I wouldn't want this to turn into a live leak cam-monitoring thread like they've got under well under control over at GLP (as only GLP can do!) but it looks to me like there is a lot more oil spewing out now than before. There's also a substantial (lighter-colored) jet coming from that improvised-looking black tube resting above the riser. Or is it actually spraying out another substance?? Can someone explain what that piece is supposed to be? Isn't that supposed to be the smaller 4-inch tube that was to siphon away some of the oil. I'm going to guess that that's just not working anymore.

And the view is getting cloudier again...

Added on edit: that smaller black tube (mentioned above) is spewing out a whitish substance and looks like it is part of a robotic arm hosing at the leak.

I believe that is the Corexit 9500A and Corexit 9527A dispersants BP has been told to stop using and switch to less toxic and more effective ones.

I've not seen any updates on Wayne Madsen's May 19th report of a massive frozen oil blob heading for the gulf stream, and monitored by US subs. Anyone else?

Corexit - yeah, probably that.

Cam update (damn it, I'm GLP-ing): looks like I missed something when I stepped away for a few minutes...the camera is now covered with oil splotches, as if from an explosion. The leak is also looking much, much more unruly now, like Hiroshima....

Barataria Bay is getting close to some relatives of mine. Its coming in.

Latest scoop here is there is an emergency meeting going on. All the Parish Presidents are meeting w/Bobby Jindal. Meeting starts at 2:30 (a few min.)

Jefferson Parish has the means and the power to do what is in its interests. We're the most developed area. Lots of people in positions of power.
They have taken BP assets over as they were not being deployed as the oil came in. Jefferson has also ALREADY begun the (un)authorized dredging and sand barrier making.

The meeting going on now is to develop a plan independent of any Fed or BP response.

I hope a lot of other communities follow suit. Screw waiting for BP and the Feds to do anything.

Funny comment by a caller. "Its like the battle of New Orleans/1812. The British (BP) are invading our shores."
Caller is a fisherman, talking about how this is going to bankrupt everyone he knows. Fishing area will be gone for years.

The Army Corp. is getting some serious wrath.

Right winger calling in bitching about the government not being more involved. "He can push 'Obamacare', but he can do anything about the marsh?!"
These are the people who want government to 'get out of the way of business'.
The stupid-it burns.

Is anyone looking at the risks of the oil catching fire? What if storms "spray" it all over the place inland, it dries and then is exposed to intense heat, lightning, etc.? That would be something pretty terrible, wouldn't it? There has been a lot of focus on what will happen to what's inside the ocean and the immediate shore, but does any of this have the potential to go farther inland with the help of storm activity? How would we clean up the flammable mess then? Or is this improbable?

I don't really know where to post this. But why not here.

Oh thats very likely. This could creep into all the waterways. Fortunately Grand Isle is fed w/water supply from the upper part of JP from the river -or those people would have to be evacuated.
A storm, the tide, wind - a hurricane...all will push this stuff inward. Its also going to kill all the grasses. Brown grass and oil? Sounds flammable to me.

Also unmentioned in corporate media is incredibly massive release of methane which is even a greater global warming accellerant than oil & byproducts.

State officials say they won't wait for approval to build sand barriers
By The Associated Press
May 23, 2010, 4:20PM
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the state is not waiting for federal approval to begin building sand barriers to protect the coastline from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Jindal's defiant comments Sunday came as oil pushed at least 12 miles into the heart of Louisiana's marshes. Two major pelican rookeries are now awash in crude.
Jindal made his remarks on a boat at the edge of one of the pelican nesting grounds in Barataria Bay. He and officials from several coastal parishes say the berms would close the door on the oil still pouring from a deepwater gusher about 50 miles off the coast.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is studying the environmental impacts from the emergency barrier proposal. The Corps didn't immediately respond to e-mails and telephone messages.

Army Corps of Engineers is incompetent, all the people there who knew how to do anything are long retired. (not that it was ever a perfect org). The whole thing is nothing but a pork distribution scheme, and they subcontract as much as they can, they have no skills. It's just another part of America's surrender to incompetence. Power is all that maters to the scum and people with real skills are kept damn far from that at all times and in all walks of life. Add to that a complete lack of care about inter-generational knowledge transfer and the general lack of experience.

I'm also worried about what happens when the storms hit... seems like there a chance for major plant kills as oil clogs up their stoma.

... on the methane front... still nothing but silence from GOSAT... look at their history of news on their news page, there's multiple stuff listed for every month, but nothing but total silence since April 30th.

GOSAT (Greenhouse gases Observing Satellite) is a JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) mission within the GCOM (Global Change Observation Mission) program of Japan. The GOSAT mission goals call for the study of the transport mechanisms of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4).
