-- Southwest Harbor has hired a former Machias police officer who was accused a decade ago of assaulting and groping women during arrests and who sued his former employer for wrongful termination.
Richard Strout is the newest police officer with the Southwest Harbor Police Department, the department said Tuesday on its Facebook page. The post said Strout left law enforcement 12 years ago but is returning to a “profession he loves.”

Capitol riot: FBI informant testifies for Proud Boys defense
prosecutors disclosed Wednesday, March 22, 2023, that a witness expected to testify for the defense at the seditious conspiracy trial of former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and four associates was secretly acting as a government informant for nearly two years after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, a defense lawyer said in a court filing. The New York Times Spreads Misinformation Again
And it's the same writer, over and over
ALEC KARAKATSANIS
JUN 26 2023
I’ve been taking a summer break from writing new posts because I’ve been asked to turn my newsletter posts into a book on Copaganda. As with my last book, my plan is to donate all royalties to a community-based organization that fights against police violence, and to have free copies available to all teachers and to all high school, college, and graduate students who want them. We will also have free copies available to all people who want one and who are confined in jails and prisons, and to folks organizing in their community against police violence.
But I needed to send a post today because, once again, the New York Times has allowed one of its most notorious pro-police writers to publish yet another irresponsible article emailed to millions of paid subscribers in the NYT’s flagship “The Morning” newsletter.
Protesting for Civil Rights Causes MURDER and the Only Solution Is More Cops
Today’s article is a smorgasboard of copaganda, but I want to focus on two recurring themes. First, the author yet again baselessly claims that the George Floyd protests for racial justice and civil rights caused more murders. Second, the author yet again baselessly claims that more cops reduces violence. Each of these outrageous claims are supported by vague, anonymous reference to “experts, ” who are, again, portrayed as operating with some kind of consensus.
If you haven’t read it yet, this would be a good time for you to read my prior essay that dissects much of this unethical misinformation by this same reporter over the last several years, as well as all of the tactics used in this article:

Day 3 from the CDC (Centers for Disinformation, Criminality and Prevarication)
When it was over I ran out and bought flowers, pizza and got a car wash--a ceremonial cleanse of the bad juju
MERYL NASS MD
JUN 24, 2023
I didn’t want to dive down into the CDC sewer for a second time today and recreate today’s ACIP meeting so I could write it up. But then I realized I really have to come to grips with the fact that our culture has spawned a bumper crop of Stepford wives/lemmings/robotic gibberish producers and we have to figure out how to bring them back to life or at least reprogram them so they are good for something. I hope to write more on that large topic later.
The mission of CDC and the ACIP members is to sign off on all possible vaccines as safe and effective, and to never turn over any stones that could reveal anything different. Then to roll all vaccines out to as broad a group of humans as humanly possible.
To that end, the ACIP members are presented with bits of partial information. They never ask for more. And everyone speaks in code, which is why I started watching the meetings, because they are hard for normal people to understand, and I felt they needed a translator.
Today’s meeting began with Monkeypox vaccines. There are two, because both were intended for smallpox. ACAM2000 was purchased starting 25 years ago and after the anthrax letters a dose was bought for every American—after the old smallpox vaccine that was stored frozen for decades was destroyed, allegedly to save money on electricity.
Let me remind you that monkeypox is essentially like shingles. CDC tried to make it seem serious with some gruesome photos today, then admitted they were of end-stage AIDS patients with monkeypox too. It is a mild disease and there is no need for a vaccine for 99.9% of people; and

Lawsuit over bombing of Flight 103 dismissed
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a libel lawsuit filed by a former FBI official who was alleged to have had advance knowledge of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Oliver "Buck" Revell, a retired FBI associate deputy director, complained that a book, "The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror," accused him of allowing the mass murder of the 259 people on board the flight and 11 more on the ground.
The book, by David M. Hoffman, said Revell had prior knowledge of the bombing and pulled his son and daughter-in-law off the plane in London.

FBI Agent Blasts Scottish Report Outlining Reasons Why “Lockerbie Bomber” Might be Innocent
Posted on March 19, 2012 by Mark Godsey | 2 Comments
I’ve blogged here and here about questions as to whether Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, known as “The Lockerbie Bomber,” might have been wrongfully convicted, as many believe.  An 800-page report by the Scottish CCRC the has identified 6 areas of concern in the case that point to innocence, including the fact that the FBI allegedly paid witnesses for their testimony.  But an FBI agent, Oliver “Buck” Revell, who was in charge of investigating the case has now come out firing, claiming that the FBI never paid witnesses, and that the report is not complete or credible because the FBI was never interviewed or consulted regarding the facts.  Details here.  More here.

