Former general under Pinochet dies in apparent suicide days after sentencing

Hernan Ramirez Rurange died of a gunshot wound to the head at his Santiago home as he was set to begin his sentence over the 1995 murder of a chemist

Thursday 13 August 2015 16.04 EDT

A retired Chilean general has died in an apparent suicide days after a court sentenced him to 20 years in prison for planning the murder of a chemist who worked for former dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Hernan Ramirez Rurange, 76, was sentenced along with 13 other ex-army officers on Tuesday for planning the murder of Eugenio Berrios, whose body was found on a Uruguayan beach in 1995.

Berrios’ death was part of a scheme by Pinochet operatives to obstruct human rights investigations into the dictator’s 1973-1990 regime, according to the court.

The Chilean government said on Thursday that Ramirez Rurange died of a gunshot wound to the head at his home in an upscale Santiago neighborhood, but did not provide further details.

Local media reported that the former general killed himself. He was set to begin his sentence within days.

Berrios oversaw the production of sarin gas and other chemicals for Pinochet’s government, and long faced allegations that he helped poison a popular Chilean politician in 1982.

Some 25 years since Pinochet left power, human rights abuse cases dating from the dictatorship era are still moving through the Chilean courts or coming to light for the first time.

Ramirez Rurange’s death comes just days after Manuel Contreras, the head of Pinochet’s feared secret police, died of natural causes on 7 August, prompting celebrations in the capital.

Mind control survivor suicides the last two months:

Maggie Beam, aka Annie McKenna, activist, author of Paperclip Dolls, July 10.

Brianna Lea Pruett, singer, songwriter, poet, painter, September 2.

There's been a considerable crackdown this year, pressuring, accessing, and threatening of survivors. We are seeing its fruit in multiple places.

British journalist Jacky Sutton found dead in Istanbul airport

Friends call for investigation and express disbelief about reports that former BBC producer thought to be working for the IWPR appeared to have killed herself

Monday 19 October 2015 11.09 BST

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/oct/19/british-journalist-jacky-sutton-found-dead-in-istanbul-airport

A British woman, believed to be the acting Iraq director for the Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), has died in an Istanbul airport, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Former BBC journalist Jacky Sutton, 50, is understood to have been found dead in a toilet at the city’s main airport. The circumstances of her death are as yet unknown. Local media reported that it appeared that Sutton, who is believed to have been travelling to Irbil, northern Iraq had killed herself after missing a flight connection, a claim colleagues said was unlikely.

The Foreign Office said it was “providing consular assistance to the family at this time”.

It is understood that Sutton, who spoke five languages including basic Arabic, was the acting Iraq head of the London-based IWPR, which supports local journalism in countries affected by conflict and crisis. Its previous Iraq director, Ammar Al Shahbander was killed in a car bomb attack in Baghdad on 2 May and a memorial service was held for him in London last week, according to the IWPR website.

On Twitter friends and colleagues expressed their disbelief about reports in Turkish media that claimed Sutton had become distressed after missing a flight to Iraq, and did not have enough money for a new ticket.

Sudipto Mukerjee, a country director with the United Nations Development Programme, wrote: “Very difficult to believe that my colleague @undpiniraq staffer and seasoned traveler @JackySutton committed suicide.”

Iraqi journalist Mazin Elias, who had worked with Sutton, told MailOnline that it was “impossible” that she killed herself.

Elias said she was dedicated to developing freedom of expression in Iraq. “She continued in Iraq – everything was difficult, everything was a challenge, but she still continued,” he said. “But, what I’m sure about, the kind of person that Jacky was, it’s impossible she would have killed herself, impossible. She’s really looking for a better life for everyone. So kill herself? That’s crazy.”

Sutton was a “big manager” who was unlikely to have missed her flight, he added: “No, that’s impossible … we’re not talking about a girl. She’s a woman, an official woman, she’s a big manager.”

He alleged that Sutton may have been killed. “I’m really sad and sorry what happened, but if someone tells me ‘she killed herself’, I tell him: ‘No, that’s wrong, someone killed Jacky,’” he said.

The director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Australian National University, where Sutton was studying for a PhD focused on international development support to female media professionals in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2013, told the BBC the centre was “deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of one of its brilliant PhD students”.

Prof Amin Saika said: “She was not only an outstanding research scholar, but a highly valued friend and colleague who made remarkable contributions to the work and activities of the centre.”

Sutton had held various positions in humanitarian organisations and the UN as well as working as a producer for the BBC, according to her LinkedIn profile.

It was reported that she had arrived in Istanbul on Turkish Airlines flight TK-1986 at about 10pm local time on Saturday night, and was then due to fly to Irbil at about midnight, but missed her flight.

Susan Hutchinson, a colleague at the Australian National University, also said she did not believe Sutton took her own life, adding that the IWPR had recently “taken up work countering the anti-women messaging” of Islamic State.

She told the ABC: “I am unconvinced that she would have committed suicide … I am sceptical of the idea. I absolutely think that there needs to be a full investigation.

“I hope the Foreign Office has full access in order to be able to conduct a proper investigation about the circumstances in which Jacky died and I hope that that is done internationally and in a transparent and cooperative way.”

