No, no wheel. Just the old three button emulation on a laptop. Middle click also does not open a new tab either. It seems like there was once a way to easily configure this, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out. I guess it's time to fire up VI and get under the hood.

Beyond my knowledge, I'm afraid. Besides, immediately after posting about restarting gdm my GUI froze (so I at least know it works to restart it) so I now believe you to be cursed and will leave helping you to those with more powerful ju-ju.

well, I've got an old laptop with 10.10 on it and I'm letting it it autoupdate to 11.04 I'll see if the issue is repeatable here.

well, this laptop's graphics is too old to run Unity, so it's switched back to what they're now calling 'ubuntu classic' and selected text in one program is paste-able in another as normal.

so try changing to the ubuntu classic session with the 'login screen' tool (System | Administration | Login Screen)
which should be do-able from the login screen on boot too.

What about the terminals? If you've got gpm installed you should be able to middle-click-paste in the TTYs as you normally can in the GUI, if it works in the TTYs but not the GUI it's probably an X issue, if not then it's kernel or hardware or something along those lines. I expect.