Court Slams FBI For Saying It's Okay For The Federal Government To Lie To A Court
Legal Issues
from the who-watches-the-watchers? dept
Fri, May 6th 2011 12:12pm - Mike Masnick
A few months back, we pointed out how the EFF had discovered that the FBI was extremely arbitrary in how it redacted information on Freedom of Information Act requests. There are specific rules about what should be redacted and what should be allowed. However, the EFF received the same documents from separate requests, and found totally different sections redacted. Not only did this suggest how arbitrary the process was, it also allowed them to see some of what was redacted in the “other” document — and discover that it never should have been redacted.
Now, the EFF is pointing to a recent ruling that shows the FBI apparently feels it’s free to go much further than just arbitrary redacting. In a different case, a district court has slammed the FBI for both lying about what records it actually had in response to an FOIA request by pretending certain records did not exist (even though they did) and then redacting portions of the document, claiming that they were outside the scope of the request… when they were not. The court is clearly not pleased. It also did not buy the government’s silly claim that revealing that the FBI lied would be a threat to national security or that it’s fine for the federal government to simply lie to a court, in the name of “national security.”
After court ordered the FBI to submit full versions of the records in camera, along with a new declaration about the agency’s search, the FBI revealed for the first time that it had materially and fundamentally mislead the court in its earlier filings. The unaltered versions of the documents showed that the information the agency had withheld as outside the scope was actually well within the scope of the plaintiffs FOIA request. The government also admitted it had a large number of additional responsive documents that it hadn’t told the plaintiffs or the court about. Id. at 7-8.
If these revelations weren’t bad enough, the FBI also argued FOIA allows it to mislead the court where it believes revealing information would compromise national security.Id. at 9. The FBI also argued, that its initial representations to the Court were not technically false because although the information might have been factually responsive to the plaintiffs FOIA request, it was legally nonresponsive.Id. at 9, n. 4 (emphasis added).
The court noted, this argument is indefensible,id. at 9-10, and held, the FOIA does not permit the government to withhold responsive information from the court

DOJ Releases Report On Minneapolis PD, Says It’s No Surprise This Problematic Cop Shop Produced A Murderer
Failures
from the broken-on-every-conceivable-level dept
Fri, Jun 23rd 2023 07:39pm - Tim Cushing
Any investigative report of any police department in the United States composed by the DOJ’s Civil Rights division can be described as “scathing.” Bad cops doing bad things trigger these investigations, which invariably find evidence of biased policing, excessive force deployment, and a general disregard — if not actual disdain — for the people these departments are supposed to be serving.
This investigation of the Minneapolis PD was triggered by the rarest of occurrences: the murder conviction of Officer Derek Chauvin for spending nearly 10 minutes with his knee pressed to unarmed black man George Floyd’s neck — an act that would have been considered, at minimum, metaphorically reprehensible even if it hadn’t continued for three minutes after another officer informed Chauvin he could not detect a pulse.
Minneapolis burned, much like Los Angeles did thirty years ago following the brutal beating of a black man by white cops. Los Angeles is still overseen by terrible cops, showing it takes more than a few weeks of civil eruption to change the status quo. And, if history is any indication

A Warning to Journalists About Elite Academia
Two Harvard professors propose the greatest expansion of the police bureaucracy in Western history.
ALEC KARAKATSANIS
NOV 3, 2022
Two Harvard professors recently published an article called “The Injustice of Under-Policing in America” in the American Journal of Law and Equality. The Harvard professors call for 500,000 more armed cops, who will arrest 7.8 million more people per year.
In other words, these two professors are proposing the greatest expansion of militarized police and surveillance in modern Western history, and they call it “the only way” to live up to “progressive” and “egalitarian” commitments.
The article reveals systemic ethical and intellectual flaws in elite academia. A number of leading researchers, scholars, students, journalists, and organizers have asked me to critique the article because of my relatively safe position outside academia and the enormous stakes as the U.S. stands on the precipice of fascism. I think what follows is one of my most important posts, and I dedicate it to all of the students and junior faculty afraid to speak up about pervasive intellectual and moral flaws in what passes for elite education and scholarship.

This post by James Howard Kunstler was too good not to include
"calling D.C. a swamp is an insult to swamps"

Teachable Moment
“In the wake of the Hunter Biden sweetheart plea deal, calling D.C. a swamp is an insult to swamps and frankly to all wetlands in general. We need to redefine the Clean Water Act to include all Biden adjacent areas.” — Margot Cleveland, Lawyer and legal analyst