The International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA), an Australian-based agency focused on women’s rights and gender equality in the Asia Pacific region, paid tribute to Sutton on Twitter. It wrote:
“Today we grieve for Jacky Sutton, a close and courageous colleague who IWDA worked with through the women, peace and security movement. Jacky Sutton was a fearless advocate for women’s rights. Her passing brings home the risks women human rights defenders face every day. Today, we are angry and grieving for Jacky Sutton. Tomorrow we’ll be seeking answers and calling for urgent action.”

Russian Millionaire & Founder of RT Discovered Dead In Washington DC Hotel Room

Image

Washington DC – It was reported late on Friday that Mikhail Lesin, the former head of media affairs for the Russian government, and the founder of Russia Today (RT), was found dead in the hotel room that he was staying at in Washington DC.

Lesin, who is said to be a close associate to Russian President Putin, was staying at the Hotel Dupont when he passed away this week, and very few details about the case have been made public. According to ABC, the Metropolitan Police Department is now investigating his death, but his family was quick to say that the cause of death was a heart attack.

Lesin’s death comes at a time where he was surrounded in controversy, especially in the US. RT, the Russian-based news source that Lesin founded has become very controversial in the US for challenging the western narrative of foreign policy and privacy issues. Some US politicians have suggested that RT be banned in the US for “spreading propaganda,” while others have been blatant enough to attack Lesin personally.

Some US Senators, including Roger Wicker of Mississippi, recently called for the Department of Justice to open an investigation into Lesin’s finances.

Wicker was concerned that Lesin made too much money, something that was really none of his business.

“That a Russian public servant could have amassed the considerable funds required to acquire and maintain these assets in Europe and the United States raises serious questions,” Wicker said.

Lesin was 57 years old, an age where heart attacks happen, but not extremely often.

“The president has a high appreciation for Mikhail Lesin’s massive contribution to the creation of modern Russian mass media,” the Kremlin’s press service said on Saturday.

The Russian Embassy in the US put out the following statement:

“Our consular officials had an opportunity to confirm that the Russian national who passed away in DC is indeed Mikhail Lesin. Out of respect to the privacy and sensitivity of the matter we are not at liberty to disclose any other information, and would ask you to refer all further requests to his family and the law enforcement officials.”

Who Are Soraya And Jumana Salti? Prominent Jordanian Sisters Found Dead In Amman - November 08 2015

Updated Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 9:16 a.m. EST -- An investigation into the deaths of two prominent Jordanian sisters has ruled out foul play, Jordan's Public Security Department said Sunday after examining evidence and witness testimonies. A forensic report showed the cause of death of Soraya and Jumana Salti was severe multiple trauma consistent with falling from a great height and landing on a solid surface, according to the Jordan Times.

The sisters' bodies were found together at the base of a building under construction in the capital Amman on Friday, after an Egyptian janitor heard a loud thud of something hitting the ground. The janitor, who called the police, did not see another person within the vicinity.

Another witness, who lives in an apartment adjacent to the building, said she saw a vehicle stop near the site. A woman who "looked nervous" stepped out of the vehicle and rushed into the under-construction building. She was followed by another woman who also appeared to be in a hurry, Jordan's Public Security Department said.

Original story:

Jordanians are mourning the deaths of two prominent sisters whose bodies were discovered together at the base of a building in Amman over the weekend, according to local media reports. Soraya Salti, 44, was a successful entrepreneur who was named one of the 100 most powerful Arab women by Arabian Business in 2013, and Jumana Salti, 37, had been a director at PricewaterhouseCoopers in United Arab Emirates since 2008.

Family acquaintances said the Salti sisters were at the Bisharat Golf Club in a southern suburb of the capital Friday. Their bodies were later found at a nearby building by an Egyptian janitor after he heard a thud and called the police. The cause of their deaths is still under investigation, but a forensic autopsy Saturday showed the sisters suffered multiple fractures, according to the National newspaper in United Arab Emirates.

Some local media reported that the Salti sisters had committed suicide together by jumping off the building in Jwiedeh, while many Jordanians -- including family and friends -- suspected murder.

“I find it difficult to believe that they have committed suicide,” Marwan Muasher, a former foreign minister and former deputy prime minister of Jordan, wrote on his Facebook page in Arabic on Saturday. “I knew both and they were full of life and loved life. I was Jumana’s basketball coach when she was 8.”

Jordanian journalist Raed Omari said the sisters never had shown symptoms of depression, citing a friend of the Salti family. “Their case is so far vague and mysterious,” he told Al Arabiya News Sunday.

The Salti sisters came from a prominent Jordanian family and were well-known for their success in entrepreneurship and business. Soraya Salti, a mother of one, was the founder of Injaz Al-Arab, an education initiative that aims to empower youth and promote entrepreneurship across the Arab world. She won the Schwab Social Entrepreneur award for Jordan in 2006 and was named a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum. In 2009, she became the first Arab woman to win the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, the National said.

A post on the Facebook page of Injaz Al-Arab said the nonprofit organization is “devastated” by Soraya’s death. “She will be remembered as a dreamer that dared to create new opportunities for Arab youth across the region,” the post read.

