PBS NOVA: Engineering Ground Zero
Image

Program Description
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, NOVA presents an epic story of engineering, innovation, and the perseverance of the human spirit. With extraordinary access granted by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, “Engineering Ground Zero” follows the five-year construction of One World Trade Center (1 WTC) and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

NOVA captures the behind-the-scenes struggle of architects and engineers to make the buildings safe and highly secure under the pressures of a tight schedule, the demands of practical office space and efficient “green” architecture, and the public’s expectations of a fitting site for national remembrance. The program features interviews with 1 WTC architect David Childs; Chris Ward, the Port Authority’s executive director; Mayor Michael Bloomberg, chairman of the 9/11 Memorial Foundation; and Michael Arad, the man behind the breakthrough concept for the 9/11 Memorial.

theglobeandmail.com:

Each year since, more students among the current crop of 15-year-olds tell him [...] that they've never experienced the horror of watching the twin towers collapse.

More than 60 million children in America are 14 and younger, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So how do teachers handle the daunting task of trying to explain the significance of 9/11 to students who don't remember when anyone could walk right up to the gate at the airport
[...]
Students across the country will gather for assemblies, hold moments of silence and spend history and social studies classes focusing on Sept. 11 this year. They'll hear stories from teachers and talk to survivors or family members of victims.
[...]
They'll read front-page headlines screaming “UNTHINKABLE” or “ACT OF WAR” in giant letters.
[...]
The lessons recommend some kind of action, such as creating art about tolerance or service projects to honour or remember victims.
[...]
In 2009, New York City schools piloted what was believed to be the first comprehensive educational plan focusing on the attacks. Created by the New Jersey-based Sept. 11 Education Trust, the curriculum has also been tested in schools in California, Alabama, Indiana, Illinois and Kansas. It uses videos and interviews about the attacks, as well as interactive exercises like having students map global terrorist activity with Google Earth software.

Thursday September 8, 2011 scan of USA Today above the fold headline:

How 9/11 changed us: Making sure the terrorists don't win
By Rick Hampson, USA TODAY

In Las Vegas, a former governor said it. In Columbia, S.C., a criminologist said it. Outside Washington, D.C., a retired general said it. A social studies teacher in Marietta, Ga., said it, as did the mayor of Shelby, Mont., and an editorial writer in Jackson, Miss.

If we hide in the basement; if we cancel the ballgame; if we don't go to school; if we trade freedom for security; if we strike a scapegoat or stoop to vengeance or turn on each other; if we change in any of a thousand ways — then, they all said on Sept. 11, 2001, "the terrorists have won."

The phrase became a national cri de coeur. After the terror attacks, Americans assumed al-Qaeda could never defeat them militarily and had to win by panicking, provoking or intimidating them into abandoning their democratic, capitalistic, pluralistic ways.

<<<snip>>>

In warnings, patriotism and humor, the many faces of “… or the terrorists have won":

Sept. 12, 2001

"If we stop these things, then (the terrorists) have won." — Debbie Ryndak of the Wheaton, Ill., Chamber of Commerce, explaining to the Chicago Daily Herald why the annual Autumn Fest would be held as scheduled, despite phone calls from people "irate that we're not canceling" in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

Oct. 30, 2001

The Stratford, Conn., school board votes to let the high school marching band, one of 12 such groups chosen to play at the Tournament of Roses parade, go to Pasadena for the New Year's Day event. The vote comes despite post-9/11 cross-country travel jitters. Christopher Ready, a junior who plays the saxophone, later tells The New York Times: "I understand why some parents are worried, but we can't let the terrorists win."

Nov. 4, 2001

Ellen DeGeneres, hosting an Emmy Awards show twice postponed after 9/11, jokes: "We're told to go on living our lives as usual, because to do otherwise is to let the terrorists win, and really, what would upset the Taliban more than a gay woman wearing a suit in front of a room full of Jews?"

