Amazon Prime Video Starts Charging Extra To Avoid Ads, As The Enshittification Of Streaming Video Truly Begins
Business Models
from the this-is-why-we-can't-have-nice-things dept
Wed, Jan 31st 2024 09:25am - Karl Bode
Starting this week, Amazon Prime Video customers (who already pay $140 per year) will be charged $3 extra every month just to avoid ads that didn’t previously exist. Shifting toward ad-based tiers has been popular among streaming companies like Netflix, Max, Disney+, and Paramount. But whereas those services make a cheaper ad-based tier an opt-in choice for consumers, Amazon isn’t being so subtle:
“A key piece of Amazon’s ad model is that they are throwing you into its ad-filled tier as its default when you originally could watch Prime Video

Automakers Look To Neuter Maine ‘Right To Repair’ Bill Under The Pretense Of Privacy Concerns
from the this-is-why-we-can't-have-nice-things dept
Wed, Jan 31st 2024 01:42pm - Karl Bode
Last November, Maine residents voted overwhelmingly (83 percent) to pass a new state right to repair law designed to make auto repairs easier and more affordable. More specifically, the law requires that automakers standardize on-board diagnostic systems and provide remote access to those systems and mechanical data to consumers and third-party independent repair shops.
But as we’ve seen with other states that have passed right to reform laws (most notably New York), passing the law isn’t the end of the story. Corporate lobbyists have had great success not just watering these laws down before passage, but after voters approve them.
In Maine, lawmakers have been trying to convince Republican and

As you’ve likely heard, this morning the Senate did one of its semi-regular hearings in which it drags tech CEOs in front of clueless Senators who make nonsense pronouncements in hopes of getting a viral clip to show up on the very social media they’re pretending to demonize, but which they rely on to pretend to their base that they’re leading the culture war moral panic against social media.
Meanwhile, Senator Ron Wyden has (yet again) released a bill that will get little (if any) attention, but which actually seeks to help protect children. Reps. Eshoo and Fitzpatrick have introduced the companion bill in the House.
As we’ve discussed multiple times, all evidence suggests that the internet companies are actually doing an awful lot to stop child exploitation online, which involves tracking

THE TERROR FACTORY BY TREVOR AARONSON
A groundbreaking work of investigative journalism into the FBI’s questionable counter-terrorism tactics, The Terror Factory exposes how the Bureau built a network of more than 15,000 informants after 9/11 whose primary purpose was to infiltrate Muslim communities to create and facilitate phony terrorist plots so that the Bureau could then claim it was winning the war on terror.
This tenth anniversary edition of The Terror Factory further updates the activities of the FBI over the past decade, focusing on the Justice Department’s prosecution of hundreds of defendants on international terrorism charges that emerged from FBI stings. In many of these stings, informants or undercover agents provided all the money and weapons for the terrorist plot, and sometimes even the ideas — raising significant questions about whether any of these people would have committed crimes were it not for the FBI’s encouragement. This new edition of the book also examines how the FBI is assigning informants to infiltrate right-wing groups, in order to expand the Bureau’s counter-terrorism program beyond Muslim Americans.

Steele on AE911Truth’s Supreme Court challenge; McKee with a PowerPoint on Lloyde England and his place in the 9/11 cover-up

Greetings all,

We have a very interesting teleconference planned for you this Wednesday night.

The first of our two speakers will be Andy Steele, who will talk about AE911Truth's Supreme Court petition challenging a lower court's ruling in the organization’s case against NIST. The court previously ruled that as long they meet statutory requirements, federal agency reports do not have to be scientifically accurate. This has major implications not only for 9/11 but for any issue that depends on science.

Andy’s talk will be followed by a PowerPoint presentation by Craig McKee about the importance of the Lloyde England evidence to the exposing the cover-up of what happened at the Pentagon. Craig will also share a screen shot of a Facebook comment by an official story supporter who may have accidentally revealed his actual agenda. Decide for yourselves what it means…

We hope you can join us for two very interesting 9/11 presentations!

Craig McKee

If Twitter Had Competent Legal Staff, This Gag Order Over A Warrant On Trump’s Account Might Have Been Interesting, Instead…
Legal Issues
from the the-website-was-inoperative dept
Thu, Aug 10th 2023 09:32am - Mike Masnick
So, you might have heard the news about how Special Counsel Jack Smith obtained a warrant for Donald Trump’s Twitter account data, that Twitter resisted, and was fined $350,000 before handing over the data, and (finally) that Twitter lost an appeal about all of this, leading to most of the details being unsealed by the DC Circuit.
There is a lot going on here, and much of the coverage and hand-wringing about this is misplaced or misleading. As a quick summary, before we get into the details, it does look like the DOJ properly sought and obtained a warrant which obligates Twitter to respond. It also got a separate gag order, which can be questionable, and which companies sometimes fight off (though, also, can be okay in specific circumstances) and, finally, there might have been an interesting legal fight over the gag order, in particular, if Twitter hadn’t fucked stuff up.
Now, the details. From the DC Circuit ruling we get this one paragraph summary:
The district court issued a search warrant in a criminal case, directing appellant Twitter, Inc. (“Twitter”) to produce information to the government

South Dakota’s Top Court Reaffirms Its Refusal To Consider Polygraph Tests To Be Actual ‘Evidence’ Of Anything
Legal Issues
from the still-garbage,-no-matter-how-it's-used dept
Wed, Aug 9th 2023 12:08pm - Tim Cushing
It has been known for years that polygraph tests can be beaten. This supposed thing of science can be manipulated to clear guilty people if guilty people know how to trick it.
But law enforcement still likes polygraph tests because they can also be exploited in the other direction. When it’s your word against the word of the supposed polygraph expert, any amount of insignificant needle squiggles can be presented as an admission of guilt.
That’s why some law enforcement officials think people who teach people to beat lie detectors should be put in jail. And that’s why at least one federal law enforcement official thinks anyone calling polygraph testing into question should, at the very least, be subject to criminal investigations.
Like any junk science used most often by law enforcement, polygraph tests can be a double-edged sword. Every so often, the “test” clears somebody. That’s such a rarity that it’s rarely discussed. But it’s being discussed again in South Dakota, where a criminal defendant hoped his polygraph test would considered evidence of his innocence.
Casey Bonhorst was killed by a single shot after delivering a Domino’s pizza to a Sioux Falls home on the evening of February 26, 2020. Both Banks and Jahennessy Bryant admitted they were there. But each man claimed that he was only the lookout and that the other man pulled the trigger.

Tacoma cop fired after female officer's neck restraint complaint

Police committee calls for transparency
Members of Tacoma's Community Police Advisory Committee said the lack of transparency surrounding the complaints against Morse and his firing two months ago bolsters the committee's request for greater oversight authority from city officials. The committee, known as CPAC, makes policy recommendations and reviews civilian complaint investigations. Members have said a more transparent internal affairs process would increase trust among community members.
CPAC has proposed a system where it would be notified of all internal affairs complaints almost immediately and have a full-time staffer to track the investigative process. CPAC currently gets quarterly reports summarizing completed internal investigations, but only those started by civilians. Members have to file public records requests for full reports, and the complaints lodged by officers against their colleagues never go before the committee.
