. He also gave police the name John Norman as a person of interest39.
Sometime in December 1973, the U.S Postal Service had raided a warehouse in Houston, Texas from which was seized four tons of child pornography. And this warehouse belonged to a man named Roy Clifton Ames40. Also discovered were letters addressed to Ames from a Roger D. Smith, which outlined the sale and purchase of films depicting scenes of children in sexual bondage. In one of the letters Smith had written that a particular child pornography film would have been better if the producers had 'tossed in a stiff 14-year old'41.
Finally, in February 1975 another Houston warehouse belonging to Roy Ames was raided. And this time two tons of child pornography were seized, and here it is, police identified 11 of Dean Corll's victims as those featured in the pornographic materials found42.
Which leave us with this:
And even still, Roy Ames was never seriously investigated by Houston PD. He was charged and sentenced after the raids, and then later for other child pornography crimes, for which he was incarcerated from 1975-198543. From what little information that can be found on him, Roy Ames had been a well established music producer whose label, Clarity music, had exploited blues musicians in the Houston area. Record of his child pornography activities is scant. Most of what can be found on him involves copyright suits. The connection between him and Dean Corll was never made, even though it was clearly there.
And that was that. Dean Corll was dead. Henley and Brooks received life sentences. The jury who convicted them lambasted the district attorney and Houston PD for "leaving unexplored the possible involvement of others and related criminal activities"44. Which shows the oddness of this case was not lost on those presented with it at the time. And there were pits and pieces, statements made by police about the case which did make their way into the press, casting better light on the 'unexplained' circumstances surrounding it.
But interesting bits of information about the case leaked out here and there over the years to come.
A newspaper reported in 1976,” 'We knew that they were shipping kids – boy prostitutes – back forth to the West Coast in the Ames deal,' Contreras said. . .It was some sort of shuttle service. Ames and some of his people were engaged in this. They would send California kids here and Houston kids to California.”45.
This contention is evidenced by the fact both informants, Steven Ahern and Richard Van Payne, who had given Houston PD tips on the Roy Ames operation had been from California. While on the other hand, David Brooks also stated that Houston kids killed by Corll had been bound for California46.
In a 1977 Chicago Tribune investigative series was the interesting paragraph: “Dallas police told Sgt. Ronald Kelly, head of the Area 6 youth division, that they have information associating Norman with the ring that helped transport to Texas the 27 boys murdered in Houston in 1973 in a widely publicised sex and sadism case."47.
So what about John Norman? Well, his network continued to operate well into the late 1970s and became linked to another series child murders, attributed to a serial killer by the name John Wayne Gacy. Which will be covered in a subsequent article. But for now, what can be made of this from putting together the fragments of evidence?
At least in part, John Norman in Dallas was operating a procurement and distribution network for two groups producing child pornography in Houston and California. Child prostitution was apart of this to. His network was an intermediary between the two, sending boys from California to Houston and boys from Houston to California. In this way, the network was able to isolate boys from their locality and make them reliant on the network for lodging, expenses etc. This made them more compliant and willing to accept the things asked of them they hadn't signed on for, such as sadomasochist pornography. Trafficking boys across state lines also created a jurisdictional nightmare for local law enforcement agencies at a time when federal ones where either disinterested in these crimes or covering them up.
Roy Ames used Dean Corll to recruit boys for John Norman in Dallas who would send them onto LA. It is also likely Roy Ames used Dean Corll as an adult actor in sadomasochist pornography, which possibly escalated into the production of snuff films sold on the European black market. This isn't really that speculative. We know Dean Corll raped, tortured, and murdered at least 11 children also used by Roy Ames to produce child pornography. This happened in Houston, which is a port city. We also know that the S&M child pornography Roy Ames produced ended up on the European market. And one of his customers even expressed interest in a snuff film in a letter written to Ames. All the ingredients are there. In fact, the only argument to be made against this would be:
1) They didn't think of it.
2) They did think of it but didn't do it. Either due to moral objection, or because it wasn't profitable enough to be worth the risk.
The absence of hard evidence for this, that being the existence of an actual snuff film found, would be attributed to such an item being high risk and in high demand(?). It is unlikely such an item would be circulated locally, or left lying around in storage for police to discover. A snuff film would most likely be made to order, and forgive the use of this insensitive analogy, but much like an expensive custom luxury item that is request, made, then shipped to the customer. Moreover, it would also seem as if some members of the Houston PD were involved in a cover of the Roy Ames association with Dean Corll. The police report which Dean Corll assumably buried with two of his victims was found on one directly linked to Roy Ames through a missing persons report filed by the father two years prior to the body being discovered. And this police report never found its way into evidence. Roy Ames was never investigated in regards to the murders despite multiple leads pointing towards him. In addition to this there was the State Department destroying John Norman's client list discovered by Dallas PD. So there is evidence for a lack of evidence being attributed to a cover-up of evidence.
What has been covered is just an introductory to a much larger network which continued to operate in many more cities for many more years to come. A network linked to John Wayne Gacy, the Oakland County Child Killer, and possibly the Atlanta Child Murders. What is of interest here is not serial killers or isolated incidents, but patterns of behaviour, broad in scope and of a specific type of cruelty, closely associated to, if not directly related with, high powered individuals within the modern institutions of industrial societies – religious, business, political, or otherwise. This isn't conspiracy, it is custom, and one so rotten it cannot clean up after itself well enough to disguise what has become readily observable to those who won't advert their eyes.

In one letter, Smith wrote that he had been buying this explicit material for about five years. In another letter, Smith commented that a particular child pornography film would have been better if the manufacturers had "tossed in a stiff 14-year old." In another letter, Smith wrote that he possessed 650 slides of hard-core sexual activity involving children and "who knows how many B & W sets, all of which are enjoyably reviewed from time-to-time."
