Not the warmest welcome I've ever had in a bar, I must admit. Not the worst though either. Hope it wasn't actually directed at me. If I've done something wrong I'll take the remorseful hangover without the preceding drunkness. Serves me right. Maybe. Not sure.

Not you Ahab.

It's just, when 70% of your experiences in a certain venue become negative it's time to reassess.

Ah. The Mysogyny Thread. Haven't read very much of it - when I know something's going to be incomparably torturous and horrible and make me hate people that I otherwise respect I try avoid it as long as I can. Don't go leaving, though. Have a drink. You can get it free in here since you own the place.

Hey, c2W? .... wait for me!

I only just now saw this, but even if I'd seen it earlier, you still would have been ahead of me and not behind, pretty Willow. And I'm afraid that I'm either too tired or not drunk enough to tell you my reason for saying that, but fwiw, I do have one, I'm not just sweet-talking for sweet-talking's sake. I'll gladly tell you about it later for a nightcap today, if I may.

Hot sake, please, yum.

A hot sake for the lady, on the house! I think I just made a date tonight for hot sake on Tuesday night with a wonderful couple I know, though I'm not entirely certain. Such is my MO these days, to buck the Seattle isolation disease http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/pacificnw/2005/0213/cover.html. It's essential I think. I'd love to hear your reason, anytime C2W. Mine is that I'm afflicted because I truly love this place, and when I'm disappointed in it to an extreme degree it feels intolerable, as if I must abandon the place. Eh, nothing new really.

Love to you!

Have never been to Seattle and my image of it was fondly built up over years of watching Frasier and Niles - that article is really poignant. The picture of a cafe full of people all somewhere else from each other, yet who feel the need for at least just being around people is one I relate to because I'm one of them.
My social life is going to a cafe once or twice a week and have a big latte and watch passers-by from behind the window table and hope to catch a smile from the pretty Polish barista girl. Half a year goes past - and I realise I havent been out socially. A week went by and I realised I hadnt spoken to another person except for transactions in shops. I hardly even do that now that the supermarket has gone self-checkout.
Maybe London has some villagey resonances with Rain City - perhaps less social chit chat, except about the weather, the one thing that is always changing. With that, the sun has come out... I'll take that as an omen to be a bit brighter and maybe make some hay...

Hi Searcher, I'm glad you wandered in. I hear our weather is very similar to yours, rain, rain, rain, and temperate. I've never been to London either, but I would love to go! I am working on a project with an English friend of mine. I hope to visit her one day in combination with having an art show, but there are no concrete plans yet.

Do you not have a neighborhood pub? I'm not sure I would drink if I didn't have one. It's actually a rarity stateside, to have a neighborhood pub. I've been going to mine for about 6 years now and have met many friends there, but then I live in a community populated by artists (for the time being) and other odd creative types, so it's a great nesting site for malcontents. There's nothing I love more than a lovable malcontent.

Well, I don't want to sound like I'm encouraging drinking, heaven forbid! Anyway, I hope your social encounters increase and your isolation decreases, and if not, well, there's always this nutty RI place. Who knows, many of us might meet in person one day!

Hi Mary.

Why, you're a geographical neighbor, and your birthday is coming up. You must not neglect to revive the birthday thread on the actual day: http://rigorousintuition.ca/board2/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=30809&hilit=birthday

In the Interim, please accept the bounty and cheer of this venue where you can have virtually anything you want, including a Chippendale dancer, Image

Hmmm, yeah, it's never quite the same somehow, or is it? I don't know. Does it suit you?

Anyway, happy birthday Mary!

yep, take that article and search:Seattle replace:Portland and no one would doubt the authenticity. I think the prevalence and culture around certain recreational combustibles plays a part in the sociology of it too. (ie, the legal environment makes unknowns riskier. "is he cool?" "yeah. sure." "no man, look, I mean... is he cool?" "hmmm... ya know... I don't know..." "well shit")

eh, whaddaya gonna do? fergetaboutit already

BOWLING ALONE: THE COLLAPSE AND
REVIVAL OF AMERICAN COMMUNITY
by Robert D. Putnam | (New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000)

In a groundbreaking book based on vast new data, Putnam shows how we have become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbors, and our democratic structures-- and how we may reconnect.

Putnam warns that our stock of social capital - the very fabric of our connections with each other, has plummeted, impoverishing our lives and communities.

Putnam draws on evidence including nearly 500,000 interviews over the last quarter century to show that we sign fewer petitions, belong to fewer organizations that meet, know our neighbors less, meet with friends less frequently, and even socialize with our families less often. We're even bowling alone. More Americans are bowling than ever before, but they are not bowling in leagues. Putnam shows how changes in work, family structure, age, suburban life, television, computers, women's roles and other factors have contributed to this decline.

Hey PW, i am probably the elephant in a china store, hope I didnt blow up some important project to elevate the general awareness of males ....by bringing up my little grievance on the bitch, or my bitching about the bitch bitching.

Since I havent read the threadbefore that, I might have barged in the wrong time. (the issue I raised is intra-feminist, but these days, all things converge, not always to the benefit of the causes, but setbacks are important as well, to go over the little things on the way).

Anyway, that was definitely not intended as more than what it was. a ldies room exchange.

hope you are not going to sulk very long, I always learn from your posts.

Hi Hava! Our exchange was probably the least difficult of those I had in that thread.

Since then, in another thread here, I shot myself squarely in the foot, while it was still in my mouth no less, (I'm very talented). So I think a little break is in order, but then again, every time I say I'm going to take a break I end up posting a few days later.

Sulking can be fun though. :eeyaa :bigsmile

Anyway, glad to see you, please have a cocktail, or some tea. In fact I think I'll put a kettle on now.
