2010 gratitude/appreciation/sigh of relief thread

Postby crikkett » Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:04 am

2010 was a wild ride! What's bad got worse, what little good that's left got better, what's more is that so much secrecy is being exposed. Change indeed!

So today I want to remember things that I'm happy, relieved and grateful for.

I am relieved that the ocean floor did not collapse in the Gulf of Mexico.

I'm grateful for my friends and family, who seem to know when it's time to crowd around me as if they like me more than I like myself. I'm also grateful for my health and my husband.

I appreciate this board, Jeff for hosting it, and you all, because I can read and write about things that would earn me sidelong looks in some of the circles I run in. You're better writers than I am and trying to keep up improves my own skillz, even if I still can't shake the habit of ending sentences with prepositions.

I've also added a few names to my collection of heroes.

May 2011 be the best year since 1999. Happy New Year, RI!

DADT was repealed, which is a big step forward towards equal rights for LGBTQs.

The Austin Airport and Advisory Commission, which reviews and makes recommendations to the city council on aviation issues, unanimously passed a resolution Dec. 14, opposing deployment of the controversial Advanced Imaging Technology machines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Of course its only symbolic for now but ... its a start.

I'd like to give a shout out to Barracuda. He's taken on an often thankless job moderating RI for Jeff and the rest of us and performed the job quite well (AFAIC). We often don't see things the same but I do appreciate his wit and opinions and value his balance.

RI is a better place because of his work.

Same goes for Peregrine. She's not as obvious most of the time but I'm sure her voice is well considered when it comes to keeping us all behaving.

And of course, big ups to Admin. Again, we don't always see things through the same lens but I appreciate this place immensely and hope he knows this. Life wouldn't quite be the same without RI and it's many contributors.

Thank you all.

justdrew, for volunteering his time and expertise to get the lights turned back on after RI's great blackout of 9/11.

And thanks to all of you for making this a most interesting and curiously literate place.

It's a word to use not ending sentences on for.

Thanks, Cowbell!

Agree with CC, huge sigh of relief for RI which is an oasis of sanity. Also for some political progress in Cali including a new Dem governor, lt gov, and attorney general, also SoS although I don't believe she was on the November ballot. And of course Bernie Sanders in the Senate and a few other beacons in an otherwise dismal landscape.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

30 December 2010 Last updated at 18:52

University funds for children of fallen troops unveiled

The government has given details of a university scholarship scheme for children of British servicemen and women from England, Scotland and Wales killed on active duty.

In England, funding of £8,200 per year will be available from 2011 for further education or university courses.

The value of the scholarships will be reviewed when tuition fees in England rise to up to £9,000 a year from 2012.

Scholarship amounts are yet to be released for Scotland and Wales.

Plans were first announced in October for the scheme, which is open to the children of servicemen and women killed on active duty since 1990.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills estimates that the programme will fund up to 100 students at any one time.

The decision follows a pledge made by the Conservatives in early 2010, when they were in opposition.
'Not disadvantaged'

"It is surely right that we go out of our way to support the families of those brave servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep the nation safe," said Universities Minister David Willetts.

"The scholarships scheme will ensure that children who have lost a parent on active duty are not disadvantaged if they decide to study at university."

Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans, Andrew Robathan, said: "Nothing can compensate for the loss of a parent but I hope that through this scheme we can ensure that families have the enduring gratitude of the nation for the sacrifices they have made."

University fees are currently about £3,200 per year in England, and are paid up front through a government loan which graduates then pay back when they start earning.

But degree costs are to rise to up to £9,000 from September 2010, under controversial plans passed earlier this month.

Scottish students studying in Scotland do not have to pay fees.

Welsh students currently face similar charges to English ones, but the Welsh Assembly has said it will cover the cost of fee increases.

The government also said it would continue to help fund first further or higher education qualifications for people who had served at least four years in the armed forces.

The minimum service requirement would be waived for those who were medically discharged, it said.

Earlier this month, the government said it would provide schools with an extra £200 for every child of armed services personnel that they taught, primarily to help fund extra pastoral support.

Madre de Dios, he who played a tired old man on Barney Miller in 1975?

Well, Sim, that's truly the most mindfucking revelation I've encountered on RI in 2010. Happy New Year everyone! Or Happy New Years, as they say around theese parts, anyways.

Carol Channing, 90, Angela Lansbury, 85, Chita Rivera, 77.

The other night at the Kennedy Center Honors. Old when I was young, and I thought Carol and Angela were as dead as Abe Vigoda. Chita, wow, hmmm, I just might...

Happy New Year, you old bags!

Blessed is the character actor who can play 20 years over his age.

Perversely grateful for the G20's visit to my hometown, for the dissolution of that think globally/act locally canard.

Wrong: This is the motorbike I lost my virginity on.

Right: This is the motorbike on which I lost my virginity.

Although, this only applies in Latin and shouldn't be taken to apply to English usage. Prepositions are perfectly acceptable to end a sentence with.

Also, what is a LGBTQ? LGBT I've heard of.

And as 2011 has been worse than I expected I don't feel like sighing with relief.
