On March 31, 1968, I was at a Phil Ochs concert in Wilton, CT. It was near the middle of the set when someone came out on stage and handed him a piece of paper. He stopped the show to read aloud the announcement -- that Lyndon Johnson would not seek or accept the Democratic Party's nomination for re-election. Everybody went completely nuts. I remember him laughing, tossing the white scrap of paper into the air, and launching into, "I Ain't Marching Anymore."

That is a true story -- one of the best memories of my youth.

Here he is, immortalized, thanks to the wonderful people who upload these images. I'm overcome.

I Ain't Marching Anymore (1969)

At the Bitter End, West Village, NYC, doing There But For Fortune (1967)

Show me a country where the bombs had to fall
Show me the ruins of the buildings once so tall
And I'll show you a young land
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I
