I am going to start pecking away at the back pages of General Discussion.

I will edit each title to say MOVED.

just so everyone knows....

annie, please don't edit the title. Just by leaving the "leave shadow" box clicked it'll do that in General Discussion, and there's no need for that signifier at its new home.

And that's too much like work.

Is it possible to delete the last few pages of general discussion?
Now that I am on page 162 I'm finding it tedious to click back from the last page.

Sure, that makes sense.

Be careful there-how do you delete from the main page without deleting the thread altogether? When you open a moved thread in GD you go to the forum it has been moved to-maybe I'm missing a step in the process?

True. We'd lose the original link that way.

Here's an idea, though it may be ungainly.

Each page has 50 threads. The top of page 1 is formatted as thread 0. You can see that by looking at the final number of the URL:

http://rigorousintuition.ca/board/viewf ... =0&start=0

Currently, the final page, 168, starts at post 8350:

http://rigorousintuition.ca/board/viewf ... start=8350

page 167 at 8300:

http://rigorousintuition.ca/board/viewf ... start=8300

and so on.

You don't need to be limited to natural page breaks. You can change the number to whatever you like, and it will format the next 50 threads in sequence.

Say randomly, starting at post, oh, 3423:

http://rigorousintuition.ca/board/viewf ... start=3423

How does that sound?

Jeff, I am the furthest thing from a techie, so type very....very.....slowly.

Do you mean we somehow change the url? Please give a step by step tutorial on what you mean.

I'm sorry - yes, that's what I meant to say.

If you're using Firefox, it means editing the url in the white navigation box at the top of the page. Just the final number in the line, following &start=

I think I understand this. I will give it a try.

Thanks. If it's a hassle let me know and we'll try something else.

Also, I'm wondering (just throwing this out there), but maybe we don't want/need a redirect link saved in GD for every single thread. Otherwise we're going to have 56+ pages of "moved to" subject lines. Thinking about it, it seems ugly and needless. But what could be the criteria? Number of replies/seriousness of subject?

I'm giving myself a headache here. Don't give yourselves one, or borrow mine.

that's what I was thinking.

Most everything fits in a specific category fairly well.

I'm hoping folks will start checking the sub forums and give me a heads up if topics are mis-categorized.

If a thread has one post comprised of a link or quoted article I send it to the Data Dump unless the subject is obvious in the thread title.

Everything about Israel goes to Middle East.

Mark Foley and his page fondling friends have been relegated to Deep Politics, unless the story's really greasy then it goes to Fascist Sexuality.

I feel like there coud be a sub forum for Speculative History and Science ( pyramids, secret irish mystics in africa, CERN stuff)
and also some distinction for N. American Political nonsense vs European.
If it's too hard to figure out, I send it to Other.

I would prefer to see Gen Discussion at ten pages and the sub-forums bursting with threads.

this reminds me of bookstore days.....

Wait: Wouldn't driving them from the GD, create unworking links for individuals or bloggers who linked to them in their articles?