“I’m proud of my son” — Joe Biden
I hope you agree this has been an instructive week for our republic, sinking to the bottom as fast as the Titan submersible on its way to consort with its grandmama, the RMS Titanic. Here’s what I learned, for instance, from Special Counsel John Durham’s visit to the House Judiciary Committee: When asked why he did not seek grand jury testimony from the primary culprits in the Russia Collusion hoax — Comey, McCabe, and Strzok — he told the room it would have been “unproductive” because they habitually claimed to “not recall” anything when testifying in Congress.
That’s an interesting legal theory. If it is so, we must suppose that any witness in a criminal inquiry may decline testifying on the grounds of claiming a defective memory. I’m not a lawyer, of course, but is it not the case that witnesses can be prompted to recall events when presented with evidence? E.g., “…here is your smartphone text of July 29 saying, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll stop him [Trump].’ What means did you have in mind to accomplish that, Mr. Strzok?”
In the four-year lead-up to his personal appearance in the House, many of us were fooled into thinking Mr. Durham was a serious dude. (I sure was.) Turns out the ferocious facial hair masked a rather timorous persona. Mr. Durham apparently did not dare test the boundaries of the narrow lane laid out in the scoping directives set forth by then Attorney General Barr. Mr. D. did find a line of criminal conduct between Lawfare artist Michal Sussmann, the Fusion GPS disinfo company, the DC law firm Perkins Coie, and candidate Hillary MyTurn in the creation and marketing of the Steele Dossier — yet he never called Hillary to do any ‘splainin about it (or anything else she did in 2016). Weird, a little bit.
While his omissions and missteps were spotlighted by the Republican members, Mr. Durham was mugged, kicked to the curb, stomped, and peed-on by the committee Democrats, who still labor to prop-up the dead-letter Russia Collusion fraud against all evidence and reason. As usual, the lead attack dog on that was Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). He was rewarded the next day with a censure vote for seven years of shameless lying about said fraud, and stripped of his seat on the House Intel Committee, which he used, as then-chairman, to launch Trump Impeachment #1 in 2019 with fake “whistleblower” (and CIA goblin) Eric Ciaramella, whom Mr. Schiff naturally lied about never meeting prior to the proceeding.
We are treated in these twilight months of the “Joe Biden” regime to a cavalcade of revelations laying out the degeneracy of a federal justice system at war with the American people and its shady machinations in service to the Biden family global bribery operation. Late Thursday, the House Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), released the affidavit of IRS supervisory special agent Gary Shapley from testimony given in closed session May 26. It disclosed a concerted program by the DOJ to impede, obstruct, delay, divert, and bury a massive tax evasion and fraud case against Hunter Biden, involving millions of dollars garnered from foreign persons and entities for no discernible services performed in return.
I am alleging, with evidence…” Mr. Shapley testified under oath, “…whatever the motivations, at every stage decisions were made that had the effect of benefiting the subject of the investigation. These decisions included slow-walking investigative steps, not allowing enforcement actions to be executed, limiting investigators’ line of questioning for witnesses, misleading investigators on charging authority, delaying any and all actions months before [the 2020] elections to ensure the investigation did not go overt well before policy memorandum mandated the pause.”
Hunter Biden was code-named “Sportsman” as the case opened in 2018. Red flags in bank transfer records of Hunter B and associates involving millions of dollars triggered the IRS inquiry. It wasn’t until a year later that Hunter’s laptop turned up, crammed with deal memos of bribes paid along with vivid documentary evidence of sex and drug crimes. The FBI verified its authenticity in November of 2019 by matching the device number against Hunter Biden’s Apple iCloud ID.
By the way, note that this was the exact same time that the House Intel Committee under chairman Adam Schiff commenced its impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. AG William Barr and FBI Director Chris Wray therefore knew then that Hunter’s laptop existed and that it contained evidence of suspicious money transactions with Russia, China, and most particularly Ukraine — since Mr. Trump’s impeachment case was based on a telephone query he made to Ukrainian President, Zelensky, regarding the Biden family’s operations there. Neither Mr. Barr nor Mr. Wray alerted Mr. Trump’s lawyers about the evidence contained in the laptop — which would have provided exculpatory proof of a reasonable motive for Mr. Trump’s phone call. How was that not an obstruction of justice?
Mr. Shapley’s testimony is just one thread in the much larger tapestry of Biden family corruption now achieving clarity. Rep. James Comer’s Oversight Committee continues on its deep dive into the Biden family bank transfer records — with its evidence of money laundering through Biden shell company cut-outs — and the direct voice recording evidence of  “Joe Biden” discussing his family’s financial arrangements with Petro Poroshenko, then-president of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019, plus other damning evidence connected to a “trusted” (and well-paid) FBI human confidential source in the much fought over FD-1023 document recently surrended to the Oversight Committee.
In short, the tide is going out even as the sun sets on “Joe Biden” as President. He and his handlers may believe they enjoy the protection of a compliant news media, but even that has its limits. Impeachment is coming, even if not as fast as Rep. Lauren Boebert wants it to, and if and when it does, there will be no ignoring the stark presentation of hard evidence — no matter how much MSNBC’s Joy-Ann Reid snorts and cackles.
Meanwhile, please understand that “Joe Biden” is only pretending to run for reelection and his party is pretending along with him just for the present desperate moment. Before long, their whole reeking, creaking edifice of lies and bad faith will come crashing down. Joe Biden will have to resign or the nation will be treated to the spectacle, this time, of a trial in the senate for real cause, bribery and treason, not just fake animus. And then, not even Gavin Newsom will be able to save the Democratic Party in its present alignment and foul habits. If it survives at all, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr

Jeffrey Epstein was blackmailing politicians for Israel's Mossad, new book claims

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... spies.html
Jeffrey Epstein book claims he and Ghislaine Maxwell were 'Mossad spies' who 'filmed US politicians and power players having sex with underage girls to blackmail them'
* Dylan Howard's book Epstein: Dead Men Tell No Tales proposes the theory that Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein were Israeli spies
* It says Ghislaine's late father Robert introduced Jeffrey to Mossad handlers before he died in 1991
* Robert - who was also a Mossad spy, according to the book's sources - told them to 'accept' Jeffrey
* They believe he and Ghislaine then lured prominent politicians and celebrities into sleeping with underage girls they provided, filmed it and blackmailed them
* There is no proof that Epstein has tapes of anyone sleeping with underage girls
* However several of his victims say his homes were wired with cameras and that he kept the footage in a safe
* Both the FBI and New York authorities which raided his home are refusing to confirm whether or not such tapes exist

Jeffrey Epstein was a financial wizard who also served as an agent for other wealthy patrons.
With his partner Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of the UK media mogul and Mossad agent Robert Maxwell, Epstein followed in the footsteps of previous organizers of extensive blackmail operations such as Roy Cohn, lawyer for communist-hunting US Senator Joe McCarthy and eventually, political mentor of Donald Trump.
This book provides a comprehensive, well-documented Who's Who of all others involved in the grey zone between great wealth, crime, and intelligence.

