Nuala

Postby Col Quisp » Fri Dec 09, 2005 3:30 pm

It's odd that Kubrick has Dr. Bill ask one of the models -- Nuala -- to spell her name, as if to emphasize it. I looked it up and it is short for Fionnoula, which means white shoulders (which is also a perfume!) or fair shoulders.

Quote:
The name comes from fionn + ghuala "fair shouldered." The chieftan King Lir and his wife Aobh had a daughter Fionnoula and three sons Aedh, Conn and Fiachra. When Aodh died Lir's new wife Aoife was so jealous of her husband's love for his children that she cast a spell on them and turned them into swans and condemned them to spend 300 years on Lake Daravarragh, 300 years on the Sea of Moyle and 300 years on Innis Glora. However, if they heard a Christian bell in Ireland they would become people again. One morning they were awakened by the sound of a Mass bell. St. Patrick had arrived. The children were brought to him and he baptised them and they have lived on in Irish mythology as the "Children of Lir" (read the legend).

There's an Irish, feminist author named Nuala O'Faolain whose best selling book was published in 1996, called "Are you Somebody?" She views marriage as enslavement.

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
I was born in a Dublin that was much more like something from an earlier century than like the present day. I was one of nine children, when nine was not even thought of as a big family, among the teeming, penniless, anonymous Irish of the day. I was typical: a nobody, who came of an unrecorded line of nobodies. In a conservative Catholic country, which feared sexuality and forbade me even information about my body, I could expect difficulty in getting through my life as a girl and a woman. But at least -- it would have been assumed -- I wouldn't have the burden of having to earn a good wage. Eventually some man would marry me and keep me.

Emphasis added.
www.arlindo-correia.com/020403.html

Back to the women and classist hierarchy of EWS:

All of the red-haired women are depicted as prostitutes, at different levels. At the bottom are Domino, a street hustler, and possibly her roommate, Sally, who live in a squalid cramped apartment that Dr. Bill calls "cozy." Next is the daughter of the costumer (played by Leelee Sobieski), who is pimped out to the highest bidder. Next is Mandy, at Ziegler's and the Illuminati's beck and call, drugged and naked thru the whole film. However, she sports a huge diamond ring and was an "ex-beauty queen." Next on the list is Alice, who is "kept" sort of like a pet, and doesn't have to do much of anything. She holds Bill in contempt and disdain, and dreams of laughing at him as he watches her cuckold him. At the top is Ziegler's wife, who stands at his side both at the initial party and at the ritual.

These women have all the REAL power (spiritual). The men are just play-acting at the ritual, and there would be nothing gained without the sex-magick and Mandy's self-sacrifice. The men have artificial power (money). It is interesting that Dr. Bill is named after the dollar bill. Also, interesting that he rips apart a $100 bill in his bid to maintain control of the cab driver. Franklin is on the $100 bill. A member of the Hell-fire club. Also could relate to the Franklin scandal at Boy's Town. Dr. Bill looks so self-satisfied when he rips up this C-note. But the joke is on him. It's his lack of limousine and the rental slip for the costume that supposedly gives away his true identity.

The finale is bleak. The PTB get away with murder, the Harfords go back to sleep, and the message is: don't poke your beak into these secret societies. You're lucky to be alive.

Another "doubling"

Postby Col Quisp » Fri Dec 09, 2005 3:39 pm

Bill lies to the coffee shop waitress that he has important medical information to give to Nick that can't wait until later that night, so he can get his address. Turns out that Domino got some important medical information that morning --- she is HIV positive.

The mirror-sex scene: Alice was staring at herself in the mirror for who knows how long before Bill tries to initiate sex with her. She keeps looking back at the mirror, and looks depressed, detached, or disgusted, I can't tell. She seems to "snap" into a different personality after peeing into the mirror. She even says "it's not the pot," that is making her bitch out Bill for flirting with the models. She becomes completely irrational, and then has a "laughing fit." Looks like alters, to me. Bill acts as if he's seen this all before; it's something he's used to.

Clearing the Eye

Postby Col Quisp » Fri Dec 09, 2005 4:04 pm

One last comment from me for awhile:

Here's an oddity: The non-Nuala model refreshes Bill's memory about when they first met. "You were kind to me once," "Only once?" he asks (an instance of non-doubling!). She tells him she was standing outside the Rockefeller Center or Plaza (why Rockefeller?) and got something in her eye (about 1/2 of 5th Avenue) and he came to her rescue as a gentleman with a clean handkerchief.

