Banky's "Simpsons" couch gag.

Hard to tell, since the 'Simpsons' have mentioned Korea's 'animation practices' before, if this is really subversive or not.

Here's the clip, for those who can get Hulu:

The panda was a sharp touch.

But yeah - subversive? I don't know:

Although [executive producer Al] Jean said the segment was "toned down a little" for airing, "there was nothing unusual from the network in terms of notes or delays.

"Fox has a remarkable ability to make fun of itself and be gracious," he said.

Well, sure it does. If you happen to be The Simpsons.

I'm undecided whether this is subversion or co-option, or both at the same time.

“There is something very strange going on where it’s as if the state, or political powers, are discovering it can function in a totally cynical way..."

Maybe Fox will set up its own Human Rights NGO soon?

This could be a trial flexing of new muscle. Having the confidence to allow this is probably not a good sign.

With the increasing immunity and impunity with which the political powers conduct themselves, perhaps allowing this unflattering portrait is meant to be equated with a knowing self-critique, the next level in the softening process of diffusion, acceptance (and thus) perpetuation of the situation. So look, just the fact that we can present ourselves like this is sufficient social change. Relax, we're like on the job already. It also preempts external attack -- better to ally with hip and have Banksy on the inside rather than out.

Meanwhile, what changes.

Let's see.

Which, I felt, was immediately dulled by the inclusion of the Unicorn CD Hole Punch gag that followed right after.

Oh well.