EPSTEIN: Devil in the Darkness
13 Episodes
Chapter Three: Little Black Book - Politicians, Power & Privilege
Explore the extraordinary circle of influential men that Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell called friends and colleagues, thanks to Epstein’s little black book. From British Prime Minister Tony Blair, to Hollywood A-Listers such as Kevin Spacey, the book is a who’s who of the international elite. Also included are President Bill Clinton – who flew on Epstein’s “Lolita Express” private jet no fewer than 26 times – and President Donald Trump, who said of Epstein: “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.” How well did these men know Epstein? And how much did they know about his dark side? Do they have dark secrets of their own? In a world-exclusive interview, we talk to a former Palm Beach County Sheriff who claims he has blackmail materials compiled by Epstein.

One thing we all should have learned from the COVID experience is that not all is well in the land of mass vaccination and we need to rethink our approach to regulatory oversight. Instead of taking a pause, the FDA and CDC are about to blitz us with new approvals based on bad data. We’re joined today by Dr. Meryl Nass, a 42-year internist who is well-studied on all things vaccines. She watched all three days of the CDC’s advisory panel on vaccines recommend approval for so many new vaccines. She explains how the regulatory process works and why it’s corrupt from head to toe. Officials replace real data with fake modeling while ignoring glaring and blaring signals about safety and negative efficacy. COVID was just the tip of the iceberg.

The inside story of how the FBI’s top brass intervened to protect top Democrats
By Thomas Lifson
Jerry Dunleavy, an excellent political reporter at the Washington Examiner, has used Twitter to publish what he correctly labels a “scoop,” and he has crafted a must-read. Using my words, not his, he found a source, “a former FBI official from the counterintelligence world,” who explained how a notable coverup worked.  He eschews such conclusory language and wisely sticks to a straightforward facts-first reporting style.
FBI agents started investigating potential Chinese spies Russel Lowe and Fang Fang, who had gotten very close to Dianne Feinstein and Eric Swalwell, respectively.
According to the former FBI official from the counterintelligence world, the FBI had FISA surveillance up & running on Fang (who was targeting numerous politicians in Calif

Decoding 702: What is Section 702?
Why can the U.S. government collect my emails?
Under authority ostensibly granted by something called Section 702, the U.S. government routinely collects and searches the online communications of innocent Americans without a warrant through what are commonly called “upstream” and “PRISM”  (now called “downstream”) surveillance.
Section 702 is a surveillance authority passed as part of the FISA Amendments Act in 2008. That law amended the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978.
Section 702 is supposed to do exactly what its name promises: collection of foreign intelligence from non-Americans located outside the United States. As the law is written, the intelligence community cannot use Section 702 programs to target Americans, who are protected by the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures. But the law gives the intelligence community space to target foreign intelligence in ways that inherently and intentionally sweep in Americans’ communications.
Currently, Congress has to renew Section 702 every few years. It was last renewed in 2018 and is set to expire at the end of 2023.
The bill that was most recently passed, S. 139, endorses nearly all warrantless searches of databases containing Americans’ communications collected under Section 702. It allows for the restarting of “about” collection, an invasive type of surveillance that the NSA ended in 2017 after being criticized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for privacy violations. And it includes a six-year sunset, delaying Congress’ best opportunity to debate the limits NSA surveillance.

The FBI is in hot water for misusing a powerful surveillance tool nearly 300,000 times in 2020 and early 2021, including to search for information about Americans linked to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol or arrested during Black Lives Matter protests.

WARRANTLESS SURVEILLANCE UNDER SECTION 702 OF FISA
Under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the U.S. government engages in mass, warrantless surveillance of Americans’ and foreigners’ phone calls, text messages, emails, and other electronic communications. Information collected under the law without a warrant can be used to prosecute and imprison people, even for crimes that have nothing to do with national security. Given our nation’s history of abusing its surveillance authorities, and the secrecy surrounding the program, we should be concerned that Section 702 is and will be used to disproportionately target disfavored groups, whether minority communities, political activists, or even journalists.
Section 702 is set to expire at the end of 2023. We call on Congress to significantly reform the law, or allow it to sunset.

