RI Book Reading Club

Postby §ê¢rꆧ » Tue Jan 15, 2008 4:43 am

I've been musing on this for a little while, seeing if I could fit in here on this forum first before suggesting it, but I think this would be a great thing to try.

I suggest we start up a Book Club, pick a title (by voting perhaps, or some sort of random selection) and all agree to read it (or re-read/skim it if already read) Furthermore, like a class, I'd say we break the book into four parts of 'reading assignments,' with each book spanning a month (or less) At each stage we could post our reflections on the book.

Alternatively, someone very psyched about a certain book and familiar with it could 'teach' it - providing questions for discussion and debate, and offering a sense of the book's possible larger context and meaning.

An ideal book would be one readily-available in ebook format, so that everyone could acquire copies quickly and freely. While reading at a computer is not as good an experience as reading treeware, it is better than nothing.

The real problem would be deciding on a book, of course, with the diverse interests of the members here. But there doesn't have to be just one - as long as more than one person wishes to do a book, then go for it - it is not as though we are short on 'class' space here. Although the real value would be in getting a lot of people to participate in one or two books for the diverse perspectives that would come out of it.

Does this sound interesting to anybody? Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions on how we could do this?

I think it's a terrific idea §ê¢rꆧ. Go about it however you like and post a link in the General Discussion to make sure everyone has a chance to see it and participate.

Just a suggestion, but today my daughter was waxing rhapsodic about Jimi Hendrix and I told her I would buy The Covert War Against Rock for her to read, especially since she also loves Tupac. I'm sure there are excerpts online so people could post those and we could discuss that portion of the book. This would apply to any book the majority chooses to read if they don't have the book or access to it.

Thats a good idea, Google reader makes portion of many books available online. I wonder how much the offer, or if it differs by title.

Oh, just call me Secs  - §ê¢rꆧ is hard to type ...

The book I am psyched about ATM is Daniel Hopsicker's "Barry and 'The Boys': The CIA, the Mob and America's Secret History", but I do not have an online copy.

I read Barry and 'The Boys' some time ago but I borrowed it. Maybe I could get it back. I'm sure a lot of folks around here have it or have read it. It shouldn't be too hard too transcribe portions, if we have to.

BTW, I copy and paste your name.

I think the best thing to start with would be Jeff's book! I see I can preorder (cheaply from overstock.com, too). I bet that's one we could all agree on... will it be out this month? (it says 1/8 on the overstock.com site)

BTW, what did you think of "Barry and 'the boys'", sunny? I thought the style was a little sensationalistic ("...because being connected means you never have to say you're sorry..."). And he uses the ellipsis way too much, which is sort of lazy writing IMO.. but he lays a lot of interesting facts out, and speaks with a lot of primary sources. Overall, great journalism. It has me wanting to delve further into the subject matter...

I have a problem with Hopsicker's lack of citations, but I love that he sounds like an old time muckraker writing for a yellow rag with screaming headlines...who nevertheless often has fascinating and relevant information.

I think using Jeff's book as our first selection is a fabulous idea. I'm going over to preorder right away.
