Tonight Letterman had the mother of Bill Hicks on and showed his censored routine.
Wikipedia already has a write-up so I'll turn it over to them:
Mary Hicks appeared on the Friday, January 30, 2009 "The Late Show". Letterman played Hicks' routine in its entirety. Letterman took full responsibility for the original censorship, apologized to Mary Hicks, Bill's mother, and declared he didn't know what he had been thinking when he pulled the routine from the original show.
I'm sure YouTube will fill in the rest.

I happened to see it on Letterman -- Hicks was great. What a loss.

I love Letterman for this.
He says it was probably insecurity that caused him to cut the piece and that seems right. The same explains his nervous silencing of Harvey Pekar over GE's weapons interests.
He's become much more fearless since his heart scare and more obviously set upon doing the right thing.

I think he has attributed this change to his son Harry. He cares more now about the future of this planet and our society where before his show was the most important part of his life.

Bill Hicks:
Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye.

His Mum was great. You could kind of see where Bill got it from. I wasn't so impressed by Letterman, though. He's had a long time to get thinfs right. Hasn't really done it yet.

He wasn't well by this point, but he was still right.

That was really touching, and probably sent a few folks looking for more Bill Hicks.
Good for Letterman. He has become smarter and more conscientious in his old age.