So, are we to believe that a person of high morals will "clear our eyes" of 1/2 of 5th Avenue (advertising and consumerism?) so we can see Rockefeller (Illuminati?) Center?

Not sure if anyone offered this hypothesis yet...?

I think the movie's name "Eyes Wide Shut" is borrowed from a common stage hypnotist's act of the same name:
...the effect on the hypnotized person is that no matter how hard they try, they just can't command their eyelids to open.
Kubrick was telling those of us who can see through the cryptohypnocracy, that these elite, evil bastards will do whatever they desire because everyone else's eyelids are hypnotically sealed.
It's a wake up call for those of us who are awake.

EWS could also mean orgasm. AT that time, most people close their eyes, but they are open to being a conduit for sex magick.

But there's that scene where Bill commands Mandy to open her eyes and she has a hard time doing so. It in effect saves her life for the time being.

Edited by: Col Quisp at: 12/9/05 2:39 pm

Kubrick

Postby jamesredford » Fri Dec 09, 2005 11:10 pm

The reason most people dislike Eyes Wide Shut is because they don't understand what it is that Stanley Kubrick was depicting in the movie. To such people, this is just a bizarre and fanciful movie, with no concrete connection to reality. But Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut is hardly as fanciful as many would suspect, and is solidly grounded in real-world happenings. Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick's cinematic exposé of the very real activities of the ruling elite, their dark occult rituals, and their use of MK-Ultra-style mind control.

For more on that, read the below articles:

"Kubrick confounds the critics--and their critics--with a best-of-breed film. The trick is figuring out the breed." by Loen Weber, Metaphilm, May 17, 2003:

http://metaphilm.com/philm.php?id=108_0_2_0

"An Interpretation of Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut" by Adam Gorightly, The Konformist, May 2000:

http://www.konformist.com/flicks/eyeswideshut.htm

"Eyes Wide Shut: Occult Entertainment" by Uri Dowbenko, Steamshovel Press, 1999:

http://www.umsl.edu/~skthoma/offline7.htm

The above are not ordinary "reviews." I strongly recommend everyone read those three articles if they desire to know more about where Stanley Kubrick was coming from in his movie Eyes Wide Shut. The fist article documents the fact that Stanley Kubrick was a long-time subscriber to the Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr. quarterly publication Fidelio: Journal of Poetry, Science and Statecraft ( http://www.schillerinstitute.org/fid_97-01/fidelio.html ), that Kubrick even conversed with some of the magazine's writers, and that the password in Arthur Schnitzler's book Traumnovelle is "denmark" and not "fidelio."

Now on to my own analysis of the film: The title "Eyes Wide Shut" is a reference to the condition which almost all of humanity suffers under. It's a reference to a state of denial induced by congnitive dissonance. Moreover, it's a reference to this psychological state which has been intentionally propagated by a controlling power, both on an individual level and, more importantly, en masse. That is to say, the title is a reference to mind control--or more accurately, the condition of a controlled mind.

More concretely, it's a reference to the disparity between what people try to believe about the world just to be able to keep a sense of normalcy and make it through to the end of the day, as opposed to how the world actually is. That is, people don't want to believe that they are ruled over by an indescribably malignant power, the depths of which knows no boundary, so people willingly put on psychological blinders to keep their psyches untroubled by disturbing truths. This ruling elite makes it easy for people to take up said blinders with its control over the Prussian-model miseducation-indoctrination system, the de facto nationalized major media, and other vital command centers of society, such as with the law and with healthcare.

As Mr. Ziegler tells Dr. Harford:

"Who do you think those people were? Those were not ordinary people there. If I told you their names--I'm not going to tell you their names, but if I did, you might not sleep so well."

In other words, said people would be personages whose names any ordinary American would be familiar with, i.e., very high-level politicians, government officials, and billionaire families.

So at the end of the movie, Alice and William Harford choose to pass off their brush with the inner workings of the ruling elite as a dream, just to be able to keep a sense of normalcy in their lives and make it through to the end of the day. They have made the choice to keep their eyes wide shut.

Stanley Kubrick had, previous to Eyes Wide Shut, made films on occult themes, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, of which the screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. This movie was about the creation of mankind from primitive hominids by a super-advanced sapient race of beings, echoing the Sumerian recordings of the Anunnaki, as well as occult doctrines since that time. And it is now known that much of the source material for A Clockwork Orange was obtained by Anthony Burgess from British Intelligence and was based on MK-Ultra-type experiments.

Also, watch for the appearances of the All-Seeing Eye of Horus in Eyes Wide Shut.

""
Kubrick was so concerned about keeping the film secret he reportedly asked the projectionist to turn his back during the showing.