Nov. 18, 2001

The New York Post reports that Martha Stewart is upset that so few employees of her company have agreed to host smaller holiday parties in their homes in lieu of the company's usual big bash. Stewart offered $300 per host to cover costs, but apparently had few takers, perhaps because hosts don't get to pick their guests. She sent an e-mail: "This is a very, very special year … for every company and person affected by the events of Sept. 11. To me, the terrorists have certainly succeeded if so few of you participate in a company-wide effort to get together."

April 14, 2002

"When we treat everybody like terrorists, the terrorists have won. We've got to quit hiding behind those walls as though we were fairy princesses." — Colorado state Sen. Ken Chlouber, the Republican sponsor of a bill to roll back post-9/11 security measures at the state Capitol. It would reopen all entrances to the public, eliminate metal detectors and return two police cars permanently parked at the bottom of the steps to "other law enforcement purposes."

Sept. 11, 2002

After the West Virginia Public Service Commission restricts public access to maps and documents showing locations of power lines, natural gas pipelines and water supplies, West Virginia University journalism professor Terry Wimmer tells TheCharleston Gazette that "we will have bureaucrats deciding what is public records. … That just proves the terrorists won."

Feb. 13, 2003

With fears of another terrorist attack running high, some Americans stock up on bottled water or seal their windows with plastic and duct tape. But not all. "If I go out and start buying duct tape," says Moshe Pekkar of the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh, "it means the terrorists have succeeded."

Sept. 11, 2003

On the second anniversary of 9/11, priest Leo Connolly tells parishioners at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Zanesville, Ohio, to try to love their enemies: "Maybe — if we're consistent and try long enough and hard enough — even our most ardent enemies will be moved by Christian love. … If we don't give people enough love, then the terrorists have won."

Aug. 2, 2004

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner says that "if we do not reopen the Statue of Liberty's crown, the terrorists have won." The New York Democrat blasts a National Park Service decision to admit the public only as far as the pedestal. "Merely reopening her feet is no triumph," he says. "Osama bin Laden has kept the Statue of Liberty closed for far too long." The Park Service won't allow visitors up in the statue because of the difficulty of evacuating them in an emergency.

Aug. 31, 2005

"The terrorists have won when a Christian preacher issues his own fatwa." — Columnist Bill Press, referring to TV evangelist Pat Robertson's suggestion that if, as he has claimed, President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela is targeted by the U.S. for assassination, "we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war."

Nov. 29, 2005

No. 5 on David Letterman's "Top 10 Questions Paris Hilton Asked Herself Before Buying a Monkey": "If I don't buy this monkey, does that mean the terrorists have won?"

Nov. 27, 2005

"The (U.S. Supreme Court) needs to make clear that, even in wartime, citizens retain their constitutional rights and cannot be imprisoned without due process. A failure to establish that in this case would leave every one of us open to arbitrary arrest and imprisonment without being formally charged. That would reduce the Constitution to just another piece of paper, which would mean that the terrorists had won." —ThePatriot-News of Harrisburg, Pa., referring to the case of Jose Padilla, an American terror suspect held for three years in a Navy jail without being charged.

Aug. 17, 2007

"(El Pescador) is the best Mexican restaurant to hit Madison — well, maybe ever. … Seldom do I get this enthused, but — let's put it this way — if people aren't soon lined up around the block to enjoy this food, then the terrorists have won." — Jerry Minnich, restaurant reviewer for Isthmus, a weekly in Madison, Wis.

April 11, 2008

After the restaurant chain Hooters announces plans to open restaurants in England, the website Jezebel calls it a "sign of the Apocalypse … The terrorists have won."

June 09, 2009

A Des Moines civil liberties advocate criticizes the City Council for approving acceptance of $286,000 in homeland security grants without asking more questions. Marty Ryan of the ACLU of Iowa says city officials should have asked for more specifics about how the money will be used to secure undisclosed potential terrorist targets. Police say details could undermine security, and council members say they don't need them. "In an ideal world, everybody would know what's going on," says councilman Tom Vlassis, "but terrorism is a different world." Ryan's reply: "The terrorists have won."