Her sister, Jumana, was part of the government and public sector strategy team at PricewaterhouseCoopers. She earned a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2006. She had previously worked at the Jordanian Royal Court on economic and socio-econonomic issues for four years. The two women were also American citizens through their mother, Rebecca Salti.

“Jordan, and indeed the Arab world, has lost … two leaders. They will be sorely missed and eternally remembered. What a heavy loss,” prominent Jordanian blogger Naseem Tarawnah wrote Saturday.

Chile reopens Pablo Neruda death investigation to test for poisoning

Nobel-winning poet’s body to be retested for evidence that might support claims his death in 1973 was a Pinochet-ordered murder

Image

Wednesday 21 January 2015 16.25 EST

Chile will reopen an investigation into the death of Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda to determine if the poet was poisoned more than 40 years ago by a military dictatorship, after tests on his exhumed body in 2013 found no evidence to support the claims.

Neruda, famed for his passionate love poems and staunch communist views, is presumed to have died from prostate cancer just days after the US-backed coup on 11 September 1973 that ushered in the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

“There is initial evidence that he was poisoned and in that sense the signs point to the intervention of specific agents … that could constitute a crime against humanity,” Francisco Ugas, the head of the government’s humans rights department, said on Wednesday.

The poet’s chauffeur has said Pinochet’s agents took advantage of Neruda’s illness to inject poison into his stomach while he was bedridden at the Santa Maria clinic in Santiago.

One theory on why he was poisoned is because he was a communist and loyal to the deposed president, Salvador Allende, and it was feared he would become an opposition leader to the dictatorship.

The new forensic testing will look for inorganic or heavy metals in Neruda’s remains to try to determine a direct or indirect cause of death.

It will focus on detecting if there is any cellular or protein damage caused by chemical agents, whereas the prior testing looked specifically for the remains of poison.

Chile’s best-known poet, Neruda achieved critical acclaim with the publication in 1924 of Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair at the age of 19. He wrote prolifically throughout his life, and also became a political activist, even running for president at one point, before dropping his bid to throw his support behind Allende.

Neruda organised a ship to bring about 2,000 refugees fleeing the Spanish civil war to Chile in 1939 and was ambassador to France during Allende’s presidency.

He won the Nobel prize for literature in 1971 “for a poetry that with the action of an elemental force brings alive a continent’s destiny and dreams”.

The Battle of Chile

Now:

After more than 40 years of denials, Chile admits poet Pablo Neruda may have been murdered

In 2011, the Chilean government started investigating the possibility Neruda might not have died of cancer after his driver, Manuel Araya Osorio, told a Mexican magazine he was with the writer when Neruda called his wife to say he believed Pinochet ordered a doctor to poison him. In 2013, Neruda’s body was exhumed for forensic analysis.

Which brings us to today. Last week, Spanish newspaper El Pais added a new wrinkle to the case when it published a document from the Chilean interior ministry from earlier this year that states “it is clearly possible and highly probable” that Neruda’s death “was caused by a third-party intervention.”

Accident:
White House, Media Silent One Year After Murder of US Reporter Who Exposed Western Links to ISIS
2015-11-04T12:55:05+00:00

One year ago, October 19, American reporter Serena Shim was killed in Turkey while reporting on the heavy battles in the Syrian border city of Kobani. Serena Shim was investigating the thousands of foreign fighters that have crossed the Turkish border to fight in the Syrian proxy war and in the process uncovered evidence of secret western assistance to the Islamic State. It is not known what date the footage recorded or what happened to it as all of her property was seized, including her passport and wedding ring which were never returned by Turkish authorities.

Serena Shim was going return to Lebanon for her son’s birthday and had intended to retire to be with her family. Shim’s immediate family includes her husband and two young children as well as her parents and two sisters.

Shim and her cousin Judy Irish were reported to be hit by a truck after turning into the opposite lane on a highway access road, however Shim’s family has personal knowledge that the accident was manipulated by the Turkish government. The family notes that the government first stated they could not find the vehicle that hit Shim’s rental car. Later the government claimed it was a cement truck and produced pictures.

Shim and Irish were taken to two different hospitals separated by more than 25 miles after the alleged accident. Shim was first reported dead at the scene but eventually was said to die of heart failure after a heart attack almost an hour later. Her family suspects she was taken to a secret military facility nearby before going to the hospital.

Turkey has been accused of aiding the Islamic State by facilitating the travel of thousands of mercenaries to the Syrian border, as well as medical care in many publications.

Image

Multiple important diplomatic and military events were happening at the time, including weapons airdrops to Syrian Kurds against the wishes of the Turkish government. One of the weapons caches was later confirmed to be intercepted by Islamic State in a Youtube video, receiving international media attention.

Despite the fact that Shim was an American citizen and was killed after the American media focus on other reporters being beheaded, US President Barack Obama has never commented on her death. The State Department dismissed questions about whether the US government would investigate, as WTF News reported.

Not a single major American media organization reported on her death.

