.

I'm guessing the Baptist is the Dionysian in that pairing. (All of the pairings are relative, obviously, which is why love might appear as the Dionysus to the the Apollonian beauty, but be the Apollo to the Dionysian ecstasy.) Though Dionysus is one of the resurrecting precursors to Jesus.

Okay, I'm stumped.

In the course of the major observational programme of asteroids by the Institute of Planetary Exploration of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) [1] in Berlin, two of the staff astronomers, Stefano Mottola and Gerhard Hahn , have discovered a small satellite (moon) orbiting the asteroid (3671) Dionysus.

Asteroid Dionysus [3] was put on the observing list because it belongs to a special class of asteroids, the members of which occasionally come very close to the Earth and have a small, but non-negligible chance of colliding with our planet. Most of these objects move in highly elliptical orbits that lie partly inside, partly outside that of the Earth. They are accordingly referred to as `Earth-crossing asteroids' or Apollo-type asteroids , after the proto-type of this group, (1862) Apollo, that was discovered in 1932 by Karl Reinmuth in Heidelberg [4].

Dionysus the Apollo-class asteroid. Does this mean both of these gods may have it in for us?

Wait. They're supposed to be examples of things that are coherently and intellectually supportable as Apollonian or Dionysian?

Are you kidding? It's always going a) to be what you like, and b) if they're supposed to be coherently & intellectually supportable, then I don't think anyone's been doing it more right than you. I spent an hour yesterday all excited and admiring your choice of two perfect Central Park examples. No kidding.

Yeah, the Jesus/John one is a bit ambiguous, but that's probably why I like it so much. I sort of see the Baptist as a way of reincorporating some of the Dionysian wildness back into the Christ myth (not that I can really back that up with any special literary scholarship). I think I was going for an "opposites that enhance or complete one another" kind of thing. Glad that I was able to stir up a little discussion though.

Hmmm.... Since I'm here, I feel like I should find another pair to add...

I'm not sure this coupling fits the scheme,