Sept. 15, 2009

"On Amtrak to Rhode Island. They added hummus to dining-car menu. Did the terrorists win?" — From Twitter profile of stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia.

Nov. 2, 2009

On his radio show, Don Imus says of his environmentalist wife, Deirdre: "When we buy plastic CD covers, according to my wife, 'the terrorists win.'"

Aug. 4, 2010

Conservative radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham criticizes a proposal for a mosque and Islamic community center near Ground Zero: "The terrorists have won with the way this has gone down."

Sept. 23, 2010

"Muslim Americans (in Lower Manhattan on 9/11) were victims, just as all Americans were victims. Many people do not associate those Muslims with terrorism, and feel that if the (Ground Zero mosque) is stopped, the terrorists have won another victory." — Letter to the PoughkeepsieJournal by Richard Douglass of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.

Dec. 2, 2010

Soccer fans at Red Bulls stadium in Harrison, N.J., are disappointed to learn the tiny Middle Eastern nation of Qatar has been selected over the U.S. to host the 2022 World Cup. A man holds up a hastily prepared sign: "The Terrorists Have Won."

March 7, 2011

"We'e terrorizing innocent travelers to save us from terrorism. We've lost the battle if we continue to do that. The terrorists have won." — Texas state Republican Rep. David Simpson, co-sponsor of legislation to ban the TSA from using full-body scanners or invasive pat-down searches at Texas airports. He tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that security officers at a Michigan airport "put their hands between my wife's breasts."

March 17, 2011

"Certainly the government should back the Fourth of July. For the community to say it's not worth it, I find that appalling. (If there are no fireworks), the terrorists have won." — Pewaukee, Wis., village trustee John Laimon in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about insufficient funding for a fireworks display.

April 17, 2011

"Personally, I never got over Uncrustables — those frozen, pre-made, peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches. I saw someone buy a box the other day and thought, 'The terrorists have won.'" — Steve Penhollow, columnist for The (Fort Wayne, Ind.) Journal Gazette.

May 5, 2011

"It saddens me to see that the terrorists have won. … The fists into the air and the cries of victory as if our team had just won a Super Bowl disgust me. The only things missing were gunshots up into the sky at the news of the death of Osama bin Laden." — Donna Sprague, Plainville, R.I., letter to The Providence Journal.

Cirque du Nineleven is in full force today, folks.

As I've mentioned before, I work right next to the WTC.

Normally, there are four entrances to my building, and they are all "guarded," on the inside, by schlumpy looking, half asleep dudes.

Today, on the other hand, I approached the entrance I normally use and I was greeted, on the outside, by an impeccably dressed gentleman wearing an earpiece, who directed me to the lone operational entrance on the side of the building furthest away from the place I refuse to refer to as ground zero.

Fun times.

I was just talking to my gal about the "credible threats" for this w/e, and it occurred to me that the shutting down of the subway system during the Irene stormaganza may have provided an opportunity for the black hats to set up a bit of a 7/7 reprise.

Keep your shit wired tight, and stay frosty, people.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... Road_Trip/

Apparently, there are people who, "unbelievably" don't believe the American government, whereas the host of the programme firmly believes the American government account is true and that Osama bin Laden ordered the attacks, even though the official position is that he didn't.

This September marks the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, one of the biggest terrorist atrocities of the 21st Century. Nineteen hijackers, all members of Al Qaeda, crashed four planes on American soil, leading to the deaths of 2,973 innocent people.

This horrific event has generated a multitude of conspiracy theories that contradict the official findings of the US government's investigation into the events of that day.

Andrew Maxwell, a comedian, believes in the findings of the official investigation, which claim the responsibility for the attack lies with Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. He thinks the conspiracies theories are unsubstantiated nonsense. So in this film he offers to take five young Brits, who believe some of these conspiracy theories, on a road-trip from New York to Washington. They visit Ground Zero where two planes hit the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, home of vast American defence HQ and Shanksville in Pennsylvania where United 93 crashed.

