What steps have you taken to CYA?

Postby Al Gomas » Sun Oct 23, 2005 4:16 pm

What have you done to secure your assets against financial implosion? Given the trajectory of world events, I feel the need to protect my nest egg and would love some advice...

I sold my house and bought a smaller one in a less expensive area in a different state in 2003, in anticipation of the housing bubble popping and/or deflation occuring.

I also have reduced my debts.

For savings, I've taken everything I had in a bank savings account and purchased precious metals, and a safe to store them in.

I bought a wood stove rather than be stuck with high energy costs (my home has an oil furnace).

I also cashed in an IRA early in order to install solar panels on my house. I figured that the money in the IRA probably wouldn't be there or it wouldn't be worth much in 8 years when I turn 59-1/2. The penalty is 10% for early withdrawal.

I'm glad I did these things because I expect some serious economic downturns in the not-too-distant future. Some people think it'll be within months.

I've been reducing the debt. Paying off credit cards and as soon as I am done with that, will begin putting everything into my house to pay it off as fast as possible. I just hope there is enough time left to do all this.

Also, I am keeping enough food for a year stored at all times. Along with soaps, detergents, medicines, first aid kits etc.

Now, keep in mind most of these measures are only good if we are able to stay in one place where we are now.

I think debt reduction is the way to go, if at all possible. Especially getting rid of mortgages and ccards of all types.

We've been keeping our cars longer and repairing them instead of buying new ones. We have enough clothing to last us a long time. Enough blankets, things like that.

Luckily, we won't die if we have no heat at all so that is not an issue for us. We seldom turn on the heat here, anyway, we just never have. Most days you don't really need it, just bundle up in sweats or fleece and you're good to go. It gets chilly when showering, but if you turn on the shower a minute or two it steams up the bath and it's warm enough to jump in and out and get clean. (I know that sounds tacky, but, well, that's just us. LOL)

We are getting ready to buy a water filter and a generator for emergency use and are considering the solar panels for heating the water, but I think we can get away with not having those, even in emergency, so the panels are not a priority.

We've been experimenting with alternative medicines to boost our immune systems in case of sickness and have found some pretty good ones, especially for colds, flu and upper respiratory infections. I think that is where the danger really lies, is in pneumonia like illnesses.

Hope this helps some.

Edited to add: I don't think anything is going to protect paper money assets. I believe the most important thing is to can the mortgage asap if you have one. The only reason I am paying off the ccards first is that so far we've been able to write the interest off taxes for the mortgage. And with the new laws, if you don't pay the ccards then they will be able to attach your house with judgements, even if you file for bankruptcy, according to the one just passed and taking effect this month.

Edited by: pugzleyca3 at: 10/23/05 3:04 pm

pugzleyca3, excellent preparations. Like you, I've also got food storage for a year for 3 of us, and have stocked up on other essentials that might be hard to come by if things get bad. I talked about this in the Parlour where I included the following suggestions and resources:

Water:
1. If you have a well, buy a hand pump. Simple Pump is a great solution because you can have it installed concurrently with your electric pump.
2. If you don't have a well, consider buying some large containers -- 15 gal or more -- and use them to collect rain water. You can purify the water with chlorine (buy that at a pool and spa store), or purification tablets. You can buy water filters in various forms to get the chlorine and microbes out. Here's a place where you can buy containers: USA Emergency Supply.

Electricity:
1. Solar PV panels and batteries, if you can afford this route, will keep your basics going at home (no a/c though, but fluorescent lights, small appliances).
2. There are numerous tools and devices you can purchase that require no electricity. Lehman's and RealGoods are excellent sources.

Food:
1. Stock up on canned goods of all kinds from the grocery store -- especially canned chicken, kidney beans, vegetables. Also get rice and other dry goods that have a decent shelf life.
2. Order wheat and dry goods from suppliers who specialize in this. My favorite is Walton Feed.

Cooking:
1. Outdoor brick barbeque or grill -- wood for fuel.
2. Sun Oven.
3. Wood stove in winter. Outdoor wood stove in summer. Cast iron cookware and dutch ovens.

