Dr. Frederic Whitehurst is a former FBI scientist who “blew the whistle” on misconduct within the FBI crime lab, resulting in extensive reforms being made. He was America’s first successful FBI whistleblower. His case exposed forensic fraud in the FBI crime lab and subjected it to outside oversight for the first time. The investigation to date has resulted in several exonerations, reversals of convictions, and one stayed execution.

The NY Times has published a graphic with 4 separate graphs on it daily, since close to the start of the pandemic.  It received all the information in the graphs (and probably the graphics themselves) from the CDC.
The graphs provided the number of cases, ordinary hospitalizations, tests performed and deaths.

Yesterday afternoon, Wendell Woodman, a freelance political columnist based at the State House, in Boston, blasted out an e-mail containing a column he wrote in 1995 in which he speculated that Felt was Deep Throat. The column was preceded by an introductory note stating that Woodman had actually fingered Felt as far back as the early 1970s.
Here is the column - and you've got to love the Florida voting-fraud angle. Some things never change. I've fixed a few spellings of names.
No, Diane Sawyer was not "Deep Throat," as Rabbi Baruch Korff, an old confidante of President Nixon, suggested Monday for the amusement of AP.
Diane may be Deep Flattered. But "Deep Throat" was Mark Felt.
The Associated Press attributed the rabbi's guess to the fact that Diane was an assistant to White House Press Secretary Ron Ziegler in 1972. AP promptly added Diane into the sauce with former FBI director L. Patrick Gray and then-National Security deputy Alexander Haig as Throat candidates.
Author Bob Woodward of the Washington Post and "All The President's Men" insists the source who helped him and fellow reporter Carl Bernstein break the Watergate story was a guy.
That would be Mark Felt.
After three Miami television stations projected the results of the September, 1970 primary elections in Florida's Dade County "down to the last digit" as soon as the polls closed, Henry Petersen, who headed the U.S. Justice Department's Criminal Division, was instructed to begin an investigation.
Throughout 1971 and into 1972, the Nixon White House - notably Attorney General John Mitchell and Nixon aides H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman - received regular briefings. Richard Nixon, who was sure that vote fraud in Illinois and Texas had cost him the presidency in 1960, was a fanatic on the subject and in 1972 ordered Petersen to accelerate the probe.
As soon as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover died on May 2, 1972, a 27-year-old Justice Department employee named Craig C. Donsanto signed Petersen's name to a "courtesy" letter telling Democratic Congressman Claude Pepper of Miami that all hell was about to break loose. Pepper learned that Democratic National Committee offices based at the Watergate ostensibly were in cahoots with a California computing firm anxious to corner the market on the new computer voting industry and that Dade County had been a guinea pig.
Promising him assistance in his career, Pepper prevailed on Donsanto to stamp a "National Security" embargo on the FBI file. That file is still classified. But two Miami reporters, Kenneth and James Collier, managed to obtain copies of it - at about the time Bob Graham was

The 11th annual Maine Conference Investigating Crimes Committed by the FBI by will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
The conference, sponsored by Maine Citizens to Defend the Bill of Rights and the New World Coalition, a student organization at Bates, features a talk by Raymond Kohlman, an attorney who in December 1999 successfully represented the family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a lawsuit claiming the civil rights leader was the victim of a vast murder conspiracy, not a lone assassin. The King family had sued Loyd Jowers, a retired businessman who claimed six years ago that he paid someone other than James Earl Ray to kill King in Memphis, Tenn., in 1968. Kohlman claimed the FBI, CIA, the Mafia and the U.S. military were involved in the assassination.
The conference also features a talk by Hoppy Heidelberg, a member of the Oklahoma City bombing grand jury who believes the FBI was involved in the destruction of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Heidelberg, a Reform Party gubernatorial candidate in Oklahoma, also is a member of Oklahomans for Truth, a group that recently took depositions from an FBI informant who testified to the FBI’s involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing.

FBI Agent John Connolly Remains Free of Jail After Living Longer Than Expected

When disgraced former FBI agent John Connolly was released from prison in February 2021, he was expected to live about another year. 
On Thursday, the one-year anniversary of his release, Connolly was still alive and living in Massachusetts. 
Even though his one-year medical break from prison is over, he will remain free unless he “violated conditions of his medical release,” a spokesman for the Florida Commission on Offender Review told the Boston Herald.
Connolly, who has multiple melanomas and diabetes, was granted a medical release by a 2-1 vote of the commission.  
“There is nothing in his conditions that state surviving (more than a year) is a violation,” Angela Meredith from the Florida commission said. “I have no more updates on the case.”
Connolly had been serving a 40-year sentence for working with mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger. 
While working for the FBI’s Boston Field Office in the 1970s, Connolly recruited Bulger as an informant. Connolly was convicted of second-degree murder for participating in a plot to kill a Florida businessman in 1982 at the urging of Bulger, who was killed in a West Virginia prison in 2018.

