You call this a shitstorm? Wait till Hugh gets wind of your drafting..
ONE IMPORTANT THING, MODERATORS:
This is a very easy mistake to make as a moderator, and one I've made
MANY times on other boards:
Please be
VERY CAREFUL when you quote a member. If you look now as a Moderator, you will see that you have an edit button right beside the quote one for every post in a thread. It's very easy to carelessly hit a button you're used to, edit out a person's irrelevant commentary to your comments, hit submit, and lose that person's original post.
There is
NO back button to salvage it as it's written/overwritten directly to Jeff's SQL database, so
BE CAREFUL!
Also, if anyone has any questions before I have the opportunity to complete my Mod Guide, go ahead and post them here and they'll be addressed by Jeff or myself.
Another very important issue:
This Moderator Section is invisible to other posters for several reasons. One of which is depositing spam threads to get them out of circulation until we can log the IP for adding to Jeff's ban database. Another is for reviewing problematic members, and if needed, temporarily moving a problem thread here for review/discussion as opposed to outright deletion. The fact that we'll eventually be forced to have candid discussions about problem members requires this area's security to remain intact. As a Moderator, you have the responsibility of helping preserve that. One of the most important things that you can do to prevent a security breach is very simple:
I know it can be a pain, but do NOT use cookies/auto-loggin functions to access this forum.
If you have been doing so, please delete any cookies associated with this forum immediately. On it's face, the freeware version of phpBB isn't exactly the hieght of security, and backdoors are possible, especially when you have someone's cookies. I experienced an extremely nasty hack at another forum where the hacker retrieved the Admin's cookie, and consequently had FULL ACCESS to the entire forum, which led to the deletion of several thousand posts within an hour's time.
No cookies here, please..
