Conspiracy meta-theory 'The Storm' pushes the 'alternative' envelope yet again

Special counsel Robert Mueller, in this alternative universe, is in fact preparing to indict hundreds of Democrats (including Clinton, Barack Obama, and financier George Soros) and Hollywood celebrities for their roles in a massive worldwide pedophilia ring, operated by “globalists” who are conspiring to destroy Trump — and that the president himself is himself masterminding this “countercoup.”

“What we have come up with is a possible coup,” explained conspiracy theorist David Zublick in a late-November video, “not against Donald Trump, but by Donald Trump, working with Robert Mueller to bring down the Clintons, the Democrat Party, and the entire U.S. government involved in pedophilia and child sex trafficking.”

In just a few short weeks, the theory has grown from a handful of posts on fringe Internet chat forums to become the overwhelming obsession of nearly every conspiracy theorist in the business, notably Alex Jones and his Infowars operation, as well as social-media figures such as Liz Crokin. In addition to being a constant focus of discussion on Infowars, dozens of YouTube videos and thousands of Twitter posts exploring various facets of the conspiracy, and presenting the usual dubious “evidence” to “prove” it, have shown up on the Internet.

The origins of “The Storm” lie in Trump’s cryptic remarks on October 6, saying that a gathering of military leaders represented “the calm before the storm.” When asked what he meant, Trump responded: “You’ll see.”

...This is the same pedophilia ring that was the focus of the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory that excited much of the far right in the months after the 2016 election. The conspiracists, including Jones, claimed that Clinton campaign adviser John Podesta’s emails, stolen by hackers during the campaign and published on Wikileaks, revealed that he, Clinton, and a host of others were part of a pedophilia ring operating out of a Washington, D.C., pizza parlor.

However, in the new expanded version of the theory, the pedophilia ring has gone global, drawing in alleged participants from all around the nation, and occurring in locations ranging from Hollywood to Europe. (One version of the pedophilia theory entertained by Jones claimed that the child victims were being secretly shipped to a colony on Mars.)

“QAnon” and the conspiracy theorists who piled on at 4chan, 8chan, and on Twitter claimed that contrary to the running story in mainstream media, this pedophilia ring is the real focus of Mueller’s investigation. The general conclusion, spread through the #qanon hashtag on social media, was that a wave of arrests – including Clinton, Obama, Podesta, Soros, Sen. John McCain, and a number of leading Hollywood figures and Democrats was about to happen.

As Martineau pointed out, however, there has been a credibility problem for “QAnon” early on, since he posted in early November a scenario in which hundreds of arrests, and massive social turmoil, were about to be unleashed within a matter of days. “Rest assured, the safety and well-being of every man, woman, and child of this country is being exhausted in full,” he wrote. “However, the atmosphere within the country will unfortunately be divided as so many have fallen for the corrupt and evil narrative that has long been broadcast. We will be initiating the Emergency Broadcast System (EMS) during this time in an effort to provide a direct message (avoiding the fake news) to all citizens.”

November came and went, of course, without any such event. But that hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm among QAnon’s horde of fans.

Everything is Everything:

Pundit and GOP candidate Tom Tancredo shared Seth Rich / Clinton murder conspiracy theories and racist images on Facebook

Image

Conservative pundit and former Rep. Tom Tancredo, who is now running for Colorado governor, has used his Facebook account to share racist images as well as conspiracy theories suggesting that former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton killed her purported political enemies.

Tancredo has a long history of racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric. He suggested that the United States bomb “the holy sites in Mecca and Medina” in Saudi Arabia; said that Miami, FL, had “become a Third World country” because of its Spanish-speaking population; and claimed that undocumented immigrants are “coming here to kill you and to kill me and our families.”

He regularly wrote columns for the similarly toxic Breitbart.com, but stopped following his late October announcement that he’s running for Colorado governor. (This is Tancredo’s third bid for governor.) Former Breitbart head Steve Bannon is a fan of Tancredo and reportedly talked with the former congressman in September about another run for office.

Tancredo was also a board member of the white nationalist group VDare until he recently stepped down to focus on his political career. He was scheduled to speak at VDare conferences in 2017 until the hosting venues cancelled them when they learned about the group’s white nationalist ideology. After Tancredo announced his candidacy, The Denver Post noted that he had begun “to explore a run after being outraged that Republicans didn’t speak out against the cancellation” of the VDARE conference.

Tancredo has repeatedly defended VDare. He recently claimed, “It is not a white supremacist group. Go on their website, they talk about who they are. They believe in stopping illegal immigration, they believe in preserving the culture, it's got nothing to do with race."