Each of them believes different elements of the conspiracy theories. Charlotte, a North London nanny who witnessed the attacks, thinks the American government is responsible. She can't believe the hijackers, barely out of flying school, could have steered jetliners into the Twin Towers with such deadly accuracy. Rodney a health worker who studied biochemistry suspects the collapse of the towers was not caused by the planes that went in to them and he wants to get to the bottom of the science. Student Emily, an active member of the 9/11 Truth Movement, thinks the US government was forewarned of the attacks and yet ignored the intelligence allowing it to happen. Shazin, a qualified surveyor, wants to find out how the passengers on United 93 could have made phone calls to loved ones from a plane. And Charlie, an ex-banker thinks 9/11 was an excuse for the US Government to go to war with Iraq. Andrew Maxwell thinks all five of them are wrong and wants to change their minds by confronting them with the facts. So as the bus criss-crosses the east coast of America he tries to convert them to his point of view. He wants to prove to them that 9/11 was no conspiracy and that sometimes the truth, whilst not easy to accept, is staring you right in the face. In order to do so, he takes them to meet experts, the chief air traffic controller on the day, demolition specialists, voice morphing engineers and he gets them to conduct scientific experiments and even fly an aeroplane.

Finally they meet a mother who tragically lost her son, to listen to her account of what it was like to live through this monumental tragedy. Andrew believes it is easy to judge world events from the safe distance of a computer screen in your bedroom but not easy when you are brought face to face with the real human stories behind them Andrew Maxwell fights an exhausting battle for the truth and in his mission to convert his fellow travellers there are rows, falling-outs and tears. But there are also moments of tenderness, empathy and warmth.

Ok, I actually watched that. A lot of sideswipes, like pretending to be surprised that a scientist would be a conspiracy theorist, because he though such a person would "be rational".

Someone who didn't think the hijackers could have flown the planes, because they were amateurs. Obviously no mention of their being well-trained pilots, as Atta certainly was.

A TA man who believed in CD but was converted from what were allegedly strongly and long-held beliefs by a particularly poor two-minute explanation. A brief examination of thermite, which leads to Mr Scientist deciding that the Establishment actually had nothing to gain from a conspiracy and therefore it wasn't a conspiracy after all. No mention of the company that was doing maintenance that would allow them access to place charges, no mention whatsoever of WTC7.

Then they all become no-planers, because they're all idiots. I'm guessing, I'm still watching this, that the idea that Rumsfeld planted the "missile" idea as disinformation won't be mentioned. Or the two trillion declared missing the day before, and so on. No, they just go and get the Pentagon's chief engineer, who allegedly saw it all happen. Mr Territorial Army, once again, starts off as a "believer" and is quickly converted to the other side. A pattern emerges.

I was right about what they wouldn't mention, they then move onto the issue of United 93. Mr TA is putting the case for conspiracy. Possibly the pattern will continue. Rumsfeld changing the interception procedures for flights going off course to allow this to happen, and the exercises taking place, probably won't be mentioned. Obviously they don't present the any evidence that any of the phone calls took place, or look at whether it was even possible for those calls to be made, or the dubious nature of a lot of those calls and the lack of proof that they ever took place, their outrageously political nature, and so on.

The BBC ought to be ashamed.

9/11 victim fund chief set to hand out $2.8 billion

NEW YORK (Reuters) - On an evening in late July, Sheila Birnbaum stood before a room full of firefighters and police officers in New York City's borough of Queens and announced, "I'm going to be affecting your life."
It was less a boast than a statement of fact. Nearly 10 years after the September 11 attacks, Birnbaum was tapped by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to run the second 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

A first compensation fund handed out more than $7 billion to families of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.