Two days before her death, Shim had reported on live television that she was under investigation by the Turkish intelligence service MIT for being a spy based on her reports on the war. According to her live report on PressTV, Millî İstihbarat Teşkilatı, MİT, had been looking for Shim in border regions of Suruç and instructed residents to alert them if they saw Shim in the area. She also noted that her reporting specifically in the area of Hatay where many fighters travel into Northwest Syria. This area was featured in a November 2013 report by CNN describing the flow of foreign fighters.

In the days before her death, Serena Shim had been reporting on the siege in Kobani where the Syrian Kurds and the remaining Syrian military forces were fighting Islamic State terrorists. The Turkish government was aware of her presence in Turkey and Syria, however Serena Shim was a skilled undercover reporter who could travel without being noticed.

This period of the Kobani battle, October 12-19 was the most intense fighting to date as ISIS forces including tanks were entrenched in the city after completely surrounding it over the past 3 weeks. The fighting in Syria caused increased tension between the US and Turkey as it moved closer to the border. The United States and Turkish governments were publicly arguing about how to combat the Islamic State advance since the October 2nd comments made by US Vice President Joe Biden blaming Turkey for the growth of ISIS.

Biden responded to a student question at a Harvard University event saying “President Erdogan told me, he’s an old friend, ‘you were right, we let too many people through’ [the border]” referring to foreign mercenaries fighting in Syria. This was the extension of a US intelligence decision exposed by leaked reports, which predicted that an Islamic State caliphate would form based on the flow of weapons and money to terrorists, including weapons from Libya linked to the Benghazi scandal.

Serena Shim had also done an undercover report in 2012 on the rebels using refugee camps inside Turkey as a home base for attacks inside Syria and that Al Qaeda terrorist groups were controlling border crossings.

After Shim reported that Turkish intelligence was looking for her on October 17, the Kobani battle got worse and important geopolitical developments emerged. President Erdogan and Turkish officials rejected the United States plan to supply weapons and other equipment to Syrian Kurds fighting across the border to defend Kobani, despite the city being less than one mile from the Turkish border. The Turkish were also against a plan to allow Iraqi Kurdish fighters to assist by crossing through Turkey to reach the battle area of Kobani. Turkey has refused to help Kurdish fighters in any way despite proving to be the only effective fighting force against the Islamic State.

On October 19th, the US-Turkey dynamic changed as the US military dropped weapons and supplies to Syrian Kurds in Kobani against the wishes of the Turkish government. As the new week started, news spread of the video showing Islamic State terrorists intercepting a US airdrop which was “mistakenly” off course. US officials also reported destroying another drop before ISIS could reach it.

Turkish officials announced the decision to allow Iraqi Kurds to aid the fight on October 20 President Erdogan. Erdogan continued to publicly express displeasure at the US strategy that week. The combined Kurdish forces eventually took control of the city in October and November and forcing the Islamic State to retreat completely by February 2015.

The specific reason for being targeted by the Turkish government is not known but what is certain is that Shim’s death is the result of an attempt to expose the secrets of a dirty war. The Syrian proxy war has also been used to manipulate political opinion in the United States.

Serena Shim’s reporting focused on two of the most important areas of the Syrian war. Her reporting near the city of Hatay and the Syrian border at Reyhanli captured proof of Islamic State terrorists using United Nations World Food Program vehicles for a convoy. The area of Hatay is also known for oil smuggling which ISIS frequently used to fund operations. It is a critical point of control from the border to the Syrian city of Aleppo, which has been fought over since the start of the war.

Image

Shim’s reporting in Kobani may also be linked to the reports of secret Turkish military bases near Kobani and Sanliurfa, Turkey. The state run hospital in Sanliurfa has continuously treated Islamic State fighters and other combatants throughout the conflict. The nearby border crossing of Akcakale to the east of Kobani has changed hands multiple times since September 2012 when the Syrian “rebels” captured it and that was a “good” thing. ...

Suicide:
Image
Another 9/11-related ‘suicide’
Posted on November 9, 2015 by Wayne Madsen

Although former Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Coleman had primary responsibility at the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Manhattan for white collar crime, especially that committed within the concrete canyons of Wall Street, his tenure in New York would have placed him front and center in the Justice Department’s investigation of suspicious stock “puts” on the stocks of United and American Airlines before the 9/11 attack.

Coleman was the Justice Department’s “go to” prosecutor for white collar crimes. As the Assistant U.S. Attorney in Manhattan from 1997 to 2005, Coleman prosecuted major white collar crimes cases including Adelphia Communications and Vivendi Universal.

While serving as counsel and senior counsel to the Deputy Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the Justice Department, Coleman oversaw the work of the Enron Task Force and the Criminal Fraud Section, which prosecuted Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations; stock fraud; procurement fraud, such as that involving U.S. contractors in Iraq; and a wide range of other cases, any one of which, alone, would have created enemies for the federal prosecutor. While in Manhattan and Main Justice, Coleman worked alongside current FBI director James Comey who was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Manhattan followed by Deputy Attorney General.

After leaving Justice, Coleman practiced law for Dewey & LeBoeuf and, most recently the London-based law firm of Freshfields, Bruckhaus, and Deringer. Coleman reportedly excelled in investigating “complex multijurisdictional” cases in Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia.”