Section 702 of FISA: A “Foreign Intelligence” Law Turned Domestic Spying Tool
Overview
In 2008, Congress passed Section 702 of FISA to give the government greater powers to conduct warrantless surveillance of suspected foreign terrorists. The law allows the National Security Agency (NSA), when collecting information inside the United States or from U.S. companies, to target almost any foreigner abroad and acquire all their communications without an individualized court order. Congress explicitly prohibited the targeting of Americans, and it charged the FISA Court with approving the program and its procedures once a year.
Although purportedly targeted at foreigners, Section 702 has become a rich source of warrantless government access to Americans’ phone calls, texts, and emails. Since Section 702 was last reauthorized, a series of disclosures has revealed the extent of this problem. In 2021 alone, the FBI conducted up to 3.4 million warrantless searches of Section 702 communications to find Americans’ information. This has turned Section 702 into something Congress never intended: a domestic spying tool.
Other equally serious problems have emerged. The secret and one-sided nature of FISA Court proceedings has undermined the court’s ability to conduct

I Spy with My Little FBI… Massive FISA Violations

KAI KNORR 05/25/23

The FBI has pulled off the impressive feat of getting both parties to agree on something. Republicans and Democrats alike expressed outrage at the Bureau after recent revelations of illegal spying on Americans, including Black Lives Matter protesters and people involved in the January 6th insurrection.
This scandal comes soon after the FBI vowed to stop abusing its powers under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The Bureau has unveiled a new set of rules for its agents aimed at curbing wrongful surveillance of US citizens, but privacy advocates and a Democratic lawmaker say the new policies won’t put an end to these sorts of abuses.
This unconstitutional surveillance stems from Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which gives the FBI a broad mandate to spy on foreign targets without a warrant. The Bureau uses this “critical national security tool” to root out terrorist plots and espionage against the US.
When the Bureau intercepts the phone calls, texts, and emails of foreigners outside the United States, it also collects the data of the Americans whom these foreign targets contact. This can help the FBI uncover the American contacts of shady actors overseas.
However, it also gives the FBI the power to warrantlessly spy on US citizens who happen to contact foreign targets — whether they are involved in criminal activity or not.
“The trouble for civil liberties of Americans happens when people overseas call someone in the United States,” said Matthew Guariglia, senior policy analyst at

FBI SNITCH SENTENCED TO LIFE
In the series of trials which followed the capture of the Ohio 7, the government relied heavily upon the testimony of an informant named Joseph Aceto (aka: Joseph Balino), a former member of Statewide Correctional Alliance for Reform (SCAR), a prisoners-rights organization founded in Portland, Maine during the early 1970s by Tom Manning and Ray Luc Levasseur.  Aceto offered considerable "evidence" concerning the original formation of the SMJJ, its evolution into UFF, and supposedly first-hand recollections of the defendants' having described their bombing and bank-robbing exploits to him. Only later did it emerge conclusively that the government's star witness had consistently lied under oath, passing off third-hand gossip and utter fabrications as conversations in which he himself had participated.   It also came out that Aceto had been diagnosed as psychotic and administered heavy doses of the tranquilizer Mellaril - to "increase his veracity" - prior to testimony.   To top things off, it was revealed that, in exchange for such testimony, the FBI had arranged for him to be released from prison where he was serving a life sentence for a brutal stabbing murder and placed on the federal witness protection program (a package with an $800 per month stipend).   All this information had been withheld from the defense - and consequently from the jury - at trial.

Ending Fusion Center Abuses
The federal government provides state and local intelligence hubs with funding, personnel, and database access — all without adequate oversight.
For almost two decades, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has supported the development of a national network of 80 fusion centers. Operated by states and localities, fusion centers incorporate federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel, first responders, and select private-sector representatives to collect, analyze, and distribute intelligence. While the federal government initially promoted them as hubs for sharing counterterrorism information, fusion centers quickly expanded their missions to include any crimes or hazards.
DHS provides these centers with funding, personnel, and access to federal intelligence, but it has failed to ensure that they have used these resources appropriately. As a result, fusion centers have long produced flawed analysis, abused their authorities to monitor people engaged in First Amendment–protected activities, and leaked sensitive law enforcement information. This domestic intelligence model has undermined Americans’ privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties.
Fusion centers have repeatedly targeted minority communities and protest movements under the guise of counterterrorism or public safety. In their early years, they often singled out American Muslims for unwarranted scrutiny. Their bulletins have regularly painted racial and environmental justice activists as menacing threats. Fusion center reports are widely disseminated to local police and federal law enforcement, likely contributing to their heavy-handed responses to these protests in recent years. The participation of private companies, including some that have been the subjects of protests, in fusion centers raises the possibility that these operations sometimes serve private interests rather than public safety.
Fusion centers continue to be susceptible to abuse as protest movements react to events, creating new targets for unwarranted scrutiny. For example, fusion centers have amplified FBI and DHS threat warnings that falsely lump pro-choice activists together with abortion foes as potential “abortion-related violent extremists,” even though only anti-abortion militants have a history of engaging in deadly violence.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (hereinafter FBI) and Department of Homeland Security (hereinafter DHS), Strategic Intelligence Assessment and Data on Domestic Terrorism, May 2021, 7, https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/fbi ... .pdf/view; and Jana Winter, “Law Enforcement Prepares for Potential Violence, Unrest Surrounding Roe Decision,” Yahoo News, May 4, 2022, https://news.yahoo.com/exclusive-law-en ... 37717.html.
As states criminalize abortion, investigations of those seeking, providing, or even just supporting access to reproductive services will fit within fusion centers’ “all crimes” remit,
Permanent Subcomm. on Investigations, S. Comm. on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Federal Support for and Involvement in State and Local Fusion Centers (hereinafter Federal Support for Fusion Centers), October 3, 2012, 94–96, https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/10–3–2012%20PSI%20STAFF%20REPORT%20re%20FUSION%20CENTERS.2.pdf.
making it likely that fusion centers will heed law enforcement requests for assistance.
At the same time, there is little to suggest that fusion centers have provided meaningful assistance to federal counterterrorism efforts. And even as they have broadened their missions beyond counterterrorism, there is no evidence that they have contributed substantially to reducing or solving serious crime. They do, however, facilitate broad, unregulated information sharing among a variety of public and private entities with little oversight or public accountability, which poses a serious security liability that was realized when hackers breached a fusion center contractor in 2020, exposing hundreds of thousands of sensitive records from the FBI, DHS, and other law enforcement agencies.
As the 20th anniversary of the creation of DHS approaches, the Brennan Center has undertaken a comprehensive review of the department’s efforts to carry out its primary mission of keeping the country safe from terrorism. Our April 2022 report, A Course Correction for Homeland Security: Curbing Counterterrorism Abuses, identified structural and operational problems endemic to DHS-sponsored fusion centers.
Faiza Patel, Rachel Levinson-Waldman, and Harsha Panduranga, A Course Correction for Homeland Security: Curbing Counterterrorism Abuses, Brennan Center for Justice, April 20, 2022, https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/ ... d-security.
This report expands on these critiques and proposes solutions through the lens of federal funding, support, and oversight. While fusion centers are run by state or local agencies, they continue to receive significant federal investments. The federal government has an obligation to guard against the misuse of the resources, systems, and personnel it provides, and to ensure that Americans’ constitutional rights are not infringed upon by the improper collection, retention, and dissemination of personally identifiable information of persons not reasonably suspected of criminal activity.

