bringin' the woo

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

Ray Charles sings "Ring of Fire" on The Johnny Cash Show

One man's hell is another man's heaven. The take-away: It might at least be worth considering pussy as a possible conduit to eternal bliss. But, you know. Only if you like ecstatic spiritual transcendence.

Jocko Homo (original version) - Devo

I don't know about anyone else. But I hadn't seen this in so long that I might as well never have seen it, so utterly different is my understanding of the world now than it was then. Shine on, America!

Mickey Mouse: Runaway Brain

For Hugh, who probably knows it already, an Academy-Award-nominated short of Evil Mickey from 1995, with some arguable foreshadowing of 9/11, plus references to Pearl Harbor, issues of race, sex, mind control, and the power of whatever Mickey personifies (or mouse-ifies) to release and recall monstrous forces as if they were, collectively, merely a toy on a string, fully en suite.

It also oddly prefigures the first movie in the Spiderman franchise. And that is odd, since Spiderman was quite a bit later and at another studio.

Be that as it may.

"Counts of the Netherworld" (Bill Hicks)

A Channel 4 UK series in 1993 which Bill Hicks was working on before his untimely death in 1994.

These clips show the real potential of this series, which was sadly curtailed by his death. Good humor & strong thinking. I think if Bill lived, he would be a serious intellectual force nowadays. This shows him maturing, but keeping his sense of humor.

Manifesto:

Bill talks about the NRA, Guns, Dick Cheney and predicts the War on Terror in the Middle East & the war in South America, all in 1993:

I don't usually follow Ben Stein (or most mainstream crap) in general, but I'm looking forward to this.

It's all true.

When intelligent people used to talk thoughtfully on television in response to stupid questions:

Martin Luther King on Malcolm X

Malcolm X on Martin Luther King

Oh, hey. Where'd the thinking go?

Farrakhan on Malcolm X

Guess it got preempted for sex, death, and synthetic emotional catharsis. Shame about that.

Occupying the middle ground in '75, unlikely as it might seem, Geraldo Rivera:

"Good Night America," first broadcast of the Zapruder film

The Films of Paul Thomas Anderson

Whose genius is so literally awe-inspiring that it cannot adequately be described, merely noted. Plus, every one of his features is more Rig-Int than meets the eye at a casual glance.

I just hope that this skillfully edited tribute hasn't caused him to have a loss-of-artistic-control-induced seizure from which he might never fully recover. He shot his first two movies before he had even turned 27, IIRC, and I'd like to see him have as long a career as he's entitled to for that achievement alone.