Coleman would be the most unlikely person to throw himself out of the window of his 10th floor Freshfields law office at 700 13th Street, NW, in Washington, DC. Yet, at 8:15 am on the morning of November 3, people heading to work in Washington saw a man plunge to his death from the 13th Street building next to a Metro Center elevator and across the street from Macy’s. Police claim that Coleman committed suicide in yet another suspicious defenestration, an act that has plagued Washington, especially since 9/11. Without even so much as a preliminary autopsy, DC Metropolitan police concluded that Coleman committed suicide by jumping from the building.

Former CIA official Gus Weiss, State Department intelligence officer John Kokal, and Air Force veteran Stephanie Huebner all met their deaths after supposedly jumping from DC buildings. Congressman Paul Gillmor (R-OH), ranking Republican on the House Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee, is said to have fallen down the stairs at his Alexandria, Virginia townhouse and died from blunt force trauma to his neck and head due to the “accidental” fall. Gillmor was investigating the sub-prime mortgage scandal at the time of his death.

Within a two week period from April to May 2009, there were two high profile attorney deaths in the DC area.

The CIA’s assassination manual, released in the 1980s, favors falls from the tops of tall structures, as the optimum method to dispatch someone and then call it a suicide or accident. The manual states, “The most efficient accident, in simple assassination, is a fall of 75 feet or more onto a hard surface. Elevator shafts, stair wells, unscreened windows and bridges will serve.” On April 30, 2009, former Justice Department attorney Mark Levy, a partner with the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton, is said to have shot himself in his office on the 11th floor of 607 14th Street, just across the street from the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Levy was a Yale Law classmate and friend of Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito. David Kellermann, Chief Financial Officer of Freddie Mac, was reported to have hanged himself at his Vienna, Vriginia home on April 22. Earlier in April, Freddie Mac arranged to have a private security guard posted at Kellermann’s home.

Coleman’s suspicious defenestration will be just another suicide statistic in the nation’s capital. However, like the others of a similar nature, there is more to this story.

Coleman's Twitter messages kept followers informed about major white collar criminal cases.

Paul Walker’s Death Was His “Fault” Replies Porsche To Daughter’s Lawsuit

The luxury car manufacturer claims that the November 30, 2013 crash that killed Fast & Furious star Paul Walker was his “own comparative fault.” Seeking to have the wrongful death lawsuit that the actor’s teenage daughter filed in late September tossed, Porsche said late last week that the 2005 Porsche Carrera CT Walker and driver Roger Rodas were in had been “abused and altered” as well as “misused and improperly maintained.”

The company formally contends in their 7-page filing (read it here) that such changes contributed to Walker’s death in a fiery crash that Thanksgiving break. That’s in direct contradiction to the jury seeking complaint that Meadow Rain Walker and her guardian Brandon Birtell filed in L.A. Superior Court on September 28. The teen’s lawyers allege that Walker was killed because the car lacked the necessary electronic stability control system and he was trapped in the burning vehicle by a “defective” seat belt, among other causes. In their response on November 12, the Volkswagen-owned Porsche also says that the seasoned driver of the blockbuster car movies knew the car could be dangerous.

“PCNA alleges that Mr. Walker knowingly and voluntarily assumed all risk, perils and danger in respect to the use of the subject 2005 Carrera GT, that the perils, risk and danger were open and obvious and known to him, and that he chose to conduct himself in a manner so as to expose himself to such perils, dangers and risks, thus assuming all the risks involved in using the vehicle,” Porsche adds. “Mr. Walker’s voluntary assumption of the risk should bar the plaintiff’s recovery or, in the alternative, should reduce the plaintiff’s right to recovery from PCNA in an amount equivalent to Mr. Walker’s fault.”

There might also be other contested issues to be addressed if the lawsuit survives Porsche’s attempt at summary judgment. The younger Walker’s unspecified damages seeking lawsuit also says that the Carrera CT was traveling between “63 to 71 mph” when the fatal crash in Santa Clarita occurred. That’s far less than the 80 to around 93 mph that the police in their report said the vehicle was going when the accident occurred.

Lawyers from Newport Beach firm Lee, Hong, Degerman, Kang & Waimey as well as Richmond, Virginia’s Spencer Shuford LLP are representing Porsche in the legal action. One of the company’s in-house attorney Jeffrey W. Gates is also involved. Jeffery Milam of Pasadena and Roger Garrett, Ryan Squire, Jennifer Slater and Edward Racek of Garrett & Tully are representing the younger Walker and the actor’s estate in the case.

I recently remembered to check and see if there were any updates on this. Nothing new, just this from a few days later:

http://www.jordantimes.com/news/local/a ... s%E2%80%99

Soraya Salti, one of the two sisters who were found dead after falling off a roof of an under-construction building in south Amman earlier this month, left a note addressed to her mother, police said Saturday.

In the note, Soraya asked her mother to tell her 11-year-old daughter Raya that she loved her so much and that she will be her guardian angel.

“I love you so much…This is so much bigger than us,” she added in the note, which the authorities revealed at a press conference.

Experts and Soraya’s father identified the handwriting in the note as belonging to her, Criminal Investigation Department Director Brig. Gen. Qasim Al Ibrahim told reporters.

