Here in Los Angeles it's a strange time because it gets hot. The air patterns change, and suddenly here by the ocean it heats up like it does in the valley and deserts. The air doesn't move and everything stagnates and bakes.

It's the time I most want to leave Los Angeles and it's the time when I can least get away. The kids are back in school, work picks up, the obligations of all kinds suddenly tie me down to this hot place.

And we have no air conditioning because 90% of the year we don't need it. During the day the house heats up, then if it finally starts to cool off in the evening, the house stays radiantly hot until about 2 in the morning.

I don't want to sleep. I've been staying up till 3 and 4 a.m. working on stuff, sleeping till 11, sleeping during the cool times.

Watching someone else have fires this time of year is kind of strange. Usually it's us, although often in October, so we're still due for our fire season.