OKLAHOMA CITY — A federal judge has dismissed a libel lawsuit filed by a former FBI official who was alleged to have had advance knowledge of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Oliver "Buck" Revell, a retired FBI associate deputy director, complained that a book, "The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror," accused him of allowing the mass murder of the 259 people on board the flight and 11 more on the ground.
The book, by David M. Hoffman, said Revell had prior knowledge of the bombing and pulled his son and daughter-in-law off the plane in London.

JONNA MAZET is a member and Implementation Director of the Global Virome Project Leadership Board. Jonna is a Professor of Epidemiology and Disease Ecology at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and Executive Director of the UC Davis One Health Institute. Her work focuses on global health problem solving for emerging infectious diseases and conservation challenges. She is active in international One Health education, service, and research programs, most notably in relation to pathogen emergence; disease transmission among wildlife, domestic animals, and people; and the ecological drivers of novel disease dynamics.

Currently, Jonna is the Co-Director of the US Agency for International Development’s One Health Workforce – Next Generation, an $85 million educational strengthening project to empower professionals in Central/East Africa and Southeast Asia to address complex and emerging health threats, including antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic diseases. She is the Principal Investigator of and served as the Global Director of PREDICT Project for 10 years, a greater than $200 million viral emergence early warning project under USAID’s Emerging Pandemic Threats Division. PREDICT served as an early-warning system-strengthening effort aimed at finding emerging viruses before they spread to humans. Since 2009, PREDICT has empowered partners in over 30 countries to deploy a One Health approach for zoonotic disease prevention, detection, and response, including supporting 60 laboratories in the world's most risky areas for spillover to be able to do virus discovery. [Enabling the cheaper locals to do the initial lab work before we get the best viruses for GOF development. GOF used to be called biological warfare.] Our teams have collected and tested samples from over 164,000 animals and people and detected almost 1,200 potentially zoonotic viruses, among them 160 novel coronaviruses, including multiple SARS- and MERS-like coronaviruses. PREDICT provided the proof-of-concept for the Global Virome Project.
Jonna was elected to the US National Academy of Medicine in 2013 in recognition of her successful and innovative approach to emerging environmental and global health threats and serves on the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Forum on Microbial Threats and chairs the Academies’ One Health Action Collaborative. She was appointed to the National Academies Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats, which was created to assist the federal government with critical science and policy issues related to the COVID-19 crisis and other emerging health threats.

King’s family—of which I am a member—has never believed the official story. For decades, his late widow (and my cousin), Coretta Scott King, suspected federal government involvement. In 1999, she and other surviving relatives put these suspicions to the test in a civil suit filed against Loyd Jowers, a Memphis restaurant owner who had claimed he had been paid by a local mobster to organize King’s assassination. According to Jowers, a group met at the restaurant to plan the assassination. Among them was Memphis Police Lt. Earl Clark, a skilled marksman and associate of Frank Liberto, a member of the Marcello crime family of New Orleans; and Marrell McCollough, an undercover police officer and CIA operative who posed as a member of a militant black political group known as the Invaders. McCollough was later present at the Lorraine Motel and was seen kneeling over King after the shooting.

In 1993, 25 years after the murder, Jowers claimed that he participated in a conspiracy to kill Dr. King, along with an alleged Mafia figure, Memphis police officers, and a man named Raoul. According to Jowers, one of the conspirators shot Dr. King from behind his tavern.
Wilson alleged in 1998 that shortly after the assassination, while working as an FBI agent, he took papers from the abandoned car of James Earl Ray, the career criminal who pled guilty to murdering Dr. King. Wilson claims he concealed them for 30 years. Some of the papers contained references to a Raul (the alternate spellings, Raoul and Raul, are discussed in Section I) and figures associated with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. According to Wilson, someone who later worked in the White House subsequently stole the other papers he took from Ray's car, including one with the telephone number of an FBI office.
Both the Jowers and the Wilson allegations suggest that persons other than or in addition to James Earl Ray participated in the assassination. Ray, within days of entering his guilty plea in 1969, attempted to withdraw it. Until his death in April 1998, he maintained that he did not shoot Dr. King and was framed by a man he knew only as Raoul. For 30 years, others have similarly alleged that Ray was Raoul's unwitting pawn and that a conspiracy orchestrated Dr. King's murder. These varied theories have generated several comprehensive government investigations regarding the assassination, none of which confirmed the existence of any conspiracy. However, in King v. Jowers, a recent civil suit in a Tennessee state court, a jury returned a verdict finding that Jowers and unnamed others, including unspecified government agencies, participated in a conspiracy to assassinate Dr. King.

