Ok, guys, I'm more than a bit worn out on this stuff, already..It'staking over the board worse than Kudzu vines.

Peer consensus?

Fellow modertors please weigh in and present your feedback on the current seeming infiltration of the psuedo-sciences proposed by Dragon and Donovan.

That has gone on for some weeks here, and appears to be amplifying. I have spoken to Jeff directly about this, and we are of a mutual opinion, but it would be an insult to your intergrations as RI Modertors were you not to sound off on your own interpretations of recent developments, as well as a proposed solution if one is agree to.

We need to address these members directly. They take great liberties here that I find completely disrespectful to fundamental energy concepts and applications and fully hubris-bound.

These characters will eventually drive off quality posters. I'm diametrically opposed to that development.

I want the old RI back with discriminating and provocative members.

What say you?

Man, they're like an infestation of fleas. Frankly, I think a new rule needs added. Yeah, I hate rules, too, but how else can you HELP them to identify the outlines of what the site is supposed to be and not be? Something needs to be added that this site is not to be used for the purpose of promoting one's personal religion, products, pornagraphic material, medicinal practices, blah, blah, blah...

et, firepit that thread addressed to you already!

As for the orgone shit, I really don't follow it. Are they trying to sell it? Posting links to sell it? If so, ban the practice. If you don't, every spammer on the net will find their way here. If they persist, ban them.

Plant a sticky and give everyone what for on this, a clear and concise policy, something with bullet points:

*No posting links to commercial sites
*No overt or covert sales pitches
....so on
let them know we mods all agree, and see what happens from there. Delete, data dump, firepit or whatever the existing orgone threads.

Pseudo science? Unless they are selling something, leave it be. a crazy idea will die it's own death, what with the savvy posters we have here.

Cheers

Sonya

Oh by the way, address these posters directly. Not doing so will give them an "out." Doing so will serve as an example to all future hucksters.

Not yet. I don't like being a center of attention, but this gives others sympathetic to our POV the chance to speak out as well, and I think there's a substantial number of them out there who might otherwise have been too timid to say anything in a different thread.

I'm also feeding out some rope for those morons to hang themselves with.

I'm off to see Pan's Labyrinth. If things go ape shit while I'm gone, one of you please move the thread for us, but don't move it unless it gets out of hand.

Be back a little later,
D

Agree on everyting else, not sure I agree on this point, if you're talking about the orgonshit threads. They're using Jeff's site to promote. Ignoring those types just encourages them. Have you looked at the number of hits on that thread? What's up with that? The savvy posters will disappear if the fleas are allowed to take over. I've watched it happen before. The problem is that it takes a LOT of savvy ones to dilute the crazy stuff. It goes ok so long as the crazy stuff is diluted. If the crazy stuff keeps up, it drives off the savvy ones, which leaves fewer savvies to dilute the goofies. Diluting is the key. Yes, this is a high weirdness site, pushing the envelope, but at what point do you sacrifice vigorous for goofy? Discussing the far out and unusual is one thing, fascinating even, but promoting a personal aspect/service/product is, I suspect, not good for the site. They're using the site for their own purposes, basically.

Jeff', what do you need from us? If you're ok with the orgonites, then it's hands-off.

Enough rope

I agree that overt commercial solicitations should be prohibited, and that anyone doing so should be given a public and private warning. That seems fair.

There are a few reasons I'm against taking any kind of action against them at this point in time:

1. Some worthwhile topics have arisen out of the mess -- the abuses of Reichian therapists, metaphysical geometry (even if some of it is silly), and some alleged weird activity surrounding those who get into the subject (of which I'm agnostic, but OI's reports sound authentic... maybe).

2. The orgonite crowd, whatever they really are, are interesting from a sociological perspective. From what I've been able to put together, they are a web-based, open-source cult, built on a foundation of conspiracy theory and new age beliefs, actively recruiting on the nets. That fascinates me.

3. They haven't really broke any of the rules. Unless I missed something.

4. I don't think regular RI readers are prone to jumping on their train. It's pure nonsense, and I think most people would agree.

5. I think it's quite possible they really believe what they are saying.

Some things I definitely don't like about them:

1. dragon's constant desire to send other members his mudballs and other material. Should the group ever run afoul of the law, anyone believed to have transacted with them would be technically connected to them. Suppose a box of mudballs were to show up in a Congressman's office, for instance -- possible biological weapons. I know I wouldn't want a box of his mudpatties or a "triniti wand" in my possession if that happened.

Nope, I don't like this "gifting" thing.

2. The talk of neutralizing people and equipment. dragon said something about remotely harming a child molester, and how satisfying it felt. That set off warning bells. Thanks to et for first nailing dragon on all his talk of neutralizing gov't/military targets.

3. And, most importantly, though I think most RI posters and readers are less likely to get roped into a cult, one can never be sure. I've called dragon out on the likelihood of pushing mentally unstable people over the edge. He hasn't responded to that, nor has he responded to my question about my remote viewing etheric parasites in his brain (for obvious reasons).

So I say let's keep calling them out on their nonsense, and pointing out their harmful actions when we see them. It's best to do it as coldly and clinically as possible, with a good dose of humor. They thrive on persecution, so I suggest we look at this as an "exposure" exercise. Bring light to their flimsy arguments, not heat.

I suspect they'll go away.

But I'm always open to what you guys think. And I could change my mind if it really gets out of hand -- I just don't think it's there yet.

I say send them back to their educateyourself cave. Something about that site has set the hair up on my back for a long time, anyway. Let them promote their stuff somewhere else.

Use your discretion, but I think at least all threads promoting orgone that pop up in GD ought to be moved.
