Some local Catholics are standing with a national organization of nuns now facing scrutiny from the Vatican.

The group's called the national Leadership Conference of Women Religious. The Vatican called for an investigation into the group for what the church calls "serious doctrinal problems."

Tuesday, protestors in front of St. Mary’s Cathedral downtown defended statements made by the 1,500-member strong organization.

The statements are about the Catholic church's view on homosexuality and male-only priesthood. The Vatican called the nuns’ position “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.”

The group first caught criticism from church leaders in 2007 over their aforementioned “radical” ideas. They also made news in 2010, when they stood behind President Obama's health care plan.

Now, the Vatican has called on an American bishop to reign in the all-female church group. Supporters of the nuns believe Women Religious should be heard by the church.

"Nuns are interested in as with anyone with a brain would be of investigating
what's going on in the church, how to make our organization better," Catholic Parishioner Kay Arnold said.

Msgr. Mike Sis, Vicar General of the Austin Diocese released a brief statement saying:

"Religious women have been a vital part of the mission of the Catholic Church in the Austin area throughout our history. We are forever indebted to these sisters for their generous service in parishes, Catholic schools, hospitals, maternity homes, youth ministry, service to the poor, outreach to immigrants and diocesan administration. We will continue to work together in bringing Christ to the world and bringing the world to Christ