Very little is known about Eyes Wide Shut. Filming took 15 months under conditions of extreme secrecy.
""

(From "Eyes Wide Shut: The naked truth," BBC News, March 11, 1999 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/294814.stm .)

--

James Redford, jrredford@yahoo.com , http://www.geocities.com/vonchloride/an ... -jesus.pdf

Masks figure as an important symbol in many of Kubrick's films, but I suspect the inspiration for the look of the disguises in EWS, namely the tricorner hat and domino, come from the paintings of
Pietro Longhi

According to this site

Masks were allowed from the day of Santo Stefano, which marked the start of the Venetian carnival, to midnight of Shrove Tuesday which marked the end. "Later on, it was permitted to wear a mask from the 5th October up to the start of the Christmas novena (16th December)." Of course, the Christmas season is an important motif throughout EWS.

Milich

Postby Col Quisp » Sat Dec 10, 2005 12:17 am

I forgot one thing: Milich yells at the deviants, "Gentlemen, have you no sense of decency!" twice. The same words uttered in a rebuke of Joe McCarthy, the communist hater.

From Wiki:

Quote:
The Senate convened the Army-McCarthy Hearings into the matter, which was broadcast live and on television. In one memorable interchange, McCarthy revealed that the Army's attorney general, Joseph Welch, had hired a lawyer who had previously worked for a group supposedly linked to the Communist Party. (This revelation was explicitly in retaliation for Welch's combative questioning.) This led to Welch's famous rebuke: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" These proceedings have been recorded in the documentary film Point of Order! The Senate voted 67 to 22 on December 2, 1954, to condemn McCarthy for "conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute," the first time a Senator was censured for actions in a past session of Congress.

Also, the Verona Restaurant may be an allusion to the VENONA Project. Again from Wiki:

Quote:
Although McCarthy's activities did not result in any convictions or criminal prosecutions for espionage, intercepted Soviet communications from the now-declassified VENONA Project indicate that some of the individuals he pursued may have had hidden Communist associations.

The VENONA project was a long-running and highly secret collaboration between United States intelligence agencies and the United Kingdom's MI5 and GCHQ that involved the cryptanalysis of messages sent by several Soviet intelligence agencies. There were known to be at least 13 code words for this effort used by the US and UK. VENONA was the last code word for the project.

In the early years of the Cold War, VENONA would be an important source on Soviet intelligence activity for the Western powers. Although unknown to the public, it was a critical and guarded document behind many famous events of the early Cold War, such as the Rosenberg spying case.

Lots of VENONA code breakers were women!

By the way, "Domino" is a type of mask -- the basic Lone Ranger kind.

Here's a very good article on EWS (apologies if someone else already linked to it: www.visual-memory.co.uk/a.../0096.html in which this comment stood out (among many others!), referring to Helena's visit to the toy store:

Quote:
Another toy, conspicuously displayed under a red ring of lights, is called "The Magic Circle"; the name is an allusion to the ring of ritual prostitutes at the orgy, and the bright red color of the box recalls the carpet on which they genuflected to the high priest, as well as the felt of the pool table over which Bill made his own bargain with the devil.

On edit: I see that someone else already pointed out that Domino is a mask as I was typing this post. This thread is hard to keep up with!

Edited by: Col Quisp at: 12/9/05 9:20 pm

You make an interesting point about Verona/Venona, Col. Quisp! Also, of course, Verona is famous for being the setting of Romeo and Juliet, although I suspect it's possible that Kubrick may have also been making an allusion to another Shakespeare play, Two Gentlemen of Verona, which includes the famous Who is Silvia?:

Who is Silvia?
what is she,
That all our swains commend her?
Holy, fair, and wise is she;
The heaven such grace did lend her,
That she might admirèd be.

Is she kind as she is fair?
For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair,
To help him of his blindness,
And, being helped, inhabits there.

Then to Silvia let us sing,
That Silvia is excelling;
She excels each mortal thing
Upon the dull earth dwelling:
To her let us garlands bring."

(emphasis mine)

The eponymous two gentlemen of Shakespeare's play are Valentine and Proteus. (The mythical Proteus was able to foretell the future and change his shape, hence our word 'protean'. Many of EWS's characters seem rather protean to me!) TGOV is considered a minor play, although, like many Shakespeare plays (and EWS, come to think of it) it's full of disguises and sexual intrigue. One of its characters, Launce, is a symbol of fidelity, due to his affection for his dog, Crab.

Edited by: monstro at: 12/10/05 1:05 am