The new fund will distribute $2.8 billion provided by the U.S. Congress to compensate police, fire and emergency workers, local residents and others who suffered illnesses related to exposure to the 9/11 disaster sites following the attacks or in debris removal.

Birnbaum, a 71-year-old partner at a high-powered corporate law firm and a lifelong New Yorker, got an earful at the Queens event, one of several town-hall style meetings she scheduled after being named in May to head the fund.
Cancer does not appear on the list of diseases for which a person can claim compensation from the fund.

"I just think this was an injustice," John Marshall, a 52-year-old retired police officer who was at the Ground Zero disaster site in New York and who now uses a breathing tube since developing throat cancer, told Birnbaum. "Stop looking at us through a microscope and look at us as people."

A toxic cloud of dust was unleashed by the collapse of the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York after they were struck by hijacked airliners, and debris removal workers later shifted through the Ground Zero wreckage. The new fund will provide money for people who later developed illnesses, such as lung disease and certain musculoskeletal disorders.

The other 9/11 disaster sites are the Pentagon outside Washington and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

'THEY HAVE FELT ABANDONED'

In an interview at her office at the firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Birnbaum said emotions surrounding September 11 are as raw today as they were a decade ago for many police, firefighters, emergency workers and local residents.

"And in fact, sometimes even more so because they have felt abandoned along the way," she said.

Birnbaum, known her pragmatic approach, said she does not take the anger personally. "I understand that it's directed to 'government,' and I'm the representative standing up there," she said. "If there was someone else standing up there, the anger would be directed to them."

Birnbaum said she will spend "as much time as it takes" to oversee the fund -- up to seven years, by her estimate.

Kenneth Feinberg, who administered the first victim compensation fund, said Birnbaum's experience -- she served as a mediator in September 11-related litigation -- made her a "natural choice" to oversee the new fund. "I can't think of anybody more qualified to do it," he said in an interview.

Birnbaum faces obstacles that Feinberg did not.

She is working with less money, and with potentially more applicants seeking a piece of it. Applications to the fund begin on October 3. Birnbaum said she does not know how many people will file claims.

Birnbaum will be making payments not for easily verifiable deaths, but for illnesses whose link to Ground Zero exposure may be tenuous. In July, a scientific advisory panel failed to find sufficient evidence tying specific cancer cases directly to the dust and chemicals at the disaster sites.

Birnbaum said working as a mediator to settle dozens of wrongful-death suits filed after the attacks taught her a lot.

"I met with many of the families, often more than once. I learned about the emotional pull that 9/11 has on people that were lost or injured in the World Trade Center, in the Pentagon, in Shanksville. And I think those experiences have made me more understanding of what people are going through," she said.

"I think people need to be a little patient with regard to the issues of cancer until we get some more information. This program is open for five years. And I know people have been waiting for a long time," Birnbaum said.
"But we need to have the evidence that gives us the ability to compensate for certain injuries that are now not part of the compensation because if we don't do it right, then Congress is going to be critical of what we did."
Feinberg said that to be effective Birnbaum will need to be many things to many people. He said, "She has to be able to be Mother Superior, as well as a lawyer, as well as an accountant, as well as politician, as well as a psychiatrist."

For some reason this is particularly disgusting. Not that they're doing it, but the timing of it. It feels like it's purely a PR stunt.

A bit off topic but interesting in a ghoulish sort of way. The story of this chalk drawing is at the link below.

Does anyone have any details on the old reports of mass shipments of gold being loaded onto trucks and shipped out from the WTC on 9/10/01, or was that disinformation? I feel like that is an element to the 9/11 story that I have not heard about in many years.

I dunno about gold, but the scrap trucks were ready to roll, shortly after:

As I'm typing all this up, I just heard all this rumbling outside, so I ran up to the roof and saw a parade of rescue vehicles - probably around 50 trucks or so, fire engines, dump trucks, cranes, pickups, etc - heading towards 6th Ave. The sidewalks below were full of people clapping and cheering.