Fusion Center Locations and Contact Information
State and major urban area fusion centers (fusion centers) are owned and operated by state and local entities, and are designated by the governor of their state.
In accordance with the Federal Resource Allocation Criteria (RAC) policy (PDF, 144 KB, 4 pages), which defines objective criteria and a coordinated approach for prioritizing federal resource allocation to fusion centers, the federal government recognizes these designations and has a shared responsibility with state and local governments to support the national network of fusion centers.
There are two types of fusion centers:
* Primary Fusion Centers: A primary fusion center typically provides information sharing and analysis for an entire state. These centers are the highest priority for the allocation of available federal resources, including the deployment of personnel and connectivity with federal data systems.
* Recognized Fusion Centers: A recognized fusion center typically provides information sharing and analysis for a major urban area. As the Federal Government respects the authority of state governments to designate fusion centers, any designated fusion center not designated as a primary fusion center is referred to as a recognized fusion center.

Charley Tennenbaum, a Stop Cop City activist, was charged with felony intimidation for flyering about the officers who shot an organizer 57 times. After months in prison, Tennenbaum spoke to Jacobin about Georgia’s crackdown on civil liberties.
INTERVIEW BY
TADHG LARABEE
On January 18, Georgia State Patrol troopers murdered Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, a nonbinary Afro-Venezuelan activist who went by the name “Tortuguita.” An independent autopsy concluded that Tortuguita had been shot more than a dozen times while they were sitting cross-legged with their hands up and their palms facing their body. Months later, the state’s autopsy established the precise number of shots, fifty-seven, and confirmed another key finding from the independent autopsy: Tortuguita had not fired a gun, as officers claimed. Their death was ruled a homicide.

Stonewall was a riot — but in some cities, Pride officials have banned “political” groups and welcomed cops. Now activists are organizing radical Pride marches to show that Pride is a protest, not just a party.

The FBI massively erred about civilians stopping active shooters
By Andrea Widburg
I’m one of those who believes that what stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Sometimes, that good guy is a police officer, and sometimes, the good guy is a civilian. Leftists claim that the good guys’ contribution is so inconsequential that it doesn’t justify honoring citizens’ Second Amendment to keep and bear arms. New Mexico governor Michelle Grisham certainly agrees with that viewpoint. Leftists look to FBI statistics to support their arguments—so will you be surprised to learn that the FBI’s statistics are wrong? And, as always, that the error works to support leftist ideology and political positions?
The Crime Prevention Research Center (“CPRC”) has done a deep dive into the FBI’s Active Shooting Reports from 2014-2022 and discovered that the reports grossly underestimate the number of times armed civilians have stopped active shootings. The FBI says that civilians stop fewer than 5% of active shooters, while the actual data say that civilians, on average, stopped over 35% of active shooters, with the number going up to 63.5% if you include defensive use of guns outside of “gun-free guns” (which I call “shooting fish in a barrel” zones

U.S. Refutes Oklahoma Juror’s Allegations : Bombing: Prosecutors deny federal panelist’s contention that the government failed to follow up on key leads in the blast case.

The FBI and Justice Department also received concerned letters from Florida, Michigan, and elsewhere. Eventually, six FBI field offices got involved, with agents interviewing record executives and the song's composer, Richard Berry — but not singer Jack Ely, according to "The Mind of the Censor and the Eye of the Beholder: The First Amendment and the Censor's Dilemma." The FBI scientists slowed the recording down and sped it up, "but it was indecipherable at any speed," Predoehl told NPR.

