Lt. Col. Bo Gritz claims CIA drug dealing, July 1988

On the Morton Downey, Jr. show and here is what I want to know. At the start of that clip Downey gives the audience high-fives before walking over to an already sitting Bo Gritz. Is that where Colbert got the idea? Around the four minute mark, during the video Gritz shot in Burma, you will see that Khun Sa uses the traditional talk show entrance where the guest walks over to the already sitting host, shakes hands and sits down. (Also note that Downey kisses attractive women and hugs the less attractive ones, a variation on Richard Dawson's kiss every woman method.)

That's exactly where Colbert got that from. Also, speaking of Richard Dawson, more than the movie Idiocracy the Trump thing reminds me of Dawson's character from Running Man.
