I am now worthless

Postby Stephen Morgan » Thu Jan 05, 2012 9:32 am

My debts no longer outweigh my assets. I therefore have a net worth in the vicinity of zero.

Feel free to issue congratulations.

Congratulations!

Me, I'm enjoying a period in the black, but a late-January holiday and a February dental implant will return me to the red for about a year, if I can pay it back at about $400/month.

Do you therefore rent, not own, your dwelling?

If you own, do you hold the deed or is there any kind of note on the place? No equity?

If you rent, do you plan to go into debt to own, keep paying your landlord indefinitely, or await some due inheritance?

Congratulations, Stephen. Worthless is pretty good these days.

I have about twenty thousand to my name, and owe almost that in credit card and college loan debts, which I have zero intention of paying. As far as I'm concerned I'm twenty grand in the black, and I couldn't give two shits that I get daily phone messages from $10-an-hour workers reminding me about my past. But I pay rent in a tiny apartment, and, given my credit status, don't see any possibility for owning, though I may eventually move in with my brother, a more responsible alter ego with greater wealth and perfect credit. And then someday we get a big inheritance.
It's that inheritance thing that makes the big difference, huh?

Worthlessness is overrated, imho. It may seem brightly romantic now, but once the glamour rubs off you'll find yourself right back where you started.

I've been chased by bailiffs before. Nasty fuckers.

I've had a couple of inheritances in the past, although not particularly big ones.

I rent from a private landlord. Given the average life expectancy I can't be expecting any inheritances any time soon, not that I'd trust any of my family members to leave me anything anyway. Not that any of them have got all that much, but a couple of them are likely candidates, no children of their own, in their fifties or sixties, own houses, and so on. Otherwise it'll be the renting for the foreseeable future.

I know my landlord didn't put my deposit into the legally required government guarantee scheme, so should I be kicked out I could sue him for three times the amount. Of course I haven't got enough for another deposit first, so there would be a period of homelessness too. Got to take every possible source of income, though. For example Open University courses, doing a years worth of education makes me about forty pounds in cash money. Unfortunately the government, bunch of thieving Tory bastards, removed the extra housing benefit paid to people with relatively low rents. Cost me 55p a week.

So realistically I can't count on an inheritance, don't have enough income to get a mortgage, and therefore must keep paying rent indefinitely.

Or, perhaps I can knock up an immigrant and get myself a council place. Low rents, life time tenancies until the Tories get their way, good stuff.

You're not going to be able to "knock up an immigrant" if you think yourself to be worthless. You're not if you think like that. I'm as worthless as you. I have a decent job, but honestly, we're all stringing it along. I have only a few hundred to my name. That's it. No savings, no nothing. From past posts, it sounds like you live alone. You need someone. And you have someone. You have us. But, you need someone if you don't have that person already. It's fucked up and bullshit, but it is also what it is.

There are no answers. But, we're here for you. Day by day, we just muddle on. Let's make the most of the muddle!

Stephen, what'd you find for work? I remember you were looking fruitlessly at one point.

I continue to look fruitlessly. I am, however, particularly frugal. I don't spend much on food. I eat fruitlessly. That's right, I owe it all to wheat!

Get a job with the wheat lobby!

A job with the wheat lobby. :-)

So I was right about bread as the food of poverty. In that case- eat away. Do you splurge for butter? If I were super poor I think I'd keep the butter and probably do dried beans, which have a lot of protein and are dirt cheap.

Do you have a field of work that you're looking in, Stephen? My favorite low-wage jobs have been taking care of autistic people and pizza delivery. The latter I wasn't actually very good at, but I had fun, anyway. Why the *fuck* aren't the numbers on the houses, and why on earth does it jump from 42 to 126? I bet the numbering system was much more sensible in Soviet Russia... I remember thinking....

There are almost always caretaking and delivery driving jobs available in the college town I live in, as well as canvassing for stupid liberal non-profits, which I'd have to be at absolute starvation to do.
