Based on previously classified documents and on interviews with former secret police officers and ordinary citizens, The Firm is the first comprehensive history of East Germany's secret police, the Stasi, at the grassroots level.

Focusing on Gransee and Perleberg, two East German districts located north of Berlin, Gary Bruce reveals how the Stasi monitored small-town East Germany. He paints an eminently human portrait of those involved with this repressive arm of the government, featuring interviews with former officers that uncover a wide array of personalities, from devoted ideologues to reluctant opportunists, most of whom talked frankly about East Germany's obsession with surveillance. Their paths after the collapse of Communism are gripping stories of resurrection and despair, of renewal and demise, of remorse and continued adherence t

Approximately 6 months ago, CBP Commissioner Gil R. Kerlikowske officially announced the hiring (appointment) of Mark Morgan, one of the Obama Administration’s top risers within the FBI. Morgan is the same FBI Agent that a number of congressional offices believe “scrubbed” FBI training manuals of information that would have been damning to the agency and the Administration. Chief Morgan is a disgrace to the Border Patrol.

Chinese Access To AT&T/Verizon Wiretap System Shows Why We Cannot Backdoor Encryption
(Mis)Uses of Technology
from the backdoors-can-be-opened-by-spies-too dept
Tue, Oct 8th 2024 12:14pm - Mike Masnick
Creating surveillance backdoors for law enforcement is just asking for trouble. They inevitably become targets for hackers and foreign adversaries. Case in point: the US just discovered its wiretapping system has been compromised for who knows how long. This should end the encryption backdoor debate once and for all.
The law enforcement world has been pushing for backdoors to encryption for quite some time now, using their preferred term for it: “lawful access.” Whenever experts point out that backdooring encryption breaks the encryption entirely and makes everyone

Court Reminds Cops That Smelling Decriminalized Weed Ain’t The Probable Cause It Used To Be

If there’s anything that’s going to severely reduce the number of pretextual stopsperformed by cops, it probably won’t be the handful of traffic stop reform efforts being made by legislators. It’s going to be the continued legalization (or decriminalization) of marijuana possession.
One of law enforcement’s favorite tricks is to pull over a car for bullshit reasons, pretend officers smelled marijuana, and engage in

The FBI Has Apparently Spent A Year Trying To Crack NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ Personal Phone
(Mis)Uses of Technology
from the MAYOR-BEATS-FEDS dept
Thu, Oct 10th 2024 10:54am - Tim Cushing
The spectacular collapse of the Mayor Adams’ administration is still in progress. Pretty much everyone with ties to the ex-cop, current mayor has either been informed of an ongoing investigation or managed to infer that following multiple raids by the FBI.
The mayor’s handpicked police commissioner, Edward Caban, resigned shortly after these raids occurred, most likely because he was on the receiving end of one of these raids. So were First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, Phil Banks’ brother, David Banks, who is the schools chancellor, and Timothy Pearson, the mayor’s adviser.
Edward Caban issued a “get out of accountability free” missive to the NYPD as he left the building. He was replaced by former FBI Special Agent Michael Donlon… whose own house was also raided by the FBI.
In the middle of all this raiding and resigning, the Mayor’s PR people
