I've been musing on this for a little while, seeing if I could fit in here on this forum first before suggesting it, but I think this would be a great thing to try.
I suggest we start up a Book Club, pick a title (by voting perhaps, or some sort of random selection) and all agree to read it (or re-read/skim it if already read) Furthermore, like a class, I'd say we break the book into four parts of 'reading assignments,' with each book spanning a month (or less) At each stage we could post our reflections on the book.
Alternatively, someone very psyched about a certain book and familiar with it could 'teach' it - providing questions for discussion and debate, and offering a sense of the book's possible larger context and meaning.
An ideal book would be one readily-available in ebook format, so that everyone could acquire copies quickly and freely. While reading at a computer is not as good an experience as reading treeware, it is better than nothing.
The real problem would be deciding on a book, of course, with the diverse interests of the members here. But there doesn't have to be just one - as long as more than one person wishes to do a book, then go for it - it is not as though we are short on 'class' space here. Although the real value would be in getting a lot of people to participate in one or two books for the diverse perspectives that would come out of it.
Does this sound interesting to anybody? Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions on how we could do this?