He said the investigation revealed that the two sisters suffered from psychological problems.

Soraya suffered from a psychological disorder that could lead to suicidal tendencies and tests revealed she was on anti-depressants, according to experts at the press conference.

The investigation also revealed that some pills were found in Soraya’s pockets.

Also:

Soraya headed Injaz Al Arab, an education initiative that promoted entrepreneurship across the Arab world. Jumana was a director at PricewaterhouseCoopers based in Dubai since 2008.

Police have already declared that the deaths were a double suicide. But the tragedy has sent shock waves through the country and sparked rampant speculation that the sisters were murdered.

Police insisted on Saturday that there was no foul play and released fresh details about the case to end the rumours, mostly circulating on social media.

In the letter, Soraya mentioned photos on both of her computers that she was trying to put on a USB storage device. According to the police forensic lab, the handwriting matched that of Soraya.

Broward Health CEO found dead in apparent suicide

By Aurora Aguilar | January 24, 2016

Dr. Nabil El Sanadi, president and CEO of Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale. Fla., shot and killed himself Saturday.

Broward Health Board Chairman David DiPietro confirmed the death late Saturday to the Sun Sentinel.

El Sanadi was also the system's chief of emergency medicine.

El Sanadi, an Egyptian immigrant, was appointed in December 2014. He was considered forward-thinking by many of his colleagues and in Oct. wrote a commentary for Modern Healthcare that offered insight into a system's decision to invest in telemedicine or brick and mortar facilities.

"We are deeply saddened by this devastating loss and our prayers go out to his family at this time," said a written release from Broward Health.

“Florida's safety net hospitals are deeply saddened today by the news of Dr. Nabil El Sanadi's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues and the countless patients whose lives he touched and made better. Dr. El Sanadi was an active and collegial member of the safety net hospital alliance board and both his contributions and his friendship will be missed,” said Tony Carvalho, president of the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida, in a written release.

In September, Broward Health was part of a record $69 million settlement with the federal government to settle allegations that it illegally paid nine doctors for referrals.

A whistle-blower alleged the hospital violated the Stark law, governing physician financial relationships, by paying employed doctors at levels beyond the fair market value based, in part, on their referrals to Broward Health hospitals and clinics. That, in turn, led to the submission of false claims to the government, in violation of the False Claims Act, the whistle-blower alleged.

Broward Health reported operating revenue of $971 million in 2014, according to Modern Healthcare's financial database.

The Best Broward Health CEO contract politics can buy!

Posted on April 5, 2015 by Dan Lewis

There is little doubt that Dr. Nabil El Sanadi is as ambitious as any Wall Street wolf. Taking the political route for career advancement, it is believed that Dr. Nabil El Sanadi and his wife Lori have given tens of thousands of dollars in contributions to secure his very lucrative political appointments as “Medical Director” to Broward Sheriff’s Office, the City of Sunrise, the City of Tamarac and the City of Fort Lauderdale as Medical Director[i] and appointment to the State of Florida Medical Board where he serves as its current chair. It has been estimated that these contracts pay Dr. El Sanadi over $300,000.00 in additional taxpayer funds while he receives his $675,000.00 (plus benefits) Broward Health “full-time” CEO pay. It is noteworthy that the wife of David Di Pietro who is currently under consideration for a gubernatorial judicial appointment in Broward was also previously appointed to the Florida Medical Board in September 2012 and serves closely with Dr. El Sanadi prior to his CEO appointment. This reputed close relationship between the Di Pietro’s and El Sanadi continues through today. Recall that David Di Pietro is the current chair of Broward Health and the alleged puppeteer behind El Sanadi’s CEO appointment as well as one of Governor Scott’s political fundraisers. Coincidence?

Based on public political contribution records, here’s how generous Dr. El Sanadi has been to his republican benefactors

[...]

Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Republican Party of Florida. Rinse, repeat.

It is also widely believed that David Di Pietro not only force the resignation of Frank Nask, Broward Health’s previous CEO, but also through his fund raising relationship with the Governor, packed the Broward Health board with political appointees and created a sham CEO search process to guarantee El Sanadi’s appointment as CEO of Broward Health. What is unknown is the extent that Governor Scott played in El Sanadi’s selection as CEO and if so, what if anything was offered as a quid pro quo.

What is curious is that the script that the Governor used to unilaterally replace the state director of corrections in 2014 that drew so much public fire and the script Di Pietro used to appoint El Sanadi are remarkable similar. See the Sun-Sentinel Editorial here. (I’m reminded that just because you are paranoid, it doesn’t mean you are wrong!)

This story continues with the contract negotiation between Broward Health and Dr. El Sanadi. The negotiation responsibility fell to Di Pietro’s Board confidant and fellow political appointment David Nieland or as he is affectionately called “Country”. You will recall that David Nieland was the Homeland investigator who implicated the Obama White House intern in the Secret Service prostitute scandal thereby becoming a darling of the Republican Party. Allegedly,Nieland was also later implicated in his own prostitute scandal right here in Broward when he was ensnared in a BSO sting operation as a “John”. Reportedly, Nieland said he was “undercover” in an “investigation” that later turned out not to be true and the matter was dropped through the efforts of political insiders. Mayo: Should hospital commissioner step down after prostitution reports?, Washington Post: Investigator of Secret Service prostitution scandal also linked to prostitution, NY Post: Investigator for Secret Service hjooker scandal quits after paying for sex
The new way of thinking is precisely delineated by what it is not.