Heating:
1. Wood stove, if you own your own home.
2. Portable kerosene heater, if you have access to kerosene or can store it in a tank (for example, if you have a tank outside your home for oil heat). Obviously, this is a short-term solution in the event that kerosene becomes unavailable.
3. Extra blankets and warm clothing for colder climates.

Transportation:
1. Bicycles -- with baskets for holding goods.
2. Your own two feet -- but, get a rolling cart of some kind to make it easier to transport goods.

Money:
1. Keep some cash on hand.
2. Purchase precious metals as a hedge against inflation. CMI Gold & Silver.

Books on topics that you could need reference to, from medical information to cooking to survival how-tos:
Lehman's
Walton Feed
From The Wilderness
In The Wake (free downloadable booklet)

Misc:
Stock up on razor blades, batteries, hydrogen pyroxide, baking soda, medicines, prescriptions, other things that could be hard to get but necessary.

For some excellent reading and enlightenment, I suggest the 3-part series by Dmitry Orlov called Post-Soviet Lessons for a Post-American Century on the From The Wilderness website. It'll wake you up bigtime. The link goes to Part 3, but search out the first two parts as well -- they're also on the From The Wilderness site.

Here's hoping for the best! (while preparing for the worst)

Edited by: manxkat at: 10/23/05 3:21 pm

Don't have any assets, but don't really have any debt either.

I live in what could be construed as a "compound". We have bomb shelter stocked for a long time. The people who built our house we're scared that the reds were coming. We should be fine. Hell, high water, Star Demons, whatever. Let them come.

Halo, last time I heard "Let them come"...

...it was the King at Helms Deep and he was talking about like a gazillion orcs, and they cleaned his clock, and would have massacred everybody if the Deux ex machina cavalry hadn't showed up in time for the end of the movie. Even one smallesque bunker buster bomb and I'd say 99% of the '60s-era fallout shelters would be but a memory. Now, if you're living at Cheyenne Mountain*, or in that vault in the Utah mountains where the Mormons keep their genealogy records, that's different

*"The underground Combat Operations Center (COC) was designed to ensure 70 percent probability of continuing to function against a five megaton weapon with a three mile circular error probability (CEP), be self-sufficient for brief emergency periods, have backup communications and television intercom with related commands, limited, but adequate, sleeping facilities are available within the main Complex for use during button-up exercises or actual emergencies, and protection against fallout and biological and chemical warfare. The facility was ultimately designed to withstand a multi-megaton yield weapon at a range between 1 ½ nautical miles. "

I've tried a few, but am not impressed: Elderberry syrup, garlic and vit. C. Got any other ones that work better?

You will not be able to protect or endure the coming re-socialization of the planet. Don't waste your time or thoughts on survival. Only the meek...and the chosen will survive; chosen by those that control.
~Anglo

Definitely Samento, the extract liquid made by Nutrimedix. You can get it at www.thegreenpharmacy.com (It is cheaper there, but is about 35.00 an oz.) It's got many healing properties and is a great preventative according to what I've read.

I posted here before, I had the flu and was completely cured in 9 and a half hours. My niece too was cured in a matter of hours. I am no longer depressed, it's helped dry up a cough I've had for months or even years, I have more energy and my sleeping disorder which I've had for years is now gone. I actually sleep nights and get up in the morning. Before, I'd stay up for 2 days at a time. Overall, feeling pretty great if it weren't for these bastards trying to take over my world and my privacy. All this has happened in about 12 days of taking it.

I also recommend cleansing the body's systems with herbs in order to increase liver, gallbladder and digestive function.

I take Slippery Elm Bark (powdered inner bark only, the other bark does not work or get the liquid extract - do not get capsules, best is powdered bark, can be bought by the lb, you can use this on wounds and it instantly cures nausea, great for the throat and lungs), Milk Thistle, Digestive Enzymes, a good multi-vitamin and minerals. The milk thistle helps the liver and gall bladder, digestive enzymes assist the colon and digestive tract and the vitamins and minerals are self explanatory.

The Samento is supposed to be an immunomodulator which causes your immune system to boost itself. There's lots of information on it online if you just type in Samento.

Edited by: pugzleyca3 at: 10/23/05 11:20 pm