Headlines on VDare include: “America Does Not Need ANY Immigrants From Africa,” “Indians Aren`t That Intelligent (On Average),” “Diversity Is Strength! It’s Also…Hispanic Immigrants Taking Over FBI’s Ten Most Wanted,” “'Time To Rethink Martin Luther King Day'–The 2017 Edition,” “Barack Obama, Trayvon Martin and the Four Dirty Little Secrets of Black America,” “Do We Need More Hispanics?” and “Color Of Crime, Sound Of (Big Media) Silence.”

Tancredo’s toxic rhetoric has extended to his social media. During his time as a pundit, he shared conspiratorial and racist viral images on his Facebook page. He shared images suggesting that Hillary Clinton killed former Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich, United Nations official John Ashe, anti-Semitic writer Victor Thorn, and process server Shawn Lucas.

Stormy Daniels Once Claimed She Spanked Donald Trump With a Forbes Magazine
At his request.

Mother Jones has learned that Daniels years earlier talked about having had a sexual relationship with Trump—and in lurid detail. According to 2009 emails between political operatives who were at the time advising Daniels on a possible political campaign, the adult film actor and director claimed that her affair with Trump included an unusual act: spanking him with a copy of Forbes magazine.

Well reading that was entertaining in a gross way, if a waste of time.

So why is QAnon revealing all this stuff to the public? Effectively it would be warning the bad guys to protect themselves and may ruin Trump and Mueller's brilliant collaboration. No further steps in the logic are required to understanding that this is exactly what QAnon must trying to do. He's one of THEM! So when the big sweep doesn't happen in February, it will be because QAnon was for real and revealed the plot in advance. Or else because of that nuclear war thing.

More seriously, won't surprise if-when "QAnon" reveals itself as a prankster of the Snopes/Skeptic school.

What's ironic to me is that all the incredibly stupid stuff which gets a free pass under current regimes of conspiracy culture is bound to be used to invalidate the claims of those of us who hope to be more thoughtful and even rigorous in our intellectual work.

Oh yeah, Trump's been happy-dancing his way through 2018 so far, that's for sure!

I was pleased to see that my own decision to basically ignore the obviously bogus, manufactured #ReleaseTheMemo hysteria and take a wait-and-see posture was rewarded by said mania's swift and ignominious disintegration into a urine-scented cloud of concentrated FAIL. As if we don't already know where Devin Nunes stands on the issue of Trump's treachery and criminality.

But Jerky, surely a memo written by partisan hack Devin Nunes will prove everything!

And the efforts to create a hashtag campaign rather than attempting the appropriate bureaucratic procedures to actual release the info upon which the memo is based certainly speak to the fastidious work Republicans are undertaking to protect truth, justice and the American way.

Justice Department to probe missing texts between FBI agents

The Department of Justice said it will review why text messages between Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were not preserved by the FBI’s system, and if they can be retrieved.

In a letter to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, sent Friday but released Monday, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd gave notice the Justice Department was turning over the previously requested July 2015 to July 2017 texts between the two FBI agents. The latest batch provided is 384 pages of text messages, which will be added to the department release of 375 individual messages in December 2017.

However, like with the letter sent by Boyd to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Friday, the Justice Department told the House Intelligence Committee the “FBI’s system failed to retain text messages for approximately five months between December 14, 2016 to May 17, 2017.”

According to Boyd, there were “misconfiguration issues” on “many” FBI-issued Samsung 5 phones that “conflicted with the FBI’s collection capabilities.”

“The result was that data that should have been automatically collected and retained for long-term storage and retrieval was not collected,” he said.

Strzok and Page were both part of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server, and then also assigned to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Trump-Russia investigation. It has been revealed they exchanged pro-Clinton, anti-Trump messages while also maintaining an extramarital affair during their time on both probes.

Page, a lawyer, left Mueller's team in July 2017 for an unrelated reason, but Strzok, a top counterintelligence official, was removed last summer after the discovery of the text messages.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday a review is “already underway to ascertain what occurred and to determine if these records can be recovered in any other way.”

According to Sessions, “if any wrongdoing were to be found to have caused this gap, appropriate legal disciplinary action measures will be taken.”

“We will leave no stone unturned to confirm with certainty why these text messages are not now available to be produced and will use every technology available to determine whether the missing messages are recoverable from another source. If we are successful, we will update the congressional committees immediately,” he added.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va.; House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C.; and Nunes both called the latest batch of text messages "troubling," specifically regarding "when certain key decisions were made by the Department of Justice and the FBI, by whom these decisions were made, and the evident bias exhibited by those in charge of the investigation."

The three lawmakers said that the missing texts are "equally concerning" and cause them to "further question the credibility and objectivity of certain officials at the FBI.”