The conference, sponsored by Maine Citizens to Defend the Bill of Rights and the New World Coalition, a student organization at Bates, features a talk by Raymond Kohlman, an attorney who in December 1999 successfully represented the family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a lawsuit claiming the civil rights leader was the victim of a vast murder conspiracy, not a lone assassin. The King family had sued Loyd Jowers, a retired businessman who claimed six years ago that he paid someone other than James Earl Ray to kill King in Memphis, Tenn., in 1968. Kohlman claimed the FBI, CIA, the Mafia and the U.S. military were involved in the assassination.
The conference also features a talk by Hoppy Heidelberg, a member of the Oklahoma City bombing grand jury who believes the FBI was involved in the destruction of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Heidelberg, a Reform Party gubernatorial candidate in Oklahoma, also is a member of Oklahomans for Truth, a group that recently took depositions from an FBI informant who testified to the FBI’s involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing.

In the case of the conviction and imprisonment of Captain Alfred Dreyfus on false espionage charges in late-19th century France, the initially small number of people who doubted the government and the press and worked for justice for Captain Dreyfus were known as "Dreyfusards." Doubt about the official version of the story of how President Bill Clinton's deputy White House Counsel Vincent W. Foster, Jr., died was also confined to a few individuals in the early days, at least among those who would speak up. By the terminology borrowed from France, David Martin was an original "Dreyfusard." In time, he was joined by people with a higher profile, but after Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's team rendered its long-delayed opinion that the original "suicide" judgment had been correct, most of them dropped by the wayside. Martin, who as a senior at Davidson College was secretary of the Young Democrats Club of which Foster was a member, persisted, following the case into the controversy surrounding candidate Donald Trump's expressed suspicions about Foster's death in the 2016 presidential campaign and beyond. In a certain sense, this book may be regarded as the memoir of a Washington, DC, "Dreyfusard" insider. Eventually, justice would prevail in the Dreyfus case. Demonstrating the same sort of incisive analysis that he showed in The Assassination of James Forrestal and The Martyrdom of Thomas Merton, written with Hugh Turley, Martin makes a persuasive case that justice is yet to be done in the case of Vince Foster's death. A major reason for the difference, Martin explains, is that the press and the ruling establishment of the United States have been much more monolithic on the side of injustice than were those institutions in France at the turn of the 20th century. This book is destined to be the definitive reference work for anyone interested in this high-level murder mystery, as Martin fashions it, while, at the same time, it reveals a great deal about the nature of the controlling power of the United States at the turn of the 21st century.

The second document, dated July 24, 1967, is a letter from the FBI’s Cartha DeLoach to the FBI’s Clyde Tolson. It reads, in part,
Pursuant to the Director’s instructions, I saw Justice Fortas at his home.... I told him we had received an allegation from a source of information reflecting participation in homosexual activities on his part. I stated that the Director wanted this matter discreetly and informally brought to his attention so that he would be aware of such an allegation. I mentioned that the FBI was taking no further action in connection with this matter and that the fact that the Director was making this available to him was strictly for his own personal protection and knowledge. Justice Fortas was handed the attached memorandum so that he could read it personally. After reading this memorandum, he told me that the charges were ridiculous and absolutely false. He stated he had never committed a homosexual act in his life and while he might be properly accused of normal sexual relations while a young man and during his married life, he most certainly had never committed homosexual acts at any time.... Justice Fortas expressed great appreciation for having been provided with the above facts. He asked that his thanks be extended to the Director for having handled the matter in this manner.
In 2003, Susan Braudy’s book Family Circle: The Boudins and the Aristocracy of the Left (Knopf) made a passing reference to the allegations about Fortas. According to Braudy (page 331), “In fact, Fortas resigned because of J. Edgar Hoover’s threat of blackmail: an FBI agent had visited Fortas in 1968 to inform him of Hoover’s ‘concern’ that Fortas had been seen at a homosexual bar. It was left to President Nixon to appoint Fortas’s successor as well as the chief justice. Thus did Hoover deliver a history-changing coup de grace to the liberal Supreme Court.”

Section 230, the legal backbone of the internet, is under attack again. This time, it is from a bipartisan pair of legislators who seem to fundamentally misunderstand how the law works and what the consequences of repealing it would be.
We’ve talked about plenty of attempts to reform Section 230, and why all of them would be problematic. But, now we have a bipartisan attempt to repeal it outright. Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Democrat Frank Pallone, who are the top Republican and Democrat on the House Energy & Commerce Committee, have announced a draft bill to “sunset” Section 230.