Thing is we can't ever REALLY know what happened. ..
As an aside, interesting the comments say, someone was momentarily confused and thought BLM, land management. ..

It is unbelievable they have no cameras at the front entrance to the Ohio State House. I suppose it is possible he may have become overwhelmed by his sudden "fame" and taken his own life, that they have no camera coverage leads me to believing he didn't.

Why is it so hard for me to believe that someone who believes so strongly that black lives matter that he joins Black Lives Matter only to show the world black lives really don't matter as he kills himself on the state capitol steps where it just so happens there are no cameras, no witnesses, not to mention the all too familiar message left on Facebook/Twitter where his last words were that he pissed on the stairs.

Sorry, that doesn't sound like a kid who said, prior to his involvement with BLM, according to a 2014 interview on the blog 614 Columbus, "I realized an important thing: I don't need anything to be happy. I mean, it changed everything; I had to be broken to see what genuine happiness is." McCarrel had been homeless in Ohio for three months shortly after graduating from high school. Mr. McCarrel also founded youth mentorship program Pursuing Our Dreams, which launched Feed the Streets, a project to help Ohio's homeless

If nothing else, it's a good way to start a black-lives-don't-matter meme on social media.

Why was he killed? Brutal death of Italian student in Egypt confounds experts

Giulio Regeni was burned, beaten and mutilated in a murder that bears all the hallmarks of Egypt’s security forces. But a month after he was last seen alive, speculation as to why he was targeted remains just that

Giulio Regeni, a 28-year-old Cambridge PhD student from Italy, was on his way to see a friend when he left his flat near Behoos metro station in Cairo on 25 January.

It was a tense day in the otherwise bustling neighbourhood on the western bank of the Nile, where street sellers hawk cheap plastic sunglasses, books and shoes from groaning tables.

That day marked the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Egyptian revolution which overthrew Hosni Mubarak, and tension was palpable across the city after weeks of intense police activity aimed at scuppering any pro-democracy demonstrations.

It was also the last day Regeni was seen alive.

Nine days later – and days after the Italian foreign ministry announced that it was concerned about his mysterious disappearance – Regeni’s body was found in a ditch near a desert highway between Cairo and Alexandria. An examination of his body in Rome concluded that he was tortured before his death: he was burned, beaten, and mutilated. His nails had been ripped out and he suffered from broken ribs and a brain haemorrhage.

For experts who study Egypt and its infamous record on human rights, Regeni’s murder bears all the hallmarks of an extrajudicial killing by the state’s security police, who are believed to be behind the death of 474 Egyptians in 2015 alone.

But Regeni’s case stands out amid the catalogue of horrors: his murder is the first time such an act has happened to a foreign academic researcher working in Cairo, the kind of person who could have expected to be harassed or even deported for his work, but who would have been considered physically “protected” by his passport.

Senior officials in Italy have not directly pointed a finger of blame at Egypt. Nor have they shied away from the suggestion that the Egyptian state needs to answer for the crime.

Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, has said Italy would not settle for “a convenient truth”. “Because we are friends [with Egypt] we want those really responsible, their names and surnames. If someone thinks that in the name of political correctness we can settle for a patchy truth, we are Italy … the truth for Giulio is not an option or a luxury,” he said.

It is a demand that has also been made by Paolo Gentiloni, the foreign minister, who has called for “full and total collaboration on the part of the Egyptian authorities” in the investigation. Italy has sent its own team of investigators to work on the case, but there are indications that their access has been limited, including the fact that Italians were not present at the original autopsy in Cairo.

In Italy, newspaper reports speculate about why Regeni was killed, including theories that have examined the sensitive research he was conducting into labour unions in Egypt, the contacts he was making, and even the journalism he did on the side – using a pseudonym – for a communist newspaper in Italy called Il Manifesto that was critical of the Egyptian government.

His family has categorically denied the suggestion in Italian press reports that Regeni may have worked for Italian intelligence.

Experts remain confounded by the circumstances of his death. Was it the result of a bizarre and careless mistake of a lowly henchman? Was Regeni caught up in a roundup of people who were considered generally suspicious? Or was he specifically targeted? And if so, why?

Raffaele Marchetti, professor of international relations at Luiss University in Rome, said the details that have emerged so far point obviously to the involvement of intelligence or security services, but that it was difficult to understand why an Italian citizen would be targeted, given the uproar it would obviously cause.

It pointed to a “blatant mistake” or even possible fractures within the security services under the Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, who was swept into power following the 2013 coup that ousted the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi, the country’s democratically elected president.

Marina Calculli, a Fulbright scholar at the George Washington University who has worked as a researcher in Egypt and Syria, said that whether the murder was carried out by the Egyptian regime or not, the government was still culpable “because this could not happen in a context when you do not every day have extrajudicial killings”.

