Avatar Movie and the Matrix movie

Postby sw » Sun Apr 25, 2010 9:30 pm

I just saw the Avatar movie yesterday for the first time.

It reminded me of the Matrix in many ways.

Not sure if this has been noticed or discussed. Maybe others did not like the movie.

I loved it.

I have to say I intended to see it the entire time it was out, then suddenly the commercials for it coming out on DVD were on the TV. Guess I missed it.

Three hours of sitting on my ass with my phone turned off? Hard to find time for that.

Oh well. Seems I'll be seeing it on the itty-bitty screen and not in 3D.

I look forward to this conversation when I finally do see it.

Sorry, I'm too much of a fan of the original Smurfs.

It's no secret that the general public can grasp aliens coming to a planet and trying to blend with the local beings in order to get at their planet's resources.

Avatar is the biggest movie of all time as far as I know. So, many of the general public must have seen it, understood it...

This movie seems to me to be exactly what is going on here on Earth if you just flip the roles and put the Earth people in the role as the local beings. This is probably exactly what has been taking place here on Earth...they made a movie about it and flipped a few things but no one in the general public seems to get this.

I don't think all people here experience the aspect of the movie where they go into Alpha sleep in one body and then wake up in the other body. I think that is pretty descriptive of what happens to me with my sleep problems. I'm not saying I am an alien, but I certainly have this whole other life going on when I sleep that leaves me exhausted when I wake up. All I can say is that I identify with the "living in two worlds" where when one is asleep, the other world is active and when the other is asleep, they go to the other place.

When I went to the sleep study doctor, all they could say is my sleep was too dense in the sleep. The other world during sleep is just as real as this world when awake. Hard to explain, but when I watched the Avatar movie, I identified.

Finally started Avatar. I know it was brilliant in animation and special effects, etc, but I just couldn’t get into it. I lasted until the scene where the main character (I forget his name) hobbles the winged creature. Macho cowboy dominance over wild animals is so tiresome, imo.

It did leave me wanting to visit the Washington Arboretum, view the stars on a clear night and visit an observatory, a park, the seashore, and drive to the mountains. And re-watch ‘Last of the Mohicans’ (from which it shamelessly stole scenes and Wes Stugi), along with the first two Alien films. So I guess it was an inspiring film, even if I missed The Point.

Avatar is one of the great hyped pieces of rubbish of all times. It deserved an Oscar for that distinction...

p.s. I agree with Norton about the Smurfs, Avatar's one trick pony was a human transferring in to the avatar of an alien. It was interesting for about 10-15 minutes. I think Abyss is probably Cameron's best movie and one of his least celebrated.

I still think Terminator is probably his best. With Aliens being a close second and ... maybe his best, actually.

I have to say the thing that always bugged me about Abyss was the lack of fish! WHERE WERE THE FISH? Had he made it now, they'd be everywhere, CG'ed and pasted in all over the place.

Cameron is one of the most brilliant filmmakers ever to walk the earth. Love him or hate him, the guy is a master of the craft of filmmaking, unlike, really, anybody else.

Haven't seen Avatar yet, btw. Didn't want to sit on my ass for three FUCKING hours. Kept putting it off, now I gotta watch it on my tiny little tv screen at home. Oh well.

One of the reasons I put off seeing Avatar as long as I did (I saw it just two weeks ago) was the critical critique it got from several people I think quite highly of here.

But I actually enjoyed Avatar very much (once I eventually saw it), and was extremely surprised by that fact.