Why 2% Is the Most Dangerous Number No One Is Talking About
The sheer quantity of chemicals being dumped into the environment is quickly growing—and we only be seeing the beginning of the harm they are doing to us.
RICHARD HEINBERG

Common Dreams
We’ve had a summer from hell, with July 2023 temporarily claiming the title of hottest month on record. But while the klaxons of Earth’s climate system have riveted nearly everyone’s attention, something else is silently happening to us and other species that could turn out to be just as big a disaster.
Nature is increasingly stewing in air- and water-borne toxins originating in industrial processes. Tens of thousands of chemicals, only a tiny proportion of which have been tested for safety, are making their way into the environment—from pharmaceuticals that have passed through human bodies, to plastics, pesticides, solvents, fire-retardants, and chemicals used in making cookware coatings.
Recent research shows that whole classes of these chemicals are affecting sexuality and disrupting reproduction—not just in humans, but in a host of other animal species as well. But the whole

DHS/ALL/PIA-027 Watchlist Service
DHS receives a copy of the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB), the U.S. Government’s consolidated database maintained by the Department of Justice (DOJ) Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Terrorist Screening Center (TSC), to facilitate DHS mission-related functions, such as counterterrorism, law enforcement, border security, and inspection activities. In July 2010, DHS launched an improved method of transmitting TSDB data from TSC to DHS through a service called the DHS Watchlist Service (WLS). WLS maintains a synchronized copy of the TSDB, which contains personally identifiable information (PII) and disseminates TSDB records it receives to authorized DHS Components. DHS is updating this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to add the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Fraud Detection and National Security-Data System (FDNS-DS) as an authorized recipient of TSDB data via the WLS.

The consequences of being placed on a government watchlist can be far-reaching. They can include questioning, harassment, or detention by authorities, or even an indefinite ban on air travel. And while the government keeps the evidence it uses to blacklist people in this manner secret, government watchdogs have found that as many as 35 percent of the nominations to the network of watchlists are outdated and tens of thousands of names were placed on lists without an adequate factual basis. To make matters worse, the government denies watchlisted individuals any meaningful way to correct errors and clear their names.

Wall Street, the Supermob, and the CIA
Jonathan Marshall
2022, Lobster magazine
This article probes hitherto overlooked evidence of CIA connections to underworld-linked private foundations used by the Agency to launder funds to seemingly independent student, labor, religious, publishing, and other organizations involved in international operations. It demonstrates how CIA-protected foundations helped seemingly upstanding business leaders and Wall Street institutions collaborate with shady operators and outright criminals in pursuit of profit and political advantage. Their deals helped drive the wild bull market of the 1960s and produced the largest wave of corporate mergers since the beginning of the 20th century. Although the 1960s merger wave has been the subject of many academic studies, none has identified the role of criminal money in fueling its progress. The stories that follow illustrate that organized crime was an important force in 20th century U.S. business history.

The Big Deception
Maybe the most important form of copaganda
I write today about The Big Deception. That’s my cute term for how the news misleads people about the processes by which public safety policies come to be.  I’ve gestured at the concept in some of my writing, but I haven’t yet been explicit about it because I’ve been struggling to figure out how to write about it.
But recently, I had an interaction with the New York Times in which the paper agreed with my criticism and corrected an article after I pointed out on Twitter that the article’s description of the motivations of the NYC Mayor and NY Governor was deceptive (more on this incident later).  This interaction made me think it was time to try to write more fully about how news reporting about why politicians do things contributes to mass delusion.
When I say “mass delusion,” I do not mean anything necessarily nefarious or conspiratorial. I’m not complaining about the use of bad crime statistics or quoting biased sources.  Instead, I’m making the following observation: the level at which the news typically discusses the reasons that important public safety policies exist is superficial, simplistic, and wrong in ways that have discernible patterns and observable consequences in how well-meaning people approach trying to improve our society.  If our theory about why things are happening is silly, then we won’t be able to do much about the things we don’t like.
This series will have three parts.  In Part 1 this week, I’ll describe the basic concept, explain why it matters for how we think and what we do, and give an example about how the news can make us ignorant about why powerful institutions do the things that they do in the name of public safety.  In Part 2 next week, I’ll describe the most obvious level at which The Big Deception operates: reporting on why politicians say they do things versus why they actually do things.  I’ll give some revealing examples from news stories and probably say mean things about Eric Adams.  In Part 3 the following week, I’ll explain a deeper level of deception always below the surface in public safety reporting: a focus on individual decisions of powerful people and not on the structures that determine the conditions in which those decisions are made. I’ll conclude with some advice to journalists and news consumers about how to mitigate The Big Deception.
Part I: Understanding The Big Deception
1)    Introduction: What is “The Big Deception”?
The crux of the Big Deception is this: the collective

