To get back on topic; I can totally see why someone who has witnessed terrible events such as those described by johnny nemo would not wish to revisit the trauma by watching horrific scenes in films. However, surely we can all agree there is a whole spectrum of responses to this kind of thing? It's totally fair enough for one person to feel this way, but that doesn't make it wrong for anyone to not have the same response.

Also, the fact that other people have experienced real horror in their lives while I (thankfully) have not, has no bearing on my enjoyment of totally fictional horror.

As for desensitisation, I'm never sure about that whole idea... I mean, I've watched a lot of horror movies in my time. As a kid I was terrified of anything like that... halloween masks etc... but now I really enjoy such stuff. However I am totally NOT desensitised to real live violence and/or gore, and hate to see it in any form.

Consider it like this: As a child, fictional monsters terrified me as if they were a real threat... but now I can enjoy them, and seperate fact from fiction. IE i have been 'desensitised' .....aka grown up.
