Institutional Abuse Locations

Postby elfismiles » Tue Oct 21, 2014 4:45 pm

Just learned a little bit about the horror-show known as Letchworth Village:

Letchworth Village was a residential institution located in Rockland County, New York in the hamlet of Thiells built for the physically and mentally disabled of all ages from the newborn to the elderly. Opened in 1911, Letchworth Village at its peak consisted of over 130 buildings spread out over many acres of land.

On February 27, 1950, the first trial case of the polio vaccine in the United States was administered to an 8-year-old patient.[1] After the patient suffered no side effects, the vaccine was administered to 19 more of the institution's children.[2][3]

Reports of inadequate funding and improper care of the residents, including children, were present dating back to the 1920's. Accounts surfaced of residents being found unclothed, unbathed, and neglected. In addition to rampant abuse among the institution's residents, staff also suffered abuse at the hands of fellow co-workers which included incidents of rape.

In 1996 the institution was permanently closed down, and many of its abandoned structures have since fallen into serious disrepair.

In 2011, Letchworth was featured on the Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures cable-television series on Season 5, Episode 6 which originally aired on October 28, 2011.

Of course there are countless churches implicated all over the world... including here in Central Texas:

... somewhere around RI we've posted links to the book and documentary about several different "Boys Homes" where abuse was institutionalized. Can someone help me find those threads? I tried several different keywords but couldn't find them.

A few years ago, one of the UW libraries hosted a poignant exhibition of the belongings of institutional inmates from that era that had been 'discovered' in a storeroom at one of the old hospitals somewhere in the state. At the time I also read a few books on the subject that they featured with the exhibit. What impressed me was A) how abusive and exploitive these facilities often were towards their charges and B) how danged easy it was for someone to get trapped in one of these places simply for being somehow 'different' physically, mentally, socially, or being considered an 'inferior' ( generally woman or child, often non-anglo) without a sympathetic/acceptable 'guardian' (preferably white male). Oh, and also poor. That was one of the big common denominators.

Yep the marginalized become the disenfranchised become guinea pigs for TPTB.

It really blows my mind to consider just how widespread these particular "science" based abuse networks might have been farmed by the mil-int-medi-complex as test subjects. That Letchworth village was apparently the birth of the polio vaccine testing.

I really didn't consider how much this was going on until Nick Redfern's BODYSNATCHERS IN THE DESERT book on the Roswell Crash and seeing that documentary CROPSEY.
