web hosting?

Postby Nordic » Fri Apr 29, 2011 5:23 pm

Hey, hope this isn't too off topic, but hey it's the lounge, right?

I'm gonna need to put together a bit of a website in a bit, and I have absolutely no idea how to go about it.

I mean, I can figure it out, but I need a hosting service.

All the people I know seem to use Godaddy.com, which I refuse to use, because, well, even I have standards when it comes to sexism. :)

So. Any expertise in this area with anyone here? Recommendations?

I need something cheap but super-reliable where I can just post a few photos, a resume, and a downloadable video or two.

just signup for a tumblr account (free)
upload your videos to vimeo or youtube (free)
and embed them in the tumblr (free)

very cheap and easy to try it and see if it'll work for you.

yeah i thought about that, and checked it out, but the main problem i'm finding is that the video has to be downloadable, and neither youtube or vimeo seems to provide that. the portfolio site i already use is free, and works great for stills, but it converts videos into flash files. i need to be able to show the video and let people download it as a .mov file or mpeg4 or whatever, definitely not flash. plus it would behoove me to have my own domain name.

thus the op. any help appreciated!

Hi Nordic,
There's another thread around here that covers the same issues.

This is a major part of my web business, making portfolio sites for artists and small businesses. I've got a really good system (CMS software) that I work with now that you can run yourself on your own domain. I'm happy to suggest hosting companies as well. Feel free to pm me.

I fairly sure you can enable people to download vimeo videos (without them needing to install a browser plugin). I'll double check in a bit

here's an example I just through together for you... featuring my latest video (the audio of which was recently broadcast from mount hope throughout the new york/new jersey metropolitan area, and upstate on a repeater) :eeyaa

there's a couple picture posts as well. play around with it, it's very flexible, and you can do some real fancy stuff with custom css and/or your own html template, but most likely you'll be satisfied enough, at least for a time, with one of the free themes.

the video post, if you just click where it says vimeo, it'll link though to the video page, where it is enabled for download, you'll see the download link. very easy. very free. eerily so in fact.

Hey thanks everyone thus far for the help that has been given.

I was wondering if anyone has tried doing a website with iWeb and MobileMe. Through Mac.

Seems like a pretty easy and painless way to do it. I'm a bit put off by what seems to be some daunting complexities of the other systems (where you buy a site through one of the big web hosting services).

Anyone tried that?

It's $99 a year, which seems comparable to the others.