“The case of Giulio is strange because he was [apparently] in detention for days,” Calculli said. “It could be that somehow he was taken and detained and tortured in this kind of anti-foreigner, anti-researcher hysteria and perhaps they crossed a line and could not come back.

“You cannot just release a foreigner that has been tortured, because you are exposing to the world what you are doing inside your prisons.”

The case has become a diplomatic problem between two countries with deep economic, business, and defence ties. But there is no evidence that – beyond some rhetoric – Italy is prepared to put real pressure on Egypt.

Image

Regeni’s body was found as Italy’s economic development minister, Federica Guidi, was in Cairo with a delegation of Italian business leaders, including the heads of Italian energy companies. The delegation was abruptly cut short after Regeni was found.

The most important business relationship centres on Italy’s state-backed energy group Eni, which last year announced the discovery of a giant natural gas field in Egypt. Eni has announced a development plan for the site, boasting that the deal would help satisfy Egypt’s natural gas demand for decades.

Perhaps more importantly, Italy would rely on Egypt’s political support in the event of a possible military intervention in Libya.

People inside the Egyptian foreign ministry who spoke on condition of anonymity nevertheless described the Italians as “out for blood … they want someone specific named and shamed”.

In Italy, questions about what happened have focused on why Regeni may have been seen as a threat. By all accounts, he was a gifted young man. He spoke five languages – Italian, English, Spanish, Arabic, and German – and was considered a fine writer and hard worker.

“His interests were wide: he was as much an expert on the Middle East as he was on Latin America. On the human level, he was warm, respectful, generous and kind. His abilities for communication made him a natural diplomat, a builder of bridges between cultures,” said his friend Paz Zarate. “I always thought his destiny was to be a well-known figure who would made his country proud.”

On the day that he went missing, he was reportedly on his way to meet a friend named Gennaro Gervasio, a lecturer in the department of political science at the British University in Cairo (BUE), at a restaurant near Tahrir Square. Gervasio declined to speak to the Guardian.

“Someone like him, speaking Arabic and talking about issues like this raises eyebrows – not that it should,” said lawyer Ragia Omran, of the Egyptian National Council for Human Rights. “It’s this xenophobic atmosphere we’re living in. It’s horrible that people who come to visit get treated this way,” she added, referring to a growing climate of suspicion around foreign visitors in Egypt, often resulting in accusations of spying or stirring up anti-government sentiment.

A source at the American University in Cairo named three people who have studied labour relations in Egypt – a sensitive topic – and were subsequently detained, deported or barred from re-entering the country since 2011.

Activists last week hanged a banner on the AUC campus. It said: “Giulio’s murder is not an isolated incident. The AUC bubble will not protect you.”

According to the Giza public prosecutor’s office, the investigation into Regeni’s whereabouts began on 27 January, but according to Hossam El Nassar, assistant to the Giza public prosecutor’s office, Regeni’s apartment was not searched until about five days after his body was discovered.

The Egyptian investigation has so far been limited to questioning Regeni’s friends, in at least one case without the presence of a lawyer.

“The investigation leads to several possibilities including criminal activity or the desire for revenge due to personal reasons, especially as the Italian had many relationships with people near where he lives and where he studied,” the interior ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Giza public prosecutor Ahmed Nagy had earlier said the inquiry would focus on people Regeni knew in Egypt. “The investigations are still trying to find who he was dealing with while he was here, who his friends were while he was here, if he had personal problems with anyone, who he was last in contact with and who he last met with,” Nagy said.

Such investigations into Regeni’s life and personal relations have added to speculation that his contact with activists involved in the labour movement made him a target, and have also added to pressure on his close friends to avoid talking to the media, likely fearing for their own safety.

The ministry statement made no mention of the involvement of security forces as a possibility, and both Nagy and Nassar made clear that neither policemen nor security officials will likely be questioned as suspects in connection with Regeni’s disappearance and murder.

“Statements from the policemen and the security forces are going to happen, but it’s still not in that stage yet,” Nagy said. While he said the investigation was following leads from Regeni’s friends, “there is no set date as to when the next stage starts”.

“The questioning of any policemen will not be as suspects, but of their knowledge and enquiries about Regeni’s case,” said Nassar. He declined to comment on whether Regeni had been under surveillance prior to his death.

It is expected that the Egyptian security service will itself be tasked with drawing up a list of suspects, making it even less likely that a policemen or security official will even be questioned in the case.

“The security services are the ones who will say who did it,” said vice-minister of justice and forensics expert Shaaban el Shamy. “We send our reports to the investigators, the investigators work through the security apparatus and their investigations determine who did it. What we do is provide the technical evidence in the case.”

Shamy, like other officials, declined to respond directly to reports that Regeni was tortured.

“Homicide is different to other crimes – a thief has a certain way of stealing for example. There’s a thousand different ways to kill someone,” Shamy said, adding that the nature of the injuries will not be used to determine who could have committed the crime. “Some of the injuries sustained could show the nature of the crime but could never show who did it,” he said.

Civil society groups hold little hope that a fair investigation will be carried out. “[The case] will be investigated but it’s highly unlikely that the government will prosecute one of their own,” said Hussein Baoumi, of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms.
