Neil Young - Revolution Blues

Well - we live in a trailer
At the edge of town
You never see us
Cause we don't come around
We got twenty five rifles
Just to keep the population down

But we need you now
And that's why I'm hangin' round

So you be good to me and I'll be good to you
And in this land of conditions
I am not above suspicion
I won't attack you but
I won't back you

Well - it's so good to be here
Asleep on your lawn
Remember your guard dog
Well, I'm afraid that's gone
It was such a drag to hear him
Whining all night long

Yeah - that was me with the doves
Setting them free near the factory
Where you built your computer - love

I hope you get the connection
Cause i can't take the rejection
I won't deceive you
I just don't believe you

I'm a barrel of laughs
With my carbine on
I keep 'em hoppin'
Till my ammunition's gone
But I'm still not happy
I feel like something's wrong

I got the revolution blues
I see bloody fountains
And a ten million dune buggies
Comin' down the mountains

Well, I hear that laurel canyon
Is full of famous stars
But I hate them worse than lepers
And I'll kill them in their cars

New one is up. He has also expanded the series to twenty, and claims number sixteen is "coming very soon" while twenty is "coming this decade." Which means fairly soon unless he forgot that we're in 2009.

Somehow I missed your New on is up alert, and haven't read part XV yet.

All of them ultimately ended up living at Tork’s Laurel Canyon spread, which, as previously mentioned, featured a gaggle of young groupies who spent an inordinate amount of time lounging around the pool in various states of undress. -- part XVI

Say it ain't so!

Many of us teenyboppers had full page portraits of Peter Tork from 16 magazine up on our bedroom walls. He was sweet and innocent and gentle and funny. We though he was the one we could bring home and introduce to our mothers. His sexual persona seemed good for long walks holding hands on the beach at sunset, and not much naughtier. That sly dog!

I'm wondering, is there any website out there fact-checking (and assumption-checking) this whole Laurel Canyon series? Not that I'm getting any red flags, but I think it needs to be done.

I wonder about this, too.....
Of course, most people I've sent to this site say they don't have the time, nor the attention span to read the whole thing.......... I guess I would'nt either if I wasn't such a 'rock-music freak'.

I'm dubious about drawing too much from the military connection. Sure, they can look compelling, as they do for reporters whose fathers had mil connections, but from my experience knowing a lot of military brats who often had no idea what their fathers did until later I see that they have turned out anti-war, anti-empire, and generally fall on our side of the spectrum. Maybe a reaction taken in the other direction to their fathers or possibly the result of a lot of traveling. Certainly not true in every case and maybe it's just my selection of brat friends.

I do not think these things happen consciously in the way that most people think. The ‘Agencies’ may know of a general method, but it plays out in society without the need for much overt orchestration. Think about what it might be like if you were the child in a military family. You are always moving, never finding a home and always hearing the barking of orders every day. You then retreat into and develop your introspective world, in the hope perhaps of also changing the external world. It’s not surprising that authoritarian mindsets would produce anti-authoritarian progeny, even if they retain authoritarian presets or subroutines.

While the history presented by Dave McGowen is detailed and impressive, the implied assumptions should be questioned. One assumption seems to be that there is pervasive MK work being done on children of military families. Well, OK MK is done, but it is mostly a byproduct of living in an alien culture. No technology needed. And the organized MK that is done is still imitative and primitive. I mean they stare at goats to prove themselves, for fuck sake.
All these things will continue as long as coercion remains a central element of our mentality.

Yeah, either that or I'm becoming a coincidence theorist. God no, but the tables have been turned on me before.

In the book, Storming Heaven, it shows how the intel folks tagged behind and followed the original discoverers of LSD and psychedelic drugs. I tend to go with the hijacking angle partly because I don't want "My 60's" to be a fraud but also looking back, even with all the revelations, there was a natural grassroots revolution developing that I just can't connect to social engineering. And, the 60's were a global phenomena, from Japan to Germany with each manifestation being culturally different. The think tankers might have seen it coming, but to actually test tube it into reality is another thing.

I'm sure some in here are aware of the 'original' version of Don Mclean's American Pie, with the lyrics that relate to the Altamont killing and it's alleged ritual significance. (I will post these if you wish).

I am looking for a recording of Don actually singing this, to verify it is not invented. Also I want to use these lyrics when I sing this song and want to hear how he fits them.

[url=http://members.tripod.com/tiny_dancer/muppets.html]I turned on my TV some more
Where I’d learned so many years before
But the man said the Muppets couldn’t come out and play
And in the streets the children screamed
But I sat and lived his dreams
As long as I live his words are spoken
His world was always open
A part of me I’ll miss the most
The Count, Kermit and cookies on toast
His living became a legend
The day the Muppets cried...

Leaving out the bit that most of us are familiar with, here's the remaining verses:

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter,
The birds flew off with the fallout shelter, eight miles high and falling fast,
It landed foul on the grass,
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on sidelines in a cast.
Now the halftime air was sweet perfume,
While sergeants play a marching tune,
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance.
'Cause the players tried to take the field,
The marching band refused to yield,
Do you recall what was revealed
The day that music died?

Chorus

And there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space, with no time left to start again.
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick,
'Cause fire is the devil's only friend.
And as I watched him on the stage,
My hands were clenched in fists of rage,
No angel born in hell,
Could break that satan's spell,
And as the flames climbed high into the night,
To light the sacrificial light,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died.

Chorus

I met the girl who sang the blues,
And I asked her for some happy news, but she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store,
Where I'd heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn't play.
And in the streets the children screamed,
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed,
But not a word was spoken,
The church bells all were broken.
And three men I admire the most,
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast,
The day the music died.

Chorus

Still looking for a recording of Don singing it. Here's a couple of sites with interpretations of the lyrics:

Jakell, I think McLean has two versions of this song and in both of them the lyrics are the same. I don't know of a version with alternate lyrics.

Pretty amazing song, I don't think McLean ever did anything like it again.
