Austin Protesters march against Monsanto, GMOs

Critics call the measure the “Monsanto Protection Act."

Monsanto is an international agriculture company that is a leading producer of Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs.

Those who are against GMOs say the act prohibits the federal government from stopping the use of genetically altered foods. Many critics of GMOs question the health and safety of the products.

"I want our food to be clean and pure, and I don't want it to be polluted by big corporate interests," said Stephanie Mulder, one protester who walked down Congress Avenue on Saturday morning.

"Monsanto is making GMOs in the rain, so we have to be here in the rain telling them we don't want it," said another protester, Zac Earle.

Protestors started at Brush Square Park on Fifth Street and worked their way to the Capitol. Similar marches against GMOs were planned for 249 other cities across the nation.
