Thinking About the Universal Life Church

Postby theeKultleeder » Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:57 pm

I'm thinking about seeking ordination in the Universal Life Church - for ego reasons, and the title of "Minister."

Is there any weird reason I shouldn't? I like what they have to say on their website:

"The Universal Life Church has no traditional doctrine. We as an organization believe in that which is right. Each individual has the privilege and responsibility to determine what is right for themselves, as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. We do not stand between you and your God. We are active advocates of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

WE ARE ADVOCATES OF THE GOOD LIFE! We want to be competent, to be proficient, to be cooperative, to love our fellow man, to appreciate, to be humble, to be honest, to be moral, to live positively, to be what we profess."

I believe that stuff. I really do.

I'm an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church. It was easy.

I then applied for a minister license ($10) through the state and I now go to the county courthouse several afternoons/week and perform marriages for donations. It supplements my income nicely. The mileage and gas for my car are tax deductible. Someone has to marry them, right? These are the couples that go downtown to get their marriage license at the court house, and for various reasons, don't want a church wedding or want to be married immediately.

I'm not a religious person, but I do like the ULC.

Cool. I understand their PhD. in Religion is accredited. I just gave them my name for ordination, after thinking about it since I first posted this message...

Synchronicity!

I'd have to be very sad and lonely to want to join a church, and while I'm sad and lonely I'll never join a church which would take advantage of my sadness and loneliness.

The Clash - Sound of the Sinners

Sing along now..

As the floods of God
Wash away sin city
They say it was written
In the page of the Lord
But I was looking
For that great jazz note
That destroyed
The walls of Jericho
The winds of fear
Whip away the sickness
The messages on the tablet
Was Valium
As the planets form
That golden cross Lord
I'll see you on
The Holy Cross Roads
After all this time
To believe in Jesus
After all those drugs
I thought I was Him
After all my lying
And a-crying
And my suffering
I ain't good enough
I ain't clean enough
To be Him
The tribal wars
Burning up the homeland
The fuel of evil
Is raining from the sky
The sea of lava
Flowing down the mountain
The time will sweep
Us sinners by
Holy rollers roll
Give generously now
Pass the hubcap please
Thank you Lord

Yeah, but in 72 hours I'll be able to legally put "Minister" in my title. You can still send me money if you want...

I'm not a member of the ULC. I gave them my name and address for the sole purpose of gaining the title of Minister so I could marry people at the courthouse for cash. They're an on-line "church" that will ordain anyone that asks.

I haven't heard from them since - no email, phone calls or mail.

Three people can be a "church" under IRS tax laws and deem yourself non-taxable. That's the kind of church that the ULC is.

I'm not going to get into my religious views here, but I'll go so far as to say I'm not religious. I did it for the cash and tax breaks.

But I honestly believe this:

The ULC was founded in 1959 under the name "Life Church" by the Reverend Kirby J. Hensley. Disappointed with the Pentecostal church, Hensley decided to venture on his own to find his religion. After five years of studying various religions, according to his own statements, Hensley concluded that the proper religion may differ for each man, and everyone is entitled to choose his or her own religion. No one should be criticized or condemned for wanting to practice the belief of his or her choice.

If I was so passionate I'd found a Church of Me and let no-one join unless they were Me.

But that's me, I'm like that.

I already have that one. As soon as I have an extra 30$ I'm gonna be a subgenius pope, too.