New Zealand Petition to Ban mRNA Agents will the country make history again?
In the early days of the covid propaganda onslaught, I thought often — in fact, I yearned — for the possibility that the New Zealand government would once again establish its bona fides on the world stage by taking a sensible position. I imagined our then-Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addressing the nation with ardent resolve not to succumb to a campaign of fear and impulse but to protect the citizenry of this small two-island country at the ends of the earth by zealously guarding our unalienable rights. I spun speeches in my own mind that would seek to calm anxieties about an invisible pathogen, rely on the strength and courage of people to follow established medical principles, acknowledge the critical role of natural immunity if and when illness made inroads, and vigorously pursue early treatment so as to avoid the lurid death scenarios depicted abroad, replete as they were with images of ventilators and overcrowded Intensive Care Units.
That, of course, was not to be.
The government instead assured us that they were the only font of covid truth and that the only way out of the pandemic to end all pandemics was via lockdowns, masks, mandates and universal inoculation with a novel biological agents never adequately tested masquerading as a vaccine. These agents, relying upon the mRNA platform, continue to be used only under provisional consent.
In a recent publication by Acevedo-Whitehouse and Bruno, concerns are raised about the risks of mRNA-based therapies. To quote from

On May 27, 2022, the 194 unelected, unaccountable and largely unknown delegates to the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) accelerated the UN/WHO process to transform international law to effectuate supranational centralized authoritarian control of global health. The WHO "One Health is an integrated, unifying approach to balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystem. [It includes] One Health Surveillance System ... that monitors risks and helps identify patterns across these many areas."
To this day almost no one in the U.S. government has discussed this publicly, and it has not been reported in the media except for a few publications in the "alternative media"
On January 18, 2022 the United States submitted to WHO 13 extensive proposed Amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005)?. Forty other member states submitted additional proposed Amendments, for a total of 3073. Selected examples are included in the Appendix to this document.
On May 27, 2022, the WHA made a Decision* entitled "Strengthening WHO preparedness for and response to health emergencies" to implement Amendments to IHR (2005). On May 28, 2022, Mara M
Burr (Burr@hhs.gov), the U.S. Director of Multilateral Relations in the Office of Global Relations, initiated the silent procedure in the WHA. The WHA adopted (by consensus alone) only a process Amendment to Article 59 (Entry into force; period for rejection or reservations) with consequent updates to Articles 55 (Amendments), 61 (Rejection), 62 (Reservations) and 63 (Withdrawal of rejection or reservations). The adopted process Amendments:
1. Significantly reduce the time period for a member state to invoke Article 61 or 62 for an Amendment (but not for a Regulation) from 18 to 10 months, and
2. Specify a time period of 12 months for entry of an Amendment into force of international law. This is half of the time period that the WHO Constitution specifies for a Regulation's entry into force of international law (24 months); it is silent about a time period for Amendments.

HOPKINTON — An independent investigator retained by the town has found that a police sergeant had knowledge of his former colleague's alleged sexual misconduct but failed to report it for several years.
The sergeant, Timothy Brennan, has been on paid administrative leave since May.
That same month, former Deputy Police Chief John "Jay" Porter pleaded not guilty to three counts of child rape after being accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2004 and 2005 when

Tim Wu Asks Why Congress Keeps Failing To Protect Kids Online. The Answer Is That He’s Asking The Wrong Question
Overhype

Tue, Nov 7th 2023 09:26am - Mike Masnick
While I often disagree with Tim Wu, I like and respect him, and always find it interesting to know what he has to say. Wu was also one of the earliest folks to give me feedback on my Protocols not Platforms paper, when he attended a roundtable at Columbia University discussing early drafts of the papers in that series.
Yet, quite frequently, he perplexes me. The latest is that he’s written up a piece for The Atlantic wondering “Why Congress Keeps Failing to Protect Kids Online.”
The case for legislative action is overwhelming. It is insanity to imagine that platforms, which see children and teenagers as target markets, will fix these problems themselves. Teenagers often act self-assured, but their still-developing

Inside the FBI's decades-long effort to court allies in the media
– THE WILSON QUARTERLY
J. Edgar Hoover's hidden wordsmiths
As the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, J. Edgar Hoover faced a public-relations problem. Amid the centralization of government under FDR’s New Deal, some Americans worried that a federal law enforcement agency would develop into a secret police force. To head off such fears, the FBI under Hoover began what became a decades-long effort to court allies in the press. One of the more unusual aspects of this campaign was the creation of a five-agent ghostwriting division that cultivated journalists with ostensibly personal letters from Hoover. The correspondence unit, housed in the FBI’s crime records division, churned out thousands of these missives during Hoover’s 48-year tenure at the helm of the FBI and its predecessor, the Bureau of Investigation, writes Matthew Cecil, a journalism and communications scholar at South Dakota State University.

‘Under the rug:' Sexual misconduct shakes FBI’s senior ranks
BY JIM MUSTIAN
December 10, 2020
— An assistant FBI director retired after he was accused of drunkenly groping a female subordinate in a stairwell. Another senior FBI official left after he was found to have sexually harassed eight employees. Yet another high-ranking FBI agent retired after he was accused of blackmailing a young employee into sexual encounters.
An Associated Press investigation has identified at least six sexual misconduct allegations involving senior FBI officials over the past five years, including two new claims brought this week by women who say they were sexually assaulted by ranking agents.
Each of the accused FBI officials appears to have avoided discipline, the AP found, and several were quietly transferred or retired, keeping their full pensions and benefits even when probes substantiated the sexual misconduct claims against them.
