It's not your fault. At least, I hope it's not, and I presume it's not. If you're aware of it, and it bothers you, then you're not really an idiot (and definitely not failing as much as you must feel you are).
Saying that, I wouldn't necessarily take my word for it - for I, too, am an idiot, and have no clue.
